tinues. Apparently about 50 percent of the people who con-tract the virus die from it.

In West Africa, Ebola has infected more than 8,000 people, killing half. Every day, the deadly hemorrhagic virus attacks hundreds of others. With no cure or effective treatment, bodies

are being buried or burned en masse.“There is no evidence that the

EVD (Ebola virus disease) epidemic in West Africa is being brought under control,” the World Health Organiza-tion reports.

Here is a question and answer se-ries written by The Associated Press:

Ebola: How It Spreads When is Ebola contagious?

Only when someone is showing symptoms, which can start with vague symptoms including a fever, flu-like body aches and abdominal pain, and then vomiting and diarrhea.

How does Ebola spread?Through close contact with a symp-

tomatic person's bodily fluids, such as blood, sweat, vomit, feces, urine, sali-va or semen. Those fluids must have an entry point, like a cut or scrape or someone touching the nose, mouth or eyes with contaminated hands, or be-ing splashed. That's why health care workers wear protective gloves and other equipment.

The World Health Organization says blood, feces and vomit are the most infectious fluids, while the virus is found in saliva mostly once patients are severely ill and the whole live vi-rus has never been culled from sweat.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said Sunday that a health-care worker who provided hospital care for the first patient to die from Ebola in the United States

has tested positive for the virus. The worker, who was not identified, was wearing full protective gear while at-tending to the patient during his sec-ond visit to the hospital, according to a hospital official. If the diagnosis is confirmed, it would be the first known case of Ebola being transmitted in the U.S.

What about more casual contact?Ebola isn't airborne. Dr. Tom Frie-

den, director of the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention, has said people don't get exposed by sitting next to someone on the bus.

"This is not like flu. It's not like measles, not like the common cold. It's not as spreadable, it's not as infec-tious as those conditions," he added.

Who gets tested when Ebola is suspected?

Hospitals with a suspected case call their health department or the CDC to go through a checklist to determine the person's level of risk. Among the questions are whether the person reports a risky contact with a known Ebola patient, how sick they are and whether an alternative diagno-sis is more likely. Most initially suspi-cious cases in the U.S. haven't met the criteria for testing.

met for their regular October meeting Monday evening with President Steve Allen presiding and all members present: Mike Anderson, Mark Pollock, Dana Roark, Dooli Rugg, Deb Helfrich and Jeff Black. Also seated at the table were Superintendent Brad Morris and Board Clerk Julie Johnson.

The agenda was not packed full of items; however, the board spent ample time on the items they had.

Sixth graders' participation in middle school athletics was discussed at length as it is about every fall with requirements changed frequently. Some board members questioned how those changes are “inconsistent.” However, the number of seventh and eighth graders out for sports varies each fall. That number of participants determines whether or not sixth graders will be included.

The board approved the minimum number of 12 students for seventh and eighth graders' participation in basketball. If the number is less than 12, sixth graders will be allowed to practice and play at the coach's discretion. This will be separate for the boys and girls teams. For example, if the boys team needs the sixth graders to play, that doesn't automatically mean the sixth grade girls will also move up and play

and vice versa. It will be based on the individual team's needs for that season.

Rugg and Roark voted against approval as they voiced their opinion that both sixth grade boys and girls should either play on the junior high team or not.

After lengthy discussion the board approved purchase of two used vehicles from Bogner, Inc., for USD 255. One of those is a 2011 Chrysler Town and Country with 37,000 miles and a three-month warranty. Cost is $16,995. The other is a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox AWD with 32,000 miles and a three-month warranty. Cost is $20,995. Another option that was not approved was a 2013 Chevy Impala with 39,000 miles with a cost of about $16,900. Rugg and Roark preferred the Impala so voted no for the Equinox.

In other business, current bills of $294,335.51 received board approval.

Reporting on the Site Council, PK – 6 Principal Marcia Cantrell said they've had a few resignations and need about three new members. Those can be from the student body, faculty or public. Besides Principal Cantrell and 7-12 Principal Brent Shaffer, current Site Council members are: Shawna Schupbach, Candi Davis, Connie Rooks and Kyle Jacobs.

Principal Cantrell updated the board

on the elementary's “on-watch” status. Cantrell said after meeting with their representative Darla Smith, she was relieved to learn SB Elementary is “not' on their priority list.

“That makes me feel better,” Cantrell said. Smith offered guidance to the leadership team. Cantrell said the primary focus is on reading and math.

