NHS Planning Guide

Important Information, Policies, and Procedures

Scheduling and Scheduling ChangesNHS counselors will meet individually in January-February with each student to review course selections for the upcoming school year. Once this meeting has occurred, students may request schedule changes by utilizing the Schedule Change Request Form. Students may request changes until June 1. After this period, changes must be approved by the Directors of School Counseling and/or NHS Administration. Because of this, students and parents should check their tentative schedule carefully to make sure all classes for the student's selected diploma are scheduled. 

The NHS master schedule is built based on student course requests to best meet the needs of all of our students. An important life skill is making informed, mindful decisions and then accepting the resulting responsibilities and consequences. This applies to the scheduling process. When students select their courses, both semester and year-long, they are committing to remain in these courses throughout the school year. Because of this, students and parents should carefully consider all of their course options.

Auditing CoursesStudents who have failed a course or earned a grade of “D+“ or lower may retake the course to better master its content or to meet minimum grade requirements for an Academic or Technical Honors Diploma.

• Only audits of the same course are allowed; a similar course of a lower level of difficulty (i.e. unweighted grade) may not be considered an audit of a more difficult course.

• Students who plan to retake the second semester of a year-long course may also retake the first semester of that course.

• Only the new grade will appear on the student’s transcript and be factored into the student’s grade point average. The original course grade will be replaced with the letter “R” (retaken), and all grade data will be removed.

• No additional credit is earned when a student audits a course.

• Audits under any other circumstances must be approved by the principal or designee.  Requests to audit or retake a course may be denied by the principal/designee if sections are overfilled.

Weighted GradesNoblesville High School currently has tiered system for weighting grades.  Weighted courses will receive a weight of 1.0 point, 0.75 points, or 0.5 points as indicated in the attached List of Weighted Courses.

Receiving High School Credit for Middle School World Language and Math

Alternative Physical Education Credit

Middle school students may elect to receive credit for high school world language and math courses taken prior to the freshman year. Students and parents should carefully read guidelines and requirements when making this informed decision.

Students electing to receive high school credit should complete the corresponding “Letter of Understanding” electronically. Students may choose to accept credit in one or both areas.

Math forms must be submitted by the first day of school following the 8th grade year.

World Language forms must be submitted by March 1st of the sophomore year in order to receive high school credit.

The Indiana State Board of Education has granted local school districts the flexibility of awarding students Physical Education credit that demonstrate proficiency through alternative means.  Students who demonstrate mastery of the Indiana Academic Standards for PE, as documented by a coach, sponsor, or director, may be eligible for alternative PE credit.

NHS students may earn an Alternative Physical Education Credit Contract for the following NHS sports and activities:

Students in the classes of 2021-2023 will be awarded Alternative PE credit upon completion of their approved NHS athletic or performing art activity. The coach or sponsor of each activity is responsible for submitting a roster of students who successfully participate in the full season of their activity.

Beginning with the class of 2024, students will only be able to earn one alternative PE credit. PE I must be taken at NHS during the school year or in summer school. Additional information can be found here.

The completion of Core 40 is an Indiana graduation requirement. Indiana’s Core 40 curriculum provides the academic foundation all students need to succeed in college and the workforce.

To graduate with less than Core 40, the following formal opt-out process must be completed: • The student, the student’s parent/guardian, and the student’s counselor (or another staff member who assists students in

course selection) must meet to discuss the student’s progress.• The student’s Graduation Plan (including four year course plan) is reviewed.• The student’s parent/guardian determines whether the student will achieve greater educational benefits by completing the

general curriculum or the Core 40 curriculum.• If the decision is made to opt-out of Core 40, the student is required to complete the course and credit requirements for a

general diploma and the career/academic sequence the student will pursue is determined.

Entering Courses Requests in Power School

1. Complete 2020-21 Scheduling Form in your Canvas Scheduling Course.

2. Go to your Power School account.

3. Click on the class registration icon (left hand side of the screen).

4. Use the pencil icon on the right-hand side to select courses.

5. Make sure you have 7 classes EACH semester. (Unless participating in special programs)

6. Match courses/course number from your course request worksheet in the pull-down menu for each subject area.

7. Click the submit button often to save your course requests (bottom right-hand corner of screen).

8. Courses should appear in a list.

14 courses for most students• JEL - 10 courses• ABC - 14 courses• Internship - 12 courses• Cadet Teaching - 12 courses

9. Bring the following to your scheduling meeting:

Need Assistance?

