    i. He was a Greek writer and philosopher,celebrated for his novel Zorbas the Greek.

    ii. Between 1922 and his death in 1957, he

    sojourned in Paris and Berlin (from 1922 to1924), Italy, Russia (in 1925), Spain (in 1932),and then later in Cyprus, Aegina, Egypt,Mount Sinai, Czechoslovakia, Nice, China and

    i. Kazantzakis discovered communism andbecame an admirer of Vladimir Lenin.

    ii. He witnessed the rise ofJoseph Stalin, andbecame disillusioned with Soviet-stylecommunism. Around this time, his earliernationalist beliefs were gradually replaced by

    a more universal ideology.iii. In 1945, he became the leader of a small party

    on the non-communist left, and entered theGreek government as Minister without

    Portfolio. He resigned this post the followingyear. In 1946, The Society of Greek Writersrecommended that Kazantzakis be awardedthe Nobel Prize for Literature.

    i. Late in 1957, even though suffering fromleukemia, he set out on one last trip to China

    and Japan.ii. Falling ill on his return flight, he was

    transferred to Freiburg, Germany, where he

    died.

    iii. He is buried on the wall surrounding the cityof Heraklion near the Chania Gate, becausethe Orthodox Church ruled out his being

    buried in a cemetery.iv. His epitaph reads "I hope for nothing. I fear

    nothing. I am free"

    i. I believe that Kazantzakis is one of the bestwriters in the whole world and of course the bestGreek writer! This because, his works transfer

    deeper meanings which instill many thoughts inthe mind of the reader!

    ii. I like also him because he had a revolutionaryspirit and stood opposition the church, catholic

    and orthodox too, which was so unfair with him!iii. Also we are grateful to him who left a huge

    project to descendants who may be inspired bythese!!
