THE VICTORIAN Coalition Government and the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club are join-ing forces to deliver record crowds at the Club’s two day au-tumn greyhound racing carnival later this month. The Minister for Racing, Denis Napthine says the opportu-nity to drive home in a brand new Mazda Miata MX 5 or a Mazda 2 and meet Hawthorn AFL premier-ship player, Jarryd Roughhead, will prove major drawcards at the ever-popular Sandown Cup meet-ings on 17 and 24 May. Dr. Napthine said the Coali-tion Government’s Raceday At-traction Program established to increase on-course attendances at racing, is assisting in putting on these two magnificent nights of racing, entertainment and the chance to drive home in a new car. “The two-day Autumn Carni-val features Australia’s richest race for stayers, the Group 1 San-down Cup,” Dr. Napthine said.

“This year, global greyhound sensation, Miata is being aimed at Cup glory. Wherever Miata has been racing she has been smash-ing the track record, and now she is lining up Sandown.” “And it just so happens one of Australia’s zippiest and most popular cars, the Mazda MX 5 is

is also called the Miata. “As a special promotion, ifMiata wins the Sandown Cup, onelucky spectator is guaranteed towin a Miata MX-5 valued at$52,000. But even if Miata is unsuccess-ful, someone on-course will stillwin a Mazda 2 valued at $17,000. “As well as that there will beentertainment for all ages, ticketgiveaways and further prizesworth up to $2,500, includingtravel vouchers,” Dr. Napthinesaid. Berwick Mazda Dealer Prin-cipal. Grant Handley was equallyexcited to be part of such an excit-ing program, “Miata is one of themost exciting and popular grey-hounds we’ve ever seen in Aus-tralia,” said Mr. Handley. “And the Miata MX 5 is oneof the world’s favourite sportscars. It’s a fantastic fit – experi-ence the thrill of one of grey-hound racings iconic races andyou could win a one of theworld’s iconic sports cars.”

Victorian Minister for Racing, Dr. Denis Napthine.

IT’S A BLUR is boxed to win Thursday night’s Group 1 Macro Meats Sapphire Crown final over 515 metres at Sandown. In a heat, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Weetbix came from box two and after set-tling fourth, quickly got to second before running down the flying Peggy May to score in a new PB 29.44, making it three from six at the trip.

Trained at Appin by Mark Azzopardi, the black chaser com-menced her career in Victoria, but her heat run was her first start on the track since September 2011.

Prior to her heat win, It’s A Blur had scored impressively at Wentworth Park in a very slick 29.79, and with her career stats showing 12 wins in 25 outings, she’s a high-class bitch.

With some very speedy front runners in this race, It’s A Blur should get a nice cart along, al-lowing her to unwind a strong finish and take home the $75,000 first prizemoney.

Carol Allen has quite a few things in her favour, and they are that she is trained by Graeme Bate, she’s a Sandown specialist with eight wins on the track with a PB of 29.29, and this field is probably easier than the opposi-

tion she regularly encounters at this venue.

In a heat, the black and white chaser came from box two, and after getting back in the field, finished resolutely to go down by three and three quarter lengths in 29.35, the fastest of the four that were run.

On face value, the box draw seems to have done the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Daphne Bale no favours, as she’s come up with the four.

But with the three that are drawn alongside her likely to lead her down to the first mark, she should get onto the fence, where she likes, and be poised to posi-tion herself into a good place that will set her up for her usual strong finishing burst, making her one of the real dangers.

It’s extremely hard to fault the dog that beat Carol Allen in the heat, and that’s El Brooklyn, who qualified for this race by leading throughout to score in the new PB time of 29.35, making it two from four at the trip.

The recent Warrnambool Classic winner has won 12 of her 17 starts to date and in most of those she led throughout.

The white and blue chaser has drawn six here, and in normal

circumstances with a formline like hers, would probably start a very short-priced favourite.

In the heat she got down to the first mark in 5.00, but the worry is that on her inside are Don’s Miss, who ran 5.01 to the first marker and in the three is her kennelmate, Peggy May, who got to the first peg in 4.98.

Assuming those two don’t force her to race very wide around the first bend, she’s cer-tainly one of the hardest to beat.

Peggy May is a brilliant chaser who recently beat Dyna Tron in the Group 2 Bendigo Cup final, as well as making the final of the Group 1 Australian Cup.

A daughter of Royal Riddle and Trinity County, she’s won 28 of her 47 starts, and two from three on the track.

Prior to lining up in box one in a heat, her PB was only 29.74, but after running splits of 4.98 and 18.72 in her most recent try, she was run down by It’s A Blur to register an over the line time of 29.61.

Based on her Sandown times, Peggy May probably needs to lead clearly if she’s to win this, but she is all class, so don’t un-derestimate her by any means.

ODIE FOR NOW said “bye bye” to his rivals when an effortless all the way winner of the Maurice Black-burn Grade 5 over 525 metres at The Meadows last Saturday night.

After lining up in box three as favourite at $1.90, the Kel Greenough trained chaser jumped smartly, and after giving himself a bit of room, led them to the first mark.

Taking the first split in 5.03, Odie For Now had three quarters of a length on Lektra Frazier on the rail, with a neck to Edith Bale on that

chaser’s outer. Odie For Now clapped the speed

on as they raced around to the back, and by the time he reached the sec-ond peg in 17.73 his lead was five lengths over Lektra Frazier, with a further three lengths to Simonova, then a gap to the others.

Up front Odie For Now was in a race of his own and raced to the Judge 11¾ lengths clear of Lektra Frazier ($13.90), with a length and a quarter to third placed Simonova ($8.30).

Odie For Now recorded Best Of Night 29.77 to score at his first try at the trip when taking his career tally to five wins in 10 starts.

The black and white galloper, a son of Big Daddy Cool and Shanlyn Lass, is owned by the You Can Do It Syndicate.

Handsome effort HANDSOME SHIRAZ scored an impressively in the AJS Corporation Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 600 metres.

Drawn in box four at $3.60, the

son of Bombastic Shiraz and Bar Crusher was last to leave the traps but dropped to the rail and had improved to be second last into the straight, where Select Octane was ahead.

Down to the post with a lap to travel, it was Select Octane in 9.10 ahead of Shiny Sudoku by three lengths, with Gold Affair Two third and Handsome Shiraz on the fence was now fourth.

Handsome Shiraz came to the outside and put the foot down to un-wind along the back and had just claimed the lead at the second check-point in 22.42, with Select Octane a head away second and a couple of lengths to Lasting Effect getting to third.

Handsome Shiraz quickly drew clear on the side and was full of run-ning to the post, scoring by five lengths over Select Octane ($27.20), with Johnny Ringo ($3.20 fav) a length and a quarter back in third spot.

A winner of 14 of his 61 starts, the brindle chaser registered 34.78 to tick-up his first win at his second try at the trip.

Handsome Shiraz is trained by Ben Divirgilio for Bev Kernick and Pam Stagg.

It’s a beautiful noise BEAUTIFUL NOISE was on song when took time honours over the 600 metres, running the new PB of 34.61 to score in the Macro Meats (No City Wins) Grade 5.

Coming from box three at $6.90, the Andrew Stewart trained galloper began reasonably and quickly turned the speed on to rail through and lead Mooncake into the straight the first time.

Getting down to the winning post the first time in 9.01, it was Beautiful Noise in charge by two lengths over Mooncake, with three lengths to Indy Son in front of Baurna Molly.

Getting around to the second marker in 22.10, it was Beautiful Noise making every post a winner, as he led Indy Son by three lengths, with Mooncake now third in front of Icebox.

Beautiful Noise was far too strong on the night and did it com-fortably to the line, saluting by three and a quarter lengths over Indy Son ($3.80), with Mooncake ($3.40 fav) a neck further away.

Beautiful Noise has now scored in 11 of his 50 attempts, whilst at the trip he’s had eight tries for three wins.

Owned by the A. & J. Stewart Syndicate, the black chaser is a son of Premier Fantasy and Pearlee Sur-prise. - Darryl Embling

THE LIST is starting to grow with young dogs from NSW who may contribute to the Group calendar over the next year, and Bye Bye Bucks has most certainly confirmed his status as one of our future elite following an emphatic victory at Wentworth Park last Saturday night. A new arrival at Free For All level, Bye Bye Bucks scored his sev-enth win at headquarters, and consid-ering he has just turned two years-old, he would be one of the youngest to reach this high achievers list. Competing in the Betfair Stake over 520 metres, Bye Bye Bucks was quickly into stride and was challeng-ing early leader, Bazmo’s Babe well before the first corner.

Leaving the straight Bye Bye Bucks surged to the front, while there was a bunching field behind him. The son of Bit Chili took off down the back and was carving out slick sections, so a sub 30-seconds run was always on the cards. Coming down the side Bye Bye Bucks increased his lead, with Bazmo’s Babe lying in second spot and defying a packing field just be-hind her. Streaking clear down the straight, Bye Bye Bucks was a dominant nine and three quarter lengths winner over a gallant Bazmo’s Babe in a new PB 29.73, with two lengths to third placed Ruby’s Lair. Bye Bye Bucks (x See Ya Senor-ita), trained by Ken Lewis, and in his relatively short career has had 26 starts for 12 wins and seven placings.

Prepared by Pauline Moran, Bazmo’s Babe (Run The Risk x Wez Da Picnic) has had 32 career starts

showing nine wins and 13 placings, whilst the Tracey Bryant trained Ruby’s Lair (Where’s Pedro x Ruby Red Lips) from 49 starts has pro-duced 11 wins and 18 placings.

MAKING IT three wins in suc-cession at the course, the Marie Bur-ton trained Captive led throughout to win the Evans & Son Jewellers Stake over 520 metres, clocking 29.91. The son of Collision has taken a real liking to the circuit, and even poor box draws haven’t stopped his climb up the grades. Exiting box five on this occasion, Captive was quickly into stride and was able to cross the speedy Kyl’s Me Girl by the first turn.

Heading into the back section Captive broke away with Kyl’s Me Girl, City Star and Celebration Time racing at tight quarters behind. Captive, a bold striding 32kg black dog, looked good coming down the side, as he put a winning gap on his rivals, whilst the battle was on for the placegetters cheques. At the judge Captive was a four and three quarter lengths winner over City Star, with a length to Celebration Time third. Captive (x Vizcaya) has now had 21 career starts for six wins and eight placings.

City Star (Laurie Banner x

Gazsha), trained by Lindsay Niccol, after 11 starts has collected four wins and four placings, whilst the Harry Sarkis trained Celebration Time (Bit Chili x Kowem Girl) to date has had 13 career starts for four wins and six placings.

PAULINE MORAN has had a memorable few months at headquar-ters, and the winners kept coming per medium of Total Sensation, who made it a treble when a strong winner of the Hotham Body Repairs Stake. The fawn chaser had to work hard for the victory and it appears that penny may have finally dropped for the 29kg daughter of Pure Octane, as to where to find the right spots in a

race. From the outset Total Sensation found the fence from box three, however, the leading pack was rac-ing tight, so patience and guile was needed. Leading the field was Big Mischief from box five, who was closely pressed by Goodwin Ben-nett and Gazmick Jet, while Total Sensation was camped on their heels awaiting the right mo-ment. That moment came just off the top corner where there was room for

a run, and Total Sensation quickly took the opportunity and had the race in her keeping turning for home. Over the concluding stages Total Sensation raced clear to win by three and a quarter lengths from I’m A Cannon in 30.37, with Gazmick Jet occupying third spot, one and a quar-ter lengths away. Total Sensation (x Total Fancy)

has now had 18 starts for seven wins and eight placings.

