RADLEY BALE is well on his way to becoming our highest stakemoney earner after taking out Saturday night’s The Temlee at The Meadows. A Group 1 hand-picked event over 525 metres, Radley Bale was away okay in the stripe jacket but became involved in a huge scrim-mage with Godsend and others that saw the Paul Wheeler owned dog near-last a lap out.

“He nearly went over the rail when he collided with Godsend,” said Radley Bale’s trainer, Graeme Bate.

With a huge crowd cheering the greyhounds on, high-tailing it out in front were the two widest drawn run-ners, Mystic Apple and Cape Hawke,

with very little separating them at the post the first time in 5.10. Cape Hawke copped a check rounding the bend that left Mystic Apple ahead of Glen Gallon along the back straight, and although Radley Bale ($6.70) had railed to fourth, he was still spotting them a five lengths start when the timer was paused at 17.92. A very strong type, the Sale and Cranbourne Cup winner, Mystic Ap-ple was ahead of Brisbane Cup win-ner, Glen Gallon rounding the home

turn, while Radley Bale was angling for a rails run and just behind them was the luckless Cape Hawke, who was about to run into more bother. With Mystic Apple ($15.70) still in front in the shadows of the post, it seemed likely that the $75,000 win-ner’s cheque and the Group 1 glory would be heading to Waurn Ponds.

But Radley Bale persisted with the rails run and nailed Mystic Apple in the very last bound, scoring by a head, whilst Glen Gallon ($2.00 fav) was also doing his best on the line and wound up third, a nose away.

Perhaps I hadn’t mentioned that the run of the race belonged to Perth Cup winner, Oaks Road.

He was involved in that huge col-lision with Radley Bale and company at boxrise to be last heading out of the straight.

Despite having another powerful railer, Radley Bale ahead of him all the way, the Mark Gatt trained dog went to the line under ‘double wraps’ in fourth spot, three quarters of a length adrift, followed home by Bo-gie King, Dyna Tron, Godsend and Cape Hawke, who whipped ’em in.

I reckon my dog (Radley Bale) dipped close to the line when tight-ened for room,” Graeme told us.

Or another scenario is that maybe Oaks Road galloped on Radley Bale’s heels at that stage.

For a bloke who’s ‘been there and done that’ in the speed sport, the Lara mentor made this huge statement, “It was one of the biggest thrills I’ve had in greyhound racing,” when referring to his first win in the ‘black type’ feature.

Should Radley Bale make it through to the Australian Cup final on Saturday week at his 101st race start

then his next mission will be the Golden Easter Egg at Wentworth Park in Sydney, and if able to come through that series undefeated, after 104 raceday appearances the honest chaser would almost be a millionaire.

With the racing game being quite fickle though, Graeme used the old sporting cliché, “I’ll take it one week at a time”, when referring to the up-coming state of play for his kennel star.

It was one of the best ‘by invita-tion only’ races you could witness, and I’m happy to say the selection panel got it right this time, apart from the reserves… but that’s another story.

Winner of the Group 2 Launceston Cup just five days prior to last weekend’s success, Radley Bale, a son of Big Daddy Cool and Minkara Bale, has won five of his dozen starts around The Meadows’ sprint trip. In 2011 he won at least one race in 10 of the 12 months, missing out in May and July, whilst the red fawn racer’s scorecard shows 98 outings that have yielded 36 wins and 27 placings, earning $569,493.

Joe Briffa and Graeme Bate were quite pleased with Radley Bale’s Saturday night victory in The Temlee, and were joined on the dais by sponsors, MGRA Directors and GRV Board members for the lavish post-race trophy presentation.

LAST START Perth Cup runner-up, Lektra Jay finally got some “justice” by taking out last Satur-day night’s Group 2 Macro Meats The Rookie Rebel staged over 600 metres at The Meadows.

The son of Where’s Pedro and Elektra was a finalist in the Group 1 Sale Cup on Boxing Day, finish-ing a close sixth and then ran third in the Group 2 Cranbourne Cup prior to the Perth Cup, so this was a very well deserved victory.

Lining up in box eight in the ‘by invitation only’ event, the white and black chaser was surpris-ingly the sixth pick with punters, although under double-figure odds at $8.80.

Punters opted for Noble Pedro out of box four and had him on top at $3.90, with Strong Intention in the red second pick at $4.60 and Stack ’Em Flat in the two their third choice at $4.80.

Don Chendo was at $6.50, with Dyna Morris next at $7.30, sug-gesting punters were of the opinion this was one really tough race.

The only two runners conceded little chance were Befitting ($17.40) and the reserve, Cousin Callum at $31.90.

