Our first annual Patriot Golf Day charity tournament turned out to be a big success, attracting 133 players and generating more than $14,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships for children and spouses of military men and women killed or disabled while serving the nation.

Four Davis Monthan airmen captured fi rst place in the Stableford competi-tion. Donations by Ventana members also covered golf and dinner for the more than 80 military personnel who partici-pated.

For more information on this event, read Brandon Smith’s report on page 3.

Most members are aware that golf course overseeding has begun in preparation for the high season. Th is is a time to remind ourselves that golf is a game with a admirable heritage of camaraderie and decorum. It needs no referees on each hole to enforce the rules and monitor behavior. Players monitor themselves and self-report their infractions, assessing associated penalty strokes.

For the most part that heritage gov-erns play here at Ventana and else-where in the country club world. We all know that play is restricted to a single course during overseeding, and when a newly overseeded course opens, golf carts are restricted to the cart paths for several weeks. Both realities slow play to a certain extent. Th e alternative is to close both courses for overseeding, which is the policy at some neighbor-ing clubs.

Our choice has been to keep one course open, recognizing that this option results in crowding but does guarantee access for those members who want to play.

We also recognize that resort guests

who are unfamiliar with the course generally play a little slower than mem-bers. Sometimes members who secure tee times on the resort course of the day react negatively to this, forgetting that the bylaws stipulate guaranteed

access to the resort course by those guests.

Other than elementary cour-tesy, there is a very practical reason to welcome these guests and hope that their positive experience of Ventana is maxi-mized. Many of our current members joined aft er just such an experience. A negative

encounter with an impatient member foursome makes further interest in the club extremely unlikely.

Last month I mentioned that there would be special entertainment at this year’s Season Opener, our most popular annual event, on November 5. Adding to the festive atmosphere will be a performance by the percus-sion section of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. George Hanson, Conductor of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and club member has been instrumental in bringing the TSO to the club for our get together to kick off the new season.

Finally, I recommend that everyone review the on-line video below explain-ing the new, easy, life-saving cardiopul-monary resuscitation technique devel-oped at the U of A College of Medicine. Th e video is available at http://tinyurl.com/2fx8r59 Anyone who views this video will come away with enough information to intervene, if necessary, in a situation where someone’s life is on the line. No certifi cation is required to employ this method. It is well worth your time.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Monday, September 13th, Ventana Canyon played host to its fi rst annual Patriot Golf Day event. In the planning stages for nearly a year, tireless eff ort by many commit-tee members came to fruition in a spectacular event. While expectations were high, no one could have foreseen the incredible support and involve-ment from our membership and community. Due to the sponsorship opportunity presented to the Ventana Membership, enough money was raised to sponsor over 80 service men and women from Davis Monthan AFB and the Arizona Air National Guard. For many it was their fi rst introduction to Ventana Canyon and

their response was nothing short of amazing. Th eir gratitude for putting on the event was very heartfelt and for Ventana Canyon it was defi nitely a great way to say thank you for their service to our country and commu-nity.

In total, 133 players came out to participate in a fun and competitive Stableford event. Four servicemen from Davis Monthan AFB, Darryl Darnell, Tim Fleck, Jason Handa, and Russ Sullivan took home 1st place with 60 points. All players were treated to a fantastically prepared golf course and delicious dinner.

Over $14, 000 dollars was raised and will be donated to the Folds of

Honor Founda-tion on behalf of Ventana Can-yon. Th is money will provide scholarships to families of service men and women who have been wounded or killed in the line of duty.

Th ank you all again for your sup-port of this great cause and we are looking forward to what is in store for this event in the future.

The Culinary Team is excited about our patio venue and all the enjoy-ment that the membership can have dining outside. Th e refi nished patio pro-vides an opportunity for food and fun for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please consider enjoying the patio for brunch as well. We will have brunch every Sunday starting Octo-ber 3 at 10:00 a.m. Our buff et continues to be an excellent value for the price. A new highlight of the Sunday Brunch will be the addition of a Bloody Mary bar. Select from among several pre-mium vodkas and bases of tomato juice, V8, Clamato and Mr. & Mrs. T’s Bloody Mary Mix. Th en add your personal favorite “additions” from a list too long to mention. I think this will be one of the most popular features of the Sunday

Brunch throughout the year.Happy Hour every Friday from 5:00-

6:00 p.m. will feature a variety of sliders. Th e menu will change from week to week. Our food and NFL team pairings will continue on Monday nights. Th ese American regional classics take us from town to town and provide a taste of home.