I’m A Cannon (Collision x Miss Nosey) from 24 starts has pro-duced six wins and seven placings for trainer, Wally Simmons, whilst Marie Burton prepares Gazmick Jet (Surf Lorian x Crazy Gazmick), who to date has had 38 starts for five wins and 15 placings.

Bye Bye Bucks is emerging as a big player in the coming months, and last Saturday night at Wentworth Park he ran 29.73, making it 12 wins from 26 starts for trainer, Ken Lewis.

RUSSELL DRUERY and his sister went to Albion Park last Thursday night hoping to land a winner with Leadfoot Katie.

Instead they are likely to come home with two winners.

Leadfoot Katie finished strongly in the home straight to win a 520 metres Fifth Grade and raced her way into the heats of the Bundaberg Cup.

The daughter of Train A Journey and Puzzle Lass scored by a length in 30.64, beating early leader, Sarah’s Ace, with two lengths to Our Don third.

It was her 10th victory in 40 starts. But Russell also had a huge grin

on his face after the previous race was run and won by Champagne Shell, as he has been asked to take the bitch for her breeding career.

Leadfoot Katie is on her way back after coming on season some months ago.

The Druerys gave her the full three months break to allow her to get over the season.

“We’ve given her a few runs at Bundy in the past few weeks to get her fit and also get her used to the track again,” said Russell.

“We’ll take her back now for the heats of the Cup on Saturday week.”

“The Big Dog products are really helping her.”

The early Bundaberg plan was forced upon Russell because Leadfoot Katie is top grade over sprints at the south-east Queensland tracks and she could go to Bundaberg in weaker com-pany in a bid to regain race fitness.

Russell and Jean are already planning the bitch’s breeding career, and she will join Champagne Shell at the Druery kennel at Churchable.

“Neil Thompson rang recently and asked if I was interested in breeding with Champagne Shell and kennel-mate, Finn’s Express,” said Russell. “I jumped at the chance to take them both when they are finished racing.”

Champagne Shell (Black En-forcer - Sparkelle Burn) may be fin-ished racing soon, according to trainer, Darren Titmarsh.

The bitch fought back gamely in the home straight to win in 30.62, scor-ing by three quarters of a length over the fast finishing Jackie Howe, with three-quarters to luckless third placed Velocity Mel.

It was her 14th victory in 112 starts, and 11 of those wins have come at headquarters.

“It might be a good time to call it quits with her,” said Darren.

“But how do you stop racing a Thursday night Albion Park winner?

“Neil is back from holidays next week, so we will discuss it with him then.” Anne will never tell AROUND HOME they simply call him “Shifty”.

But on the racetrack he’s known Never Tell, and his breeder, owner and trainer, Anne Southee reckons he’s a pretty smart youngster.

Never Tell got the change of luck he needed at Albion Park last Thurs-day night.

Never Tell (El Galo – Georgia Anne) came out of the five box in a 520 metres Novice and got all the luck he needed at the first turn when sev-eral rivals were involved in heavy trou-ble, and then raced into second.

He cleared right out in the home straight, winning by six and three quar-ter lengths over Alleged, who finished well, and there was a neck to Lucky So Far third.

Anne has been tearing her hair out trying to come to terms with the poor box draw and poor luck Never Tell has had in six of his previous seven starts.

“Bad boxes,” said Anne of the youngster, who had broken-in at Post-man’s Ridge with rave reviews.

“The only time he has drawn well,

he got the one at Ipswich three runs back and won in 30.53.”

Never Tell now will go on to the heats of the Young Guns at Ipswich.

Dam, Georgia Anne has since whelped a litter by Cosmic Rumble that is now 12 months old, and Anne let her miss when she was last on season.

“We could look at going to Give Me Five next,” she said. “Her litter sister, Lillyarna has had a litter to Give Me Five and produced the Albion Park Free For Aller, Tough As."

Anne refused to say why she had named the dog Never Tell.

“His kennel name is ‘Shifty’, so let’s leave it at that,” she said. Lismore is out YOU’D RECKON if a speedy bitch like Sobbing Destiny can lead throughout to win a Best 8 at Albion Park last Thursday night, she’d have to be a pretty good thing in a 5th Grade at Lismore in country NSW.

Not so, according to Michael Zam-mit, whose wife, Selena trains the daughter of Bond and Sobbing Queen for Peter and Helen Simpson.

That’s why Sobbing Destiny is

unlikely to head back to Lismore for the $10,000 on offer for the upcoming Cosmic Rumble 5th Grade series.

Zammit made this statement after Sobbing Destiny had bounced right back to her best to win the Best 8 over 520 metres in a fast 30.13.

She scored by two and a half lengths over Citi Hawk, with a neck to Special Premier finishing on well for third.

Mick handles Sobbing Destiny in most of her races.

It was her 14th victory in 37 starts, and Sobbing Destiny was returning to her best form.

“She is amazing,” said Mick. “Two runs back she was beaten into fourth in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade at Lismore, and here she is winning a Best 8 at Albion Park.”

“It shows us that she does not like the Lismore track”.

“The Cosmic Rumble is coming up for 5th Graders at Lismore, and ideally she should go into that series.”

“But what’s the use if she is not suited by the track.”

Sobbing Destiny is in the midst of a racetrack comeback.

“She went right off a few months ago and we decided to send her home to Peter and Helen for a spell,” said Mick.

“She ended up having a couple of spells there.”

“Her run when second to Isadel here on Monday was a very good run, and tonight she showed all her old dash to the first turn.”

Russell Druery and Leadfoot Katie is Bundaberg bound after taking out the ‘lucky last’ at Albion Park last Thursday, clocking 30.64.

THURSDAY NIGHT’S final of the Group 3 Breeders Plate at Angle Park looks a race in two, with My Little Star aiming for her ninth successive win when taking on Super Looper, who ran the best time of the night in last week’s semi-finals.

MY LITTLE STAR is impossible to go past with her eight wins in a row, especially after she came up with box one for the final. My Little Star won the Breeders Prelude 1 final in 30.15 and then went on to win the Breeders Prelude 2 Final in 30.10.

And if she takes out Thursday’s race, she’ll be the first chaser to make a clean sweep of the Breeders series of races since the inception of the

current format. Trained by Bosco Stamenkovic, My Little Star can lead or come from behind, and although she’s having her first start from the red alley, she looks tough to beat, with her 12 starts on the track so far resulting in 9 wins.

SUPER LOOPER made a big impression with his Best Of Night 29.73 semi-final win that backed-up

his 30.07 heat win for trainer, Nicole Price. A winner of 3 of his 6 starts on the track, Super Looper is improving with every race, and with a clear run, is capable of challenging My Little Star. Super Looper is extremely pow-erful but takes a few strides to warm up and he will need to stay clear of trouble from his seven alley in the final.

FOOTROT FOO is the second of three runners for Bosco Stamenkovic in the final, and he ran a brave race before fading into third place behind My Little Star in a semi-final. A dog with plenty of mid-race pace, with 3 wins from 9 starts on the

track, Footrot Foo has drawn nicely in two and if he can hold a forward place early, looks a good place chance.

BELFORD is the third of Bosco’s runners in the final and fin-ished third behind Super Looper after going up with the lids in a semi-final. Belford is yet to win on the track from nine starts, and although he has drawn nicely in box three in the final, he looks an outside chance of a place. DON’T PANIC ran a strong race to take second place in a semi behind My Little Star for trainer, Allen Wil-liams, and looks to be a strong place chance again in the final.

A winner of 1 of 4 starts at Angle Park, Don’t Panic has drawn box five

in the final and her chances will rely on staying clear of the wide running Turbo Tip in box four.

DAKOTA AMIGO gained a start as a reserve runner in the semis and made full use of that chance when finishing runner-up to Super Looper for trainer, Colin Simes. A winner of just 2 races from his 16 starts on the track, Dakota Amigo still goes into the final as the third fastest qualifier, and despite his poor draw of six, he looms a genuine top three chance.

TOORAK TANGO has plenty of experience on the track and won his way into the final by finishing fourth to Super Looper for trainer, Jan Jones. A winner of 3 of his 30 starts on the track, Toorak Tango will need to overcome box eight in the final, and although he looks one of the outsid-ers, his strength could see him run into a place.

TURBO TIP finished fourth to My Little Star to earn his place in the final for trainer, Ray Barkla, but with his habit of getting off the track after boxrise, he looks to have very little hope from his four draw. Yet to win on the track after 4 attempts, Turbo Tip has done a good job to make the final, so a podium finish looks remote. Reserves for the final are Bindi’s Angel for trainer, Rob Harnas and the luckless Izzy Mai for trainer, Don Turner. SELECTIONS MY LITTLE STAR Super Looper Footrot Foo Don’t Panic My Little Star heads into the final of the Breeders Plate as a pronounced favourite following a string of eight recent wins at Angle Park.

BUCKARINGA LAD showed once again why he shouldn’t be underesti-mated when he beat a strong field at Angle Park last Thursday night for trainer, Narvette Treloar. A $10.00 chance from box five in the Outback Jacks Bar & Grill at Gle-nelg Mixed 2nd/3rd/4th Grade, Buckar-inga Lad jumped safely before show-ing sizzling pace to cross the field and hold the lead over Dancing Jay Lo through the first turn. Getting away to lead by three lengths in the back straight, Buckar-inga Lad was showing his rivals a clean set of paws and reached the top turn still three lengths clear of Danc-ing Jay Lo. Rounding the final bend with his lead cut back to under two lengths, Buckaringa Lad had to dig deep to hold out the fast finish of Crazy Heart. The son of Brumby Lad and Ka-nowna Belle held on gamely, cross-ing the line three quarters of a length clear of Crazy Heart, equalling his personal best time of 30.00, with Dancing Jay Lo a close third. From 70 career starts it was the 19th win with 27 placings for Buckar-inga Lad.

DARREN BALE notched back to back victories at Angle Park last Thursday night when successful in the Slape & Sons Grade 4 for trainer, Shaun Matcott. Starting at $6.00 from box seven, Darren Bale jumped fairly and accel-erated quickly to cross the field and hold the early lead over Red Lesta through the first turn. Skipping away to lead by three lengths over Red Lesta in the back straight, Darren Bale was setting a fast pace and had extended his advan-tage to four lengths by the top turn. Rounding the final bend with Red Lesta cutting the gap back to three lengths, Darren Bale coasted to the line in no danger of defeat.

Despite losing late ground, the son of Go Wild Teddy and Zali Bale crossed the line one and a half lengths ahead of Red Lesta in a new personal best 30.01, with Snuggle Me holding down third place.

In-form pair dominate TWO SEMI FINALS of the Group 3 Breeders Plate were run at Angle Park last week and the first four run-ners past the post went through to this week’s final.