At boxrise it was almost a per-fect start, except for Stack ’Em Flat, who as usual strolled out of the traps a conspicuous last.

Into the first bend and Strong Intention had booted up on the in-side to lead from Lektra Jay going forward but a bit wide, while

Cousin Callum was in the middle and third.

Strong Intention led down to the post the first time in 8.94 with a length and a half on Lektra Jay, while Dyna Morris had positioned third, two lengths back, and there was a further two lengths to Cousin Callum outside of Don Chendo.

Strong Intention was where he likes to be, dictating the tempo, and raced through the second check-point in 21.92 with Lektra Jay try-ing to keep in touch, just two lengths behind, whilst he had his kennelmate Dyna Morris on his inside in the box seat and further back was the ominous sign of the powerful finishing Stack ’Em Flat railing into fourth spot.

Lektra Jay put it into top gear and closed around the side before joining Strong Intention on the fi-nal corner, while Stack ’Em Flat had hooked out to make his charge with Dyna Morris on the rail.

Lektra Jay surged to the front just after straightening and came

away over the concluding stages to score a really tough two and three quarter lengths victory in 34.40.

Strong Intention battled away gamely to hold down second spot, with the fast finishing Stack ’Em Flat just a half head away third and Dyna Morris wound up fourth.

Next home was Cousin Callum ahead of Don Chendo, Befitting and Noble Pedro.

All accolades go to the winner though, as he had to work hard throughout to land the $40,000 first prizemoney and make it four from seven at the trip.

The Phil Lenehan owned chaser has now raced 66 times in total for 22 wins and 20 placings with $196,565 in the bank.

Trained by Andrea Dailly, we caught up with Tom Dailly, who remarked, “Yes, it was a real good win; well deserved I thought.”

“We’re been pleased with how he’s been going of late, as he had-n’t had much luck in a couple of his previous runs in Group races, but he got it here.”

“He likes the pink, and from out there he got no trouble in the run, and you need that in this type of racing.”

“Strong Intention’s a very good dog, so it took something special to run him down; it was a very good run from our bloke.”

We asked Tom what was next on the agenda.

“He’s in the Australian Cup (heats) next week.”

- Darryl Embling

Trevor Smith joined Sue and Phil Lenehan after their colourful and avid racer, Lektra Jay took out the Group 2 The Rookie Rebel, covering the 600 metres trip at The Meadows in 34.40 last weekend. A model of consistency, the ‘Team Dailly’ trained white and brindle dog is racing in peak form.

Lektra Jay waltzed away with the prize in The Rookie Rebel, having recently made the final of both the Sale and Cranbourne Cups for the Lenehan clan.

AT THE MEADOWS last weekend we witnessed seven preliminaries of the Rover Mowers Australian Cup… and just three winners broke through the 30-seconds barrier.

It was in the final race on the card that we saw the fastest time for the 525 metres trip handed in by the well-backed Bubba’s Dream. Raced by Ken Bailey at the East Gippsland town of Stratford, Bubba’s Dream was backing up from a last start 30.07 win at the Broadmeadows track, but the bookies took her on. Opening at a rather generous $7.00, that was quickly snapped-up and her price tumbled into $5.00, whilst on SuperTAB she returned $4.50. By Global Warming from Bomabo, Bubba’s Dream exited the two alley sweetly but then copped a check, set-tling down fourth behind the paceset-ting Explosive Drop in 5.04 a lap out. After the leader and several others were in bother rounding the first bend, NSW visitor, Adam Meway ($2.20 fav) charged to the front and looked the likely winner. But after passing through the next checkpoint in 17.86, Adam Meway’s advantage was drastically reduced by Bubba’s Dream, while Simple Class was also on the charge.

Drawing level coming off the back then taking over at the top of the straight, Bubba’s Dream came right away, scoring by an ever-widening

seven lengths in a new PB 29.84. Rattling home fin second spot was

Simple Class, who relegated Explosive Drop to third, three quarters of a length further astern.

A winner three times from six starts at the track and distance, Bubba’s Dream has scored eight times with two placings from 20 career out-ings. More slicksters RACING on a recently harrowed track, the first of the sub 30-secoinds win-ners was Audacious Elle in the third preliminary. Sporting sensational form on the provincial scene, Audacious Elle was entitled to be shorter in betting than her $4.30 starting price, and after get-ting across to the rail from the six trap, led them to the initial corner in 5.10.

