North Haven is one step closer to a renovated mid-dle school after town mem-bers voted unanimously to approve $199,250 in pre-ref-erendum design costs at a special town meeting Tues-day night.

The voice vote occurred quickly after the meeting started with comments from Gary Johns, chairman of the Middle School Build-ing Committee. The com-mittee planned the project that is being designed by Perkins Eastman, an archi-tectural firm that displayed schematic drawings of the design for the project. The plan is to renovate a portion of the school and construct a new two story classroom wing.

Gary Amato was the only town member to speak out in opposition of the reno-vation project, arguing it is too expensive and the town

could spend less to repair the roof. But he left before the vote took place, and there we no votes in oppo-sition to the pre-referen-dum funding.

Amato also said he will vote against the middle school at the June 17 refer-endum, when the town will be asked to approve a proj-ect that will cost about $64 million, according to Per-kins Eastman estimates. Workers put the finishing touches on a new playscape at Canna Park on May 2, com-pleting a renovation which started last year. The effort has transformed the park into a sports and recreation center for the neighborhood.

Two tennis courts and a basketball court were previ-ously refurbished. “They fin-ished up the playscape, which was the last piece of the puz-zle,” said Lynn Sadosky, di-rector of Public Works. “We took out the stakes and cau-tion tape so it’s all set and kids were playing on it this weekend.”

First Selectman Mike Freda has said the reason North Ha-ven can increase spending on the 2014-2015 budget, while not raising taxes, is due to the town’s increase in topline revenue.

That message rang clear with his announcement May 1 that C. Cowles & Company, a metal stamping company that manufactures parts for U.S. and Japanese automobiles, will move into the old Mar-lin Firearms plant on Kenna Drive later this year.

“Bringing manufacturing here will serve us well and it produces profitable tax dol-lars and jobs,” Freda said.

C. Cowles will centralize its operation in North Haven, beginning in July when it con-solidates its Massachusetts division here before trans-ferring its New Haven head-quarters later this year and next year.

Lawrence Moon, president of C. Cowles, said, “We’ll start the transition from Massa-chusetts to North Haven, which will take three months. Then we’ll move the division from New Haven into the facility.”

He said some employees from the East Longmeadow, Mass. facility will relocate to North Haven and all of the New Haven employees will. “But not everyone from Mas-sachusetts will be coming

down so we’ll be adding 60 jobs and we’re already hiring people,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to working with the town of North Haven, bringing jobs into town and using the facil-ity,” Moon said.

Moon said the large space in North Haven will be ideal for his business.

“The facility in Massa-chusetts wasn’t suited for the operation and the lease was expiring. We’ll put the businesses together and get everything into a single operation.”

the new sports facilities and playscape, refurbishments included the replacement of existing fencing, repair and installing new picnic tables and sanitation containers.

“The project benefits those in the neighborhood as well as those who play in area ten-nis and basketball leagues,” said First Selectman Mike Freda. “The project greatly benefits the community and we are very proud to be re-

cipients of this important grant source.”

Sadosky said the town has also received money from the state Capital Improve-ment Plan to pay for a bike path that will be constructed at the Grover Wyman Park. The path will be built in honor of Conner Kusmit, the North Haven youth who died in a bike accident on Aug. 29, 2012.

The town will take bids on the bike path construction beginning on May 19, she said.

square foot site on 23 acres in 1968. It employed 265 people in 2010 when the closure was announced.

After the Marlins plant closed, Freda said, “Con-necticut is a difficult state for any manufacturer to sus-tain its business model.” C. Cowles relocation to North Haven “is a wonderful thing when a Massachusetts com-pany comes to North Ha-ven and our state is losing manufacturing.”

The relocation of C. Cowles to North Haven is one of a va-riety of new economic devel-opments in town.

At the May 1 selectmen’s meeting, Freda also noted a Comcast service center will open at Best Buy Plaza and an ASAP urgent care center will open on Washington Avenue.

Fresh Air volunteers are needed to host children from New York City for two weeks during the summer.

Over 4,000 children, from 6 to 12-years-old, stay with host families across 13 states.

Volunteers range from fam-ilies with young children to grandparents.

For more information, con-tact Jennifer Carroll-Fischer at (203) 910-0573 or visit www.freshair.org.

Curbside voting is available at the town referenda and general elections, according the North Haven Registrars of Voters.

Curbside voting is for citi-zens who are able to be pres-ent at the polling place, but unable to gain access due to a temporary physical incapac-ity. A ballot will be brought to the car or “curbside.” No proof of any incapacity need be shown to utilize curbside voting.