SUPER LOOPER turned the first semi-final into a one-act affair when he was victorious for trainer, Nicole Price. Nicely drawn in box one and starting as the $1.95 popular elect after his 30.07 heat win, Super Looper jumped nicely and hugged the rail to hold the early lead over Dakota Amigo through the first turn. Showing the way by a length over Dakota Amigo entering the back straight, Super Looper kicked away and rounded the top turn three lengths ahead. Further extending his lead through the final bend, Super Looper saved his best for last, as he careered away from Dakota Amigo in the home straight. The son of El Galo and Little Looper scored by nearly eight lengths to Dakota Amigo in a new personal best and Best Of Night 29.73, with Belford holding down third place.

MY LITTLE STAR brought up her eighth successive victory for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic when she won semi-final two. Starting at short odds of $1.85 from her good draw of two, My Little Star began sweetly then mustered speed to hold a clear lead over ken-

nelmate, Footrot Foo through the first turn. Racing into the back straight only a half length clear of Footrot Foo on the rail, My Little Star refused to let her kennelmate through and kicked back hard to be a length clear on the top turn. Racing three lengths clear of Footrot Foo through the final bend, My Little Star finished the race off well.

A daughter of Carlisle Jack and My Little Lady, she drew away along the home straight and passed the post eight lengths clear of Don’t Panic in a new personal best 29.99, with Footrot Foo fading into third place.

Woods wins again MISS WOODS racked-up her third win from her past four starts for trainer, Gino Grgurovic at Angle Park last Thursday night by landing the Yanmar Excavator Free For All over 731 metres. Sporting the pink vest in a five-dog field, Miss Woods ($2.00) came out running and showed good speed to easily lead Scooby Snack through the first turn. Leading by five lengths with a lap to run, and extending the margin to seven lengths passing the catching pen, Miss Woods maintained her pace down the back straight and ar-rived at the top turn still six lengths clear of Special Gem, getting through to second place. Rounding the final bend well in control of the race, Miss Woods coasted to the line under no pressure, with Kalden Petroni ($1.40 fav) run-ning into second place. By Miagi out of Scrumptious, she won by almost six lengths in 43.55, while Special Gem wound up third. Winners are grinners AT ANGLE PARK last Monday, Snuggle Me handed in a career best performance when the Chris Cotton trained chaser took out a Mixed 3rd/4th Grade. Donning the white singlet when $3.00 favourite, Snuggle Me jumped fast and raced to the lead through the first turn before defeating his rivals by nearly four lengths in equal Best Of Night 29.95.

DEADLY IMPACT equalled that effort at the same meeting when he won a Grade 5 event for trainer, Petar Jovanovic. Nicely drawn in box one and starting a short-priced $1.50 elect, Deadly Impact raced to the front early and led from pillar to post, scor-ing by just over five lengths in 29.95.

KALDEN AURORA scorched around the Gawler track last Tuesday and recorded best of day 30.67 in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade for trainer, Troy Murray. Favourite at $1.50 from the awkward seven alley, Kalden Aurora won the start and gave nothing else a chance, racing away to an 11¾ lengths victory over Princess Park’s 531 metres trip.

Speedy month PROMISING YOUNG-STER, Sometimes Speedy was rewarded for her good form during April when named as the latest SA Greyhound of the Month. Trained by Troy Murray, Somet imes Speedy had 5 runs during April for 3 wins, including

a 29.89 victory in a Juvenile Feature Final at Angle Park. At the end of the month, Some-times Speedy’s record stood at 5 wins and 2 placings from 8 career starts. Sometimes Speedy joins Joken Kihael, Johnny Will and Koombooy-ana Girl as Monthly Award winners so far this year.

JOHNNY WILL took out the April SA Run of the Month for trainer, Petar Jovanovic, after his

classy victory at Angle Park on Thursday, April 5. A $3.50 chance from box four in a Free For All, he commenced nicely and raced to the lead in the back straight before running away for a three and a half lengths victory in Best Of Night 29.64. It was the second time this year that Johnny Will has taken the award, having received it for a 29.63 effort at Angle Park back in February.

FORMER NSW DOG, Intense Sus-pense and local star, Silent Giggle emerged as the likely favourites for this week’s Vets Medley final over 599 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart.

Both won their respective first round heats over 599 metres, and they were equally as impressive when winning over the shorter trip of 461 metres last Thursday night.

The top eight points-scorers from the two rounds of heats made it through to the final, and Intense Sus-pense and Silent Giggle were the only ones to win both heats.

Each winner was awarded 11 points with eight for second and six for third, while fourth was allocated four points, reducing by one point through to seventh, with no points for last place.

Silent Giggle could not have been more impressive when winning a 461 metres heat, as she was only fairly away from box three but then mus-tered speed to be a length clear at the

340 metres boxes. Extending her advantage at every

bend, she went on to score by almost six lengths to Classic Camdale and Shanlyn Charlie.

The bitch has been in great form and trainer, Loretta Luttrell was thrilled with this latest effort.

“She just tries so hard and that’s why she is so good,” Luttrell said. “There’s no doubt she is right at the top of her game but she is going to have to maintain that form if she is to win the final.”

“Everything could hinge on the box draw, but if the gods are smiling on us in that department then she will be very hard to beat,” she said.

Intense Suspense has had only four starts in the state but his past two outings in the Medley series have shown him to be a serious chaser.

He won his first heat over 599 metres by seven lengths and clocked a splendid 34.69, whilst last Thursday night he was just as impressive, scor-ing by five lengths.

Intense Suspense, prepared at Brighton by Rod Ransley, showed his customary early brilliance to share the lead from box seven, with Shafah Tiger (8) matching the son of Where’s Pedro to the home turn.

But when Intense Suspense got serious, he left his rivals in his wake and cruised to the line a comfortable winner over Shafah Tiger, with Trin-ity Lad over two lengths away third.

Whilst Intense Suspense has shown good early speed, one of his biggest assets is his strength at the business end of his races, as was evi-denced by his most recent win that saw him extend his lead with every stride over the concluding stages of the race. Intense Suspense stopped the clock at 26.30, which was only frac-tionally slower that Silent Giggle, who covered the 461 metres in 26.23. ANOTHER to impress last Thursday night was Megastar Spargo from the Ian Callinan kennel. Megastar Spargo flew the lids from box four and gave nothing else a chance on his way to an impressive near six lengths win over Monahan Bully, with Hayley’s Reward a length and a half away third.

The Bombastic Shiraz and Miss Megastar product was now won six and been placed 10 times from 27

starts, but it has been his past handful of starts that have shunted him into the limelight. He was only run down in the last couple of strides by Silent Giggle in their first round heat over 599 metres, and there is

no doubt he is brilliant early, irre-spective of what box he draws, will ensure he leads in this Thursday night’s final.

Shafah Tiger deserves his place in the final with a second in each of his heats, and whilst the Leon Bra-zendale trained dog will start at big odds, he is definitely worthy of inclu-sion in trifecta and First 4 bets.

The Anthony Bullock trained Classic Camdale has been freshened for this series, with his second last week full of merit, and he would only have to take that form into the final to be a definite place chance at good odds.

Shanlyn Charlie impressed when winning his first-round heat, and he clinched a berth in the final with a handy third behind Silent Giggle over the 461 metres trip.

Shanlyn Charlie is better suited to the 599 metres journey and will be competitive in the final if he can avoid trouble early.

Wynburn Jet won a first round heat impressively, but only just scraped into the final with a fourth last week behind outsider, Whitney’s Curse (Where’s Pedro - Chinatown Babe).

Three dogs finished on 14 points, Hellyeah Kristy, Rocket Tadmore and Monahan Bully, to signal a toss of the coin to determine the eighth runner in the final, with the other two to fill the role of reserves.

Digger turns tables on recruit PUNTERS who put their faith in the in-form New Recruit to win the Invi-tation race in Hobart last Thursday night had their fingers burned by a quiet achiever.

November Digger has been going about his business like a thorough professional, but so many times punt-ers have let him get under their guards.

And last Thursday night he did it again.

At his previous start he finished out of a place behind New Recruit, and a start earlier he was second to the same dog.

But at this latest outing he did everything right.

The Ted Medhurst trained dog began brilliantly from box three, and after matching it with the well-backed Katsidis to the top turn, the Brighton based chaser forged clear.

New Recruit began only fairly from box six but made his way through the field unhindered to the top turn.

However, November Digger’s break was far too big and he went on to defeat the favourite by over a length, with the consistent Decem-brist a closing third ahead of Katsidis.

November Digger has won seven times from 22 starts with seven minor placings, with all of his wins scored on the Hobart U-bend circuit.

At Tattersall’s Park last week, Intense Suspense took out a Vets Medley Series heat over 461 metres in 26.30, making it six wins in 15 starts for the Rod Ransley trained chaser.

Silent Giggle at full stretch as she hits the line clear winner of a 461 metres Vets Medley Series heat in 26.23 for Loretta Luttrell.

INVICTUS BIGGS ran the new PB and BON time of 22.63 when an all the way winner of the 400 metres Free For All at Warragul on Tuesday, May 8.

Drawn in box three at $12.60, the Phillis Brown trained sprinter defeated Lead Act ($3.60) by two and a quarter lengths, with Mid Levels ($8.90) a length back in third spot.

A winner of three of his nine runs, Invictus Biggs is a son of El Galo and Invictus Cosmic, owned by the Invic-tus Kennels Syndicate.

First starter, Lil Grenade scored an easy win in heat four of the Bitches Maiden over 460 metres.

Wearing the pink vest as equal favourite at $4.10, the daughter of Elite State and Miss Bling led all the way

to score by seven and three quarter lengths over co favourite Rod’s Super ($4.10), with Carribean Girl ($8.40) a neck away third.

Lil Grenade, owned and trained by Nicole McRae, stopped the clock at 26.07.

Henry Stomper seemed to be at a generous quote of $16.90 in the first leg of the Quaddie, a 460 metres Grade 5.

Coming from box seven, the Victor Gay trained chaser scored by two and a quarter lengths over El Mu-latto ($1.80 fav), with Master Hugh ($15.10) picking up third money, a half length away.

Henry Stomper, who registered the new PB of 26.15, is a son of Talk’s Cheap and Crystalline, owned

by Carol Gay. Beltis Bale took time honours over the 460 metres by re-cording 26.01 after leading throughout to score in a Grade 5. The daughter of Give Me Five and Jasmine Bale came from box one as the popular elect at $2.20 to salute by a length and three quarters over Daintree Rocket ($7.00), with Gotta Be Jolly ($4.20) two and a quarter lengths fur-ther afield. B e l t i s B a l e , trained by Mark Del-bridge for Paul Wheeler, has now won 13 of her 43 runs.

THE EMERGENCE of the Allan Bryant trained Let’s Rock as a genu-ine Group chaser for the remainder of this year continued to grow substance following the red brindle chaser’s devastating win at Wentworth Park last Friday night. The dominant win in a flying 29.62 made it three wins from his past four Glebe appearances, and it appears for certain that all the early promise the 34kg son of Surf Lorian had shown his connections is about to

be displayed to the entire greyhound world. Let’s Rock is not the best of be-ginners, and this was again the case

in the Centrebet Stake, when from the red alley he stepped away in the sec-ond half of the field.

