Location on map: Altitude:900 meters Coordinates: 31.53’35” N-76.17’50” E N.I.T HAMIRPUR Geology Soil: Texture is loamy sand having stony surface. pH is neutral ( approx. 7). Water holding capacity is low. Types of stones: Conglomerate, sandstone, clay stone, siltstone. Climatic conditions: Average wind velocity Max. annual rainfall: 2000mm, Average annual rainfall: 1600mm, Moderate climate is found here, Summers are hot and winters are considerably cold. Vegetation: The campus has chir pine forest. Bamboo, bamboo malabarious, cedrela (simel), serrate( tuni), mangoes etc. are also found. Most of the vegetation is deciduous in nature. Site planning: The major factors governing the planning are : Topography Climatic conditions, Orientation Traffic movement, Available usable spaces, Sources of water supply, Natural drains and paths. Hamirpur lies in hot climatic region, so it has been designed in a way to reduce the effect of heat and direct sunlight. Fins have been provided in building blocks to counter this effect of heat. Layout planning is complicated due to constraints of hilly region for the construction of buildings and roads beyond certain degrees of slope. Building layout on contours: Building blocks are placed along the contours to increase the stability of these structures and to cut down the cost on the site development. Keeping the visual aspect in mind, buildings have maximum 5 storeys which helps in maintaining human scale, proportions and integration. ENTRANCE: NH 70 leads to main entrance of college campus. There are two gates on for entrance and other for exit. PLAYGROUND: It has basketball court, tennis court O.A.T: Open air theatre has stepped sitting .Its used for cultural activities PARVATI GIRLS HOSTEL: Its planned by keeping the climate Of place in mind. Courtyard planning Is adopted. Every room has individual balcony. GUEST HOUSE: Its built on hill by the side of road leading to playground. WORKSHOP LIBRARY Zoning: Academic complex, residential area, hostels, workshops, shops, leisure areas, indoor and outdoor playing areas.. The NIT Hamirpur campus constitutes of: Administrative block, Architecture Dept., Computer centre, CSE dept., Civil dept., EEE dept., Mechanical dept., Lecture hall, Auditorium, Library, Dispensary , Indian Coffee House, 4h, verka, juice bar, Nescafe, shops, Boys and girls hostels, faculty residences, playgrounds. Circulation in campus: The vehicular road leading from the highway takes us to the main administrative block. Further this vehicular road connects almost all the other building blocks also. Landscaping: Heavy tree plantation has been done on both sides of roads. Open area also has elements like rocks etc. which naturally existed on the site. Small patches of green areas have been provided in front of every building block, with plantations in them. These are accompanied by different walkways. Flower beds have been provided in front of administrative block and along the roads. Along with this, many open spaces have also been provided in the campus. Street lighting and sign boards have artistic and appealing appearance. Material used in construction: Most of the buildings are in stone masonry. Newly built buildings are in concrete blocks. Sloping roofs have been made with GI sheets and are painted green, to give a feel of integration between different blocks. Flooring has been done with tiles, somewhere of granite tiles and somewhere of ceramic tiles. Services: Fire extinguishers are the only means provided against fire calamities. Solar water heaters have been installed on roof tops. Elevator has been provided in administrative block. Air conditioning Water supply Merits: The campus is free from pollution. The campus is lush green, having variety of trees and other plants. Roads have been well maintained. The administration and academic core are in close relationship and almost at the center of the whole campus. Locally available materials have been utilized wherever possible to reduce construction cost. Demerits: The walking distance on the site is large. According to standards, the walking distance between the dwelling place and the academic area must not exceed 7 minutes. Landscaping is not well maintained throughout the campus. No proper parking has been provided till date. Different blocks are not well connected. Building blocks are being constructed in an improper manner. Services like fire fighting are not up-to-date. ADMINSTRATIVE BLOCK Situated at almost the centre of the campus, this building block serves as main operating machine for the institute. It has all the offices like directors office and accounts and documentation sections also. It has well maintained landscaping in front of it. AUDITORIUM A fully facilitated auditorium is also there in the campus. DEPARTMENTS NITH has different building blocks for branches like civil, mechanical, eee, ece, cse, architecture and applied sciences.