Board member Helfrich spoke at length about a security seminar she attended. Some of the topics were the importance of locked schools; community-wide plans if there is an emergency at the school; and much more.

Superintendent Morris Updates Enrollment and More

In his report to the board, Superintendent Morris said enrollment figures, on which state aid is based, is 223.5 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) students. That is down from last year's total of 235 FTE.

USD 255's estimated budget was $2,021,144. With the lower enrollment, the adopted budget is $2,056,968. That makes a budget variance of $35,824.

Of that variance amount, Morris said, “It's a lot more manageable than we thought.”

Updating on buildings and grounds, Morris said the SB Rec Commission will purchase a new water heater for the weight room. Inter-Green Plumbing of Pratt has toured each building repairing all the water fountains and minor plumbing problems.

Heartland Seating agreed to pay for all the concrete work at the football stadium. The superintendent thanked board member Black for all his volunteer work on the new handicap access at the newly redone bleachers.

KD Tree Service removed the cedar trees on the east side of the tennis courts. This makes it easier to get from the tennis courts to the football field area. Student Achievements and Upcoming

ObituaryDAN PSHIGODA

HARDTNER, Kansas – Dan Pshigoda, 80, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2014, at Alva, Oklahoma. Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 14, 2014, at 10:30 am at the Hardtner Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Hardtner-Elwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa, Kansas. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lanmanmemorials.com.

Danial Martin was born on April 21, 1924, to John and Mary Pshigoda in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Dan had his tonsils removed and met the love of his life, Norma Jean Page. They were united in marriage on August 12, 1951.

Dan is survived by three daughters, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, three sisters, two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Elwood Township Fire Department or the Share Medical Center Hospice and given to the funeral home.

WORTH M. REEDWorth M. Reed, 72, died October 9,

2014, at Kingman, Kansas. He was born

Jan. 31, 1942, at Moran, Kansas, the son of Kenneth and Nadine Foster Reed. A longtime Kingman resident, he was a former mechanic and retired from the USAF after serving during the

Vietnam War.Survivors include his stepmother

Colleen Reed; brothers Dayle, Kerry, David and Brian; sisters Beverly Roots, Barbara Hefner, Betty Reed and Julia

Hays. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; and sister Karen Reed.

Funeral services were held be 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at the Livingston Funeral Home, Kingman. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Hoosier Cemetery.

ANTON MERRILL SCHNITZERAnton Merrill Schnitzer, 92, of

Bartlesville died on Sunday, Oct. 12. He was born in Alva, Oklahoma, to Alice and Toney Schnitzer. He had no siblings.

Merrill attended grade school at the Northwestern Oklahoma State University teacher’s training school and graduated from Alva

High School in 1939. He worked briefly at Spartan Aircraft Company in Tulsa before graduating from Northwestern Oklahoma State University in 1943. He attended the Naval Reserve Officer’s engineering school at the US Naval Academy and was commissioned as an ensign in December 1943. He and Winona Marie Maddox of Aline, Oklahoma,nwere married in January of 1944. They lived in State College, Pennsylvania, while he attended the Naval engineering class at Penn State University.

Merrill was then sent to the Amphibious Training Base near Norfolk, Virginia, for training in amphibious warfare and was assigned to the crew of the USS LST 681

as engineer officer. They picked up their new ship in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, and proceeded down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans, then through the Panama Canal to San Diego, and on to Pearl Harbor. After moving Army personnel and supplies in the South Pacific, they participated in the invasions of Luzon in the Philippines and Okinawa.

After the end of World War II, Merrill and Winona attended Oklahoma State University where he received a masters degree and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Xi and Phi Lambda Upsilon honor societies and the American Chemical Society.

He was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company for his entire professional career of 33 years. He began as a research chemist in the research and development department, served in the engineering department, and developed several patents for Phillips. In 1966, he was named food, drug and toxicant coordinator. In 1971, he taught a management cou;rse in human relations in Madrid, Spain. He retired from Phillips as the director of consumer protection.

Merrill was active in church and civic activities including Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Community Concerts, Friends of the Library, Churches United for Community Concern, Toastmasters, PTA, Mutual Girls Club, and various church offices. He also taught youth and church classes for many years. Merrill is survived by Winona, his wife of 70 years; daughter Janine Novack of Tulsa; son Steven of Owasso; granddaughter Taylor Novac, and grandsons Landon and Trenton Schnitzer.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the A. Merrill Schnitzer Memorial Fund, c/o East Cross United Methodist Church, 820 S.E. Madison Blvd., Bartlesville, OK 74006.