All the early pace came from the outside division, with the pink run-ner, Romba the quickest into stride. As the outside group carved across the field, Let’s Rock quickly gathered speed and motored through along the fence and was just able to hold out Romba at the first bend.

Upon entering the back straight Let’s Rock slipped away, and with

slick sections, put a big gap on his rivals in quick fashion.

Let’s Rock continued to power away over the concluding stages and when the judge blew full-time it was Let’s Rock by five lengths over Fancy Dean, one and three quarter lengths ahead of Young Snozz in third spot. The quality of the placegetters highlights just how much ability this winner really has, and Let’s Rock simply flogged them. Let’s Rock, from a January 2009 litter of Summer Bliss, to date has had 33 career starts for 10 wins and 13 placings.

It’s also pleasing to see the Bry-ants find a possible superstar, as they are the family behind the Winnebago Sponsorship at Dapto and put plenty of financial support into the sport. Grand campaigner, Fancy Dean was having start 62 for trainer, Wally Lutiger, with the Where’s Pedro and Sweet Fancy product having now posted 23 wins and 28 placings. whilst the Jason Mackay trained Young Snozz (Collision x Special Osti) has raced on 40 occasions for 13 wins and 17 placings.

EARLIER ON, the Michael O’Brien owned and trained Cool Zack Knee clocked a career best time at the Wenty Park when an all way winner in the Betfair Stake, register-ing 30.04. From box seven, Cool Zack Knee jumped smartly and had to gather all his early dash to stay in front of Bracelet runner-up, Cosmic Image, who was away well once again, this time from box two. Cook Zack Knee held the front

leaving the straight with Cosmic Im-age second, followed by Boggy Spit-fire. The order stayed the same until they reached the home turn, where some late swoopers appeared.

But Cook Zack Knee was never threatened and down the home run-ning was able to hold out Cosmic Image and score by two and a quarter lengths, with Just Joking running on to take third prize, a further one and a half lengths away. The formline was very strong in this race, as all placegetters have only missed a place once in their past 15 appearances combined. Cool Zack Knee, by Big Daddy Cool x Be My Girl, overall has now had 39 career starts for 13 wins and 13 placings.

Cosmic Image (Miagi x Closing Conquest), a bridesmaid at her past three city efforts for Norm Becroft, has had 28 starts overall for five wins and 11 placings, whilst the James Zahra trained Just Joking (Big Daddy Cool x Key Exit) has missed a place just once in 15 career starts, having produced four wins and 10 placings.

Sapphire rep BEST OF LUCK to trainer, Mark Azzopardi, who leads It’s A Blur to the boxes in Thursday’s Sapphire Crown final at Sandown Park.

The daughter of Bombastic Shi-raz and Weetbix has clocked 29.52 at Wentworth Park, and none of her Sapphire rivals would touch that time. If the 30kg girl can miss early trouble she will be powering home, giving the Premier State a chance of collecting some southern cash.

Let’s Rock shapes as a good middle distance performer following a strong victory in the Free For All, running the 520 metres trip in 29.62 for Allan Bryant and the crew at Nowra Hill.

FABREGAS picked up the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the Westernport MUA Social Club Maiden Final over 515 metres.

Drawn in box two at $4.30 after winning a heat on debut in 29.89, the David Hirst trained youngster was last out and quickly dropped over to the fence.

Ti Amo Rosa came out running and led them down to the first split in 5.06, with Fabregas coming through on the inside to be second ahead of Cintiarna.

Fabregas put the foot down out of the straight and quickly raced to the front, speeding out to a four lengths lead at the back corner in 18.92, with Where’s Ray moving to second past Ti Amo Rosa.

Fabregas never looked like being reined-in over the final stages and greeted the Judge four and three quarter lengths ahead of Sretror ($2.40 fav), with Where’s Ray ($22.60) three and a quarter lengths further afield.

Fabregas, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch, owned by Paul Westerveld, returned the new PB time of 29.73. Hawke atones CAPE HAWKE atoned for his unlucky run in the Warrnambool Classic final by taking out heat one of the Berwick Mazda Harrison-Dawson

over 515 metres. Coming from box three as fa-

vourite at $2.50, the son of Where’s Pedro and Viva Odessa began smartly and led them to the first checkpoint.

Going past the marker in 5.02, it was Cape Hawke by a length over General Destini, with a neck to third placed Dyna Steal on his outer.

Cape Hawke had a wing on every paw around to the back, getting there in 18.67, but General Destini wasn’t letting him get too far ahead and was three lengths down, with Adam Me-way on the fence now in third possie, two lengths down.

Cape Hawke stuck to his task resolutely over the concluding stages, holding out General Destini ($3.10) to score by a length with Adam Me-way ($12.50) four and a half lengths further astern.

Cape Hawke, trained by Jamie Ennis for T. Wales and G. Manning, posted the BON time of 29.32 to make it three wins in eight tries at the trip, whilst overall the black chaser has won 17 of his 30 starts.

Cup trial YOWYEH continues to improve over the staying trip and turned in an ex-cellent Cup trial by taking out the RSN Sandown Cup 24th May Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 715 metres in 42.08.

Sent to box two at $6.00, the An-gela Langton trained stayer was away reasonably and was a close up second on the fence at the first mark, where Lady Grey had taken the lead in 6.10, with the early leader, Sequoia now third.

Yowyeh railed through to take over and passed the Judge a lap out in 15.73 holding a three lengths lead over the wide tracking Lady Grey, with Czar around the outside of Wandy Neg getting to third.

Yowyeh was still the pilot through the far turn, pausing the timer at 30.56, and his lead was five lengths over Lady Grey, with a fur-ther three lengths to Karanji moving into third spot past Wandy Neg.

Although getting tired at the end, Yowyeh held out the gallant Lady Grey ($12.70) by a head in a photo finish, with the unlucky Granduer ($1.50 fav) flashing home for third, three lengths in arrears.

Yowyeh, a son of Premier Fan-

tasy and Que Sera Sera, is owned by the Champagne Syndicate.

The white and black half-miler has now scored in 18 of his 56 career runs, whilst on the track at the trip this was his first win in five attempts. Hat-trick in final GARRICK BALE brought up the hat-trick of wins when an impressive winner of the Sandown website Grade 5 Final over 515 metres.

Drawn in box four at $3.20, the son of Go Wild Teddy and Dyna Celeste was away smartly and had more early speed than his rivals, lead-ing to the first peg.

Taking the split in 5.07, it was Garrick Bale by a length over Allen Bullman, with Battina Bale third on the inside, ahead of Sisco Hero.

Garrick Bale had the speed on and raced around to the back in 18.87 with a four lengths lead over Battina Bale doing the serious chasing, while Allen Bullman was a close third.

Despite tracking away from the rail, Garrick Bale was in no danger of defeat and made his way down the running to score by four and a half lengths over Battina Bale ($12.60), with Proven Chevy ($28.20) getting third money, three lengths back.

Garrick Bale recorded the new

PB of 29.48 to make it four wins in five goes on the track, as part of his eight firsts in 12 outings overall.

The black chaser was the second of two winners for owner, Paul Wheeler, as well as being the second leg of a winning double for trainer, Andrea Dailly.

Former track record holder, Cape Hawke came out running and sizzled through the splits, clocking 5.02 and 18.67=B in his one length heat win, running a super slick Best Of Night 29.32.

El Brooklyn has certainly inherited the early speed of her famous sire, El Galo. The white and blue bitch hummed early, hitting the first split in 5.00, then registering an 18.67 equal Best back split before crossing the line with nearly four lengths to spare in a new 29.35 PB. Pictured are members of the Thompson clan, Luke, Holly, Jason and Seona, with Zac Taylor on the end.

Studmaster, Paul Westerveld was trackside to watch Fabregas salute in the Westernport MUA Social Club (GOBIS) Maiden Final. The 19 months old youngster, a black daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Wicked Witch, gave her young trainer, David Hirst, his first city winner.

Eye of the tiger: Wy Yung Tiger was back to his best with a new 29.38 PB in his respective heat win. The big fawn 35.5kg sprinter challenged for the lead in the run to the first bend and then proved too strong for his opposition.

Robyn Inger gave the Bate kennel a chop-out when she handled David Bale, who handled the eight alley in his near BON 29.33 heat win.

It’s A Blur produced the run of the night when she stormed home to run down Bendigo Cup winner, Peggy May in 29.44. Missing the start from the two trap, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Weetbix found herself in fourth place on the first bend but chased her heart out to eventually reel-in Peggy May approaching the home bend. She then careered away for a near three lengths win. Pictured with the sprinter is Appin mentor, Mark Azzopardi and Karen Pitt.

Don’s Miss certainly came of age when she blasted out of the five alley and scored a runaway 29.54 heat win. Raced and trained at Mount Moriac by Kevin Ward, the Premier Fantasy and Miss Bradman speedster is blessed with early pace, registering sectionals of 5.01 and 18.91 in her second win over the 515 metres trip.

A real head-bobber THE LIZRENE CLASSIC turned into a real head-bobber, a la Bonecrusher and Our Waverly Star’s Cox Plate. Miata had to work awfully hard on the inside to beat the wide-tracking Thrilling Brat in probably one of the hardest goes we’ve seen for quite a while in a distance race.

What it has done of course is send out the message that Miata can be beaten.

Oh sure, she’s been rolled three times in her 26 career runs, she’s not unbeaten like Black Caviar, but certainly her previous 13 runs saw her untested.

In fact, those 13 victories saw the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Win-some Bluebird score by an aggregate 119½ lengths, or an average of 9.19 lengths per victory.

Apart from when she was beaten, this head victory is the closest any grey-hound has ever got to the Western Aus-tralian champion.

As I keep saying, they’re not ma-chines, and there’s also the fact that some tracks are not as kind to some dogs as others.

Still, having said all that, you can’t do any more than win, can you?

And when it comes to staying races, Miata has yet to be beaten in anything beyond 530 metres. Sister, anything you can do… FOR THOSE who need their memories jogged, Amelia Bale and Amity Bale are litter sisters, being by Sonic Flight from Evonne Bale. On the track, Amity Bale was better performed than Amelia Bale, not that she was any slouch.

Amity Bale started 72 times for 31 wins and $275,195 in stakes.

She picked up four Group 2 staying wins, as well as a Group 3 staying victory, plus she went around in a Group 1 Mel-bourne Cup final, running sixth.

She was a very good sprinter that turned into a great stayer.

Amelia Bale raced 42 times for nine wins and $51,225 in prizemoney.

She was a pretty good sprinter who

ran second to Queen Lauryn in the Group 1 Sapphire Classic and was switched to staying also.

She only had a handful of starts over the long ground, but did score at both The Meadows and Sandown.

Both were retired to the breeding barn, and it is very interesting looking at their offspring. Their offspring AMELIA BALE paid a visit to Bartrim Bale for her first litter… and what a litter that has been.

It produced Bekim Bale and Heston Bale for starters, and throw in Adelle Bale, Defrim Bale, Fyna Bale and Irma Bale and that’s a pretty good lot of pups to have flying the banner.