Drive up to the handicap parking spaces outside the voting district. Once curb-

side voting is requested, both assistant registrars (election officials of opposing parties) will come out, examine your identification, return to the polling place and mark your name as “voting.” They will then bring a ballot, marking pen and privacy folder. The assistant registrars will cast the ballot into the tabulator.

To request curbside voting, call the registrars of voters office on the day of the elec-tion at (203) 239-5321, ext. 640 and request curbside voting. Identification at the polling place is required.

Sign up for Relay for Life, volunteers needed

On June 28 and 29, hun-dreds of residents of North Haven and Hamden will gather on the Hamden High School track for the Ameri-can Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

The annual event that raises millions of dollars for cancer research through-out the U.S. and around the world.

The event starts Saturday morning, June 28, and con-

tinues overnight into Sunday, June 29.

“We run the track for 24 hours, cancer doesn’t sleep so why should we?” said Dave Ryan, Relay for Life special-ist at the American Cancer Society.

Teams of eight to 15 partic-ipants will walk around the track.

“It’s not a race, so not all participants are on the track at the same time, it’s like a re-lay,” Ryan said.

The event begins at 10 a.m. on June 28 with a survivor’s lap at 10:05 a.m. “Last year

there were 69 survivors at the event and we held a sur-vivor’s luncheon after the opening ceremony,” he said. A caregivers lap follows.

“We’re unique in that we do overnights,” Ryan said. “There are 5,200 relay events in the U.S. and in 22 countries.”

Last year, 411 individuals participated in the North Haven/Hamden event and $94,000 was raised.

Almost four million people participated in relay events in the U.S. last year, one percent of the nation’s residents.

Relay for Life began in 1985 in Tacoma, WA when a doctor circled a track fro 24 hours at the University of Puget Sound and raised $27,000 to fight cancer.

This year will be the 13th for the North Haven Hamden Relay for Life event.

Volunteers and relay teams are needed for this year’s Re-lay for Life event.

Sign up to participate at www.relayforlife.org/hamdennorthhavenct.

Small Kitchen Big Taste, which goes by the nickname SKBT, is a prepared foods and catering company that spe-cializes in fresh, whole real foods from tempting entrees to delicious desserts.

The store on Sackett Point Road opened in October and “retail traffic has been build-ing by word of mouth,” said Karen Lenahan, a New Ha-ven resident who started the business.

“It’s a good location with nice traffic and right off the highway. It’s a space I can do a lot in,” she said.

Lenahan and Sarah Fitz-maurice, a professional chef, prepare the foods, which can be bought at the store or or-dered for delivery at the store’s website, smallkitch-en-bigtaste.com.

New menus are posted daily.

“We have different stuff on the menu and make every-thing here, it’s all fresh,” she said. “We have hormone free, grass-fed meats, seasonal fruits and vegetables and Connecticut eggs and milk. It’s gluten-free, paleo-friendly

foods.”The store is open Monday

through Thursday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Catering is available on the weekends.

A recent visit to the store encountered Lenahan with her seven-week-old daughter Emilia, who Lenahan joked is an eager new employee.

While Mother’s Day is filled with sentiment and warm-fuzzy thoughts — as well it should be — there’s another side of motherhood to ex-plore. There are lots of moms who appreciate how much a sense of humor can help when it comes to the world’s toughest job. We’ve gathered a few famous quotes on the topic from a range of observ-ers. Share a laugh with your mother this Mother’s Day and see which of these funny quotes rings true for her expe-rience. — The editors

“I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them.” - Phyllis Diller

“The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the fam-ily nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.” - Calvin Trillin

“A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five peo-ple, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” - Ten-neva Jordan

“My mother’s menu con-sisted of two choices: Take it or leave it.” - Buddy Hackett

“If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” - Milton Berle

“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of ad-vice?’ it is a mere formality. It doesn’t matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” - Erma Bombeck

Commentary

At 90, memories remain vivid of wartime Poland

In March, my mother marked her 90th birthday. It was a small celebration, in keeping with her “don’t make a fuss” attitude. Now, at a time when people are living longer, marking nine decades of life is not un-usual. But I mention my mother’s achievement be-cause, for her, some of those years were quite unusual, to say the least.

She grew up in Poland during the Second World War. For her, life under the Nazi occupation was some-thing she and her family had to deal with everyday. And then, later, the Soviets pushed in on the eastern side and that posed its own hardships.

