NIGHT & DAY WORKS 2015-6The Canonical Hours Project
These works are an extension of a 2014-5 project inspired by a poem, The Canonical Hours, by W.H. Auden. They continue to explore sensations of time and place using color, movement and light. The larger canvases try to capture a feeling at specific times of the day:
1. Waking up (prime)2. 3PM (nones)3. Meeting of Night and Day (vespers)4. Falling Asleep (compline)5. Dreamtime (matins)
WAKING UP (PRIME) 2015acrylic on canvas, 64 x 48 inches
“Both light and shadow are the dance of love...”
- from a poem by Rumi
3PM (BEFORE OR AFTER THE STORM?) 2015acrylic on canvas, 62 x 45 inches
Isn’t it sometimes hard to tell the difference between the time the storm is about to hit and the time right after it has passed?
FALLING ASLEEP (COMPLINE) 2015acrylic on canvas, 64 x 48 inches
Feeling the weight of gravity and a sense of being lifted at the same time
DREAMTIME (MATINS) 2015acrylic on canvas, 64 x 57 inches
There is so much mystery in the night. A painting about the colors and shapes of the night is even a mystery to me -- truly like a dream.
