Dear Friends, The other day I was talking to the children in school about New Year Resolutions; they had some really bright ideas about what they should change in their lives. When I saw them it was almost two weeks into the New Year, some of them were keeping to their resolutions, whilst some were struggling. I tried to get over to them that in life we don’t have to wait until the next New Year in order to ‘sort our lives out’, but having a significant moment can be helpful. In all our lives we face ‘crucial moments’ when we have to choose in which direction(s) we need to address something. Those crucial moments in which we choose directions for our lives aren’t usually marked with caution signs, bright red flags, or even the feeling that we are about to make a big decision. Some of the decisions that matter most slip by without our even noticing. Some of the choices that seem small are bigger than the ones that appear big. Because the sacred is present in the ordinary, we can’t be sure that any decision is unimportant. Because life is holy, every moment matters. Every day and hour is crucial. One afternoon, Jesus was walking beside a lake when he sees two men in a rowing boat waiting for unsuspecting fish to wander into their nets.

It’s hard to believe what happens next. Jesus offers them a job with no pay, and they accept: ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people’. Had the sales pitch been, ‘Come and make more money than you could ever make fishing,’ then it might make sense. But this invitation and response seem unlikely. Four fishermen drop what they are doing and head off to God-knows-where, to live lives they can’t imagine. People always try to explain away ‘big-fish’ stories, and this one is no exception. They say it sounds more unlikely to us than it would have to people in the first century. The disciples’ instant acceptance of Jesus’ peculiar invitation is as dramatic as any moment we will ever encounter. On occasion, we face big decisions about family, jobs, and faith. We stand at a fork in the road and have to choose. We have moments when we feel that we have to act in a particular way for reasons that we cannot completely explain. We feel the need to sacrifice something we would rather keep in order to allow change to happen. We have taken a few big risks. But most of the time, it isn’t that dramatic. We don’t drop everything to start a new life very often. We tend to forget the importance of details in our journey of life, our journey of faith. We focus on dramatic conversions, overwhelming encounters

with God, and powerful moments of prayer. We search for peak experiences and end up assuming that some people are born with a spiritual talent that we just don’t have. Slowly but surely our priorities change. On the day they first followed Jesus, the disciples were brash, impulsive, stubborn, and they smelled of fish. They had to learn day by day how to be the followers of Jesus, how to be the church. We grow in faith, not only in memorable, never-to-be-forgotten moments, but also in forgettable moments when we decide to have some quiet time instead of Pau

turning on the headphones, to do better with the next hour than we did with the last, and to give something that we would rather keep. We become faithful as we confess a misspent hour, an unnecessary word, or a wasted opportunity. We start to follow again and again. We take a step in the right direction, to begin anew to live with purpose, hope, and love; and to do that, we don’t have to wait for the New Year.

FIRST ANGLICAN WOMEN FIRST ANGLICAN WOMEN FIRST ANGLICAN WOMEN FIRST ANGLICAN WOMEN BISHOPS APPOINTED BY THIS BISHOPS APPOINTED BY THIS BISHOPS APPOINTED BY THIS BISHOPS APPOINTED BY THIS CHRISTMAS ?CHRISTMAS ?CHRISTMAS ?CHRISTMAS ?

Mr William Fittall, the General Secretary of the Church of England’s General Synod - the law-making body of the Church of England - has said at a Press Conference that is is “entirely conceivable” that the first woman bishop in the Church of England could be appointed by Christmas 2014.

Mr Fittall, in a press briefing about the agenda for the next meeting of the General Synod in February, said that this timescale was possible, although, he cautioned, not certain by any means.

Last November, the Synod voted by 378 votes to 8 to welcome new proposals for the appointment of women bishops.

This February, the next meeting of the Synod will consider the draft legislation in

a fast-tracked procedure. If this is approved, each diocese have up to 3 months (Synod is being asked to reduce this period from the normal 6 months) to consider the legislation. This will enable final approval to be given at the General Synod meeting due to be held in York in July.

Any legislation to appoint women bishops still has to be formally approved in Parliament by the Ecclesiastical Committee, but the proposed timescales will enable this to start as soon as the York meeting of Synod has taken place. This will lead to Royal Assent, and final, formal approval by the meeting of the General Synod in November.

As soon as this has happened, it would be legally possible to appoint a woman as a Bishop.

And “there is no shortage of vacancies coming up” said Mr Fittall.

The Mice Who Ate ChristmasThe Mice Who Ate ChristmasThe Mice Who Ate ChristmasThe Mice Who Ate Christmas Maureen Long Performed in Hunsingore on 13 December, this new play by Kate Bramley got off to a slightly slow start, but quickly accelerated thanks to the cast of two’s boundless energy.

In brief, one Christmas Eve a granny mouse told her grandchildren a story about two of her ancestors, Edna and Wilbur, who, in 1818, tried to make their way to Switzerland, a land where the streets were known to be paved with cheese (and the mountains made of Toblerone)

Wilbur was hoping that Swiss inventors would help him to patent his design for an eternal churn which would mean that no mouse would ever go hungry again.

