Meeting Adjourned
Minutes February 6, 2017
Ellen called the meeting to order at 7:05 and welcomed everyone. We had a visitor
Jean Saunders and a guest speaker.
MaryAnn MacNabb-Walker presented about Woodstock Old Home Week Hobby
Show. This has been non-existent for the past eight years, and she is making an
effort to bring the Hobby Show back this summer. She had a handout for us and is
open to suggestions. She wants participation at the show from quilters, sewers,
knitters and other crafters. Facebook page is Woodstock old home week hobby
show. There will be ribbons awarded after judging for first, second, and third
place. There was a question about security and insurance. Security is be provided
when exhibits are not tended by volunteers. MaryAnn will check on insurance.
Approval of Agenda: Moved by Sandra Culberson and seconded by Kathy Boone the
approval of the agenda as published in February 2017 newsletter. Carried
Approval of minutes January meeting: Moved by Janet Melanson and seconded by
Diane Scott the approval of the minutes as published in February 2017 newsletter

Quilt Show 2017:
Betty informed members that we have 98 blocks and we are hoping for 150. We
want to have all the blocks so the “project” can be assembled by May.
Vendors at the quilt show will be accommodated by us. If you are willing to billet a
vender for two nights and provide them breakfast that would be appreciated.
Ticket sales are going well. Jackie offered to give people more tickets if you wish.
Also Jackie has a schedule for selling tickets at Sobeys, on March 24. If you wish
to volunteer see Jackie at break time. Janet Nichol will have a volunteer sign up
sheet for the actual show. Thursday to help with set up. Friday and Saturday to
help with the actual show. The raffle quilt is here tonight to see. An older quilt will
also be on display at the quilt show. Ageless NB will do a feature story on quilts in
the next issue.
Super Saturday: See the newsletter for requirements for the two options of Log
Cabin quilts for the February 18th Super Saturday.
March Super Saturday will be a retreat bag. Hardware will be provided for one bag
for each participant. If you wish to order more hardware, let Betty know so she can
get the order done.
April Super Saturday will be free motion quilting by Debra Flewelling.
May Super Saturday will be held by Margie Grieve. She is excited to be coming.
2017 Retreat:
Annette Dykeman spoke about the upcoming retreat in October. Registration form
is in the newsletter. Trisha noted an error in the registration form. A misplaced
“please”. Hard copies are available at meeting tonight.
Mystery Quilt:
Janet Wright noted that C2 is a 4 1/2 inch square. Janet showed the three blocks,
two of which you will make two. This is chapter two of five chapters. Final project
will be 48” x 48”.
Janet also passed on the two quilts to Portage NB. The quilts were graciously
accepted and it was noted that 30 of the 50 quilts have been donated.
Janet Melanson introduced the Oh Canada quilt pattern. If there are 10 people
interested, then Gail Mitchell from Fredericton will be contacted to come and
teach the project. It will be on a Saturday, and you will be expected to bring six
half meter fabrics of a color – washed and ready for cutting.
New Business –
Committee Reports, as per Newsletter February 2017
Library: It was discussed and agreed that names will be posted in the newsletter
for overdue books. Could we have a list of all library books on the website? Perhaps
or maybe on the facebook site.
Program:
We were saddened to hear that Doreen’s mom passed away last evening so she was
not in attendance at the meeting. Janet Melanson covered the program info. All
participants in the Red Challenge for February showed their project. March
challenge is “Spring”.
Stitchery Challenge is due for showing this month. There were three patterns and
they were all due to be put together for tonight. One name will be drawn for the
“Stitches from the Garden” book. Jackie Walker won the book! Congratulations.
Trisha Robinson presented a Color Wheel challenge. She did a presentation of the
basic color wheel. There are 12 colours on the wheel. You can get a color wheel at
paint stores or other outlets. By adding black or white, you can change the value of
the colour. By adding other colours to the main color, it changes the color and may
make it dull or bright. Primary colours are Red, Yellow, Blue. They come from
nature, in our environment. Secondary colours are green, orange, purple (violet) are
made by mixing two primary colours. To get the purest of secondary colours, you
need to use equal amounts of the two primary colours. The six Intermediate colours
are developed by using equal parts of primary and secondary colour. The middle of
the wheel is where the value scale comes into play. It is achieved by adding black or
white. (Black is the absence of colour and white is when our eye absorbs all the
colour light rays at the same time.) There are ten gradients between black and
white (various shades of grey) You can use a ruby red beholder, or take a digital
picture and then change it to black and white and you will see the difference in the
colour values. Temperature is also a consideration with colour. Red orange and
yellow are warm. Blue Green Purple are cool colours. If you add a warm (red) to a
purple, you will get a warm purple. Tertiary colours are found in the middle of the
colour wheel and they are earthy. Their purpose is to give harmony. They are
comprised of equal parts of the three primary colours. As you alter the amounts of
each primary colour, it tones or dulls the colour. A tertiary colour adds toning to a
quilt. It calms the colour down. The four colour properties are value, hue, tone and
temperature.
After a break, of coffee, library, and looking at the quilts, Sandra did the draw for
the fabrics. Winners were Kim Reeleder, Linda McAfee and Ann Gran
After an inspirational Show and Tell, meeting was adjourned at 9:15
Next meeting Monday March 6 2017.

