CARLOS AMORALES: WE’LL SEE HOW ALL REVERBERATESAugust – November 2015NGV InternationalFREEENTRY

Renowned Mexican artist Carlos Amorales will present a dynamic, interactive sculpture as part of the NGV’s ongoing series of contemporary installations in the foyer of NGV International. Recalling the mid-century modernist forms of Alexander Calder, We’ll see how all reverberates 2012 takes the form of three suspended mobile sculptures balanced by copper Zildjian cymbals. Visitors are invited to create and perform experimental percussive compositions through musical gongs, producing sound and movement within the space.Reflecting the artist’s interest in the chance poetics of Dada and the inter-disciplinary happenings of the Fluxus movement, We’ll see how all reverberates invokes a democratic, playful and anarchic impulse, encouraging audience members to become actors and performers. The work has been recently acquired by the NGV and travels to Australia following presentations in major exhibitions in Shanghai, New York, Sharjah (United Arab Emirates) and Mexico City.Carlos Amorales’ We’ll see how all reverberates 2012 is presented as part of the NGV’s ongoing series of Federation Court commissions and made possible with generous support from the Loti & Victor Smorgon Fund.Carlos Amorales, We’ll see how all reverberates, 2012

THE HORSE14 August – 8 November 2015NGV InternationalFREEENTRY

The Horse is a playful and enlightening exhibition celebrating the role this majestic animal has played in the development of human civilisation throughout millennia. Drawn from the holdings of each department within the National Gallery of Victoria’s Collection the exhibition will present a wunderkammer of the horse, tracing depictions and celebrations of this magnificent animal through works spanning a 3000-year period. From noble steed to the work-horse, the exhibition begins with ancient depictions in Greek mythology, segueing to China during the Han and Tang dynasties, then turning to India during the Mughal Empire (1526–1827). The Horse will also explore the animal’s more recent manifestations ranging from horseracing to the glamour of equestrian imagery in today’s fashion world. Panoramic in its breadth and encyclopedic in its scope, the exhibition ranges from ancient Greek vases, photographs and major oils on canvas, to saddles, sculptures, riding garments and a Melbourne Cup.

JOHN WARDLE ARCHITECTS: EPHEMERAL ARCHITECTURE COMMISSION 2015 September 2015 – late April 2016Grollo Equiset Garden, NGV International

DESIGN

The Ephemeral Architecture Commission is a new annual initiative offering the opportunity for emerging and established practitioners to design and present innovative designs for a temporary outdoor installation in the NGV’s Grollo Equiset Garden. For 2015 the inaugural commission has been developed by John Wardle Architects. Taking inspiration from the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, an iconic public performance venue in Melbourne, Wardle’s innovative steel, timber and textile structure will create a theatrical centrepiece offering shade, retreat and a place for performance and workshops. Adaptable and evocative, the structure utilises parametric design to achieve the generous span of a lightweight structure. Beneath the outer layer of gridded steel, textile elements immerse visitors within a singular space. This commission is possible with support from The Spotlight Foundation. The NGV Garden is generously supported by Loris Orthwein.

PLEASURE & REALITYSeptember 2015 – February 2016The Ian Potter Centre: NGV AustraliaFREEENTRY

Presenting the latest practices in contemporary art, Pleasure & Reality will include immersive installations, sculpture, video and painting, from Marian Tubbs’ seductive digital compositions to Justene Williams’ hallucinatory performative video works. OUR LAND IS ALIVE: HERMANNSBURG POTTERS FOR KIDS19 September 2015 – April 2016The Ian Potter Centre: NGV AustraliaNGVKIDS

Our Land is Alive: Hermannsburg Potters for Kids is an exciting collaboration with the renowned Hermannsburg Potters of the Northern Territory, who recently celebrated twenty-five years of producing their unique clay and terracotta pots. Through a shared love of Australian Rules football, Hermannsburg Potters for Kids will bring together the two passionate communities of Melbourne and Hermannsburg. The exhibition will present a major NGV commission of twenty AFL-themed Hermannsburg pots which depict iconic moments for Aboriginal players in the AFL, such as the celebrated image of Nicky Winmar lifting his shirt and proudly pointing to the colour of his skin at Victoria Park in 1993. The exhibition will also include a full clay model of the historic Hermannsburg Mission church, as well as a vibrant display of AFL paraphernalia, photography and footage. Children and families can participate in a hands-on making activity and, throughout the exhibition, meet and engage with some of the Hermannsburg Potters themselves, who will be artists-in-residence at the NGV. Our Land is Alive: Hermannsburg Potters for Kids is generously supported by The Dewhurst Family. The NGV Kids program is supported by the Truby & Florence Williams Charitable Trust.

RICHARD MOSSE: THE ENCLAVEOctober 2015 – February 2016NGV International FREE ENTRY

Commissioned for the Irish representation at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013 and recently acquired by the National Gallery of Victoria, The Enclave is an immersive, six-screen video art installation by Irish contemporary artist Richard Mosse. Partly inspired by Joseph Conrad’s modernist literary masterpiece Heart of Darkness, the visceral and moving work was filmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo using 16mm colour infra-red film, which captures otherwise invisible parts of the spectrum. The resulting imagery in Mosse’s work is hallucinatory and dream-like with the usual greens of jungle and forest replaced by shimmering violet. The Enclave depicts a complicated, strife-ridden place in a way that reflects its complexity, using a strategy of beauty and transfixion to combat the wider invisibility of a conflict that has claimed so many.

LURID BEAUTY: AUSTRALIAN SURREALISM AND ITS ECHOESOctober 2015 – January 2016The Ian Potter Centre: NGV AustraliaEXHIBITION ADMISSION FEES APPLYMAJOR EXHIBITION

Surrealism was one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century. Noted for their experimental and playful approaches, Surrealist artists sought to challenge artistic conventions, opening their work to unexpected results and to the accidental image. Through techniques such as automatic drawing and collage, artists worked with the aim of liberating the unconscious mind to effect social and political revolution; others created hallucinatory and dream-like images to reveal their innermost desires.Surrealism shook up the staid Australian art world of the 1930s and attracted a generation of young radicals who went on to become some of the Australia’s most esteemed artists. Surrealism’s echoes and reverberations continue to be felt into the present day, with its rich legacy evident in the practice of some of Australia’s most exciting contemporary artists.Lurid Beauty will present over 200 paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, fashion, films and photographs as well as considering theatre and performance in an exuberant exploration of Surrealism and its profound influence on Australian art and creative life. Juxtaposing historical and contemporary works, the immersive exhibition will showcase the work of artists including Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Max Dupain, Erik Thake, James Gleeson, Julie Rrap, Pat Brassington, Leigh Bowery and David Noonan.

In November 2015 the NGV will open a new dedicated space, presenting a diverse program of design and architecture-related content. The NGV Design Studio will be a flexible space to explore and represent key ideas and issues in design and architecture and in doing so enhance the appreciation for contemporary design.