Visitation will be on Thursday at 9 a.m. prior to the start of the funeral service.

Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 10 a.m. at East Cross United Methodist Church. Interment will follow the service in the Alva Municipal Cemetery, Alva, at 4 p.m.

State's University Singers will kick off their Nashville tour with a perfor-mance in Enid on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m.

Music Education National Conference featuring the very best music programs in the country. The award-winning en-semble is made up of 21 students con-sisting of music majors and non-music majors. The choir will perform a vari-ety of music ranging from the Renais-sance period to contemporary.

Following the performance in Enid,

the University Singers tour will head to Nashville. The performance will take place Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Ryman Ballroom of the Gaylord Opryland Re-sort and Convention Center.

In 2014, the choir performed at the Oklahoma Music Educators As-sociation annual conference. During the spring of 2013, the ensemble per-formed for thousands on their tour of China, with concerts in Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou. This year, the University Singers has accepted invi-tations to perform at Carnegie Hall and St. John the Divine, among other ven-ues in New York.

speaking to a true American hero who is fiercely patriotic, proudly served his country as a Green Beret and lost his right leg from the knee down doing so, and is paying it forward it in a big way.

He is John Wayne Walding, born on the Fourth of July and a native Texan. It doesn't get more American than that – except maybe when that individual is awarded the Silver Star Medal – the third highest military decoration for val-or awarded to someone serving in the United States Armed Forces. The medal is awarded for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States.

“I've gotten an absolute bear hug from America since I got shot,” Walding said. “I feel like I must be a part of some-thing bigger than me. I feel an obligation to help others.”

He's doing that by employing wound-ed veterans at his “5 Toes Custom Gun Shop” in Carrollton, Texas, “My compa-ny is an idea rather than a job,” Walding said. “Our nation loses 22 vets per day to suicide – I want to combat that.” A for-mer Marine sniper is under his employ, as will be a double amputee next year.

Walding and Kiowa, Kansas, native Eric Reed were both 3rd Special Forc-es Green Beret soldiers. Reed said he served in the same battalion as Walding, though on different teams, and they are friends.

Reed plans a fundraising BBQ and auction in Kiowa Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Kiowa Community Building to ben-efit wounded Green Beret soldiers and families of the fallen. This is through the Harriman-Miller Green Beret Organiza-tion of which Reed is an active member. Harriman-Miller works closely with Chapter 100 of the Special Forces As-sociation and 3rd Group Command and staff.

The Harriman-Miller Green Beret organization provides timely assistance to soldiers and their families in their time of need and is based in Fayette-ville, North Carolina. The organization is named for Green Beret Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller, who received the Med-al of Honor after performing a selfless, heroic act above and beyond the call of duty: providing protective fire for his team, knowing he would lose his own life. The other honoree is Chief Warrant Officer 2 Stanley Harriman, who re-ceived the Silver Star posthumously for his gallantry and personal sacrifice that saved others in the line of duty.

The Day Walding Lost His Leg In Afghanistan

Staff Sergeant John W. Walding, US Army, was communications sergeant for Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 3336, Special Operations Task Force 33, Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force, Afghanistan in support of Opera-tion Enduring Freedom.

The day that forever transformed Walding's life was April 6, 2008, when

he and nine other Special Forces sol-diers from a 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) assault team were attacked by the Hezeb Islami al Gulbadin. They were searching for insurgents in Afghan-istan’s Shok Valley.

The mountain village where the in-surgents were hiding had been used to stockpile weapons since the time of the Russian invasion in the 1980s. With no roads leading into the valley, ODA 3336, along with their Afghan commando counterparts, flew in by helicopter.

Upon reaching the infiltration point, the team made a 10-foot jump out of the birds, as the pilots were unable to land. Many of them landed in a waist-deep, icy river, and with the temperatures al-ready around 30 degrees Fahrenheit, the climate began to take its toll. In order to reach their target, the group made its way up a treacherous mountainside to the fortress-like village, which rested on a hill at about 10,000 feet.

All seemed quiet as they approached the compound. They knew the enemy was waiting for them, but were unable to tell where. When the lead element came to within a few hundred meters of the compound, they began to receive heavy fire from all directions. What ensued was a six-and-a-half-hour firefight, during which the team called in Air Force F-15s for danger-close air support 70 times.

Jim Wilkinson, retired judge of Major County, will be at The Sod House Museum Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m., to present his reflections and overview of an event he calls The Great Wolf Hunt of 1923. This event led to several years of organized endeavor to reduce the coyote population of Major County.

