Abstract
NGNs will become reality only if weaddress how to move from the currentinfrastructure to the new. Some keyelements of achieving NGN while retainingthe value of existing investment will beaddressed. Another perspective on this isthe green field environment that existsfor new features and services and howNGN overlays can be used to providethese capabilities.

Introduction
Challenge: business case
It is nearly always less costly to deploy aservice-specific solution when introducing a
new service than to deploy a general purposesolution that has the potential to supportmultiple services
In the mid-1980s, operators were oftenreluctant to deploy SS7 because a businesscase based solely on replacing existingsignalling systems wasnt attractive
Deploying SS7 in every case turned out to be apositive and forward looking decision

USN is a concept and infrastructure which delivers sensedinformation and context to enable knowledge development
Sensor networks to date monitor physical or environmentalconditions, (e.g., temperature, sound, vibration, pressure,motion or pollutants) at various locations but as isolatednetworks. Networked sensor applications allow thedevelopment of intelligent information infrastructuresenabling new possibilities for consumers, publicorganizations, enterprises, government, etc.
USN applications and services integrate sensor networksinto a network infrastructure with applications such asindustrial or home automation, agricultural monitoring,healthcare, environment, pollution and disastersurveillance, homeland security, etc.

Widely deployed Best Effort IP (BE IP) networks providegenerally low-bandwidth legacy transport technologies andhigh access network aggregation ratios to provide internetconnectivity to as many customers as possible
High demand for new multimedia services (IP broadcasting,VoD, multimedia communication, etc.) means more capablenetworks are required