Cutting loose in the back straight, the Kevin Wainwright owned chaser was doing it easy and completed the next phase in 17.79 with McMorgan and Dyna Lowell a couple of lengths adrift. After setting the race up with fast splits, the daughter of Bombastic Shi-raz and Pure Elle coasted past the post four and a quarter lengths ahead of Dyna Lowell in a new PB 29.98, while White Knuckles got going over the latter stages to grab the skinny end of the prize, a similar margin afield. Prepared at the Gippsland town of Yinnar by Mick Fearnley, Audacious

Elle notched her second win at the Northcorp Boulevard layout, and her 10th success from 20 attempts overall. Having taken out the Group 2 The Rookie Rebel with Lektra Jay, kennel-mate Lektra Express made it a double for connections by annexing an Aus-tralian Cup Preliminary in 29.97. After a great getaway from a fa-voured six alley, Lektra Express ($3.50) quickly found the front and clocked 5.03 early then 17.72 to be over five lengths clear coming off the back. Raced by Phil Lenehan and trained at Anakie by ‘Team Dailly’, the white and fawn son of Pure Octane and Miss Gabby had a leisurely romp in the park, scoring by nearly six lengths to Black Benji, with third placed Proven Knox a length and a half further astern.

Punters had pinned their faith in Drummond Bale, sending him to box one as the $2.10 popular pick. However, unfortunately for his supporters, the beautifully bred son of Bombastic Shiraz and Gold Rush Bale broke down badly and tailed them in, putting his Australian Cup plans in disarray. From 68 career outings, Lektra Express has won 17 times with 19 placings, whilst over the 525 metres trip at The Meadows his scorecard reveals four wins from 15 starts.

- Allan Hawkswell

MIATA made light work of the Group 2 Macro Meats The Zoom Top over 725 metres at The Mead-ows last Saturday night.

After coming up with box one, the champion Western Australian half-miler stifled the betting, even-tually ending up at $1.20 on Su-perTAB in the $40,000 to the win-ner race.

Her only danger, according to punters was Shimaguni at $7.60, with the remaining six in the hand-picked field all at double figure odds.

The majority of punters ex-pected it to be a “cake-walk” for the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird, and shortly after boxrise the race was as good as over, according to most.

Having landed second, Miata quickly found the lead and arrived at the first peg in 4.93 holding a length advantage over Thrilling Brat, while Shimaguni was on his outside, with Key To Eden fourth.

Miata put the speed on off the

back and raced around to the Judge with a lap to travel in 15.79 and her lead was now seven lengths over Thrilling Brat, while Shima-guni on the rail third.

Miata was flying out in front and made it around to the back corner in 29.37 with a seven lengths lead over Shimaguni, while there was three lengths to Thrilling Brat and He Knows Uno starting to finish on.

But up front Miata was show-ing no signs of stopping and made

her way to the line with seven and three quarter lengths to spare over New Zealand stayer, Thrilling Brat ($34.00), while Crafty Lady ($53.80) got home late along the fence for third money, two and a quarter lengths away.

Shimaguni was a half length back fourth just in front of He Knows Uno ($18.20), Key To Eden ($41.40), Granduer ($12.70) and Bling It On ($33.60).

At her first start around The Meadows staying trip, Miata stopped the clock at 42.37 to take her career tally to 20 wins with two placings in 23 starts.

Owned by Paul Stuart and Nicole Wheeler-Whye, the red fawn stayer has now won $199,065 in prizemoney.

We caught up with her trainer, Paul Stuart, who remarked, “She went really well.”

“I suppose there is always the worry that they won’t do interstate what they’ve done at home, but she had everything right for her for her first race here.”

“Getting the red with her was great, and where the other dogs were drawn all helped. She never let us down.”

“We came over (to Melbourne) a week before to get her acclima-tised and stayed with Paul Westerveld.:

“Miata settled in really well and trialled great, so it was ideal.”

“And to get a run like that, to be able to jump out on the bunny and lead, it would do her confi-dence no harm.”

“I was happy to get the win and she pulled up great.”

Paul has returned to Western Australia but is coming back next week for the Group 1 Superstayers.

“I’ll fly over on the Thursday or maybe the Wednesday midnight with her,” added Paul.

“If Miata makes the final, I’ll stay here for the week. We’ll stay at Paul’s again, as he has great facilities there, so that’s a real plus.” - Darryl Embling

A jubilant Paul Stuart with his champ, Miata who won the 725 metres The Zoom Top in scintillating fashion last Saturday night, scoring by nearly eight lengths in a nippy 42.37.

70 BITCHES IN THE FIRST SEVEN MONTHS

TERRY HINES and his mate, Michael Sherlock could not have scripted it better.

