NL Envirothon Current Issue
Sustainable Large Scale Land base Management
Learning Objectives
1.) Define Protected Lands and crown lands. What percentage of the province of NL is in Protected state? Identify and
differentiate between protected area types. Understanding of the rights to usage of these areas.
2.) Define Newfoundland ecological sites; understand these protected ecological processes and definitions.
3.) Familiar with the principles behind Gros Morne National Park’s Management plan to maintain a Large scale, non-
fragmented and ecologically sound landscape.
4.) An understanding of stakeholders as well as the stakeholder approach to management within different land
communities (wetland, riparian, Protected and forested areas). A sense of Best Management Practices (BMP’s) used
by land managers.
5.) An understanding of our large mammals and interactions within their natural ecosystems. Familiarity with
Newfoundland and Labrador’s Species at Risk.
6.) Definition of the historical land use of Newfoundland. Understanding of our major industries in the province
(Forestry, fishing, oil/gas, energy and tourism).
Key Topics
1) Basic Protected and Crown land knowledge and familiar with Newfoundland’s Species at Risk.
2) Forest ecology processes – define ecological sites and processes (soil – plant relationships, energy flow, nutrient cycle, water cycle and plant succession)
3) Basic knowledge of migration patterns, forage preferences and habitat requirements of Species at Risk animals.