My mother’s memories are similar to what many ci-vilians had to endure during that terrible time. I had heard her stories often while growing up, but lately, I’ve been writing them down to preserve them and share them with my family and friends.

My mother was born in Adams, Mass. to parents who were immigrants from Poland. She was the fourth of seven children. When she was one and a half years old, her father, my grandfather, got word from his mother that his older brother had died. That meant that he had to pack up the family and go back to Poland to take care of the farm in the village of Frysztak.

And so, while my mother was born in America, she is culturally Polish; she was

born an American citizen but she was raised and edu-cated in Poland. So were her brothers and sisters.

Life on the farm was quiet, but that all changed in 1939 when the second World War broke out with an invasion of Poland. My mother was 15-years-old at the time. It was practically impossible to be anywhere in Poland and

not be af-fected by the fighting. My mother’s vil-lage was of-ten caught in the crossfire.

One day her father, my grandfa-ther, no-ticed that a

hay wagon on the farm was missing and so he went to look for it. Nazi soldiers suspected him of being a spy and they took him in for in-terrogation. For three weeks no one knew where he was until he was released.

At another time, young men from the village were rounded up against their will and they were taken to a labor camp. Mom’s oldest brother, my uncle Julian, was forced to work as part of a road construction crew in Bavaria. His family didn’t know if he was dead or alive for three years until he came home.

My mother’s village had a large Jewish population. She had many Jewish classmates before the war, but after the war only one was left. She told me of a day when, as she walked to the post office, she saw soldiers execute a Jewish man across the street.

On her way back home, she saw two more Jewish men being killed; one was the town baker.

One day, Nazi soldiers on the way to the eastern front stole livestock on the farm and set fire to what my mom called the “old house.” Ri-fles were pointed at her and her family to prevent them from putting out the blaze. Later, when the soldiers left, they scurried to put out the fire so it wouldn’t spread to the “new house” next door.

When Soviet soldiers advanced west, they occu-pied the “new house” for a time, while my mom and her family took refuge in a root cellar. Her mother, my grandmother, caught pneu-monia from the damp condi-tions and never recovered.

After the war, there was little left for them in Poland and so, over the course of several years, they went back to America. As Ameri-can citizens, my mother and her siblings had easy entry, but my grandfather’s return was not so smooth. It took the efforts of a senator and congressman from Massa-chusetts to cut through the red tape.

About a year after she arrived, my mom met my father and she settled into a quiet life and raised three children, including me. She was determined to learn English. Even today, when she’s reading a newspaper or book, there’s always an English- Polish dictionary at her side.

For a long time I wasn’t sure if she wanted to go back to Poland. Finally, in 1994 I asked her and when she

agreed I went with her. I took five hours of video.

Now, of course, my moth-er’s life wasn’t all gloom and doom. She, along with my aunts and uncles made the most of life, and family gatherings were always filled with laughter.

But six of my mother’s 90 years were spent during the war. They were the defin-ing years of her life. And, of course, she wasn’t alone. Stories like hers could be told by thousands and even millions of people who lived through those same terrible times. But, for all of that, my mom doesn’t speak of those years with bitterness. What got her through was the strong support of her family and the even stronger faith in God they all shared.

It was faith in God’s in-credible love that gave my mother, and people like her, hope, incredible hope in the face of incredible trials. During the hardship of the second World War, it was the faith of my mother, and people like her, that helped them to hear God’s voice of comfort and strength — strength that gave them pa-tience and resilience. God provided for my mother ev-ery day of her 90 years. He provides for her now as she enjoys the care she receives in an assisted living facil-ity. And it is with her kind of faith that I can hope and pray that God will continue to provide for her, and peo-ple like her, all the days of their lives.

SportsAnthony Longley throws out first pitch on opening day

First Selectman Mike Freda usually throws out the first pitch to open the Max Sino-way Baseball League season, but this year the honor went to Anthony Longley, a 7-year-old Clintonville Elementary School student who is fight-ing a severe brain tumor.

Chip Meyers, president of the baseball league, said An-thony will play for a team this season and wishes him the best.

“We’re looking forward to a great season,” he said.

Meyers welcomed play-ers and their families to the opening day event, which took place May 4 at Mon-towese Park, where games are played on fields that have been manicured by the Public Works Department.

It is the 63rd year of league games and the 75th anniver-sary of Little League Inter-national baseball, founded in Williamsport, Penn in 1939.

Meyers said 410 North Ha-ven boys and girls, ages 4 to 12, are playing this year on 34 teams in four divisions.