Hines and Sherlock share ownership in the former out-standing sprinter, Give Me Five, who is making his name as a stud dog. Last Thursday night at Albion Park, Hines and Sherlock spon-sored the final of the rich 520 me-tres Young Guns. Only one of the progeny of Give Me Five was in the final, a highly promising young dog called Hanson Senor. And as though scripted, Han-son Senor got up right on the line to win by a nose for owner trainer, Geoff Allen, the former Victorian who was celebrating his 63rd birthday on the day. Hines and Sherlock could not wipe the smiles from their dials. Hanson Senor (Give Me Five - Hanson Charm) didn’t let any of them down by getting up in the very last stride to win by a nose in 30.36, beating Seldom Said, with two and a half lengths to Aladdin’s Queen third. It was his eighth win in 17 starts. Allen is no stranger to win-ning Young Guns finals. “I ran the quinella years ago (2004) with Hanson Shigga and Hanson Teddy,” said Geoff. ”When the next one came around Hanson Shigga wasn't eligible, so Hanson Teddy won it.” Allen admits he was “a bit surprised” when Hanson Senor got up to win. “I didn’t really think he could win out of the five box, and with so much early pace in the final, I was expecting trouble at the first turn.” “But he got around okay and set-tled third. He’s strong, and from thereon he finished well.” Allen will give the dog a week off and then bring him back to Albion Park for the upcoming Group 2 Queensland Derby series. The Young Guns final was full of changes. Knocka Down began well and led into the back straight but Sel-dom Said raced to the front pass-ing the 600 metres boxes. Hanson Senor emerged out wide in the home straight and just got up on the line. Allen said Hanson Senor had been a constant improver. “He didn’t break-in all that well but he has just kept improv-ing,” said Geoff. “He’s a nice dog. and strong.” Hanson Senor is from the same damline as Geoff’s other Young Guns winners Hanson Shigga and Hanson Teddy.

Chaos comeback ADAM HINES needs to buy him-self a new set of bathroom scales. And after last Thursday night at Albion Park, Adam has enough money to do just that. That’s because comeback dog, Blazing Chaos landed a 520 me-tres Mixed 3rd/4th Grade at his second race start after 10 months on the sidelines. Adam lost just about all his greyhound gear in last year’s dev-astating floods. His home was totally sub-merged by floodwaters at Ipswich. When Adam put Blazing Chaos back into training four months ago, his scales were the human kind. Adam would weigh himself, then pick up the dog and weigh them both. He’d subtract one from the other and you get the dog’s weight. Trouble was, Adam's bath-room scales were out a couple of kilos. “Blazing Chaos was ready for a comeback weeks ago, but when Adam weighed him at the track he found he was three kilos up.” “He trimmed him up in the last few weeks but he was still a kilo up on his previous weight when he started last week,” said Broc Wright, head of the syndi-cate that races Blazing Chaos. Back in April last year, Broc was faced with one of the tough-est decisions he’s had to make in greyhound racing. Blazing Chaos (Surf Lorian – She’s Adams), a Group 1 National Sprint finalist and winner of 13 races, shattered his elbow in an accident at Sandown and his fu-ture looked grim. “I got the phone call and vir-tually I was asked do we put him down,” said Broc. “He owed us nothing and the decision was immediately made to save him.” Blazing Chaos was to be kept as a pet. Hines noticed how well the dog was a few months ago so put him into training, and last Thurs-day night at Albion Park Blazing Chaos, at only his second start in 10 months, bounced back to win a 520 metres Mixed 3rd/4th Grade in 30.23.

He ran down early leader, Spindle to win by two and a half lengths, with two and a quarter lengths to third placed Fashion Police, who rattled home. “The surgery cost us $3500. and at first it was just to keep him as a pet,” said Broc. “But to-night’s win has paid for the opera-tion.” Adam Hines, in January last year, had his Bundamba home wiped out in the floods. Broc's company, Betta Plasta came to the rescue and re-did all the plasterwork in Adam’s home. “The boys who own Blazing Chaos wanted to help Adam,” said Broc. “At the time of the floods, She’s Adams had a litter of pups by Surf Lorian (a repeat mating to Blazing Chaos) that were just a couple of weeks old, so we bought one.” That pup is now ready to be broken-in. Broc and his mates plan to name him Blazing Torrent. In Demand PAT HENNESSY has been a dog man for longer than he can re-member. Pat lives on the Northern Riv-ers of NSW and has not been in the best of health in recent months. But Premier Demand gave him a boost when he led through-out to win at Albion Park last Thursday night. Pat bred Premier Demand, who’s by Irish star, Premier Fan-tasy from his former smart race bitch, Demand. John Free trains Premier De-mand for Pat, and has had the dog for only three months. Last Thursday night he ran 30.29 to win a 520 metres Fifth Grade by three lengths over hot favourite, Boy Mail, with a head to Champagne Shell third. In four starts for Free, Premier Demand has won and been placed twice. “Peter Dapiran had him in Melbourne and he won three races with the dog,” said John. Free trained Demand for four starts at the end of her racing ca-reer and won twice. “Pat decided to take her home to breed with her but she didn’t come on season for a year,” said John. “This is her first litter, and she has since had problems and can't be bred with again.” Free expects Premier Demand to continue to improve. “He came to Albion Park cold but is racing well now,” he said. “I’ll probably go to the Queen-sland Derby heats in a couple of weeks.”