That litter was whelped in October 2009, whilst Amity Bale’s first litter was whelped in April 2010, and they were to Go Wild Teddy.

Battina Bale, Gordon Bale and Gus Bale are all above-average, but it’s Imry Bale that’s the star of the litter.

Taking on older and more experi-enced chasers, he made light work of the Bill Collins Memorial, thus stamping him-self as a real star in the making.

Already a winner of 14 of his 19 starts, it was interesting to note that he was the only chaser from Graeme Bate’s kennel entered for the Western Australian Derby.

Did I hear someone say Graeme only needed one to win it?

Is this déjà-vu or something? Wasn’t it a year ago that Graeme

sent Allen Elroy over there for the same race?

I seem to recall that he won that, and a couple of “handy” youngsters finished down the track in that race, namely Dyna Tron and Dyna Bert.

Actually, there was a good reason why Imry Bale was heading West when a lot of us thought he’d be running in the Harrison-Dawson.

Apparently there was some sort of a muck-up with his entry and as a last min-ute thought, his trainer put him in the Derby.

If he wins it then it’ll be a stroke of good luck for sure.

Anyhow, at the moment I think Ame-lia Bale has the better score on the board as far as breeding goes, but that could change as Amity Bale’s pups start to mature. A great drink DON CHENDO is a brand of Tequila, as well as being a top-flight greyhound. I can’t recall the last time I drank tequila, but I do recall the last time I saw Don Chendo race.

It was in the Bert Bryant Memorial, and he won.

In fact, it was the 24th time he’d won a race.

However, there is a statistic that ac-tually highlights that Don Chendo is much better than even his form reads.

It’s the fact that from 68 career starts, he’s worn the yellow vest 21 times.

Mind you, he has a pretty good re-cord from the “squeeze” box, and that’s seven wins and four seconds.

Don Chendo, who won the Group 3 The Dawson last year, is back again this year to try and defend his crown.

The Len Ketelaar trained chaser goes into the $75,000 to the winner Group 2 event with $186,485 against his name. Group girls and boys SANDOWN have two sprint Group races running simultaneously and they are the Harrison-Dawson and the Sapphire Crown.

The Sapphire Crown is a Group 1 race over 515 metres and it is for the Best 32 female chasers entered.

The Harrison-Dawson is also over 515 metres but it’s a Group 2 race and it’s open to the Best 32 male chasers en-tered.

Both races carry $75,000 first prizemoney.

On the same night as the final of these two races are heats of the Group 1 Sandown Cup over 715 metres.

This race has $100,000 up for grabs to the winner and I’m hoping we’ll get at least 32 entries to make it four heats.

But back to the first two events, and it gives the open class chasers a nice chal-lenge to pick-off one of these events.

Even though at first thought it looks easy, but compacting the 32 best means the heats are tough, and even though it’s not sudden-death, it’s still going to take a top effort to qualify.

And you can bet your boots they’ll be crackerjack fields for the finals. Speaking of money SPEAKING of money, Sandown and Group races, the big announcement is that Sandown’s Group races are going up in prizemoney. It was bound to happen, seeing as Victorian prizemoney has just received a $6 million boost.

The Melbourne Cup is now a half a million dollar race with first prizemoney of a whopping $350,000.

The Sandown Cup will increase to $125,000 to the winner, and in another coup for the stayers, the Bold Trease will increase to $100,000.

The two Group races that are cur-rently on, the Harrison-Dawson and the Sapphire Crown are to go to $100,000 apiece.

As I facetiously said some time back, these elite chasers that have worked so hard to reach half a million dollars could be passed by one dog winning just one feature race.

Well, at the moment they’ll need just two to go to the top of the tree, the Egg and the Melbourne Cup should do it! Who will it be? THE TALK doing the rounds at the mo-ment is… who will be the next super sire?

A lot of people are speculating on some of Paul Wheeler’s stud dogs be-coming the next great sire.

Possibly one that has gone may have been that dog, and I’m talking about Bar-trim Bale.

He had the huge advantage of being out of Gold Rush Bale, but he of course is no longer here.

However, we now have another of Gold Rush Bale’s sons at stud and that’s Dyna Tron.

Some see him, being by Collision, as the telling factor, and a lot of good judges seem to think that he’ll be the one.

Of course, we do have Bartrim Bale’s sons, Bekim Bale and Heston Bale, and they have the extra bonus of being from Amelia Bale; that’s considered a huge plus too.

And then there’s Radley Bale. Dyna Lachlan is another, and he’s

got his first pups hitting the track. Besides the Wheeler dogs, is there

another potential super sire? We have El Grand Senor, and if he

can produce pups half as good as him-self, then he’ll certainly make a name for himself.

Could one of the dogs out there al-ready producing winners be the one to step up?

I just checked the AGRA stud dog rankings and the Top 10 is interesting, to say the least.

From 1 to 10 we have Bombastic Shiraz, Collision, Where’s Pedro, Halluci-nate, Big Daddy Cool, Spiral Nikita, Primo Uno, Premier Fantasy, Mogambo and Brett Lee.

Making up the dozen are Bartrim Bale and Knocka Norris.

Well, that certainly puts Mogambo in good stead, as the others are old, dead, overseas or no longer standing.

The sons of Bombastic Shiraz are probably in the running to be heir-apparent, and we have Velocette at 14 and Bit Chili at 16.

Some of the other leading contingent now have sons at stud too, and Where’s Pedro, who’s at 3, is the sire of Mogambo, who is at 9.

But we have a few other dogs that have retired over the last couple of years that may make their mark, Mantra Lad and High Earner being a couple that come to mind. Heads up Hertz I GAVE a heads-up to Allen Hertz here a couple of weeks back, and after missing out on qualifying for the Warrnambool Cup, fronted up in the Stan Lake Memo-rial the following week.

After drawing the blue, punters showed faith that he could bounce back, and as the even money elect, he scored a strong come from behind win in 25.31.

It was also a bit quirky that he got the mention he did, as it pre-empted a bit of research into the WA Derby. Perverse irony MOST greyhound folk look after their dogs really well.

Sadly, a lot of us haven’t looked after ourselves nearly as well.

Like a lot of people from my era, I smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish; two vices I’ve now given up.

Of course, like most of us that quit the fags, I’ve gained a few pounds.

That’s probably in part owing to two things my step-father always used to say.

“No matter what you do, as long as you eat well and get plenty of exercise, you’ll be fine.”

Well, I can say I’ve always done that, as I’ve always had three good quality meals a day.

And having trained dogs for many years the old-fashioned way, I’ve certainly had plenty of exercise.

Anyhow, as I said at the start, most of us have looked after our dogs pretty well.

We’ve fed them well and exercised them… that is what we did and still do.

And here’s another little rule an old trainer said to me.

He never used scales; he used his eye and his judgement.

“If the dog looks too fat, feed him less.”

“If the dog looks too thin, feed him more.”

Oh, he had other rules too, related to exercise.

“If he doesn’t look fit enough, walk him further.”

“If he looks too fit, walk him less.” Pretty easy rules to follow. Mind you, this chap was quite suc-

cessful as a trainer, in fact, he was doing it full-time long before the thought of full-time trainers came into vogue.

I always thought we had plenty of commonsense, and if we used that we’d do okay.

And as for training dogs, it still boils down to two basics, doesn’t it… feed them well and give them plenty of exer-cise? Hover yo-yo I DON’T know how many of you saw a news story on a hover concept car made in China by VW. What a fantastic piece of engineer-ing; can’t wait until they make the station wagon version, it’d be ideal for carting a dog or two around.

Cheap as chips to run, great for the environment, and looking at the clip in the story, loads of fun to drive. Your Say “Old Trainer” with, “Do you think dogs have improved a real lot in say the past 25 years, or are conditions better?” A bit of both: Dogs are certainly faster but conditions have improved too, although look at a track like Ballarat that was in service 25 years ago. Times there in that quarter of a cen-tury came down on average by at least eight lengths. The average time 25 years ago on the 450 would have been around 26.25, whilst up until the track was closed I would say 25.75 would be the average. “Pete Punter” asked, “Do you think divi-dends are smaller now?” Might be more winners, perhaps? “Mark My Words” with, “Do you know much about the greyhound Loose Bolts, who is now in Western Australia?” He’s a pretty strong dog with a win over Alpe D’Huez, and he gave Kilta-non Skye and Echelon a run for their money. I’d say he’ll do well over there. (He won first up at Mandurah). “Grumble Gutz” again, “Too much money for one race I say, too much; like manure, it needs to be spread out to be effective.” Hmmm, money is like manure, I like that one, I always thought it was made round to go ’round....hehehe. This week’s Teaser SOME Stud Dogs end up with their sons at stud; see if you can work out who these dogs are, and the bonus is, who is their father? 1. Pricey Wallets 2. Comic Fiches 3. Hit Green Trunk 4. Custom Lieu 5. Gee Five Vim 6. Showered Rep 7. For Love 8. Brag Letter ANSWERS NEXT WEEK Last week’s answers Yes, it is possible to win more than one Maiden.

We have Maiden Series where there are heats, semi-finals and a final, and all are called “Maidens”. So that’s three for starters. Of course, we used to have hurdle races, so you could win a flat race Maiden and a Maiden over the jumps.

And there’s still Coursing conducted, so you can win a Maiden there as well.

Kennel Cough update WINTER is always a high-risk time for kennel cough, and indeed over recent weeks there has been some Kennel Cough around.

Kennel Cough is caused by three principal pathogens, two being viruses, parainfluenza and adeno virus and the other a bacteria, bordetella.

There are vaccines available for these organisms.

However, it is important to realise that not all vaccines are equal, and this is especially true in the case of Kennel Cough.

Not all vaccines are 100% effective, especially killed vaccines.

Killed vaccines are inactivated, and it is remnant proteins that stimulate a host response after challenge the immune response from a killed vaccine is weak and short lived.

It has a poor memory effect, and if the animal is challenged with the disease six to nine months later then the immunity will have largely dissipated.

For respiratory infections, the mode of entry is usually through the nasal or oral cavity. The type of immunity that counters this insult is called mucosal immunity.

Injectable vaccines, whether inactivated or not, are not good at stimulating this type of immunity.

There is available an intranasal live vaccine for Kennel Cough disease.

This type of vaccine is the most effective preventative, and it can even be used in the face of an outbreak, where the milder form of the disease in the vaccine competes for the real estate in the back of the throat with the wild disease.

Dogs should be free of infection and stress at the time of vaccination, and for a number of days afterwards.

A run will cause sufficient stress to release cortisol and dampen the immune response to a vaccine.

A useful rule of thumb is not to race or trial a dog three days before or three days after a vaccine

In a population of dogs, the more animals vaccinated against a particular disease then the less likely there is to be incidents of that disease.

A few years ago a crippling bout of Kennel Cough closed down greyhound racing across the state of Tasmania.

No accurate figures or tests are

available, but the likely scenario is that the immune status of the population dropped below a critical level, allowing the disease a free run through a largely unprotected population.

It is often said that Kennel Cough vaccine is not completely effective.

There are reasons why we have this perception, for example the state of the dog at the time of vaccination, the method of delivery or the type of vaccine.

