North Haven Yacht Club News and Views Through 2016 September Edition NHYC Bembridge Rally Aug 2016 Dear members, Once again the Bembridge Rally proved to be the most interesting of the rally program. It always has its moments, and this one was no exception. The boats taking part were:- “Admiral Thomas” “Stitches” “Solange” “Pickwick” and “Karenzi”. “Water Venture” was supposed to come but was a no-show. We set off from the moorings at 09.30 on Sat 27 th , and motored out to the end of East Looe where we found a reasonable NE wind to carry us along quite nicely towards Hurst Point. By the time we reached Hurst the wind had come round to the east making sailing a bit more of a challenge, and round about Cowes it was decided to push on under power so as to reach Bembridge in time for the evening meal. After an enjoyable cruise through the Solent we arrived at 17.00 to a packed harbour with boats being turned away. No problem for us as we were booked in, although shoe-horning five boats into a small space on the pontoon was interesting, well done to Gordon and his marina staff. We then took the water taxi, which resembles a small landing craft, to The Pilot Boat Inn, and landed D-Day style on the beach adjacent to the pub, we weren’t carrying guns and nobody was firing at us so we carried on to the pub. The meal was very good and at 21.00 a band started to play, although they were not too bad, the volume was a bit much and we decide to return to the boats. This meant practicing our night assault skills with the landing craft, good job Barry had remembered a torch, the sign of a good Commodore! Continued on Page 3

The next morning we awoke to some indifferent weather with a strong South Westerly wind.Setting off about 09.00 we had a good sail to Osborne Bay where we turned into the wind andstarted the engines. After motoring for an hour or so we had a message over the radiothat “Stitches” engine had stopped, and he was in need of a tow, “Admiral Thomas”obliged and towed “Stitches” towards Cowes. Meanwhile Barry and Richard in “Solange”were making their way towards them to help out. On arrival Barry boarded “Stitches”and found a broken fuel line, fixed it, and got the engine going, and they allproceeded on their way to Yarmouth. Very well done to all on “Solange” and“Admiral Thomas” for a successful outcome to a potentially dodgy situation. The wind by this time had freshened to a force 6 and the sea was very lumpy.“Karenzi” was first into Yarmouth followed by “Pickwick” “Solange” and“Admiral Thomas”. “Stitches” arrived last having flogged againstthe tide making it a very long and fraught day for Paddy andcrew. We staggered off to the pub for a meal, which was verynice, and then afters were had aboard “Karenzi”.The next morning we all set off for Poole in sunny weatherwith no wind to speak of, and motored gently homearriving back onto moorings in dribs anddrabs. The only excitement was a highengine temperature warning buzzergoing off on “Karenzi” onentering the harbour, just as the ferry wasapproaching. Some niftywork by Chris, mycrew, opening the enginecover and the fore hatch, saved the day. All in alleveryone seemed to enjoy theRally and all it threw at us, and we are looking forward to the next one.Peter.

What was thechap on thecruiser doing, directing traffic orabout to abandonship?

More news from Barry. The new touch screen computer (kiosk), has beenactivated, it is still in it’s infancy and currently beingtested. This piece of technology relies on internet access, and because of the relatively slow speed at the club is notable to perform as required. We are in the process ofupdating the club Wi Fi, but due to a shortage ofequipment at BT we are on a waiting list………..If you have an item for sale, or require an item, we willshortly be able to load the advert onto the kiosk computer, watch for furtherdetails….Please look out for some exciting social events planned for the coming months, theBig Breakfasts are starting in October, (that has come round quickly!).The usual way to book for social events is to fill in an envelope from the notice board, and posting through the office door, everyone is welcome.