Wilkinson will describe how organizers mapped out a region of the county and recruited locals to participate in a round-up of coyotes on foot. Up to seven square miles were mapped and lines were drawn on the perimeter from which a ring of captives would result. They had intricate rules and regulations and a chain of command by which they expected to operate. The efficiency of the activity drew the attention of Oklahoma state leaders, who published their admiration of the hunts. To recruit masses of people and gain some enthusiasm they dubbed it a “wolf hunt,” knowing interest in finding wolves was much more prevalent than interest in nabbing a wiry coyote.

The event grew until local leaders discovered the advertising power and notoriety made possible by the advent of motion pictures. The local theatre manager made arrangements with a national concern to made a movie of the

January 1923 hunt. The “Great Hunt” was expected to be a huge success and was filmed in its entirety. The resulting movie would then be distributed across the nation and Major County would become famous for its location as a mecca for hunters. The hunt took place but complications ensued, causing turmoil in Fairview. The suspenseful events that transpired make this an enjoyable story to relate to the ages.

Wilkinson, a native of the area, has researched the history of Major County for a number of years. During Wilkinson's time as judge in Major County, he served as delegate from the Oklahoma Judicial Conference to the American Bar Association (ABA). He was on various committees in the ABA's judicial division, published articles in the ABA's Judges Journal about the working conditions of rural judges, and was editor of National Trail News until 1996. In 2002 he completed the publication of “Gloss Mountain Country, Volume 2: A History of Major County, Oklahoma.” It was while doing extensive research for this book that he stumbled onto the “Great Hunt.” His judicial work gave him valuable experience, as he converted his talents to doing historical research

after his retirement. He now volunteers with Major County Historical Society, where he finds resources for his ongoing research.

Board of Education Thursday evening they hired a new cook, a teacher's assistant and approved the 2014-15 Estimate of Needs.

Board President Terry Graham presided over the meeting with all members present including: Beth Guffy, Roger Allen, Allison Armbruster and Aaron Smith. Others present were: Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal

Shane Feely and Minutes Clerk Linda Gordon.

After meeting in executive session almost 30 minutes, upon return to open session, the board hired Cheryl Czerniak as cook. They also approved Jaci Heath as teacher assistant to help kindergarten teacher Vanessa Garvie.

The 2014/2015 Estimate of Needs to be sent to the excise board for certification was approved as follows: General Fund -- $3,643,768.18; Building

Fund -- $491,702.16; Child Nutrition Fund -- $ 60,828.50.

Encumbrances and warrants were approved as follows: General Fund -- Encumbrances -- $912.87; Warrants -- $912.87; Bond Fund -- Encumbrances -- $76,242.93; Warrants -- $76,242.93

The board approved the FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) account No. 820 as a sub account in the Activity Fund.

Burlington hires a new cook and a teacher’s assistant

ty commissioners met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 14, because the courthouse was closed on Monday for the holiday.

The commissioners opened the meet-ing up by hearing from the senior project manager of Cedar Ridge Construction. The company was claiming risk respon-sibility for the construction of new fa-cilities for the Carmen Rescue and Fire Department.

There was confusion and disagree-ment between the representative and the commissioners through the discussion. Chad Roach was under the impression that Cedar Ridge would act as architect, but the county would still seek out bids for contractors for Carmen Rescue’s new facilities. But Cedar Ridge was claiming that they would be risk manager over the construction, and hire the qualified sub-contractors to design and build the new facilities.

Alfalfa County commissioners meeting“If you’re acting as architect that’s

one thing, but if you’re acting as general contractor that’s a totally different thing,” said Commissioner Doug Murrow. “We don’t have to bid out an architect, but you do have to bid out a general contractor.”

The representative from Cedar Ridge disagreed, stating that a “construction manager-at-risk is a recognized entity in Oklahoma.”

In a “construction manager-at-risk” approach, the property owner or agency – in this case Carmen Rescue – selects a contractor – Cedar Ridge – to consult, based on the contractor’s previous expe-rience and fees, rather than via the bid-ding process. The property owner and the consulting contractor settle on a fixed price for the project, called a guaranteed maximum price. Once an agreement is struck, the consulting contractor transi-tions to the role of general contractor and construction begins.

The commissioners were still in dis-agreement about the proper channels to use for the contract agreement, so both parties agreed to table the proposal for next week’s meeting.