Many of you know I’m a Steelers fan. Pittsburgh plays this year on November 8, so count on some awesome pierogies that evening.

On Sundays we will have fi ft y-cent hot wings in increments of eight all day-long.

Th e up and coming season will be fi lled with plenty of opportunities to enjoy your membership by dining at the club. Our fi rst wine dinner of the fall season will be on Monday, Octo-ber 25. Nickel & Nickel and FarNiente Wineries will both be represented. Th ey shared the same ownership but the

wines are made in very diff erent styles. Th is will be a fabulous experience. If the demand is there, we are prepared to repeat the Monday experience the fol-lowing evening.

As you might imagine, preparation for a wine dinner is a major challenge for the Culinary Team. In that process I rely greatly on my right arm, Executive Sous Chef Matt McGee. Whether it is a major event such as a wine dinner or seeing to it that your order in any of our dining venues is executed to meet your expectations, Matt has been and contin-ues to be a vital part of our team.

Other highlights during the month will be Burger Bar on Th ursday, Oc-tober 14, and Oktoberfest on Tuesday, October 19. Both events will take place on the outdoor patio, weather and bugs permitting.

See you soon. Chef John

Our Team Does Very Well at El Paso Tournament

TENNIS

What a great time Ventana’s 9.0 Mixed Team had in El Paso this past weekend at the Mixed Section-als. Th ere were many hard fought matches through-out the event, but the crown went to the Greater El Paso Tennis As-sociation’s (GEPTA) team who went through the tournament with only one team loss.

Th at’s right, the GEPTA team only had one loss during the weekend defeating all teams including Phoe-nix (CAZ), Northern New Mexico

(NNM), Southern New Mexico (SNM), and Southern Arizona (SAZ) represented by Tucson Racquet Club. However, there was one team they could not defeat...it was the team cap-tained by Ventana Club member Su Wen Chang....it was the Ventana Can-yon Mixed Team who handed GEPTA their only loss of the weekend!!!

By defeating El Paso with a score of 2 courts to 1, I believe that makes the Ventana Team the best, right?

Regardless, I am extremely proud of Ventana’s Mixed 9.0 team and thank them for representing the club so well. Th is is a team that almost “didn’t happen” because of the num-ber of players needed to fi eld the

team, but it was the tenacity and leadership of Su Wen Chang who con-tinued to work to put together a team made of members and guests.

So congratulations 9.0 team for a great season and for representing Ventana Canyon in sectionals! Be-tween all the theme songs, horrible zoo smells, karaoke, defeat of GEPTA, and all the friendships made, El Paso will always remember the team from Ventana Canyon as a great team made up of great people!

SCOTT ANDERS

Tip of the Month

The new shot in tennis: The Dip DriveBecause of the new grips players are using versus the

conventional grips taught years ago, doubles players are us-ing this new shot as a weapon in today’s game. Th is is why you see professionals “staying back” in doubles where as teaching pros have always told students to serve and volley 100% of the time. Th e reason the new shot is being used in doubles is because players are using a semi-western or a full western grip. Th is shot is hit at shoulder level or above and driven to the opponents with a lot of spin. Th e shot comes in fast and “dips” right at the opponents feet making them hit a low volley up to the other team.

It still holds true that the team that controls the net in doubles wins the match. If you are choosing to stay back in your doubles play, make sure your groundstrokes are capable of controlling the net with shots such as the Dip Drive. Let us help you learn this shot and soon you’ll be frustrating your opponents with commanding ground-strokes!

Will summer ever end? We con-tinue to experience 100 plus degree-days as we near the end of September. Th e warm temperatures are giving the Bermudagrass an extended growing period. Th e warm-er than normal tempera-tures can have a negative impact on the overseeding process as the Bermuda-grass will continue to grow and compete against the Perennial Ryegrass. We will continue to apply herbicide ap-plications to slow the growth of the Bermudagrass until cooler tempera-tures arrive.

Th e Mountain overseed has been completed and is scheduled to open on Monday, October 11. Th e Canyon course is scheduled to close on Mon-

day, October 11 and will re-open on Saturday, October 30. As a reminder

both courses will be cart-path only until the end of November.

Once the golf courses open from overseeding, please pay extra atten-tion when fi lling divots and repairing ballmarks. Th e overseeded turf of Ryegrass will be approxi-mately 14 days old when

the golf course opens and will need time to mature. Th e golf courses will be moist and greenspeeds will be slow as the new grass becomes established. Height of cut will be lowered as the overseeded turf ma-tures. Please obey the cartpath only policy and remain on the cartpaths at all times.

