CONFESSION OF SINS

M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God

our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us

forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have

disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and

failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in

eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus

Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be

the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his

authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son (+)

and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER AND PRAISE

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Our songs of adoration.

Of our God, the Lord of glory.

2 Alleluia! Let praises ring! Unto the Lamb of God we sing,

In whom we are elected.

He bought the Church with his own blood; He cleansed her in that blessed flood

And as his bride selected.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: Let us pray.

Grant us, Lord, the spirit to think and do what is right that we, who cannot do

anything that is good without you, may by your help be enabled to live according

to your will; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with

you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

THE WORD FIRST LESSON Joel 3:12 - 16

“Let the nations be roused;

let them advance into the Valley of Jehoshaphat,

for there I will sit

to judge all the nations on every side.

Swing the sickle,

for the harvest is ripe.

Come, trample the grapes,

for the winepress is full

and the vats overflow—

so great is their wickedness!”

Multitudes, multitudes

in the valley of decision!

For the day of the Lord is near

in the valley of decision.

The sun and moon will be darkened,

and the stars no longer shine.

The Lord will roar from Zion

and thunder from Jerusalem;

the earth and the heavens will tremble.

But the Lord will be a refuge for his people,

a stronghold for the people of Israel.

PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 18 Christian Worship Page 69

(5:00 & 7:45) Cong. (Refrain & Glory Be); Vocalists (Verses)

The LORD is my rock, my fortress and by deliverer;*

my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.

He reached down from on high and took hold of me;*

he rescued me from my powerful enemy.

He brought me out into a spacious place;*

he rescued me because he delighted in me.

Refrain

You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning;*

my God turns my darkness into light.

You save the humble*

but bring low those whose eyes are haughty.

You give me your shield of victory,*

and your right hand sustains me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND LESSON 1 Peter 4:1-8

Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, arm yourselves also with the same

attitude, because whoever suffers in the body is done with sin. As a result, they do not

live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of

God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—

living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They

are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap

abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the

living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who

are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to

the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may

pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.

ANTHEM “Heavenly Sower, You Have Gathered” 5:00 & 7:45 (Vocalists)

VERSE OF THE DAY (9:30)

Alleluia. My Word will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and

achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Alleluia.

GOSPEL Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43

M: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew.

C: Glory be to you, O Lord!

Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed

good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed

weeds among the wheat, and went away. When the wheat sprouted and formed heads,

then the weeds also appeared.

“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your

field? Where then did the weeds come from?’

“‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go

and pull them up?’ “‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you

may uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time

I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned;

then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’”

Page 7: Ninth Sunday After Pentecost - David's Star

7

Then he left the crowd and went into the house. His disciples came to him and said,

“Explain to us the parable of the weeds in the field.”

He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the

world, and the good seed stands for the people of the kingdom. The weeds are the

people of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the

end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.

“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the

age. The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom

everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing

furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will

shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear.

M: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,

died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the

dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father

almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of

saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

Lord of power and grace, whose eyes are on the righteous and whose ears are open to

their cry, hear the prayer of your people as we come now in thankfulness for the

mercies that you pour down on us anew each day.

We thank you for the gifts of your mighty providence. Make us mindful, O Lord, that

you have provided us with life, breath, and being and are the source of our daily bread.

We praise you for the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, whom you sent to be the Savior of

the world. Grant that we may believe in him with all our hearts, learning from him the

great truths of the kingdom to which he bore faithful witness.

Grant us your Holy Spirit, that we may produce the fruits of righteousness. May he

endow us with unwavering faith, that we might always be ready to do your will.

We pray for the nations of the earth. Subdue terror and tyranny everywhere, and call

forth leaders who acknowledge that you are Lord over all the earth. Bless our own

land. May it ever follow that which is good and turn from all that which is wicked, that

our people may prosper in uprightness and integrity.

Hear, O Lord, our cry for those who are afflicted. Grant them heath in body and soul,

and save them for your mercy’s sake.

Special prayers and intercessions may follow.

Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions.

Silent prayer.

Guide and uphold us during our pilgrimage in this world, and bring us all to our

heavenly home. Receive these petitions in the name of the Prince of life, Jesus our

Lord. Amen.

LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy

will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and

forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us

not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the

power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

M: Almighty God, grant to your Church the Holy Spirit and the wisdom that comes

from above. Let nothing hinder your Word from being freely proclaimed to the joy

and edifying of Christ’s holy people, so that we may serve you in steadfast faith

and confess your name as long as we live, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who

lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

M: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you.

The Lord look on you with favor and (+) give you peace.

C: Amen.
