• In 1909 a conservative revolt broke out Nicaragua against the dictator-president Jose Santos Zelaya

• Because of his hostile behavior and interference in other Central American nation the U.S. opposed him

• On December 16, 1909 Zelaya was forced to resign

• Nicaragua was in state of near anarchy, but in May 1911 conservative Adolfo Diaz became president

• A tradition in Nicaragua• On December 7 at 6 pm you hear churches and

cathedrals saying “Who causes so much happiness?.” The response most people say is “The conception of Mary”

• In the towns and cities many people start exploding fireworks and fire crackers

• La Griteria is a celebration to thank the virgin Mary of the miracles she has performed

• Faithful people decorate altars in their house where it can be seen

• Born in the village of Niquinohomo, Nicaragua on May 18, 1895• He was a farmer and a mining engineer and joined the liberal

revolution• He led the rebellion against presence of U.S. military forces in the

country• He was a hero to the Latin Americans and a bandit to the U.S.• On February 20, 1934 Augusto Cesar Sandino was seized and

executed• It was because of what he did that the Nicaraguan revolutionary

group, the Sandistas, obtain their name