David Brasch

Hanson Senor had his trainer, Geoff Allen a “bit surprised” by the win, but nevertheless celebrated his 63rd birthday in style after the yellow vested chaser got up in the last bound to pinch the Young Guns final, running the 520 metres trip in 30.36 at Albion Park last Thursday night.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 – Page 7NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

WITH ALL the main greyhound at-tention focussed at The Meadows last Saturday night, the Wentworth Park meeting was still a solid fixture and a good crowd rolled up to support the home stars in their interstate quests with plenty of Sky Channel interest. One greyhound that could match it with the best in the land is the Lorraine Atchison owned and trained Thrilling Fonz, who scored his fourth win at headquarters, annexing the Schweppes Free For All in dominant fashion. There was some good support for the large 34kg black chaser who used his bulky frame to advantage, making things quite uncomfortable for the

26kg favourite, Wez Da Risk, who had drawn side by side at the 520 metres start. Boxrise saw Thrilling Fonz step away well from box four and then moved a tad left, bumping into Wez Da Risk.

The tiny chaser gathered herself up and still matched it with Thrilling

Fonz into the first turn, however, once the “big fella” drove to the front it was all over, as he has proven in the past the can run fast times. Thrilling Fonz cleared right out from Wez Da Risk, who was working overtime to stay in second spot down the back, while Undisputed Dos was next. Those behind the leader started to jam up on the home turn, allowing Thrilling Fonz to go further ahead.

He finished the race off most powerfully, scoring by a huge 10½ lengths for this son of Bombastic Shi-raz with Desolate claiming second prize, a neck in advance of Shady’s Lesson.

Breaking the 30-seconds mark for the third time in his four wins, Thrill-ing Fonz clocked 29.92 for the sprint trip. Thrilling Fonz (x Tarawi Tess) has now contested 39 races for 13 wins and 12 placings.

It also continues the wonderful form of New Zealand dogs that have ventured across ‘the ditch’ in recent times.

Desolate (Whisky Assassin x Si-enna Blue), trained by Chris Carl, has had 19 starts for five wins and six placings, whilst Owen Langley’s Shady’s Lesson (Winsome Lesson x Shady Spec) has had 47 career starts for 10 wins and 18 placings.

VETERAN lady trainer, Doreen Drynan is heading towards the 50 year mark with the lead and collar, and the likeable lady grabbed a rare double at the Glebe venue with solid wins by El Caballo and Ella Bonita. It was great to see El Caballo grab his second city win, as this son of El Galo has been placed behind some pretty smart chasers in recent times, including taking home a runner-up cheque behind Prince Diablo in the recent Bulli Gold Cup. Competing in the Centrebet Stake over 520 metres, El Caballo was only moderately away from the five alley, with the rails runner, King Biscuit Boy away well as too was Blitiz To Excel, who charged down the outside. Taking the lead upon leaving the straight Blitiz To Excel charged clear of King Biscuit Boy, with El Caballo working into third spot as they headed to the back. This order stayed the same until the home corner, where Blitiz To Ex-

cel started to shorten stride and El Caballo quickly moved up to chal-lenge.

Down the home running it was El Caballo that drew to the front and raced away for a two and a half lengths win over King Biscuit Boy in a new PB 30.36, while third placed Blitz To Excel was a neck away.

El Caballo (x Eluthra), who is bred, owned and trained at the Dry-nan’s Llandilo kennels, to date has had 30 career starts for seven wins and 14 placings.

Trained by Ben McCauley, King Biscuit Boy (Give Me Five x Hannah Jane) after 24 starts showing four wins and six placings, whilst Blitiz To Excel (Head Bound x Cawbourne Mim), trained by John Chapman, has had 22 starts for four wins and nine placings.

Speaking earlier about Prince Diablo, it is a tragedy for connections that the 2012 Gosford Cup and Bulli Gold Cup winner broke down when winning at the South Coast track through the week.