Rainfall year-to-date is at 14.60”, which is a little over the average of 14.20”. Please keep in mind this year’s rainfall total is skewed as we received over 9” of rain during the winter rain-fall season. Rainfall for the monsoon period is approximately 4” below average.

Th ank you in advance for your pa-tience and understanding during the overseeding process. We only get one chance to overseed and this will be the product for the upcoming season.

Congratulation to Brandon SmithWe want to congratulate Brandon Smith for his fi rst place fi nish in winning the PGA Southwest Section Championship at the Coyote Spring Golf Club in Las Vegas August 24 – 26. His fabulous 54 hole score of seven under par was good for a one stroke victory in winning the section championship and qualifying him to compete in the PGA Tour FBR Open this February.

MARIE MIYASHIRO QUALIFIES for the U.S. Senior Wom-en’s Amateur Championship to be held at the 5,862-yard, par 72 Fiddlesticks Country Club in Fort Mey-ers, Florida, October 9-14, 2010. This is one of 12 national championsships hosted by the United States Golf Association. 543 entires were received for sec-tional qualifying at 23 sites across the United States. It will be Marie’s third national championship event.

She qualifi ed to represent Hawaii in 1997 State Team Championships, and also qualifi ed for the 1997 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Champinship where she be-came the fi rst woman from Hawaii to advance to the match play portion of the championship and won her fi rst round match. GOLF

THIS IS A REMINDER to all return-ing Ventana Canyon Golf & Racquet Club Members. Your last 20 summer golf scores should be posted in the Arizona Golf Association handicap system. These can be posted through our handicap computers or please contact the golf shop staff for assis-tance in recording your scores. Please provide slope and course rating information along with scores to be posted.

According to the USGA Handicap System, no player has an inherent right to a Handicap Index without providing full evidence of his / her ability to the Handicap Commit-tee charged with administering the handicap system. Two basic prem-ises involving Player Responsibility underlie the USGA Handicap Sys-tem and serve as guide for Handicap Committee:

The player will try to make the 1. best score at every hole in every round regardless of where the round is played andThe player will post every accept-2. able score for peer review.

The maximum score on a hole is dependant on your handicap:

0 – 9 Double Bogey 10 – 19 7 20 – 29 8 30 – 39 9 40-Over 10

If you fail to complete a hole it is your responsibility to score the hole as “your most likely” score.

An “acceptable score” doesn’t require a full 9 or 18 hole round. In general, you should post every time you play more than 6 holes, and when in doubt, ask the golf shop.

The Ventana Canyon Handicap Committee is charged with the re-sponsibility or reviewing score cards turned in after your rounds. Please assist the Committee by providing full information on the card including all players’ last names, local numbers, dates played and signatures of the players scoring the card.

Thank YouHandicap Committee

POOL & SWIM TEAM NEWSWater Very Cold at La Jolla

EACH SEPTEMBER FOR THE PAST 10 years, about 25 Ventana swimmers have participated in the La Jolla roughwater swim. Members of our Masters swimmers swam the one-mile race in La Jolla Cove, while many of our age group swimmers have competed in the three-mile swim. Several of our swimmers did quite well. This year was no excep-tion. Ventana Canyon sent over 25 athletes to race in La Jolla. While last year’s ocean boasted 10 foot waves, this year we had a calm sea. Calm as it was, mother nature had the last laugh. Our swimmers raced in water temperatures between 55 and 58 degrees. BRRRRR! Only fi ve of our swimmers had trouble with the cold water. Two small children didn’t get in, two left before the end of the race and one swim coach, Jared Grinney, completed his three-mile race, then immediately was wrapped in blan-kets! Approximately 100 athletes were pulled from the ocean this year due to the cold.

We had several fi rst timers this year. Daryl Ross, Talia Peckham, Valaya Gaudet, Mike Sharkey, Mary Duran, Cecily Davies and Jesse Hansen all swam the one-mile race for the fi rst time, while 9 year old Nathan Pagel and 10 year old Ivan Pereira swam the quarter mile. Other participants in the race included Marta Ketchel, Pam Ambrosio, John Sarikas, Grant Ross, Stephanie Friend, Ivy Pingry, Mary Duran, Katie Noonan, Eden Britt, Gabby Croft and employees Olivia Friend and Lisa Walls. Employee, Mike Southworth, earned a 4th place medal for his three-mile ocean swim! Great job everyone!