The commissioners then reviewed and approved the minutes from last week’s meeting, M & O warrants for payment, blanket purchase orders, road crossing

permits and monthly officer reports.Other items on the agenda that were

approved by the commissioners were: • Oil and gas lease for lots 4-6, Block

1, Gibson Addition,• Nescatunga Rural Fire Department

requesting to re-appoint Carol Doman and NRFD Board Member, and request-ing appointment of John Bellamy as requisitioning officer for Nescatunga Re-sponders,

• Project maintenance financing and right of way agreement Project Number CIRB-102C(130) JP 24832(09) Phase 3-Carmen,

• Resolution for Project Agreement to resurface five miles of blacktop, NS-255 Project Number CIRB-102C(130) JP 24832(09), and

• STP Projects, resurfacing blacktop three miles east of Goltry.

The commissioners agreed to table one other item on the agenda for open bids on a tanker truck for Nescatunga Responders after receiving only one bid from Blanchat Mfg, Inc., of Harper, Kan-sas, in the amount of $169,448. It would cost $20,000 more to install an automatic transmission.

Having no more business on the agenda, the commissioners adjourned the meeting.

Less than two weeks remain for registered voters in Alfalfa County to apply for absentee ballots to be mailed to them for the Nov. 4 general election, Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein said today.

The general election has a three-column, two-sided ballot with 16 races for precincts 220 and 230. Precincts 110, 120 and 140 have an extra race on the ballot for the County Commissioner District 1 position between Darrol Schroeder and Doug Murrow for a total of 17 races. Precincts 310 and 330 will also have 17 races on their ballot. The voters in those precincts will have the County Commissioner District 3 position between Randy Nickel and Ray Walker to choose from.

On the front-side of the ballot the top race on the left side column allows straight party voting. If a voter does not wish to vote straight party, he/she needs to mark the arrow next to the individual candidates. If the voter marks straight party, every candidate of the marked political affiliation under that column for straight party will receive a vote without the voter actually also marking the candidate. However, if the voter is reluctant to take this shortcut, he can mark

the straight party AND the candidate. A VOTE FOR A CANDIDATE ALWAYS OVERRIDES A STRAIGHT PARTY VOTE.

“In other words, if a person marks a Republican straight party vote and then studies the candidates below that area of the ballot and wants to vote for a Democrat candidate, the vote for the Democrat candidate will override the straight party vote for a Republican on that particular race,” clarified Stein.

“VOTERS MUST REMEMBER TO VOTE BOTH SIDES OF THIS BALLOT,” emphasized Stein. “The back side of the ballot includes three state questions that are very important for each voter to consider.”

Applications for absentee ballots must be in the hands of the County Election Board no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, to be processed.

Any registered voter eligible to vote in the election may vote by absentee ballot without stating a reason, Stein said. Absentee voters may apply in person at the County Election Board office or may send their applications by mail, fax, or e-mail. Voters also may apply for absentee ballots for the following reasons:

• Registered voters who are physically

incapacitated and voters who care for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be left unattended may apply for absentee ballots only by mail, fax, e-mail, or via an agent who is at least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose name appears on the ballot.

• Registered voters who are confined to nursing homes in the county may apply by mail, by fax, by e-mail, or via an agent who is at least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose name appears on the ballot.

• Military personnel, residents of Alfalfa County living overseas, and the spouses and dependents of each group may apply only by mail, by fax, or by e-mail. Deadline to request absentee ballots nears

Oct. 9, Jeff White was voted in unanimously by the other board members to fulfill the unexpired term of T. J. Allison, who resigned because of health problems. White has served previously on the board and brings a wealth of experience to the position.

In other action, the board set the pay for three non-certified employees. Connite Robers, head cook and nutrition manager, will receive $10.65 per hour; Carla Sanborn, cook, will receive $9.55 per hour; and Sarai Aranas, elementary school para-professional, will receive $10.40 per hour.

The board approved several fundraisers. A boys and girls track lap-a-thon was OK'd. Students will ask pa-trons to pay so much per lap they run around the track. A similar event for girls basketball was approved. It is called a Free Throw A Thon.

The boys and girls basketball teams will sell dis-count merchant cards. Local merchants will make available special offers and the card printing company will keep part of the revenue and the students will re-ceive a commission for selling the cards.

The meeting was adjourned after only four minutes.

Registered voters in Alfalfa County who become physically incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, won’t have to miss the Nov. 4 general election, County Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein said today.