Freda, the other selectmen and state Rep. Dave Yacca-rino attended opening day festivities.

Freda said, “Youth sports develops camaraderie, team-work and discipline and helps connect the community.”

Yacarrino told the players to “have a great season and make a lot of friends.”

Opening day was held May 4 after being canceled by in-clement weather April 26. It was a cool, windy day but sunny, typical spring baseball weather for a town that truly enjoys it.

Special recognition award for North Haven gridders

The North Haven High School football program was awarded the first annual Bo Kolinsky Special Recognition Award at the 73rd Gold Key Dinner for its work with Mat-thew Jacques, a North Haven boy who was suffering from a congenital heart defect.

The dedication and com-passion the Indians showed towards the local 6-year-old was applauded at the Gold Key event, held April 27 at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville.

“I think it’s great. We worked so hard, and it’s kind of nice to receive an accolade on top of playing the season for Matthew,” Ethan Suraci, a senior captain, said.

During the past few years, the North Haven football team has worked to raise money for various charities.

This past season, senior captain Alex Baglioni learned of Matthew’s condition, and thought the youngster’s plight would be the perfect

cause to get behind.“It was a great opportunity

to help someone from our community,” Baglioni said. “It was a great impact on the community, and the whole community came together as a family.”

One of the highlights of the year came when the In-dians allowed Matthew, who couldn’t take part in contact sports due to his condition, to score a touchdown in the team’s annual Spring Brawl game.

“All of the fire trucks and police officers were there, so after he scored, everyone did the bomb, where Matthew spiked the ball and we all fell to the ground,” Suraci re-called. “We came up, started cheering, and raising him up above. The crowd started cheering, and the fire trucks were going nuts.”

Aside from adopting Mat-thew as part of the team, the Indians were able to raise $13,000 to help the Jacques’ family with medical expenses.

Other surrounding high

schools heard of North Ha-ven’s cause and made dona-tions. Xavier, Branford and East Haven all contributed.

Matthew passed away in late September due to com-plications from a heart trans-plant he received weeks earlier. North Haven coach Tony Sagnella gathered his team in the locker room to

share the tragic news.“Right when we heard the

news, I mean … this kid was pretty much our brother, and dealing with that was really hard,” Suraci said. “It was like losing a teammate. Obviously, tears were had.”

Through it all, the Indians persevered, finished the reg-ular season 9-2, and qualified

for the state playoffs. The Gold Key Dinner is

sponsored by the Connecti-cut Sports Writer Alliance.

The Bo Kolinsky Special Recognition Award is named in honor of former Hartford Courant editor Bo Kolinsky, a longtime member of the CSWA who passed away in 2003.

Residents help shape state’s tourism campaign The Connecticut Office of

Tourism team and Gov. Dan-nel Malloy unveiled a new spring/summer tourism ad campaign, “Revolutionary Thoughts,” at the recent an-nual Connecticut Conference on Tourism, Hartford.

Grounded in findings from research conducted in Q1 and Q2, the campaign con-tinues the “still revolution-

ary” story, leveraging insights about what sets Connecticut apart from its neighbors – fo-cusing on its rich breadth of experiences all within close proximity to each other and travelers.

The campaign playfully communicates through unique pairings of identifi-able destinations the idea that escaping to Connecticut

offers travelers a diverse bal-ance of relaxing and active, historic and contemporary, cultural and nature-oriented experiences — without hav-ing to drive too far.

The state encouraged resi-dents and visitors to get in on the “pairings” fun by entering the #CTGetaway sweepstakes on Connecticut’s social chan-nels that ran through May 2.

CTvisit.com posted a fea-tured #CTGetaway inspired by the campaign creative, and fans had the chance to win that getaway by simply shar-ing two Connecticut destina-tions that they think make a perfect getaway on Connecti-

cut’s Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter channels.

The winning entries re-ceived one of six “Revo-lutionary Getaways.” The promotion ran on Connecti-cut’s Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest channels.

Connecticut’s Office of Tourism, a division of the Department of Economic and Community Development, launched a new state brand identity in 2012, “Connecticut still revolutionary”, a strate-gic marketing initiative de-signed to build pride among residents and bolster the state’s reputation as a busi-ness and tourism destination.

Connecticut is home to fine dining and entertainment, serene beaches and hiking trails, historic treasures and world class museums.

New advertising spots to be aired this spring, titled “Revolutionary Thoughts,” will showcase a diverse array of experiences travelers can enjoy within close proximity, and features creative spots for TV, out of home and dig-ital advertising, along with public relations and social media efforts.
