Park La Brea Jacarandas

The Most Beautiful Blue in the Entire World

By Carol Robins

Their beauty is usually overpowering. Jacaranda Trees are generally bare until May or early June but we may be surprised this year with an April blooming. Experts predict that the sudden early heat wave and drought may play a role in this.

The bluish-purple flowers on these luscious trees, hang downward, are trumpet shaped and usually have five petals. Both male and female parts are in each petal. In 1933, the Los Angeles City Forester declared the jacaranda the most exotic tree in Los Angeles. In 1972 Glendale made the jacaranda its official tree.

While these trees can be seen in various locations throughout Park La Brea, Curson Square hosts a breathtaking collection that look like a work of art when in bloom.

Some people have a love/hate relationship with these trees, especially those that seem to leave a sticky sap on their parked cars. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not the nectar or sap that makes your car sticky. It is caused by aphids, insects that flock to the flowers and secrete a sugary substance after feeding.

Whether you love them or hate them, when jacarandas bloom, it’s time to get your camera out.

Maintenance Tip of the Month DISHWASHER USE

“Please help us to help you”

Your dishwasher needs to be used with tender loving care. We all want our dishes to be clean. Here are some tips: Use a good name brand liquid or gel soap instead of powered soap. Liquid soap breaks down more easily than powdered soap and does not cake up. Before placing your dishes into the dishwasher pre-scrap the food from your dishes into the trash can and then pre-rinse your dishes in the sink with the garbage disposal utilizing hot water. Remember, your dishwasher is not a garbage disposal! Start your dishwasher. Don't overload the dishwasher. Be sure to use the correct cycle just like a washing machine. Every now and then put one cup of vinegar into the empty dishwasher and run a complete cycle to keep it smelling fresh and to clean out old food particles. Wipe down your door gaskets on a regular basis. There is a strainer at the bottom of the unit that catches small food particles. Wipe it out from time to time. All this will help ensure a better wash.
