Donatello’s statues express their emotions by

a scowl, a stare, a wondering gaze – Or by the

slightest gesture.

Unlike medieval sculptors, Donatello made a serious study of anatomy. In 1430, he

sculpted a bronze statue of David. It was the first free-standing nude statue since the days

of ancient Greece and Rome.

It was also the first major work of Renaissance sculpture. It was

displayed in Florence, Italy at the wedding of Lorenzo the

Magnificent at the courtyard of the Medici palace.

David is wearing no armor. He wears nothing at all except a floppy hat and a

pair of boots. David is so small and skinny that it is difficult to imagine him

slaying a giant.

An Equestrian Statue

In 1443, Donatello was commissioned to create a huge

statue of a famous ruler seated on a horse. No equestrian statue had been created since the days of the

Roman Empire.

This single statue launched all the equestrian monuments since. From then on, every

European ruler wanted a similar statue with his own face looking

like a Roman ruler!

B. David

In fact, David was Donatello’s masterpiece. Why did Donatello make David so small and completely naked? Probably to show that David could not have killed the giant without the help of

God.