Most veterinary clinics persist with the injectable form of Kennel Cough vaccine, which only weakly protects fifty out of every hundred dogs, whereas the nasal vaccine protects ninety-eight out of a hundred.

The reason for this is quite simple, most dog breeds are not as docile as the greyhound, and introducing a syringe up a pet’s nose often triggers a lunge and a snap, added to that, for domestic dogs who live in a family unit, Kennel Cough is a very low risk disease.

For racing greyhounds, Kennel Cough can be a killer, often leading to secondary pneumonia.

It is wise to ask your vet for the best, and go for the proven preventative that protects 98% of dogs, Bronchi-shield III.

THE much-awaited Aurecon Report, com-missioned and financed by $50,000 grants from the State Government and the Wangaratta Council, has certainly raised a few eyebrows.

The draft of the South Wangaratta Urban Renewal Strategy, highlighted by a front page spread by the Wangaratta Chronicle’s Steven Burke, insisted that returning greyhound racing to Avian Park was “unviable”.

The study, which was pushed by the Racing Minister, Denis Napthine, was to look into the feasibility of returning grey-hound racing to the north-east venue after it was closed down by GRV and the La-bour Government in 2009, then de-commissioned the following year.

Excerpts from the report are not flat-tering, but in the view of GOTBA Presi-dent, Geoff Collins, “very lopsided”.

Racing Minister, Dr. Denis Napthine, after consulting with the Save Wangaratta Dogs (SWD) committee earlier this year at the Wangaratta Cup harness meeting, requested the group find an adequate template design that would allow a grey-hound track to be constructed inside the current trotting track.

Further follow-up with the Racing Minister at the opening of the new Lords Raceway circuit at Bendigo in April saw the GOTBA, in conjunction with the SWD group, present him with an overview of a template that would allow a circuit similar to Sandown Park to fit inside the trotting track.

According to the Wangaratta Chroni-

cle, the Aurecon report has suggested that costs and track configuration are pinpointed as the reasons for the “unviable” recommendation.

However, former WGRC GM, Neville Tait said he couldn’t understand why a track couldn’t be built exactly where the old one used to be.

“We don’t believe the consultants have been provided with the right infor-mation.”

“It was always our argument that we could put the old track into that spot - it was the safest track in Victoria.”

“We’ll be lobbying the Racing Minis-ter, Denis Napthine and Tim McCurdy (MLA, Murray Valley) and requesting a meeting with the GRV about the informa-tion that was provided to the consultants.”

GOTBA President, Geoff Collins questioned the credibility of those who had input into advising the Aurecon con-sultants on the possibility of attempting to slot four of the largest U-turn greyhound tracks in the state, Bendigo, Geelong (outside track), Warragul and Warrnam-bool inside the Wangaratta harness track.

“It is common knowledge that lack of space is the main issue in finding a tem-

plate to fit inside the Avian Park harness circuit.”

“The two premier tracks in Victoria are The Meadows and Sandown Park, and both of those tracks could fit inside the existing harness racing facilities.”

“If Aurecon looked at Geelong as a possible plan, why didn’t they consider the inside circuit when they realised the outside circuit was too big, as we’re sure (GOTBA) it would fit inside, as it has the same dimensions as Sandown and Mead-ows.”

Collins further added, “Why hasn’t the Aurecon report looked at Sandown or The Meadows, and why didn’t those who advised Aurecon mention this possibility?”

“Even Healesville was mentioned. Fair dinkum, there was no chance Healesville would fit inside, as being a straight track it is the longest in Victoria, and would be lucky to fit inside some of the horse racing tracks.”

“What amazed us (GBOTA) is that a bunch of blokes knew immediately which track would fit inside the trotting track, but a large multinational global company didn’t.”

“We weren’t consulted and neither was the SWA.”

Former Wangaratta Club President, Neville Burgan was also dirty on the out-come of the report.

“I met with the Wangaratta Mayor and the CEO and asked them whether the council was in favour of the dogs coming back to Wangaratta.”

“They were in favour and supportive but wanted to know whether we could co-exist with other sporting bodies that wanted to use the infield and surrounds of Avian Park.”

“I assured them that we were amica-ble and the area was big enough to cater for a multitude of sporting groups, and we had also been ‘user friendly’ prior to our closure.”

“There’s enough room there to have 10 sports mobs there.”

“And apart from Sandown Park and The Meadows designed tracks fitting inside this precinct, The Gardens circuit in Newcastle would also fit too.”

GRV CEO, John Stephens provided OTL with the following: The GRV Board has deliberately adopted a ‘sit on the fence’ stance since the Wangaratta Rural City Council, in conjunction with the State Government, appointed Aurecon to pre-pare an Urban Renewal Strategy Master Plan for South Wangaratta.

However, GRV understood that (a) the Master Plan that would guide the future use and development of South Wangaratta and (b) the Avian Park Race-way was one of four key sites to be con-sidered in the Master Plan.

In late 2011, GRV declined to partici-pate in a “South Wangaratta Urban Re-newal Strategy Workshop” on the basis that the GRV Board would hold no defi-nite position (one way or another) in rela-tion to Avian Park until such time as rec-ommendations from the Master Plan could be considered (that is - until they were published ).

GRV involvement in the Master Plan has thus been limited to the supply of requested information about completed GRV tracks and facilities – it has not in-volved a view “one way or another” about Avian Park Raceway.

Aurecon has now presented a DRAFT Master Plan to the Wangaratta Rural City Council.

The Aurecon Master Plan recommen-dations will be discussed at the upcoming GRV Board meeting of June 4, 2012.

OTL is at a loss as to the recommen-dations of the Aurecon study.

Surely a little tinkering with the old Avian Park design, which catered for 403, 474 and 650 metres racing inside the current harness track set-up, would give greyhound trainers another option to race their chasers.

And you can bet it won’t cost $12 million. Hot kids THE siblings from the Bombastic Shiraz and Pure Elle December 2009 litter are starting to forge a reputation for them-selves.

Mention was made in OTL recently about the exploits of Audacious Elle and Soda Boy taking out the first two places in the Topcat Video Puppy Classic at Traral-gon’s Glenview Park.

Eight of the nine member litter have hit the track, with Soda Lee yet to make her debut.

Lochinvar Curl is the latest member of the illustrious group to make headlines with a five lengths 29.30 record breaking run at The Gardens on May 8 his biggest claim to fame in his short 10-start career.

That all the way record breaking vic-tory was on the end of a five win se-quence at the Newcastle venue and por-trays the black sprinter as a very hot pros-pect.

Another littermate, Lochinvar Rip, owned by Heather Gordon and trained by Robert Smith, who’s raced in the same interests as Lochinvar Curl, has also shown a tendency for The Gardens, notching four wins over the sprint trips of 400 and 515 metres.

David Schofield, one of New Zea-land’s premier trainers, also has two of the litter in his in his care.

Lochinvar Elle won five races on the trot at Cambridge earlier this year, whilst Lochinvar Onyx, a winner at The Gardens prior to his departure to the Shaky Isles, has yet to open his New Zealand account.

Janet Cottrell, who is best known for landing a Victorian Greyhound Of The Year with Quick Pulse many years ago, is responsible for the training of Arising, who has impressed in four very good wins on the Victorian provincial circuit, including a runaway last start 11 lengths win at Bendigo in a sizzling BON 28.01 on May 4.

That hollow victory shaved .08 off Miss Louise’s previous track record of 28.09.

Audacious Elle and Soda Boy have more than held their own against their own age group in restricted races and have tallied 14 and 13 wins respectively for their kennels.

Agent Smokey, a red and fawn bitch from the litter, has only had the two starts for Seaspray trainer, Barry Harper, win-ning on debut at Sale in 25.37 and pos-sesses plenty of early pace, running a slick BON 5.19 early in that Maiden win.

Raced by the C And O Alcock Syndi-cate, this sparingly raced bitch will be a valuable breeding barn asset, along with other female members of the litter.

The litter is just two short of 50 wins to date and rate as good as any that have hit the track in the past six months. Friend for life PHIL YOUNG is deeply indebted to Cran-bourne trainer, Nicole Lund and local vet, Des Fegan.

The relationship has blossomed since Phil’s sprinter, Phildavian entered Nicole’s kennels.

“He’s much happier and settled, and this is reflected by his recent form.”

Phildavian is currently on a roll, win-ning six of his past seven starts, with four of those victories earning BON perform-ances.

Originally raced with two of Phil Young’s mates, the Bombastic Shiraz and Ocean Song sprinter was spurned by the two partners, advising Phil late last year that they didn’t think the three year old could hold his own any more and wanted out.

Phil insisted that he would come good and eventually bought the remaining shares.

“He loves the TLC he gets from Nicole, and she has definitely turned his fortunes around.”

“There’s a special bond between the pair and Nicole’s partner, Kelvin, and their daughter, Bilynda also contributes to the relationship.”

“I have nothing but the utmost re-spect for Nicole, as she’s kind, caring, loving and considerate.”

“Phil is lucky to have found a home and a trainer of this quality.”

“When he first arrived at Nicole’s kennels, and didn’t fire at his first few starts, she told me that he didn’t look right, and took him to Des Fegan’s clinic.”

“Des is a truly talented man and de-tected a small tendon injury.”

“He performed a small operation and after recuperating, returned to the track a much better dog.”

Phil’s original $3,000 outlay is insig-nificant in this little story, as it displays a different side to the role of an owner who genuinely loves his champion. Track record ANGLE PARK’S 388 metres track record went under again.

The popular short scamper continu-ally gets shaved with practically every meeting, and the latest record holder is Flash Of Passion ( Black Enforcer - Rox-anne Passion), who scooted around the circuit in 22.04 on May 9. Another heads east DUAL GROUP winner, Paddy’s Flame is set to jet off to the Orient.

The dual Group winner, successful in the 2008 Hudson Pacific Maturity Classic at The Meadows and an all the way win-ner of the Wangaratta Cup a month later, is rumoured to have been sold to a large Chinese kennel.

Paddy’s Flame earned his stripes at stud too, and although he wasn’t every-one’s cup of tea, he certainly proved that he could produce plenty of bread and butter winners.

Paddy’s Flame was sitting in 16th position in the Leading Sires for 2012, with a strike rate of 13.57%, derived from 514 winners.

A son of Ireland’s Larkhill Jo and Miss Holly, his bloodlines combined two of the best available, and he proved that he was better than good on the track, winning 23 of his 38 starts and at one time holding the Sale 440 metres track record.

Due to economic

conditions, the light at the end

of the tunnel has been turned off.

The Chilcotts, Mick and Julie, experienced a career high four winners at the Shepparton May 2 meeting. Pictured (L-R) are the quartet, littermates Chuckie Cheese and Cheesey Grin, plus kennelmates Ducky Lee and Issey Whirl. All sprinters were successful over the 450 metres trip, with Chuckie Cheese and Issey Whirl recording 25.63, while Ducky Lee hit the line in 25.73 and Cheesey Grin a tad slower in 25.80. Should be enough prizemoney to finance another trip to Darwin, as Mick showed his prowess with a fishing rod last year, bagging a catch that even Graeme Bate would have been envious.