Stein explained that state law permits registered voters who will be unable to go to the polls because they became incapacitated after 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, to vote on an emergency basis. “Physical incapacitation” includes a variety of conditions – injury, illness, childbirth – that prevent a person from voting in person at the polls on election day.

Aside from unplanned emergencies, “state law also allows a registered voter who is physically incapacitated on an ongoing basis or a person who is charged with the care of a physically incapacitated person who cannot be left unattended to submit an application for absentee ballot by an agent,” the county election secretary said.

The agent may be any person of the voter’s choosing who is at least 16 years of age and who is not employed by or related within the third degree of consanguinity or affinity to any person whose name appears on the ballot, Also, a person may serve as an agent for only one person at any election, Stein explained.

“If you think that you or someone you know fits into this category, please contact the Alfalfa County Election Board office at 580-596-2718 as soon as possible for more information,” Stein said.

system roughed up much of the South for a second day Tuesday, knocking out power to tens of thousands as it snarled morning commutes and kept many un-der a tornado watch.

The vast system, which claimed two lives Monday after spinning off torna-does in Arkansas and Missouri, sent heavy thunderstorms across much of Georgia. Cars crawled under heavy rain on morning commutes in Atlanta as wa-ter pooled on some low-lying roadways.

The Storm Prediction Center said more than 36 million people were in the path of damaging storms that formed in the Midwest earlier in the week. The center said possible tornadoes and dam-aging wind gusts remained a threat as the storms head across the southern Ap-palachians into the Carolinas.

Georgia Power reported rough-ly 3,000 customers without electricity Tuesday afternoon, the bulk of the out-ages in the greater Atlanta area and north Georgia. Alabama Power reported about 7,000 customers still without power

Tuesday afternoon. Tens of thousands of the utility's customers had their power restored overnight and early Tuesday.

Tornadoes also touched down in two Atlanta suburbs. An EF1 tornado hit Al-pharetta — northeast of Atlanta — and an EF0 tornado was confirmed in East Point, southeast of downtown Atlanta, said National Weather Service meteorol-ogist Ryan Willis.

In Louisiana, Gov. Bobby Jindal de-clared a state of emergency Monday even before the severe weather had cleared out of his state. The storms downed trees and power lines in Louisiana, leaving thousands without electricity.

A major utility provider in Louisiana, Entergy, said some more than 37,000 customers remained without power in hard-hit regions of that state. Large trees fell on some houses in Monroe, a city in northeast Louisiana, where downed branches and tree trunks block many streets.

No additional deaths were reported by later Tuesday morning as the storms raced eastward.

In Alabama a day earlier, a tree fell

on a mobile home about 25 miles north-west of Birmingham, killing a 75-year-old woman and injuring her husband, a coroner said. A tornado near Ashdown, Arkansas, killed a man and injured his wife when their home was destroyed Monday, authorities said, adding it was one of two tornadoes in the state that day.

Two tornadoes also touched down Monday in Missouri, causing roof dam-age and toppling trees, according to the National Weather Service. And in Texas, lightning was suspected in a fire that set ablaze an oil well site near Longview.

Authorities said the storms dumped enough rain in Tennessee to cause some street flooding in Chattanooga, forcing road closures. Trees were knocked down and the heavy rains and high winds prompted some school districts in south-east Tennessee to delay the start of class-es by up to two hours Tuesday.

The weather also led to the postpone-ment of Game 3 of the American League Championship Series in Kansas City, between the Royals and the Baltimore Orioles.

Storms blamed for 2 deaths sweep across the South

SKIATOOK, Okla. (AP) — Skia-took Lake in northeastern Oklahoma has dipped to its shallowest level since it was created 30 years ago, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Sara Goodeyon, deputy chief of public affairs of the Corp's Tulsa Dis-trict, said the lake had a level of about 698 feet on Friday, and that despite re-cent rains, it's more than 15 feet below normal. The last time it was above the normal level of 714 feet was more than four years ago, the Tulsa World report-ed (http://bit.ly/1D9xgYj ).

"Skiatook has essentially been in drought since 2010," Goodeyon said.

The Corps is planning to host an In-teragency Drought Management Com-mittee later this month at the Skiatook Community Center. It will include representatives from a variety of agen-cies, including federal, state and tribal organizations.

"Calling the interagency drought meeting is just part of what we do to really monitor the health of the lake," Goodeyon said. "If there are water supply users, we start monitoring how much they are using and warn them if they are coming within their limit . Ev-erybody sits down and talks about how can we best manage the resource that we have."

