Nick Robinson and Casey White crowned King and Queen On Saturday, December 8,

2007 Nick Robinson and Casey White were crowned VHS Home-coming King and Queen.

Homecoming week was De-cember 3rd through December 7th. Students participated in a variety of activities throughout the week.

Monday was Pajama Day and Tuesday was Movie Character Day, with volleyball as the noon activity. Wednesday was Crazy Day, with an obstacle course at lunchtime. Thursday was Twin Day with a basketball relay for the noontime activity. Friday was Spirit Day with everyone's favor-ite lunchtime activity, tug of war. The Seniors blew the competition away coming in first place, Sophomores took second fol-lowed by Juniors and Freshmen.

On Friday the Homecoming skits and speeches were followed by the lip syncs, which were the highlight of the week. The Jun-iors took home the victory com-ing in first place, with the help of their class sponsors, Mr. Palmer and Mrs. Cochran. The Seniors came in second place, Sopho-mores third, and freshmen took last place in the lip sync competi-tion. To top all the great perform-ances and hard work, Mr. Hight and Mrs. Reichert secretly put together their own lip sync to, “Hit the Road Jack!”

Page by Erica Evers place with 36 points, followed by Juniors in second place with 31 points. Sophomores came in third place with 17 points, then in fourth place were the Freshmen with 16 points.

The theme of this years homecoming was “A Night at the Movies.” The candidates for queen were Casey White, Jillian Powell, Lauren Smith, and Aly-shia Daly. The candidates for king were Nick Robinson, Cory Bloodworth, Bruce West, and Tyler Leeds. Junior Attendants were Allison Bean, Bobby Hoff-man, Andrea Stepter, and Ted Craig. Sophomore attendants were, Drake Sanders, Kelsey Harper, Colten Krelo, and Cassie Martin. Freshmen attendants were, Trae Foster, Hannah McGinnis, Emily Horn, and Mar-cus Stram.

The Master and Mistress of ceremonies were Mr. Phillip Hos-feldt and Miss Kassie Jones.

Homecoming night started off with the Vienna Eagles basketball team, who kept the spirit going playing Egyptian with the win of 73 to 37.

Immediately following the ceremony was the homecoming dance in the old gym. The DJ for the dance was Chad Colson.

Student Council coordinated all of this years Homecoming ac-tivities. Mrs. Reichert and Mr. Hight are the Student Council sponsors.

During December, Beta Club participants donated their time to sell caramel apples as a fundraiser to help benefit the local Angel Tree Foundation.

The Angel Tree is an or-ganization that collects money to help those in need. The money they receive is invested into presents for children who have a parent or parents that are absent from their lives.

Lady Eagles are on the road to the Conference title By Allison Bean

The 2007-2008 basketball season has brought the Lady Eagles to Conference time.

The Lady Eagles started with a preseason trip to Robin-son, IL earlier this summer. There the ladies had the chance to compete against other girls’ high school teams, including Carterville. Returning home with some victories, and a few lessons learned, the team was excited about the upcoming basketball season.

With a surprising turnout of about 20 girls, Coach Ross Hill and Assistant Coach Beth Wid-owski were thrilled to have so many interested. “This many girls allows us to practice with five different teams. That is a great advantage,” said Coach Widowski.

The Lady Eagles played at the annual Marion Tournament for the second year in a row. Winning the first game against Eldorado, the ladies had four tough losses over the following nights of the tournament.

Continuing on with a few struggles during the season with an 8-8 record, the Lady Eagles finally pulled through on January 7. The girls de-

feated the Cobden Appleknock-ers 62-58, after coming from behind a 15 point deficit.

The Lady Eagles faced the rivaled Goreville Blackcats on January 10. After a halftime deficit of 30-16, the Lady Ea-gles bounced back to win the game. With all starting five players in foul trouble, the la-dies played a great defensive game holding the Lady Black-

cats to nine points in the fourth quarter. This resulted in a vic-tory for Vienna 51-50.

Beating Goreville and Cob-den gives the Lady Eagles a fair chance to take the Conference champs title. The ladies have to beat Joppa and Shawnee in order to take the title.

On January 14, the Lady Eagles defeated Century. Sen-ior Aerial Woolverton,

Club, coordinated with the caramel apple sales. Kelsey said, “The Angel Tree is such a great cause. I felt very privileged to be able to donate the money that we made to those who really deserve it. Thanks to all who helped.”

Through selling the cara-mel apples, and from dona-tions, the Beta Club raised over $600 to donate to Angel Tree.

Vienna Eagles win Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament By Sean Lasley

The Vienna Eagles planned to go to the Sesser-Valier Holi-day Tournament and bring back their second consecutive tour-nament championship. They also wanted to make a state-ment to anybody who watched their games, and they success-fully completed both of their goals.

The Eagles opened up the tournament with a first round game against the Elverado Fal-cons. The Eagles steamrolled the Falcons by a score of 85-15. The victory sent the Eagles to the quarterfinals and put their regular season record at 6-3.

They continued the success in the tournament with a win over the Sparta Bulldogs. The

61-46 win over the Bulldogs put the Eagles into the semifi-nals and their regular season record went to 7-3.