DOLORES RUTH is intent in rewriting all the greyhound history books.

Last night she was at Shelbourne to see her three runners finish first, second and third in a thrilling final to the Betfair 600, while across the water at Wimble-don, her three challengers won their third round heats of the williamhill.com English Derby in emphatic fashion.

Rockchase Bullet and Razldazl Will raced neck and neck to the bend in the Betfair 600 final, but on the bend Kingo (Kinloch Brae x Razldazl Pearl) suddenly changed gears and shot between the two leaders to show the way into the back.

At half-way it was Kingo by a length from Razldazl Will, with Rockchase Bullet and Razldazl George next, but only four lengths separated the entire field.

They closed up into the third bend, where Razldazl Will moved up to chal-lenge Kingo, and now Razldazl George and Tibetan Skies were poised just in behind.

Razldazl George came through strongly to move into second off the final bend, but Kingo is a very strong runner and he raced on to win by two lengths from Razldazl George and another half length to Razldazl Will in 32.40.

Will deprived Tibetan Skies of third by a short head.

Not alone were the first three trained by Dolores Ruth, but they are all sons of the famed Razldazl Pearl.

Kingo also made his own piece of greyhound history as he became only the second greyhound ever to win the 600 in successive years.

The only previous dual winner was the Ger McKenna trained Ballybeg Prim back in 1975 and 1976.

The Betfair Casino Consolation 600 also produced a very noteworthy effort, as Conor Fahy’s Tyrur Willyjoe (Hades Rocket x Tyrur Rachel) made an electric start from three and posted one of the all-time fast sectionals, 5.84, as he opened a big lead to the opening bend from Monleek Force.

Willyjoe enjoyed a long lead down the far side from Monleek Force and Fastaway King, and despite noticeably fading on the run-in, still won by two lengths from Monleek Force in 32.56, with Fastaway King three parts of a length third. Sensational runs in semis THE Larry Dunne Open 525 at Shel-bourne has developed into a fantastic competition, and there will be a mighty battle for next Saturday’s €10,000 to the winner final.

We were served up some absolutely sensational performances in the semi-finals on Saturday

We all knew that John Linehan’s Droopys Cain (Ace Hi Rumble x Droopys Laramie) was a potential star, but many were still shocked by the enormity of his performance in the first semi-final. .

Droopys Cain wasn’t best away, as Swift Marathon got away running from three and led up from Sparta Maestro and Mister Glenard, with Droopys Cain back in fifth.

Fate then took a hand when Mister Glenard was cut off on the bend and was checked wide, where he badly bumped Sparta Maestro.

Droopys Cain grabbed his opportu-nity and slipped into second spot as they entered the back straight.

Swift Marathon led by three lengths into the back but Droopys Cain really motored down the far side and actually led by a length and a half the third bend.

He raced away to win by three and a half lengths in 28.19, while Sparta Maes-tro also ran on very impressively after his mishap to beat Swift Marathon by a length for second. Puma’s amazing strike THE OTHER semi also produced a sen-sational run, as Frances O’Donnell’s Sky-walker Puma (Royal Impact x Dianas Ranger) came from an impossible posi-tion with a big late run to deny Flandys Ryan by a neck in 28.61.

This was a performance that should rate at least equal to Droopys Cain’s effort in the first semi.

Piercestown Con was fast away on the inside and led up narrowly from

Flandys Ryan and Bling Bling Buzz, while Tyrur Big Mike, for once, was slowly away.

Big Mike made ground to the bend, where he found himself with nowhere to go and checked badly wide, where he thundered into Skywalker Puma.

Without exaggeration, Skywalker Puma must have been 10 or 12 lengths adrift of the lead out of the second bend.

He then went into overdrive and was poised to strike when the leaders crowded on the third bend.

Flandys Ryan was clear turning for home but Skywalker Puma then arrived with a rush to snatch a highly unlikely but quite amazing neck victory over Flandys Ryan in 28.61. Draw for Saturday’s final: 1. Swift Mara-thon; 2. Droopys Cain; 3. Skywalker Puma; 4. Flandys Ryan; 5. Bling Bling Buzz (m); 6. Sparta Maestro (m) A night of doubles TRAINERS Frances O’Donnell, Conor Fahy and Seamus Graham all scored doubles on the night, and they included some really notable performances.

Fahy’s big winner was, of course, Tyrur Willyjoe in the Betfair Consolation, but he was also on the mark with Tyrur Sycamore (Top Savings x Tyrur Jade), which won the second race, an Open 550.

Paddy Design and Airforce Harlem led up but Tyrur Sycamore rode a bump on the bend as he challenged on the outside to dash clear into the back from Exciting Talent.

He looked an assured winner at half-way but then had to call on all his re-serves to hold Exciting Talent by a short head in 30.25.

The big O’Donnell winner was Sky-walker Puma in the Dunne semi-final, but the first leg of the double was provided by Skywalker Kate (Brett Lee x Strawberry Leaf), also owned by Ray Patterson, who scored in 28.68 in an Open 525 for bitches.

Kate was quickly into stride and led up from Smoke Pixie.

Clydal Spirit went third at half-way but Skywalker Kate and Smoke Pixie were well clear at this stage.

Pixie challenged on the third bend and looked a major threat turning for home on the inside.

But then Clydal Spirit arrived fast on the outside and Skywalker Kate had to dig deep to hold Clydal Spirit by a head in 28.68, with Smoke Pixie a length and a half third.

First leg of the Seamus Graham dou-ble was provided by Neil Farrar’s Swift Impulse (Kinloch Brae x Swift Reel) in an A1 525.

Returning from a lay-off, Swift Im-pulse was easy in the market but she was fast into stride and led all the way from Beaming Olive, also returning from a break.

Beaming challenged hard on the run-in but Swift Impulse held on by the mini-mum in 28.80, with Swords Jacko a length third. Graham’s brace THE DOUBLE was completed in most emphatic fashion by the Still Dreaming Syndicate owned Eabhas Fantasy (Premier Fantasy x Kingsmill Beauty) in an Open 525.

This dog has really blossomed in recent weeks, and this was another top class effort, as he raced clear to the bend from Mays Milan and was never in any danger.

Staying on powerfully, he stopped the clock in 28.58 as he led home Mays Milan by three and a half lengths, with Danmar Benny some two lengths third.

Fastest of the bitch winners was the John McGee trained Solo Star (Droopys Kewell x Gingers Pepes), as she won the all bitch Open 525 sixth race.

Solo Star flashed out of the four box and enjoyed a four length lead on the second bend, as half the field, including Kranky Rosaleen, Tyrur Monica and Sub-way Ruth were all baulked on the bend.

Barrack Patsy finished fast, but Solo Star held on gamely for a half length ver-dict in 28.50.

A finalist in last year’s Puppy Derby, Pat Buckley’s Incitatus (Rumble Impact x Coolavanny Minor) has always looked a potential champion stayer.

Well, he took another step up that ladder with an emphatic victory in the Open 750 in a very smart 41.74.

Incitatus was smartly into stride and led Vito Dawn into the home straight first time.

Mountaylor Ace moved second down the far side and closed into the fifth bend.

But from here Incitatus was much too strong, and the Javier Jarne owned tracker raced on to win by four and a half lengths from Mountaylor Ace, with Dog-

withacollar staying on strongly for third spot, a length back.

The final race was over 575 yards, and here we had another thriller. Lisnakill Jack was badly baulked when just lead-ing on the opening bend and Cooly Colebe shot into a four lengths lead into the back straight.

He appeared to be home and hosed when clear on the final corner but he faded on the run-in, allied to the Leo Dun-phy trained Ringtown Ben (Hades Rocket x Ringtown Rambler) finishing fast, and Ringtown snatched victory by a length in 31.59. Tyra is so cool in Oaks TYRA COOL, owned by Gary Lough-nane, maintained her tremendous level of performances through the Roche’s Feeds Oaks at Limerick on Saturday night when claiming the €5,000 prize.

A feature of the competition had been the flying starting of Tyra Cool, and it again proved to be the decisive factor in the final.

She left traps like a scalded cat and led Trixies Post and Airmount Swank around the bend, where Lass Cause was badly baulked.

From here, Tyra Cool was in com-mand and won by a length and a half from the gallant Trixies Post in 28.66, with Airmount Swank some two and a half lengths third. Jayfkay, Rioga, Bugatti and Geoff on the mark APART FROM HER Betfair 600 1-2-3 at Wimbledon, Dolores Ruth was also a dominant figure at Wimbledon on Satur-day, where she had a treble in the third round of the williamhill.com English Derby, while Pat Curtin also got in on the act when Shelbourne Geoff won a heat.

In all, seven Irish trained greyhounds made it through to next Tuesday’s quar-ter-finals.

Razldazl Jayfkay wasn’t as brilliant as last week but led all to win by three parts of a length, and the same in 28.48 from Graigues Orchard and Westmead Adonis.

Razldazl Rioga gave a copybook performance as he flashed from the in-side box and led all when winning by three parts of a length from Mill Maximus in 28.62, with Droopys Lorenzo two lengths third.

Dolores completed a marvellous treble with Razldazl Bugatti, who flew out and led all the way to win the final heat, scoring by five and a half lengths and a head from fellow Irish challengers, Tinas Nova and Judicial Ruling in 28.61.

Shelbourne Geoff led early in his heat and then came a second time to win by a length from Droopys Loner in 28.54.

Fraser Black’s Droopys Jet put up a brave show in heat 7, where he was slowly away but finished with a flourish, just failing to catch Coolavanny Bert in 28.51.

Former Ian Reilly trained Bubbly Phoenix did a powerful run when scorch-ing home a seven lengths winner of the opening heat in 28.19.

Longwood Hawk and Trewmount Snap also qualified.

Charlie Lister’s Boher Paddy got up on the line to pip Farloe Ironman by a short head in 28.48, while reigning cham-pion, Taylors Sky was beaten again, but he did qualify safely in second place, four and a quarter lengths behind Paul Young’s Young Sid in 28.46. Olgers Affair, a daughter of Shrek and Alarming Affair, scored once in 28 starts and that was over 474 metres at Wangaratta in 27.65.

The only other member of her litter was Hay Affair (8 wins).

Olgers Affair has had one litter to date and that was to Texas Gold

whelped March 2010, leaving Gold Affair Two (5 wins).

The dam comes from a smart line and has already produced one with plenty of ability, which augurs ex-tremely well for the future of these youngsters.

Bit Chili EAGLEHAWK breeder, David Torr registered a litter by Bit Chili (Bombastic Shiraz x Chili Berger) from Catbalogan and the two bitches were whelped November 21. Catbalogan, a daughter of Firefly Boy and Special Intent, won two of her 32 tries and both were at Bendigo over 430 metres, where her PB was 24.53. APRIL 2012 BARCIA BALE

The AGRA’s Greyhound of the Month for April 2012 has been awarded to exciting young New South Wales sprinter Barcia Bale after his record breaking performance at Maitland on April 5th. Most unlucky to miss the award last month after a sensational track record breaking effort on debut at Bulli, he missed out to the mighty Miata.