Program Committee:
Hello girls! Are you ready for the April challenge? The challenge is Rain.
The March challenge was Spring is coming. I can’t wait to see them.
Last month Trish gave a talk on the color wheel. You will use the idea of the color
wheel to use the 5 colors that you will receive on guild night. The project that you
make will use these colors. It can be 24” x 24” to as big as 40” x 40”. It can be
square or rectangle, BUT you must use the colors you get. The background is as you
wish. You have 4 months to finish it. The colors must be pinned to your project
and a little write up of how you used your colors. The goal is how many colors you
can get from the 5 colors I give you. Have fun!
Everyone doing the beads we will be doing February and March. We have only April
and May left.
Also here are your 2 blocks of the month. They will all be from this website. The
address is http://www.quilterscache.com/
All these blocks will be 12” blocks.

Maple leaf Challenge
As of February meeting we have 114 blocks with only 40 members now participating.
I’m thinking we might send a picture in to the CQA Magazine to show how we are
celebrating Canada’a 150th Anniversary. Wouldn’t you like to see your block in a
National magazine. So get busy and make your block if you have not already done so.
Only 36 more to our goal. Remember I need your block before the quilt show, next
month would be good. . Thanks Janet M

Retreat
Just a reminder that, as always, our retreat is being held at the Villa Madonna. This year’s dates are Oct 19-22. Cost for the whole weekend, including meals, is $305.00. You will find the registration form in the newsletter. We are already one third full, ladies!! Lots of registrations came in last month. But we still have lots of room – cut off is 45 participants. Also, we will start a “ladies in waiting” list once we get full, so if there are cancellations we can fill the vacated spot. Just a reminder, after the April meeting we will be inviting non-members who attended last year, and then we will open it up to others. If you have never gone before, and are interested, don’t hesitate to ask us! It’s always a fun time, and you can get so much done with all the dedicated sewing time! Our phone numbers can be found on the registration form, or you can e-mail me at [email protected]. 2017 Retreat Co-ordinators, Linda, Terry & Annette
Instructors Report
We have booked Gail Mitchel on Saturday May 13th at St Gurt’s Hall to teach
the “Oh Canada Quilt”. She taught this class at EdVentures, Summer 2016 in
Fredericton and will be doing this class at the CQA in Toronto in July 2017. It is a
fun class where you buy a specific colour and trade with other members and end up
with enough kits to make the Quilt with 10 different colours. The cost of the class
will be $10.00 which includes the pattern. We will tell you what colour you are
responsible to buy, 6 (20 inch) or 1/2 a meter of fabric which must be washed and
pressed before class , at total of 3 meters of fabric to trade. Remember this is
meters not yards. Gail will tell us how to cut the Fabric at the class. Please see
Janet M or Diane Scott to sign up and pay at the next meeting. You will get your
instructions and the other material lists upon payment. Remember May 13th, one
week after the quilt show.
