Welcome On behalf of the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, I’d like to welcome you to a place I am fortunate to call home. Located along the shores of the Choctawhatchee Bay, only a short drive from beautiful white sand beaches and emerald waters, the Niceville Valparaiso area is a wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family. Proudly, we are the home of Eglin Air Force Base (established 1935) where you’ll find the 96th Test Wing, Intrepid Spirit Program, 53rd Wing, and 33rd Fighter Wing. Nearby is also Hurlburt Field, Duke Field, Army 7th Special Forces, Army Ranger School, and the Navy EOD School. Our community is a Great American Defense Community due to our dedicated support to our military bases, active duty personnel, family members, and our veterans. Our public and private schools are the best in the state, meeting the needs of all students. We also have Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, home of the Raiders, a fully accredited four-year college offering multiple degrees for higher education. The college is also home to the Mattie Kelly Arts Center, which hosts cultural events throughout the year, including Broadway productions, concerts, and symphony performances. There is plenty to do in the Niceville-Valparaiso community, offering residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy waterfront dining, fishing, boating, swimming, and other outdoor activities. Take time to relax and enjoy our area and explore the rich history. Our climate allows for year round sports for the entire family. We offer a wide variety of restaurants, hotels, and shopping opportunities. Visitors will find all the information you need to make your stay in our area enjoyable within this publication. OurHistory As early settlers discovered our beautiful area, they wrote home about this paradise community with its pleasant atmosphere, nice people, and natural beauty. These communications, and some innovative marketing, attracted others to seek a fresh start here. In 1868, mail service was established in Boggy Bayou. In 1910, community leaders changed the name of the east Boggy area to Niceville in an effort to better reflect the area and appeal to investors and visitors. Niceville was petitioned for establishment in 1938 and officially incorporated by the state in 1939. The west side of Boggy would later become Valparaiso, a Spanish word meaning Vale of Paradise, and was incorporated as a city in 1921. Before roads and bridges, the area was only accessible by waterways; therefore, commerce and homesteads popped up along the shoreline. The lumber and turpentine industries grew steadily from the 1850’s to the 1930’s. The Nathey Gristmill was located where the Eglin Golf Course is today and the Bay Lumber Sawmill was located at the Mullet Festival Site. Farming, fishing, and shipbuilding were also prominent industries in the early years.

Eglin Air Force Base is an integral part of our areas history. In 1935, Valparaiso developer James E. Plew donated 1,460 acres to establish the Valparaiso Bombing and Gunnery Base, renamed in 1937 to Eglin Field. Choctawhatchee National Forest was created in 1908 and was the first national forest in the south, boasting 465,000 acres. In 1940, over 340,000 acres were transferred to the War Department as a training field; today’s Eglin Reservation. In 1934, historic downtown Niceville on Bayshore Drive was lost in a fire and new buildings were established on the north side of the street. The center of commerce moved again in 1961 with the four lane completion of John Sims Parkway. Visitors can still experience historic Valparaiso, including the Heritage Museum of Northwest Florida, on Westview Avenue, in its historic building. Our history is riddled with fascinating facts, controversy, and stories passed down through the generations. OUR MISSIONThe mission of the Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce is to promote positive business and community growth and improvement. The vision of the organization is for our community to be an outstanding place to live, work, raise a family, and conduct business.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIVISIONPositions the Chamber of Commerce as a forum used by the public, the military, businesses, and the cities for all joint projects and interests involving our area. Committees under this division include:

Education Committee* – Initiates and provides a partnership between the local business communities and the education institutions to enhance the quality of education at all levels.

Military Affairs Committee – Provides support of the military mission and enhancement of the relationship between the community and the military.

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT DIVISIONHighlights the value of Chamber membership to all businesses in the area and perpetuates the long-term success of the Chamber and its member businesses. Events and committees under this division including membership meetings, such as: Second Wednesday Breakfast, Let’s Do Lunch, and Business After Hours.

Ambassadors – Serve as official greeters at Chamber events, support and mentor new members, member recruitment and retention, assist and volunteer at ribbon cuttings and various Chamber functions.

Niceville Young Professionals* – NYP is a committee aimed at engaging an emerging group of leaders committed to personal growth and career advancement while participating in long lasting and impactful community service projects.

SPECIAL EVENTS DIVISIONPlans and hosts special events and fundraisers to further enhance our involvement in the community and raise funds for the Chamber. Events under this division include:

Awards Celebration – Annual event to recognize outgoing and incoming board members, volunteers, and businesses for their support of the Chamber and the community.

Chamber Golf Classic – Annual event designed to offer networking and promotional opportunities to members and their guests.

Civic Hall of Fame – Honors and recognizes citizens who have made lasting contributions to the betterment of the community. Nomination applications are available at NicevilleChamber.com.

Sequins & Suits – Annual event to raise funds for the Chamber and a featured charity, while highlighting local businesses in a festive atmosphere.

EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE | eglin.af.milA major employer in the area since 1935 and U.S. Air Force’s largest installation. Eglin’s host wing is the 96th Test Wing, with more than 19,000 military, civilian, and contractor personnel. The 96th is the test and evaluation center for Air Force air-delivered weapons, navigation, and guidance systems, Command and Control systems, and Air Force Special Operations Command systems. Team Eglin is home to many units and tenants. Some of the major units include:

6TH RANGER TRAINING BATTALION Auxiliary Field Six is the site of Camp James E. Rudder and the home of the Army’s 6th Ranger Training Battalion which conducts the final phase of the U.S. Army Ranger Course. The entire course is 61 days and is divided into three phases.

7TH SPECIAL FORCE GROUP The 7th Special Forces Group is one of five active Special Forces Groups providing specialized support to the combatant commanders. This unit organizes, equips, trains, validates, and prepares forces for deployment to conduct worldwide special operations.

20TH SPACE CONTROL SQUADRONThe mission of the 20th Space Control Squadron is to detect, track, identify, and report near Earth and deep space objects in Earth’s orbit, and provide space object identification data in support of United States Strategic Command’s space control mission.

33RD FIGHTER WING The 33rd Fighter Wing mission is to train world-class F-35 Lightning II pilots, maintainers, air battle managers and intelligence personnel. The 33rd Fighter Wing “Nomads,” a graduate flying and maintenance training wing for the F-35 Lightning II, is organized under 19th Air Force, Air Education and Training Command. It is a tenant unit on Eglin Air Force Base, an Air Force Materiel Command base.

53RD WING The 53rd Wing, serves as the focal point for the Combat Air Forces in electronic warfare, armament and avionics, chemical defense, reconnaissance and aircrew training devices. The wing is responsible for operational testing and evaluation of new equipment and systems proposed for use by these forces.