Fell then finally won Bendigo May 7 RODALE, who fell at this venue on the Friday prior, was a reserve for a Tier 3 Maiden over 500 metres on Monday, May 7 and after gain-ing a start, finally scored at her 32nd attempt.

Coming from box four at $6.10, the Jason Tolson trained chaser scored by four and a half lengths over Solfurion ($3.50), with From Dav-ine ($13.40) three and a quarter lengths further astern.

Rodale, a daughter of Black Enforcer and Cuz’s Joy, owned by the Rod And Dale Syndi-cate, stopped the clock at 28.99. Old Diesel ran the BOD time of 28.40 to score in a Tier 3 Grade 5 over 500 metres.

Sent to box two as favourite at $2.40, the son of Droopys Scolari and Hyde Park de-feated Optic Prince ($2.90) by three and a half lengths, with Jay Bee Cee ($56.40) two and three quarter lengths back in third spot.

A winner of two of his six starts, Old Die-sel is trained by Shane Drummond for Dean Andreula. Wilson’s Venom took time honours over the 425 metres by running 24.08 to score in a Tier 3 Grade 5.

Drawn in box three at $6.90, the Lyn Smith trained chaser defeated Bush Lad ($11.00) by four and a half lengths, with Cele-bration ($3.10 fav) picking up third money, two lengths in arrears.

Wilson’s Venom, a son of Velocette and Proven Unique, owned by the Winning Glory Velocity Syndicate, has now won six of his 38 outings. Dynamic View posted the new PB of 28.51 to score in a 500 metres Tier 3 Grade 5.

After lining up in box five as favourite at $1.90, the fawn galloper saluted by a length and a quarter over Strawberry Field ($3.10), with Northern Rambler ($28.10) four and a quarter lengths further astern.

Dynamic View, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Same View, is trained by Clive McLennan for the McLennan Lesueur Syndicate.

Lektra-fying Horsham May 8 LEKTRA BLING took out the 480 metres Maiden Final on Tuesday night.

After lining up in box six at $7.20, the Philip Lenehan trained youngster scored by three and a half lengths over Golden Lemon ($32.60), with Etel Allen ($1.80 fav) two lengths further afield.

Lektra Bling, a daughter of Mogambo and Uno Nan, returned the new PB time of 27.36. Leeroy Rocker took time honours over the 410 metres for the second week running by posting the new PB of 22.89 to take out the final of the Maiden.

Coming from box eight as favourite at $1.20, the son of Premier Fantasy and Le Royale led throughout to beat Call Me Cheap ($15.00) by 10¾ lengths, with Shimizu ($32.30) a head back in third spot.

Leeroy Rocker, who’s won both of his starts so far, is owned by Jane Crawford and was the first leg of a winning treble for trainer, Graeme Bate.

The Jan Wheeler owned Allen Benji was leg two for Graeme and he ran 27.21 after leading throughout to score in a 480 metres Grade 5.

Sent to box one as favourite at $1.50, the son of Buttsie Bale and Swiss Bale scored by six lengths over Favaloro ($15.60), with a neck to third placed Shiraz Reef ($22.10). Frank Bale for Paul Wheeler completed Graeme’s treble by posting 23.30 to take out a 410 metres Grade 5.

Drawn in box eight at $2.70, the son of Bit Chili and Bora Bale saluted by two lengths over Desert Eagle ($2.50 fav), with My Apoca-lypse ($7.20) picking up third money, three and a quarter lengths away. There was a Mixed 4th/5th Grade over the 570 metres and Quiet Brad was the winner in 32.72.

The Garry Elliott owned and trained chaser wore the white vest at $4.90 to a half length win over Don’s Fantasy ($2.70 fav), with Six Bob ($5.40) picking up third money, a length in arrears.

Quiet Brad, a son of Where’s Pedro and Quiet Girl, has won six of his 22 outings.

Wilham’s Son ran the new PB and BON time of 27.00 to take out the 480 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Wearing the red vest as favourite at $2.10, the son of Bartrim Bale and Bahloo Express defeated Shintaro Samurai ($5.00) by three and a quarter lengths, with Deville ($3.90) a length and a quarter back in third spot.

Wilham’s Son, who’s scored in nine of his 28 starts, is trained by Darren Murray for T.R. & P.R. Hitch.

Stenwick salutes The Meadows May 9 AT LAST Wednesday’s midweek city meeting there was the Le Pine Funerals Grade 5 over 600 metres that was won by Stenwick.

From box one, the daughter of Where’s Pedro and Kingston Aura sped to the front and led Greysynd’s Rose by a half length in 9.06 with a lap to go.

Down the back the Ringwood North ken-nelled pacesetter gained a length break on Greysynd’s Rose and clocked 22.23 at the next checkpoint.

With the others headed by Shiraz’s Luck ($3.70 fav) and Special Surgeon ($19.30) both running on fairly, it was easy pickings for Sten-wick, especially after Greysynd’s Rose copped a nasty check rounding the final bend.

Prepared by Peter “The Wizard” Wishart, Stenwick ($4.90) charged past the judge over seven lengths clear of Shiraz’s Luck in a new PB 34.62, while there was a further two and a quarter lengths to third placed Candescent ($43.00), who flashed up from a midfield posi-tion on the home turn to secure the skinny end of the prize.

Raced by Lizzie Gibilisco, Stenwick has contested 44 events, winning four times with 13 placings, whilst at The Meadows his score-card shows three wins from 15 attempts.

A smart new PB 30.06 was handed in by $1.70 hot pop, Napthine Bale, winner of the MTD Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Drawn ideally in box two, the Paul Wheeler owned chaser hit the ground running, and after running very fast splits of 5.03 and 17.75, he reduced his PB by five lengths when running out a near eight lengths winner over Allen Gordy ($10.20), with third placed Cruz Kelton ($12.60) a length and a quarter further astern.

Reported to be the pick of the Larking About and Kazar Bale litter, whelped Septem-ber 26, 2010, the Graeme Bate trained Nap-thine Bale has graced the tracks four times, posting three wins and a luckless third.

Graeme Bate chimed-in with two more winners on the 12-race card, the first of which occurred in the TAB Maiden when Allen Cas-ton ($1.540 fav) exited box two and worked home hard for a neck victory.

After Cardiac Arrest took over from the wide tracking Show Some Style rounding the initial corner, it took most of the 525 metres for Allen Caston to rein-in the front runner.

Going home a bit the better, the Jan Wheeler owned brindle son of Surf Lorian and Belbin Bale registered his first win at his sec-ond start by downing the fast finishing Allen Fordham ($19.50) in 30.77, with placed Car-diac Arrest ($12.70) third.

For Jan Wheeler it was a double too, as the blue vested Allen Gaspar, $3.40 chance, led most of the way in the 525 metres Nation-wide Seafoods Grade 5.

My Bella Me took them to the first corner but ran into bother, allowing a saloon passage run for Allen Gaspar.

Making the most of his good fortune, the son of Premier Fantasy and Furlong Bale notched his second win at his fourth start when defeating Dyna Bernt ($1.90 fav) and third placed My Bella Me ($8.20) in 30.66.

Paul Williams and Dave Knocker teamed-up with Nugget Choice to land the AWM Elec-trical Grade 5 over 525 metres.

Having drawn the eight gate, Nugget Choice came out well and drove into the first turn, where Ikari Pedro showed the way.

Trouble at the first corner saw Nugget Choice shuffled back to fourth, and Ikari Pedro was still ahead coming off the back, where he speared wide.

That was the only invitation needed by Nugget Choice ($4.60), with the son of Where’s Pedro and Shemar notching his fifth success at his 23rd outing when beating Dyna Cari ($2.80 fav) by a neck in 30.35, while Ikari Pedro ($3.20) wound up third.

Langwarrin’s Dave Knocker then pro-duced Long Gully Bob, who was rated at $3.00 to snare the Geotechnical Laboratories Grade 5.

Fast, clean and close Virginia May 13 THAT’S THE STORY of Sunday’s racing.

With a fairly brisk tail wind, fast times were the order of the day, and Coquihalla broke the magical 15-seconds when winning Race 11 in 14.98 for Rolland Parry.

Both Todd Kelly and Ben Rawlings pro-vided doubles via Kaboom Kaboom, Uncle Krang, and Gangster Penguin and Premier Strike.

With another 11-race program, the re-mainder of races were spread evenly, as Robyn Mackellar, Rolland Parry, Dale Martin, David Neal, Cathy Harris, Alisha Sutherland and Chris Martin all went home with a winner in the car.

The Club will continue with 4-dog events, as trainers are very supportive.

However, our feature races remain as 16-dog events.

The Waterloo Cup, Oaks and Derby will be held at our final meeting in early Septem-ber – and don’t forget, entry to the Waterloo is restricted to Best 16 (coursing form), whilst those greyhounds must have competed twice at Virginia.

With some very competitive racing and good fast times, there are a number of strong contenders for these feature events.

Talking Greyhounds NOMINATIONS close next Wednesday, May 23 at 9.00 with GRNSW for the race meeting at Wagga on Sunday, May 27.

This will be week one of the Wagga grey-hounds Gold Cup Carnival and will feature heats of the Butch Pertzel Memorial 5th Grade (400m) and the Simaroo Lodge Maiden series over 525 metres.

Both finals will be run on Wagga Cup night, June 10, with the Butch Pertzel Memorial worth $3,000 to the winner and the Simaroo Lodge is of $2,000 plus a $1,000 Blue Paws Bonus.

The Wagga Cup Carnival is shaping up well with a wide array of different events pro-grammed.

There was an enormous roll-up at the trials on Sunday morning, and it is expected that a number of ‘out of town’ greyhounds will trial this Sunday morning in preparation for the Wagga Cup.

Next week we will preview all the big local chances that will contest the Cup this year.

It’s been a while since a Wagga trainer won the Wagga Cup, with Scrumptious being the last in 2005, winning for Kevin Podmore.

********** THE race meeting at Wagga on May 27 will also be the Wagga Club’s 65 Roses Day race meeting.

Greyhound Racing New South Wales has teamed up with the Cystic Fibrosis organisa-tion to raise funds for a very worthy cause.

Any greyhound that wins out of the Red box on May 27, $250 will be donated to Cystic Fibrosis.

The Wagga Club will also run a raffle on the night, with all funds raised going into the kitty.

Greyhound Racing has been a fantastic fundraiser for various charities over many years.

Well done to the greyhound racing frater-nity for once again embracing a wonderful cause.

********** WITH Wagga out of action for several weeks, trainers have turned to other tracks in search of a winner. ` Wagga trainers, John and Margaret Hart-ley ventured to Richmond last Saturday night and pulled-off a memorable victory with the fast finishing Ray Ray.

After being around $18.00 on the NSW TAB just prior to start time, punters jumped on Ray Ray, crunching the odds into $5.90.

It was a similar story on-course, with bookmakers betting as much as $13 before a series of bets saw the price tumble in.

Ray Ray will run in the final at Richmond before a possible tilt at the Wagga Cup, a race that has eluded the Hartleys, who have fin-ished runner-up on three occasions.

It’s amazing the amount of greyhounds that win next after a good showing at Wagga, leading one prominent punter to comment that Wagga form is the best guide in Australian greyhound racing.