With so many big races coming up in the next few months, this star chaser was going to play a big hand, however, no doubt he will be well sought-after at stud.

Another chaser that ended his career, this time by voluntary retire-ment, is grand campaigner, Altario.

Garry Erwin is sure there is no more for this son of Closing Argu-ment, who raced on 125 occasions with 22 wins and 43 placings and earned just over $75,000 in stakes.

Nearing five years of age, this old boy will live a life of harmony at his trainer’s Ambarvale kennels.

Prepared by Lorraine Atchison, Thrilling Fonz had a bumping duel in the early stages of the 520 metres Free For All at Wentworth Park last Saturday night but broke clear and went on to score by 10½ lengths in 29.92.

JOHNNY WILL lived up to his name when he won the Brian Munro Mixed 2nd/3rd/4th Grade at Angle Park last Thursday night.

Wearing the blue vest and starting at $3.20, the Petar Jovanovic trained chaser jumped fairly then showed good speed to rail through and take over from Buckaringa Lad through the first turn. Getting away to lead by three lengths in the back straight, Johnny Will was setting a hot pace up front, extending the break to four lengths over Pint’s Delight at the top turn. Rounding the final bend nicely clear of Pint’s Delight, Johnny Will finished the race off well. The son of Spiral Nikita and Lep-rechaun Pace crossed the line five lengths ahead of Pint’s Delight in a

new personal best and Best Of Night 29.73, with Buckaringa Lad hanging on for third. A very promising chaser, Johnny Will has had just 16 starts for nine wins and is improving with every run.

Jainamo’s a dynamo JAINAMO notched her tenth win at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Lisa Rasmussen trained chaser took out the www.brightoncricket.com 515 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

A $5.50 chance behind race fa-vourite, Joken Kihael ($2.00), Jain-amo began sweetly from box five and showed pace to cross the field and hold the early lead over Koubek and Joken Kihael through the first turn. Skipping clear to lead by four lengths over Koubek along the back straight, Jainamo was traveling like a winner and maintained her pace to reach the top turn with a five lengths advantage. Rounding the final bend with her lad cut back to a couple of lengths, Jainamo dug deep in the run home, fending-off a determined finish from Koubek. The daughter of Where’s Pedro and Sadie Sage saluted the judge a neck in front of Koubek, clocking 30.30, while Big Yella made a late

surge to snare third place. PEA SHOOTER overcame the

odds and scored a win in the 643 me-tres event at Gawler last Wednesday for trainer, Murray Harvey. Starting at ridiculous quote of $18.00 in a small field of four, Pea Shooter was expected to struggle against race favourite, Kalden May-hem ($1.10) and strong stayer, Kal-den Petroni ($4.20). Wearing the red singlet, Pea Shooter began well and raced to the front through the first turn and led by a length over Kalden Petroni with a lap to run. Stretching the lead to three lengths passing the catching pen, Pea Shooter maintained her pace down the back straight and arrived at the top turn five lengths clear of Kalden Petroni, with Kalden Mayhem still last. Rounding the final bend with her lead reduced to three lengths, Pea Shooter dug deep to hold out the strong finish of Kalden Petroni over the closing stages. The daughter of Meticulous and Rated Perfect won by a half length to Kalden Petroni in 37.72, with Kalden Mayhem third.

Heart running hot CRAZY HEART maintained her great Angle Park form, as last Mon-day she racked-up her fourth succes-sive win in a Mixed 3rd/4th Grade over 515 metres for trainer, Bruce Lell-mann. Nicely drawn in box eight and starting the short-priced $1.50 favour-ite, Crazy Heart was away safely then mustered speed to muscle her way to the front over Helmet Head through the first turn.

Leading by just over a length in the back straight, Crazy Heart accel-erated away from Helmet Head to reach the top turn with a four lengths break. Increasing the leeway to six lengths through the final bend, Crazy Heart showed no mercy and careered away in the home straight. The daughter of Black Enforcer and Bar Crusher cruised past the post 10¾ lengths ahead of Steamy Thoughts in best of night 30.08, while Toorak Tango wound up third. Developing into one of the state’s leading sprinters in recent times, Crazy Heart took her tally to 24 wins and 18 placings from 53 career starts.

Joken again JOKEN KIHAEL has taken out the January SA Greyhound of the Month award for trainer, Petar Jovanovic, that comes on the back of his great win in the Group 3 SA Sprint Cham-pionship. Joken Kihael had four starts dur-ing the month for two wins and two seconds, with his best win being the Sprint Championship at Angle Park in a good 29.83.