Zoë Land and John Mulleany played out the story with the help of mouse puppets who peeped out appealingly from behind the scenery.

There were hazards along the way for the intrepid mice and they narrowly avoided being eaten by a villainous Captain Cat-Sparrow (who was roundly booed by the discerning audience).

Eventually Wilbur and Edna were swept by an avalanche to Austria where they took shelter in a cold church. (Cold church inhabited by mice! Sure it wasn't Hunsingore?)

Wilbur noticed a structure that looked remarkably like the churn he had designed, thought there might be cheese in it and took a bite, not realising he had bitten through the bellows of the church organ!

This disaster was discovered by the parish priest and the cleaning lady (who bore a striking resemblance to Julie Walters’ character in Acorn Antiques - Mrs Overall!)

Then the priest overheard one of the mice plucking the strings of his guitar, Edna admitted that the mice were to blame for the silent organ and the stage was set for a hearty rendering of "Silent Night" before we were all wished a Merry Christmouse.

All credit must go to the cast who played all the parts between them, sang, danced played the guitar and were never offstage for more than a moment or two. Such energy and versatility, all just what we have come to expect from a Badapple production.

It was a full house, and Jane and her team of helpers coped magnificently serving delicious food to such a large number - and there was even apple pie and cream for dessert! We all appreciate the work they do on these theatre evenings.

We had also been promised a short dance routine by the only two children in the audience, but, apparently overcome by stage fright, they fled! However, their talents were put to good use when they helped Paul to draw the raffle, always a highlight of these events.

We have already taken our first journey of the term by catching the train from Kirk Hammerton and travelling to York Station, where we walked to the Castle Museum.

The KS1 and KS2 children took part in two different workshops – Bread and Butter and The Swinging 60s and had the opportunity to follow trails around the museum. This proved to be a fantastic day with the children learning promoted by this experiential approach which as our definition of learning is 'when you know, can do or can explain something you couldn't

before'.

As part of the Wider Opportunity Programme ran by North Yorkshire, we are continuing on to becoming brilliant musicians by all learning to play the ukulele. The children have had their second lesson and have progressed to knowing three chords.

We are also in the process of working towards our Eco-schools award which is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life.

More news will follow as we continue on our journey.

Head Teacher

Sue Fernyhough reports

This year’s Christmas performance of ‘Stable Manners’ has received great reviews from parents and friends.

Back in Bethlehem, the animals are all keen to inherit Neddy’s stable, only for the angles Gabriel and Luke to decide that Neddy’s place is the ideal location for Jesus’ birth.

As preparations continue against a backdrop of animal bickering, Mary and Joseph arrive for the great day and at last, the animals see sense and decide to live in harmony. All the children had speaking parts and everybody sang with gusto and commitment. It was commented this was the best Christmas play they had seen at Nun Monkton School.

We ended the term with our version of the Nativity in St. Mary's Church. There was a fantastic turnout and everyone joined in with the carols. Parents stated they were very impressed by the confidence shown by the children who spoke with clear intonation.

Everyone has returned to school rested and ready to learn in what will prove to be an exciting term.

The whole school is now taking swimming lessons every week this term at Tadcaster Pool. It has already been recognised by instructors how confidently the children can already swim and they are only on the first week.

Our school topic this term is Journeys. Journeys. Journeys. Journeys.

Mr Joe Cooper reports: We've had a fun-packed start back to 2014 at Kirk Hammerton CE Primary School. After a typically busy Christmas we are still counting up the funds we raised for Martin House's Goodnight's Sleep Appeal from sales of our charity CD (over £300 we think!).

Along with our partnership school, Staveley Community Primary, we recorded a re-written version of The Pogues (and Kirsty MacColl)'s 'Fairytale of New York': 'Fairytale of Yorkshire' (lyrics below). After the song was played on Stray FM we were visited by Adam Tomlinson from the Radio York breakfast show,. His interviews with children and staff allowed us to see what goes into a radio interview - very interesting!

This term the whole school has a international and multicultural focus to their topic as we look at different people and places around the world. We look forward to the visit of Dee Spice, who will show us flavours and share experiences from Sri Lanka, and a visitor from Paraguay who can help us with our Spanish pronunciation. The younger children are taking a wonderful ride on Miranda the Explorer's balloon as it travels around different locations, while the older children will compare locations and learn about the culture of Africa and India.

This week we have also been lucky enough to have a sports-focused day. The reception children had a fitness, nutrition and sports day in school with our excellent sports specialist, Edd Mason,

while the older children visited the English Sports Institute in Sheffield. Our tiring day included taster sessions of boxing, badminton and athletics on the 200m international-standard track. We briefly met paralympians from the British table tennis team but missed gold medallist boxer Nicola Adams as she was opening a new facility elsewhere.

