    ThisselfportraitbyMoses(orMose)ErnestTolliver,aprolificartistfromMontgomery,Alabama,isoneofhismostintenseworks.Theredpaintdrippingfromtheupperlipandthestrongredlineseparatingthebared,gleamingwhiteteethevokespowerandterror,whiletheredborderfurtherenlivensthecomposition.Facialfeaturesarelopsided,nostrilsandeyesareofdifferentsizes,andtheunnervingeyesareshapedlikeverticaldrawerhandles.Thedarkbrownfaceiscrownedbytheclosecropped,curlywhitehairTolliverhadfromanearlyage.AndontopofTolliver'sheadisadecorativehandlelikeobjectthattheartistcalleda"headbob."

  • formaleducation,andmuchofhisearlyliferevolvedaroundfarmrelatedchores.Whenhewasateenager,heandhismothermovedtonearbyMontgomery,whereheperformedoddjobsandtookspecialpleasureinyardworkandgardening.HemarriedWillieMaeThomasintheearly1940s,andtheyhadelevenchildren.Fordecades,TolliverworkedintheshippingdepartmentofthelocalMcClendonFurnitureFactory.Afteraninjurytohislegsforcedhimtoleavehisjob,hetookupart.

    Tolliverpaintedabstractsingleimagesofpeople,animals,fantastichalfman/halfanimalhybrids,plantlife,andvehicles,aswellasmultifigurednarratives.Sexualimageryprevailsinwhattheartistcalledhis"nasty"pictures.Andawrysenseofhumorisevidentinallthepaintings,manyofwhichhaveimaginativetitles.Tolliverusedhousepaintinapalettetypicallylimitedtoafewcolorsbrown,blue,white,andredinthisworkfromwhichhewasabletocreateavarietyoftonalgradationswithwetonwetapplication.