Right on time RIGHT TIME has taken out the SA Run of the Month for trainer, Cam-eron Butcher after his track record gallop at Strathalbyn on January 15. A $1.60 elect from box seven in a Grade 6 event, Right Time scored by 14 lengths to Arlow Bale in 30.85, shaving .03 from Kalden Mayhem’s previous standard. An exciting prospect, Right Time has raced just 10 times for six wins and four placings.

SA

Paul Rehmann

Johnny Will notched his ninth career victory by annexing a 515 metres Mixed grade event at Angle Park last Thursday night, clocking a slick 29.73 for Petar Jovanovic and his team at Lewiston.

CONSISTENT dog, Posh Will scored arguably his best win on the Hobart circuit when he overcame difficulties to emerge triumphant in the Tas-freight Graduation over 599 metres last Thursday night. It was a brilliant win by the son of Collide as he was squeezed up soon after the start but managed to forge clear and set sail after the leaders Madelin Mac and Katnook Spirit. Posh Will and Whitney’s World reeled in the leaders by the time they hit the home turn and upon straighten-ing, the Sandy Elphinstone trained dog burst clear hugging the rail. He went on to defeat Whitney’s World by a half length, with the long odds-on favourite, Miss Hetti over two lengths astern. It was Posh Will's 12th career win and third on the Hobart circuit from 14 tries. “Ï was very happy with that run because he was crossed and was trapped wide for the first few metres and for a moment I thought he might be in trouble,” Elphinstone said. “But he got clear and chased the leaders and when he went to them he

was very strong.” “There was a lot to like about the win,” she said. Posh Will is owned by trainer breeder, Alan Clark, but the dog has been in the care of Elphinstone ever since he was broken-in. “I’ve become quite attached to the dog. Alan (Clark) had someone ring up wanting to buy Posh Will, so he rang me and said it was up to me if the dog was sold.”

“But I just couldn’t let him go so Alan didn’t sell him,” she said. Posh Will has won over all dis-tances, but Elphinstone says the dog is best over middle distances. “The dog is definitely more com-fortable at the middle distances so that’s where I try to place him these

days, although he is very good over 515 metres in Launceston.” Posh Will had a tendency to be a bit field shy in his younger days but the trainer says he's improving with age. ‘He was a mad railer, and still is, but early on he wouldn’t go around dogs.” “He’d sit and wait for runs, but these days he is starting to be a bit more flexible and shows a lot more track sense, and that’s what he showed in this run,” she said. The owner is keen for Posh Will to be tried in Melbourne, and Elphin-stone confirmed she is likely to take him for a series of races over 600 metres. “Alan (Clark) is keen to try him interstate, so when that time comes I’ll be taking him over because I don’t want to let him out of my hands,” she said. Whilst Posh Will was impressive when winning at his latest outing, the run of the favourite, Miss Hetti was also full of merit. Miss Hetti began only fairly from box two and was ‘crunched’ on the

first turn, sending her straight to the rear and about 15 lengths off the leader. Miss Hetti tacked-on at the 340 metres boxes, weaved a passage through the field and was doing better than anything else on the line. ‘Bear’ breeds winners OWNER, breeder and former trainer, Gerald ‘Bear’ Allford celebrated a double last week when two from a litter that he bred and owns saluted at both ends of the state. Bearville Boy, prepared at Long-ford by David Crosswell, scored a three lengths win in a Juvenile over 452 metres at Devonport last Thurs-day week. Bearville Boy began brilliantly from box four to lead clearly at the top turn and went on to score by over three lengths from Wynburn Voodoo, with Chineese Jet over a length astern. Bearville Boy was sent out one of the favourites, but in Hobart two days later, Bearville Phil, trained by Gary Johnson, saluted but at big odds, and at the expense of the shortest priced favourite on the program, Beaudine ($1.04). Bearville Phil began well from box seven and had enough pace to cross the field and hold sway at the top turn, while Beaudine missed the start and was last when they settled. Allford’s dog extended his lead in the home straight and had a seven lengths margin over Beaudine on the line. Given the manners possessed by both dogs, they look capable of win-ning at least a few more.