Masters team currently has about 20 members. We would love to have more swimmers. We take all levels

of swimmers and train each swimmer according to ability. Many of our cur-rent swimmers learned how to swim on this team. Our team trains from 9:00-10:00 a.m. each weekday morn-ing. One day a month the group gets together for an activity away from the pool, such as breakfast or a movie. Come join the fun. Maybe next year you can be a part of the La Jolla Roughwater Swim!

Our age group team is loaded with 10 year olds and younger! That is a lot of hyperactivity in the pool at one time. If the Coaches look exhausted, we are, but we are sure having fun. It is not to late to sign your swim-mers up for the team. Call 577-1400, ext. 336 or drop by the pool for more information.

SWIM TEAM HOURS:13-18 Years of Age 3:30-5:30 p.m.8 and Under 4:15-5:00 p.m.9-12 Years of Age 4:30-6:00 p.m.

On another note, swim lessons will continue throughout the winter, weather permitting. Michael Murphy, Jared Grinney and Lisa Walls are all available for teaching. Don’t hesitate to call to schedule lessons.

By Rebecca Abma

Where can you find more than a dozen essential nutrients for less than 100 calories? Look no further than the egg. One large egg contains about 75 calories and 6 grams of protein. For someone on a 2,000-calorie diet, that translates to 10 percent of the daily recommendation of protein for less than 4 percent of calories. What's more, one egg packs a nutritional punch with vi-tamins A, B6, B12, D and E, along with ribofl avin, folate, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and zinc. Eggs are one of very few foods that contain naturally occurring vitamin D. Most of an egg's nutrients are in the yolk, though more than half the protein is in the white.

In fact, research published in a 2000 issue Journal of the American College of Nutrition found the daily nutrient intake of people who ate eggs was signif-icantly greater for all nutrients (except dietary fi ber) than that of people who did not regularly consume eggs. Even more interesting, those who ate more than four eggs a week were found to have lower blood cholesterol levels than those who ate less than one egg a week.

Eggs and your heartPerhaps the biggest myth about eggs

is that they're bad for your heart. Two decades ago, egg's cholesterol content - about 200 milligrams (mg) per egg yolk - put them on the watch-list of artery clogging food. Since then, scientists have found no link between the dietary

cholesterol found in eggs and high serum cholesterol levels associated with heart disease risk.

Th e most recent study found that regular egg consumption does not in-crease the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke in healthy adults. Research-ers tracked more than 9,500 adults over a 20-year period and found those who consumed more than six eggs a week were no more likely to suff er a stroke or coronary artery disease than those who ate one egg or less a week. However, in people with diabetes, researchers cau-tion further study is needed, because there may be an increased risk among those who consume more than six eggs per week.

Th ere were only 349 people with dia-betes in the study, and "the patients with diabetes who ate one to six eggs a week were not at a higher risk, so perhaps that is the tolerated threshold for diabetics," explains study author Adnan Qureshi, M.D., executive director of the Minne-sota Stroke Initiative and a professor at the University of Minnesota.

"Eggs off er a good source of high biological value protein that's low in saturated fat and trans fat," explains New Jersey-based dietitian and diabetes educator Beverly Herman-Rivera, R.D., C.D.E. "If you reduce the amount of yolks you eat and more egg whites, why avoid eggs?"

Cholesterol confusion aside, eggs con-tain nutrients that are essential for heart health, such as the B vitamins choline, folate and B12, which can help reduce

homocysteine levels. Studies show high homocysteine levels may increase your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke and peripheral vascular disease. Eat-ing more eggs has also been found to increase HDL, the "good" cholesterol, and even lower blood pressure.Eggs and your waist

If eggs bring to mind greasy-spoon diners and fattening meals, think again. A 2004 study suggests eggs may be the perfect diet food. In the study, researchers compared the satiety and hunger levels of overweight patients aft er a breakfast of either eggs or bagels. Th ough both meals contained the same amount of calories, those who dined on eggs reported greater feelings of satiety before lunch and ate fewer calories than the bagel eaters during the remainder of the day.

A 2007 follow-up study, funded by Th e American Egg Board, found dieters who consumed eggs for breakfast lost 65 percent more weight and had an 83 percent greater decrease in waist cir-cumference than dieters who ate bagels for breakfast.

An egg breakfast may also be good for your blood sugar. "Including a source of protein in a meal will blunt the curve and elongate the glucose peak following meals, resulting in lower postprandial blood sugar levels," adds Herman-Rive-ra. "You'll also feel fuller longer than if you ate a breakfast without protein."