Nicole McGavock of the Nation-al Weather Service in Tulsa said it will take "several rounds of rain" for the lake to return to normal levels. A long-range forecast finds that there is a slightly enhanced chance for above-normal rainfall over the next three months.

More than 150 insurgents were killed in the fight. But due to approaching weath-er, rising casualties for the team, and nearly 200 insurgents closing in on their position, they were forced to withdraw.

Walding was one of several team members who were injured, taking a sniper bullet through his right leg under his knee.

“I ripped off my boot lace and lit-erally tied my leg to my thigh to keep it from flapping around,” Walding said. Unfortunately, the approach route the team used to reach the village was not available. Stuck between a hail of gun-fire and the edge of a cliff, their only option was to go down the cliff face. With intense firing still coming upon them, the team quickly scaled the moun-tain using rocks and branches growing out of the cliff. Every member of the team sustained some form of injury, so the less injured helped the more critical casualties down the sheer face. In order to reach the solid ground below, once Walding, with his severed leg, reached the bottom of the climb he and others had to make a 20-foot drop.

Walding and his teammates showed true bravery, bringing everyone off of the mountain despite the odds. Because of their teamwork and camaraderie, the 10 members of ODA 3336 present that day all returned safely, and were each awarded the Silver Star on Dec. 12, 2008.

"When you become a Green Beret, you become part of a brotherhood that you get nowhere else," Walding said.

Walding Tells of Living with Dis-ability

Although hailed an American hero, Walding described his feelings after the ordeal.

“When my leg was taken from me it was hard to swallow. I felt lots of insecu-rity and sadness. I'm a guy who literally climbed mountains and jumped out of airplanes. It is a gut-wrenching dose of reality. I have a strong faith and belief in God. My wife has been the rock. It's a tough situation and I can see how you could go down that dark hole.”

Walding was quoted in a earlier pub-lication saying, "Absolutely I have prob-lems with crowds, and I think about the day I got my leg shot off and having seen my (military) brothers shot in the head. Yeah, I think about it. But I don't let it beat me. One of the big reasons why I don't let it beat me is we owe it to the fallen to live well. I'm back here. They're not. I'm breathing. They're not. If I don't do the best I can back here, then their death is a tragedy. That's what I'm trying to do."

In the Newsgram interview, he men-tioned his “good friend” Navy Seal Chris Kyle, author of “The American Sniper,” who was murdered by a vet he was help-ing at a shooting range in Dallas.

“This Feb. 13 will mark my two years sober. I just drank consistently, which is prevalent in the military. After Chris died I realized I was good, but not great. I owe it to them (the fallen) to be great. That's why I'm building that rifle for Eric.”

“I thank God every day for my wife and children.”

When he lost his leg, Walding and his wife Amy had a girl and boy who were age two and three, and have since had two more daughters.

“We had to show our children who the bad guys are – the Taliban. It's sad to have to do that at a young age, but oth-erwise my children didn't understand. They only knew I was in the army,” Walding said.

“Honestly, I didn't have a huge prob-lem. We had a wonderful support net-work. We're just a proud America fam-ily who wouldn't want to live anywhere else.” When asked how his children re-act to his artificial leg, he chuckled and said, “They sometimes use the blade like a rocket launcher.”

Pro Golfer Helps Walding Open Gun Store

Walding met up with pro golfer turned commentator David Feherty of

Irish heritage who is known for helping wounded veterans. The two met at a golf tournament in Washington in 2008 and later became buddies as they shot to-gether at Dallas shooting ranges.

“Feherty put the offer on the table for me to open a a gun store. He's known as a huge 2nd Amendment guy. Here I am living the dream,” Walding said. He said that Feherty became a U.S. citizen in 2010 “because he said he could no longer live here in the U.S. and not be a citizen after meeting veterans.”

Feherty bought Walding all the nec-essary equipment to open a rifle build-ing business. 5 Toes' mission is to build the finest hand-crafted, custom rifles by employing great Americans that have fought and bled for their country. Em-ployment there is given to the veterans because of their service and sacrifice, as they seek a new direction in life.

“David Feherty has done more for me mentally than anyone,” Walding said. “There are no words to say what he has meant to me and so many others like me.”

In addition to his business, Walding is the first amputee to graduate from sniper school. He competed in the Bos-ton Marathon, placing in his division.