Their semifinal match-up was with the Meteors of Ma-rissa-Coulterville. The Eagles outlasted the Meteors in a very competitive match-up. The game was close throughout as the Eagles won by the final score of 51-41. This win sent the Eagles to the championship game and stretched their overall record to 8-3.

In the championship game they met the host team of the tournament, the Sesser-Valier Red Devils. This game was expected to be an exciting one and it did not disappoint.

Three Eagles were chosen to the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament All-

The championship game was very competitive, without either team having much of an advantage. The Sesser-Valier Red Devils executed their slow down offense very well. De-spite how well they ran their offense, the Eagles sat back and made the Red Devils bring the action to them, and it worked.

The Eagles were very pa-tient on both ends of the floor and brought home the title as they out-lasted Sesser-Valier 52-42. The victory sent the Ea-gles to an overall record of 9-3 and the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tournament Championship!

The Eagles had three play-ers named to the All-Tournament Team. Seniors

Chris Nichols and Brett Thompson were named along with Junior Cory Belsher. These three players were cru-cial in all four of the Eagles victories.

Senior Chris Nichols said, “We’ve been viewed as a one dimensional team the last three years. Everyone thinks its all about Brett. So far this season we’ve proved the guys around him can play too. The team chemistry and the ability to have many players score played a big part in us winning the Sesser-Valier Holiday Tourna-ment and will allow us to be just as successful when it is time for the postseason to roll around.”

On Monday, December 17, Dr. Trover called a leadership team meeting to talk about all the major teen safety problems, when it comes to reckless driving, in communities across the nation, and to discuss what should be done about them.

She had each of the team members come up with all the reasons that they think causes teens to get into so many car crashes.

thought were main causes for these accidents. A few of the suspected causes were driving under the influence, speeding, distractions in the vehicle, racing other teens, hill hopping, drowsy driving, and texting or talking on the phone while driving.

Dr. Trover and the leadership team discussed how music, phones, food, and friends were some things that can be possible distractions to you while on the road. These

are all very good examples of how and why teens are involved in a lot of accidents.

They also discussed how to prevent some of these accidents like wearing a seat-belt, understanding all rules of the road, paying attention to all road signs, limiting the amount of distractions in the vehicle, driving more safely and carefully, and maintaining a reasonable speed limit. These are also all very good examples on how to decrease the amount

of teens involved in accidents. The Leadership team is

trying to get a grant so that they can hold a Student Driver Safety Day. If they get this grant and are able to have this day then they are deciding between a few different ideas. Those ideas include having someone coming to speak to the students, having activities, or having a fake wreck out on the front lawn and having students participate in it.

While attending college, Sean plans on studying pre-law, architecture, or business man-agement. As for life after col-lege, he says he will either start his own law firm, architecture firm, or try to start up his own

Two VHS students receive scholarships to local universities By Randy Sims

presidential academic and soft-ball scholarship from McKen-dree University located in Lebanon, Illinois.

While attending McKen-dree, Casey would like to study elementary education. After college Casey would like to be a kindergarten teacher. While working, she plans to take classes towards her master’s degree, then get married and start a family of her own.

On January 13, four stu-dents from Vienna High School got the opportunity to perform at the Fox theatre in St Louis, Missouri, with Disney’s High School Musical cast.

Among these students were Kassie Jones, Lauren Windings, Kirsten Trambley, and Paige Langston. On Wednesday night, they went to watch and enjoy the show from the audi-ence perspective. Kassie Jones stated, “It is an amazing oppor-tunity to get to just see a Broad-way show, better yet to be in one as a teenager.”

Grade School students. Last spring Vienna Grade

School performed High School Musical. These four VHS stu-dents were all a part of the pro-duction. By purchasing the rights to the show, Vienna Grade School received an offer to send twelve students to par-ticipate in this experience.

In the grade school produc-tion Kassie Jones was the Vocal Coach, Lauren Windings, the choreographer , Paige Langston was Mrs. Darbus, and Kirsten Trambley was Taylor McKes-sie. These students are very excited to be given the opportu-nity beyond Southern Illinois.

FCCLA hosts annual banquet By Makenzie Kirby

Ms. McGinnis and the FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) hosted a banquet on Friday, December 14th. The event took place in the commons. It included the installation of officers, an electronic presentation, and a pot luck dinner.

The banquet started with a welcome and the awarding of door prizes. Jazmine Henry blessed the food, and then dinner was served.

After dinner, there was an introduction of the FCCLA sponsors, followed by a presentation presented by Kaylind Ball. The presentation included all the officers of FCCLA and pictures of the group’s community service.

The installation of the officers was next on the agenda. These officers include Tara Garrett, Erica Evers, Tori Bundren, Hannah Grathler, Brittany Warfield, Christa Evers, Cierra Russell, Sami Clayton, Kaylind Ball, Anna Allen, Jazmine Henry, Carolyn Story, and Dashia Wathen.

Next was a candle lighting ceremony for the “Purposes of FCCLA”. Playing fun games and winning more door prizes ended the evening.

donated door prizes for the occasion. Melissa Murphy made a beautiful FCCLA cake for the banquet. Ms. McGinnis, FCCLA sponsor, felt good about the evening and stated, “I thought we had a good turn out for the banquet and the cake that was made was a beautiful FCCLA cake.”

