President’s Message Did you know that for the first 5 years you are 'newbies' to our sport and/or breed? You can tell 'newbies' because after about a year, they know everything!

They love to share this wealth of 'knowledge' with all who will listen and even those who won't. The newbie complains that the judges only put up a dog because of the handler. The newbie won't enter under Judge A because he wouldn't know a 200 scoring performance if he saw one.

They become hardened and callous, discouraged and defeated. Then they pass the 5 year mark and oh my good they get a brain! They become enlightened and actually start to learn about their breed or sport. Anyone who gets past the 5 year mark in the dog world is usually in it for life.

We finally get beyond the 'know-everything-stage' and actually become very nice people. We start to give back to our sport. We become the perpetual student always learning something new. We make new friends even when they are competitors. We share our experiences with these new friends and they share theirs with us.

It's really amazing that it takes us 5 years to get there.

Next time you run into a 'newbie' try not to roll your eyes and write them off.

Editor’s Message

Late last night, as has happened every few nights for the past couple of weeks (and

every year around this time), I was trying to calm my dog enough to do her business

outside while the inevitable fireworks were going off. A neighbour’s dog came cowering up

to me, then bolted down the street, with the owner coming out shortly after wondering

where her dog had gone. There is a large playing field behind our house, and I assumed

that this is where the fireworks were being set off.

After waiting for a while longer to see if it was finally all over, off they went again. Not

being one to let stupid people torture my dog (or any others), I called the police and

asked them to please take a cruise by the park and see if they could put a stop to it, at

least for the rest of the night. They very kindly called me back about an hour later and

told me that they had found a house party going on in the area, with at least one idiot

shooting off fireworks. The party was shut down and the parties involved were ticketed. I

was told to call them again if I heard any more.

Please, remember that even if we can’t hear the fireworks, our dogs can and many are

terrified when it happens. More dogs go missing at this time of year than any other. If

you do hear fireworks, please phone the police. Even if your dog is okay with the noise,

many are not and you could just save them from harm. And maybe, if people realize that

they could get ticketed and fined (possibly $200—possession; $200—discharging), they

might think twice before setting them off.

Happy Halloween, everyone! Pop corn, not fireworks!!! Thank you, from Millie and

The proposed vote regarding banning ear cropping and tail docking was postponed at the BCVMA AGM this month as the new Veterinarians Act has replaced the BCVMA with the CVBC (College of Veterinarians of BC) and with that, there is a change in bylaws. No longer can matters be voted on at a meeting, instead there will be a need for ballots so each member can register a vote. This means that items that are important for a small group will not get discussed or voted on without the entire membership having a say. That said, the matter was discussed, and the results of an informal poll were presented that had 96 % of veterinarians who responded to the survey being in favour of banning ear cropping and tail docking, while 4 % did not want it becoming a banned procedure for veterinarians to do. Because of the change from the BCVMA to the CVBC, there are many items that need to be dealt with before the tail dock and ear crop issue is dealt with, but the majority of veterinarians in attendance at the meeting, see it as an issue that needs to be addressed. The primary concern for the veterinarian, if veterinarians are banned from doing the procedure, is the health and safety of the dog if lay people without skills and experience begin doing the procedure. The BCSPCA would be working to make it a criminal offence if anyone did the procedure, which they feel can only come about if veterinarians are banned from doing it. Carole Ann

"forgotten" to return any to the NKC library.

Magazines especially, seem to get checked out and not returned. It would be

appreciated if you include the month/issue, with sign out. This will enable

me to keep track of who has what issue(s).

I will be cataloguing the books on the library shelf, this way we will know

what material is there to borrow.

It would be appreciated if you only borrow material for one month. This will

allow all NKC members to enjoy the books and magazines.

I would also like to include a Thank You to Pat Townsend, for her

time spent reorganizing our library.

The walk was really nice, the

weather was perfect and everyone

stopped for ice cream on the way

back. We caused quite a stir and

managed to talk to several people

about being a responsible dog

owner.

The NKC Juniors celebrated Halloween a bit early with a games night. Four teams took part in Musical hoops, a dress-up relay and the favourite of the night, bobbing for hotdogs and apples. There were some interesting techniques including one dog that lapped up all the water then gobbled down his hotdog!

The children each took home a ghostly goodie bag filled with chocolate treats and the dogs were given a bag of yummy cheese rings and organic hearts.

Next month we will finish with a show handling lesson from Del and company.
