IPU nitrogenstart packagesIPU nitrogen starting modules are designedfor starting diesel engines in conjunctionwith a pneumatic starter motor. As nitrogenis an inert gas, it provides the ideal solutionfor emergency back up to the primarystarting system on applications such as firepumps or generators in offshore andhazardous areas where secondary starting isessential.

IPU nitrogen starting systems utilise standard high pressurerental nitrogen cylinders to store the energy used forstarting. The benefit of using nitrogen cylinders is that whenempty they can be exchanged for full cylinders.

As these cylinders can store nitrogen at up to 350 bar,a large cranking duration can be achieved from eachnitrogen cylinder which can then simply be replaced.IPU manufacture the starting system to accept the requirednumber of standard rental nitrogen cylinders (not suppliedby IPU Starting) needed to provide the specified crankingperiod.

Nitrogen starting systems use the stored pressure in thenitrogen cylinders storing at up to 350 bar to turn apneumatic starter motor, which typically operates at 7 barusing a high-pressure full flow pressure reduction valve.

ApplicationsNitrogen starting packages are used extensively offshorewhere a simple but effect method of starting a diesel engineis required. Main applications are for fire pumps on offshoreplatforms, which require multiple methods of enginecranking.

The nitrogen starting modules are fully assembledand ready to use, with all componentsmounted within a freestanding skid, typicallycomprising of:

Nitrogen bottles (provided by the end user)

250 bar to 7 bar full flow pressure reduction valve

High pressure filter

Manifold block incorporating:• Pressure safety valve to protect the low pressure itemsin case of reduction valve leakage or failure

• High and low pressure gauges and stainless steelisolators

• Isolation valves for each nitrogen cylinder

• Low pressure switch and stainless steel isolator (M20conduit entry) set to 70 bar approximately

Hoses with nitrogen cylinder adaptors to connectto each cylinder.

Technical information

All items are mounted into a fully welded steel framewith two off lifting points. All fittings are stainlesssteel Swagelok twin ferrule type with stainless steeltubing, and paint finish is to IPU standard offshorepaint specification.