VHS Senior Travis Crain is taking part in Vienna High School’s first effort in wrestling.

Vienna has entered Travis as an individ-ual participant for the IHSA wrestling sea-son. Travis had his first meet on Saturday, December 15th, in Anna. He has been training rigorously on his own in prepara-tion for the match.

Travis won 3 out of the 4 matches at the Anna meet for a great first showing. The Anna coaches had been willing to help him as he trained for the event.

He entered the wrestling matches in the 145 lbs weight class. The people he faced had the advantage of coaching and had also trained longer.

Travis has gained knowledge from his first match and realizes he needs to work on VHS’s first time wrestler, senior Travis Crain.

his endurance. He has competed exception-ally well for his level of experience. This was Travis’s first and only match so far. Travis spoke highly of his experience in the match. “It was a good experience and something I had never done before. Win-ning 3 out of 4 matches was good and I’m stoked.”

Travis has been interested in wresting and has urged the school since his freshman year to consider a wrestling team.

He also participates on the track team and martial arts, which has helped him tre-mendously in training.

Travis and Mr. Hill are currently sched-uling future matches for Travis. VHS hopes to see many more wins in his future and more athletes going out for the new sport.

If you could have one wish, what would it be? To have an all-expense paid trip to Italy. Where do you think you’ll be in 10 years? Livin’ in a van down by the river!

What was your favorite part about Homecoming week this year? Killing at Tug-of-War. Do you have any big plans for the summer? Hang out and work. If you could have one wish, what would it be? A bunch more wishes. What’s your favorite high school memory? It’s all been good. Where do you think you’ll be in 10 years? Hopefully a therapist in a hospi-tal.

What was your favorite part about Homecoming week this year? How the seniors won... and didn’t cheat. Do you have any big plans for the summer? Just plan-ning on going on a cruise . If you could have one wish, what would it be? I would wish that people wouldn’t judge others on their appearance or rumors. What’s your favorite high school memory? All memories that involve Becky or Koren. Where do you think you’ll be in 10 years? I’m not sure. Things change everyday day.

How to become a VHS Superfan! By Sean Lasley

Being a Vienna High School superfan is a tough gig. You have to know exactly what to do, say, and

wear at all times! These skills become especially useful at ballgames. If you ever wondered what it takes

to become a VHS superfan this is the list for you! If you follow these easy steps, you will become a VHS

superfan in no time at all!

1. You have to be at every pep rally. A superfan never misses anything when it comes to cheering on their team!

2. You have to have enough orange and blue to wear a different outfit everyday. You should be able to come to school

decked out in orange and blue everyday without wearing something more than once.

3. You must participate in every activity of homecoming week. What kind of fan doesn’t want to compete? You have to

have the desire to be the best, just like our Eagles!

4. You have to be at all the games. I know some people say they have to work, or they cannot go to away games, but su-

perfans NEVER miss a game. If you are scheduled to work, CALL IN SICK!!! If its an away game, no matter how far

away, you must go! Whether you have to borrow money from mom and dad to put gas in your, or your friends car, this

is a must. You have to be at every game, and there is no exceptions for a superfan!

5. Once you have made it to every game, you must be completely decked out in orange and blue. Just wearing an orange

or blue shirt and jeans will not cut it. A superfan must have an orange and blue shirt, pants, socks, hair, and face paint.

You must also pick your favorite player and have their number painted on your face as well!!

6. Now you’re getting there, but just being at the games isn't enough. You must know the cheers! “Naughty Naughty,” “Hey You,” “Ice Cream Sundae,” “Which Way,” “Defense,” “Offense,” “Eagles,” and the rest of them. You must learn them ALL!! A true superfan never misses a cheer!

7. You’re almost there, one of the final steps to becoming a VHS superfan is to rush the court after every win and hug the players. You must also sit in the gym and wait on the team to come out of the locker room. Only a true fan does this!

8. And finally, if there are people still questioning your superfanness, then desperate times call for desperate measures!

You must get a Vienna Eagles tattoo. Whether it be a basketball with VHS on it to your favorite players face and num-

After five albums, the coun-try music star Brad Paisley was crowned with the Album of the Year Awardby the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music.

Although it seems like the album’s name would have no meaning to it, 5th Gear was given the name because this is Brad’s studio album.

The album consists of a mixture of songs. It goes from All I Wanted was a Car, to Let-

ter to Me. They both talk about the things he went through as a teenager.

His music is a perfect ex-ample of the life of a teenager, the life we are living today.

As a huge fan of Rascal Flatts’ previous albums, it was very exciting to hear that they were releasing a new album in the late fall of 2007. Most of the population of high school students prefer to listen to pop, rap and punk. However, Ras-cal Flatts’ has a huge combina-tion of music to choose from.

The two standout songs on Rascal Flatts’ new album are Still Feels Good and Winner at

a Losing Game. Both songs

made huge hits in the country music world.

Rascal Flatts’ plans on con-tinuing a great musical per-formance for country music lovers.