Walding's Advice for AmericansOne of Walding's major concerns is

the general American population's “ig-norance about our country's history. It's scary.” He said it's vital for people to read about the nation's laws and history.

“We have a country who cares about vets. We need to rethink how we help our vets – we need to help transition these guys, give them a working com-pass,” Walding said.

He also wants to raise awareness of Special Operations. He said 60 percent of Special Operations are done by Green Berets. “We're doing the most and have the most Killed in Action. People don't know that. We are the quiet profession-als. The motto on our crest is `Liberate the Oppressed.'”

Of all the advice he can give to the American people, Walding said, “Don't ever underestimate the two words, 'thank You.' It's the validation for my sacrifice, I only have five toes. Those words are my validation. It tells me I lost my leg for my country, which is the greatest place in the world to live.”

3 people deadbelieved to be newspaperpublisher, family

DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) — Three peo-ple found dead in an Oklahoma home are believed to be a newspaper publish-er, his wife and daughter, police said Tuesday.

Duncan Police Chief Danny Ford said autopsy results are pending but that as far as investigators can tell, the bod-ies are those of John and Tinker Hruby and daughter Katherine.

"We are treating this as a triple homi-cide," Ford said. "We have a lot of evi-dence, but as far as looking at anybody, we have no suspects."

Ford said the family's housekeeper found the bodies Monday and called po-lice. He declined to say how the family is believed to have been killed.

John Hruby was the publisher of The Marlow Review, a weekly newspaper with a circulation of about 3,500, where his wife also worked. The paper, on its website, posted an entry Monday asking readers to "please pray with us."

"At this time The Marlow Review asks the general public for prayers fol-lowing the tragic deaths of John Hruby, our publisher, his wife, Tinker, and their daughter Katherine. Our staff endeavors to continue to serve Marlow to the best of our ability going forward," the state-ment read.

Mark Thomas, the executive vice president of the Oklahoma Press Asso-ciation, remembered the Hrubys as com-mitted to journalism and to the town.

"They were fun. They enjoyed life. They were firm, yet fair, and we have not come to grips with the fact that we just won't see their smiling faces at our next meeting. It's really devastating to the newspaper people in Oklahoma," Thomas said.

Todd Brooks, the news and sports editor at the newspaper, said Tuesday the staff was still in shock.

"It was surreal yesterday. It was kind of walking around in a zombie-like state. We consider ourselves a family paper. We had six full-time employees here. Now there are four of us."

ing to get a report about a speeding truck.7:33 p.m. Minor accident, CPD ad-

vised of accident on 510 county line and W 5th, deputy advised and en route, called OHP, deputy advised accident was on CR 520.

October 7, 20148:48 a.m. Suspicious person, advised

of a silver/gray Jeep missing part of the front bumper is a suspicious vehicle in Jet.

10:50 a.m. Trash dumping, respondent advised someone has filled up the dump-ster at his RV park, deputy advised.

October 8, 20146:02 a.m. Officer assistance, CPD

called and said that respondent is stuck north of Cherokee at the 4 way and need-ed someone to direct traffic around him till respondent could get his 9,000 lb pickup truck, respondent wanted to see if maybe someone could pull him to Cher-okee, deputy advised respondent to call wrecker, while on the phone respondent advised to take no further action.

5:36 p.m. Information, respondent called in and reported a 4 wheeler falling off someone’s trailer 2 miles north of the Cherokee 4 way, respondent called back and said owner showed back up.

9:17 p.m. Information, CPD notified of 911 call, respondent advised that a pickup with a gooseneck trailer on it was loading up aluminum when they went to approach the vehicle the people left, re-spondent said there were 3 people 2 load-ing and 1 driver, respondent didn’t have description of vehicle, respondent didn’t want to make a report because it wasn’t their property, deputy advised.

October 9, 20146:28 p.m. Domestic disturbance, CPD

received 911 call, respondent stated he had broke their TV and was yelling in her face, he was getting aggressive, wanted him removed last night, it got physical, didn’t want it to happen again, CPD lost contact with respondent, tried to call back, no answer, advised deputy with informa-tion, deputy at Carmen Jct will be there shortly, deputy advised they have been separated for the night.

11:29 a.m. Motorist assist, Woods Co advised of vehicle in ditch east of Alva, unknown how far, CPD advised of vehi-cle in ditch east of Ingersoll, deputy and trooper advised, no injury, Woods Co ad-vised they have checked into our county and have not found it, trooper advised it is ¼ west of Ingersoll, deputy advised car is out of ditch.
