Topics include the role of the law enforcement firearms instructor, liability issues, instructor development, lesson plan development, basic marksmanship, shooter problem analysis, standard and non-traditional shooting positions, weapons transition, and tactical movement and cover. As of December 2018, this course meets the minimum instructor certification requirements to be a POST pistol, rifle, and shotgun instructor. Successful completions of all portions of the course, including all course work and firearms qualifications, are mandatory to receive certification. Partial certification will not be allowed. POST certification 2970-21640. Pass/No Pass. 1. Students are strongly encouraged to arrive on time in order to complete the registration process and avoid impeding instructional time. Late students who miss this process will not be allowed to attend the course. 2. The Safety Center does not loan out weapons, ammunition, or equipment for this course. Students are expected to bring their agency’s duty firearms, equipment, and ammunition. Please see below (page 3) for the comprehensive list of required and recommended items. 3. COURSE DESCRIPTION:

IMPORTANT NOTES:

This course is specifically designed to prepare experienced law enforcement personnel to teach firearms courses at the basic and in-service level. Topics include the role of the law enforcement firearms instructor, liability issues, instructor development, lesson plan development, basic marksmanship, shooter problem analysis, standard and non-traditional shooting positions, weapons transition, and tactical movement and cover. As of December 2018, this course meets the minimum instructor certification requirements to be a POST pistol, rifle, and shotgun instructor. Successful completions of all portions of the course, including all course work and firearms qualifications, are mandatory to receive certification. Partial certification will not be allowed. QUALIFICATION COURSE DETAILS The following safety and skills assessment courses of fire will be fired on the first day of the range training. A passing score must be fired in all qualification courses of fire before the student will be allowed to continue the course. No exceptions. The assessment courses will be fired one time for score. Visible laser aiming devices will not be allowed during any portion of the firearms qualification courses of fire.

MANIPULATION SKILLS ASSESSMENT The Manipulation Skills Assessment must be satisfactorily completed utilizing all firearms systems (handgun, rifle/carbine and shotgun).

PISTOL QUALIFICATION COURSE OF FIRE

1. The Pistol Qualification course of fire will be shot on the IALEFI-Q target (see attached).

2. The course of fire will be scored in two stages. Targets will be scored and replaced between each stage. An

overall passing score of 84% (42 out of 50 rounds) is needed to successfully pass the qualification.

3. Rounds must impact within the proper scoring zone to be counted. Rounds impacting on the scoring zone line

must break the line completely in order to be counted.

4. Rounds fired after the time limit will be deducted from the overall score.

5. Shooters will be responsible to clear malfunctions during the courses of fire. Additional time may be allowed if a

malfunction is encountered by the shooter so long as the shooter attempts to clear the malfunction.

6. Shooters are encouraged to keep their handguns properly loaded to complete each course of fire. If a shooter

runs out of ammunition during a course of fire, no additional time will be allotted.

SHOTGUN QUALIFICATION COURSE OF FIRE

1. The Shotgun Qualification course of fire will be shot on the IALEFI-Q target (see attached).

2. The course of fire will be scored in two stages. Targets will be scored between each stage.

3. An overall passing score of 80% (8 out of 10 slugs) is needed to successfully pass the first stage, (slugs). If a shooter fails the first stage they are disqualified for the entire qualification.

a. Only slugs will be fired during this stage. Any other shotgun ammunition fired will be cause for disqualification.

4. An overall passing score of 84% (adjusted for total number of 00 Buckshot pellets) is needed to pass the second stage. If a shooter fails the second stage they are disqualified for the entire qualification.

a. Only 00 Buckshot will be fired during this stage. Any other shotgun ammunition fired will be cause for disqualification.

15 yards 3 slugs No time limit Shooters will fire 3 slugs standing, no time limit.

2. Only 00 Buckshot will be fired during Stage 2. a. If any other shotgun ammunition is fired the shooter will be disqualified.

3. An overall passing score of 84% (adjusted for total number of 00 Buckshot pellets) is needed to pass the second stage.

Distance Rounds Time 15-10 yards 2 rounds 10 seconds Shooters will begin with their shotguns fully loaded with 00 Buckshot. Shooters will fire 2 rounds while moving forward to the 10 yard line. Shooters will stop at the 10 yard line.

10 yards 1 round (4 total) 3 seconds Shooters will begin facing 45 degrees to the right or left (as designated by instructor). Shooters will face the target and then fire 1 round in 3 seconds. Repeat for a total of 2X turning right and 2X turning left.

7 yards 2 rounds (4 total) 3 seconds Shooters will fire 2 rounds in 3 seconds. Repeat one time.