If you are interested in coming to look round our school please get in contact with Emma Miller, our Executive Headteacher, on 01423 330460, or visit our website and blog to see what we have been up to:

Fairytale of Yorkshire - lyrics by Joe Cooper It’s nearly Christmas Day, And Yorkshire leads the way, There’s plenty to celebrate, Twenty fourteen will be great. Let’s make it Yorkshire’s year, Le Tour’ll soon be here, And everyone’s queuing up, To pay a visit here. We’ve got rhubarb and ale, Yorkshire tea is on sale, Yorkshire puddings and pikelets, Served best in the dales. From mountain to coast, Though we don’t like to boast, It’s flippin’ fantastic, The place we love most. We’ve got Knaresborough Castle, Once ruled by King John, York Minster’s amazing, And so is Ripon, There’s Harewood and Brodsworth, Sledmere and Ripley, Harlow Carr, Fountains Abbey, Lightwater Valley. And the Kirk and Staveley children’s choirs,And the Kirk and Staveley children’s choirs,And the Kirk and Staveley children’s choirs,And the Kirk and Staveley children’s choirs, Will be singing all the way,Will be singing all the way,Will be singing all the way,Will be singing all the way, And the Yorkshire bells will ring for Christmas And the Yorkshire bells will ring for Christmas And the Yorkshire bells will ring for Christmas And the Yorkshire bells will ring for Christmas Day.Day.Day.Day.

The first Monday in February has become known as ‘National Sickie Day’. It is the day when we are most likely to ring in sick and depressed, with wintry weather, credit card bills and a long wait until the next holiday all catching up with us. Post-Christmas blues, fear of a flu outbreak, and financial worries will hit up to 375,000 of us on the 3rd. The cost to the economy could exceed £32 million, according to business advisers ELAS, who warn “more bosses have drifted into accepting texts and emails as confirmation that staff will not be heading into work - making it easier for

staff to get away with taking a ‘duvet day’.” The Bible offers a better solution than staying under the duvet: ‘Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.’ (Psalm 42:11)

COWTHORPE COMMUNITY COWTHORPE COMMUNITY COWTHORPE COMMUNITY COWTHORPE COMMUNITY FORUM ADOPT A LOGOFORUM ADOPT A LOGOFORUM ADOPT A LOGOFORUM ADOPT A LOGO Shortly after Niddside News’ last edition went to press, a Design Awards Supper, kindly hosted by Roger and Jacqui Marsden, was held to announce the winner of a competition held among the young people of Cowthorpe to find a logo for the Community Forum.

Jacqui writes:

The event was to celebrate the skill and effort of our youngsters who had participated in the competition. The first prize was sponsored by Goosemoor Organics which included a gift token and the development of the winning idea by a graphic designer into a digital logo for use by the Forum.

Such was the generosity of many households within Cowthorpe that we were able to award prizes or gifts to all who entered.

The award supper of homemade steak pie with vegetables with alternatives of pizza or red onion & goat’s cheese tartlets was followed by delicious fruit crumbles and enjoyed by all of the 28 who sat down to

eat. Over 30 people attended.

The MC for the Award presentation was BBC presenter Tanya Arnold and the prizes were presented by Arnold Warneken (Goosemoor Organics). The overall winner of the CCF Logo Design Competition was Matt Livesey.

The funds raised from the Logo Awards event was used as a basis for another event at Highfield Villa on 11th December. The fund was supplemented by further donations of cash and from some residents within the village to provide a traditional 3 course Christmas Lunch for the senior and in some cases less mobile members of our community.

The meal was supplemented by a fantastic cheeseboard with port, mince pies, tea & coffee with mints and liqueurs. Wine had flowed throughout the meal.

Twenty three of our village community fully enjoyed this event together with two wonderful younger helpers who did a fantastic job.

Already we have been asked if the event will be repeated next year.

Winner Matt Livesy with Tania Arnold and Arnold Warneken

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF

THE FRENCH TOWN OF

LOURDES ?

Lourdes is a little town near the border

of France with Spain which became

famous in 1858 when mother a teenage

girl called Bernadette, went out to

collect wood to keep her family. She

came running back and told her amazed

parents that St Mary, the mother of

Jesus had appeared to her in a nearby

cave, dressed in blue and white

St Mary appeared a total of 18 times to

Bernadette, and instructed her to tell

the local priests to make a procession to

the cave (a ‘grotto’) and build a chapel

there.

At first, the priests refused to believe

Bernadette’s story because she was just

a young, uneducated girl and forbade her

from going back to the cave. But

Bernadette did anyway, and on one visit

St Mary told her to dig a hole in the

floor. Water began to flow from it and

although it was very muddy at first, it got

clearer and cleaner.

People who were ill and bathed in the

water in the cave reported that they got

better, and many miraculous cures were

reported.

In 1860, the Roman Catholic Church

reported that St Mary had truly appeared

to Bernadette.

Bernadette herself went on to become a

nun and was declared a Saint by the Pope

in 1933. Today thousands of people visit

Lourdes every year praying for a cure.
