Importance of Grid application research

• Grid applications are very important to show the feasibility of Grid technology.

• The final goal of middleware research is to use Grid for real world application.

• Therefore, the primary concern is to develop an innovative engineering

methodology using Grid technology.

Where is middleware?

• There are many available software for Grid infrastructure.

• We can continue application research by using those software.

• We can contribute to their research since they also want applications for their

software.

CFD application on Grid

• CFD is very good application for Grid since it requires huge amount of

computing resource and relatively easy to exploit Grid infrastructure.

• Many Grid research includes CFD Grid in their project.

Where is the starting point of CFD application in N*Grid?

• We start from the high throughput CFD Grid.

• It is very powerful for design optimization and parametric study.

• We need to develop necessary algorithms as well as implementations.

• The final goal is to provide Grid Service to engineers and scientists

Construction of worldwide Grid test bed

• Connection of test bed with foreign institutes

Software for Grid infrastructure

• We are willing to be beta user of middleware, problem solving environment

and job scheduler.

• Preliminary Grid service will adopt those software

• Sharing operation issues and technical knowledge

• Running applications with common interest

• KISTI testbed infrastructure

• 80 node linux cluster dedicated for Grid testbed (at KISTI)

• 24 node linux cluster dedicated for Grid testbed (at PNU)

• 256 node linux cluster partially used for Grid testbed (at UOS)

• 48 node linux cluster dedicated for CFD application (at KAIST)

Porting CFD code to Cactus

• KISTI wants to develop truly Grid application.

• Cactus already has versatile core.

• Porting requires strong collaboration of staffs in KISTI and AEI.

• Proposed timetable

• Phase 1 : Port simple CFD code to Cactus framework(2-3 monthes)

• AEI will help porting procedure. KISTI will port CFD code.

• Phase 2 : Extend CFD code for realistic problem(TBD)

• AEI will add required core module. KISTI will implement CFD code.

• Phase 3 : Extend to integrated CAE environment.

• If both parties have interest in further development, it will be very good

change to deliver Grid technology to industry.

• KISTI wants to develop truly Grid application.

• GAT can be an ideal tool for this.

• Possible action item

• KISTI staffs can use GAT for their Grid application development

• N*Grid participants can use GAT.

• Feedback will be provided to GAT developer.

• Can KISTI contribute to GAT development (as a developer)?

• Does Gridlab have a particular application field in mind?

• What is scope of GAT?

• How application can exploit full benefits of GAT?

• Grid portal is very important topic in N*Grid project.

• KISTI is required to develop Grid portal itself for Grid infrastructure, as well as

API or other form of library for easy portal building.

• Possible action item

• KISTI can use Grid Sphere for their portal development.

• Feedback will be provided to Grid Sphere developer.

• KISTI contribute to Grid Sphere development as a developer.

• KISTI develop a customized module of Grid Sphere for a particular use.