NHS counselors will meet individually with all 9-11th grade students during January and February to answer questions and double-check course requests for the upcoming school year.

Additional sessions will be held to assist incoming 8th grade students and parents.

Flex Scheduling Options7

Flex 12

We encourage students who are planning on pursuing a post-secondary education to take courses that will prepare them for the rigors of a college schedule.  To help seniors prepare for the next stage of their lives, we are providing those students who take a rigorous course load the option of having a flex schedule (Flex 12).  To qualify, students must meet the following requirements:

• Student must be on track to graduate on time with a Core 40 or Honors diploma and have 40 credits at the completion of grade 11.

• Student must take four or more in-house Noblesville High School flex qualified courses.  Qualified courses = AP courses, Dual-Credit courses, PLTW Capstone Courses, PLTW Dual Credit Courses, NHS Internship Program (only counts as one course regardless of the number of credits earned).

• Student must maintain academic proficiency in the qualified courses.  Failure to maintain a C or higher on semester grade-checks in all courses will result in the loss of Flex 12.

• Student must follow all school policies and procedures, including timely completion of the required College and Career Readiness activities, or risk forfeit of this privilege.  (See below)

• Student must be enrolled in random drug testing.

• Student must be in and remain in good standing.

• Parents must sign an agreement allowing the student on a flex schedule to leave school grounds. 

A student who takes four qualifying courses can choose to take no additional courses or can choose to take 1-3 additional courses.

Junior Flex AL

Goals and Purpose: We encourage students who are on a college or university track to take a rigorous schedule of courses during their junior year. All current research indicates that a student who does so is more successful at the college and university level. We also encourage students to prepare themselves beyond the academic challenges coming in their post-secondary school lives. One of the greatest of these challenges is handling new freedoms and choices open to them after graduation.

Juniors who take a rigorous schedule—equivalent to a half-semester of college credit—will be given the option of flex scheduling their academic lab. During the flex academic lab, juniors will make choices about the use of discretionary time, but they will be required to maintain academic proficiency, follow established procedures, and manage their flex time well.

During flex academic lab qualifying juniors are permitted to stay and get academic help from teachers or participate in club activities. Once students finish working with a teacher or a club meeting they may leave campus or check into the Media Center for supervised free time. Students who do not need to stay for a club meeting, to get academic help, or wish to go to the media center must leave campus during flex 11 AL. Students must check out according to the established procedures.

To Qualify for Junior Flex Academic Lab:

• Student must be on track to graduate, with 26 credits by the end of grade 10, and be pursuing a Core 40, AHD, or THD diploma.

• Must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher at the end of the 10th grade year.

• Students must take two or more in-house Noblesville High School flex qualified courses. Qualified Courses = AP courses, Dual-Credit courses, PLTW Capstone Courses, and/or PLTW Dual Credit Courses.

College and Career Readiness Requirements

• Students will be required to submit proof of participating in two (2) of the following activities per semester:

• College and university representative presentations

• College and university visits to campus

• “Colleges I am Thinking About” module in Naviance

• Resume placed in Naviance

• CCR workshops for college readiness (Financial Aid Night, College Night, N.I.C.E. Fair)

• SAT/prep program on Kahn Academy

• Taking SAT or ACT

Scheduling:

• Juniors interested in a Flex 11 AL should fill out the Intent to Apply form. Please discuss any questions with your guidance counselor.

• The Noblesville High School master schedule has been developed to accommodate the needs of all students at NHS. Guidance counselors will not change schedules of individual juniors in order to qualify for a flex schedule. For example, counselors will NOT move a class from first semester to second semester in order to create the flex option

The Junior Flex AL is not required, nor is it a right. Students should work carefully with parents and their guidance counselors to determine if this schedule is in their best interest. School officials may revoke this privilege at any time if the student does not follow school policies or if the student is unable to handle the discretionary time or academic load.