Media hype for Bulli PROMISING young sprinter, El Bulli made up for two inglorious runs with a tenacious victory in a strong Grade

4 event over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last week. El Bulli was having only his sev-enth start in the state, and his fourth on the U-turn circuit. After successive wins in Grade 5’s at Hobart and Devonport, the Mick Stringer trained dog finished well down the track at his two subse-quent outings in Grade 4 races atn Hobart and Devonport, but from awk-ward box draws. However, with the aid of the in-side alley,) El Bulli ($2.20 fav) showed good early speed to lead, and once on the bunny, he sped clear and had almost a length margin over Posh Emma on the line, with Where’s Ned three and a half lengths away third. It was his seventh start in the state, whilst the victory took his re-cord to three wins from seven out-ings. El Bulli is owned and raced by the Footy Fans United Syndicate, managed by Geoff ‘Slatts’ Slattery of Slattery Media. The dog began his career in Vic-toria, with his first nine starts at Gee-long producing a win, four seconds and a third before his form waned, and that’s when Slattery opted to send the dog to Stringer. El Bulli finished fifth at his first two Tasmanian starts in Juveniles in October last year, after which Stringer opted to give the dog a break from racing. It did the son of El Galo and Thai Again the world of good, given the ease with which he dealt with a Grade 5 field on resumption in Hobart early last month. He clocked 26.37 on that occa-sion, and last Thursday night he al-most mirrored that time (26.38). Slattery has been sending dogs to Tasmania for about a year with a lot of success.

After overcoming a slow start, the Sandra Elphinstone trained Posh Will went home far too well for Whitney’s World, covering Hobart’s 599 metres journey in 35.27 last Thursday night.

ONE OF THE great old sayings in thoroughbred racing for a jockey who’d had a fall is, “get straight back on another”.

No point pondering about the dangers, and to gain that needed con-fidence just saddle-up quickly. Well, at Dapto last Thursday night trainer, John Richardson put his black chaser, Final Word straight back into the action after the dog had a nasty fall at the same course seven days previous.

The dog took no ill-effects from the incident, as Final Word was on the pace from the outset and proved too strong for his rivals in his fourth race at the venue. Competing in the 600 metres Norm Rees Security Stake, Final Word was well served at the start from box seven and matched motors with the red vested Naawy Naawy into the first corner. Heading down the back straight Naawy Naawy held sway, with Final Word not too far away and appeared hard to hold out as he loomed up coming off the top bend.

Down the side Final Word swept past Naawy Naawy, with only Super Laurie running on from back in the pack. But Final Word raced strongly to the line and recorded a one and a half lengths victory over Super Laurie, with Naawy Naawy a neck away third. Final Word, by Suave Fella out of Star Elite, at just 26 months of age has already raced on 32 occasions for seven wins and nine placings.

Super Laurie (Super Burst x

Curilee), prepared by Leanne Gooden, is a veteran racer that’s had 90 starts for 21 wins and 35 placings, whilst the Andy Lord prepared Naawy Naawy (Surf Lorian x Corella) has produced 11 wins and 15 placings from 48 career starts. THERE WAS plenty of middle distance racing over the week, and two more 600 metres events were drawn at the Dogdome. Best of the wins was the Chris Hensler trained Garland Jock, who finished strongly to gain the result over Colonel Zeb, who tried to lead throughout. When the lids opened in the Mount Kembla Village Hotel Stake the best away was Colonel Zeb in the black singlet, while Glory Of Love was hunting through along the rail and the eventual winner, Garland Jock was amongst the other half of the field. Settling down at the lap mark, Colonel Zeb led over Glory Of Love and they took the field into the back straight, but off the top bend Garland Jock started to make ground along the paint. Just when Colonel Zeb looked set to win, along came Garland Jock with a well-timed run.

Taking over nearing the post, Garland Jock gained the ascendancy

scored by a half length to Colonel Zeb in 34.99, with Glory Of Love occupying third spot, a further two and three quarter lengths away. Garland Jock, who is by Com-mandant from Floozy Suzy, to date has had 56 career starts for three wins and eight placings.

Rosemarie Camilleri’s Colonel Zeb (Big Daddy Cool x Little Cham-pion) after 56 career starts has notched six wins and 21 placings, whilst Glory Of Love (Bombastic Shiraz x Friendly Love), trained by Ruth Matic, has had 30 career starts for six wins and nine placings.

IT WAS the ‘lucky’ green vest that was on the winner’s list again in another of the middle distance events when Thai Champ led throughout and clocked 35.02. When the lids rose, Thai Champ went straight to the front, with Cha-bak and Barb Monelli slotting-in be-hind the leader.

Thai Champ rolled clear of Barb Monelli at the lap mark, while Arapina Star was starting to gain ground as they headed to the back. Thai Champ was still clear down the back, and it was only Arapina Star that looked likely to threaten as they made their way to the home turn. Down the running Thai Champ was too good, holding out Arapina Star by one and a quarter lengths, with third placed Vee Bee Bay a half length further astern. Thai Champ, by El Galo from Thai Again, raced by Daniel Browne, has had 30 career starts for five wins and 11 placings.

Arapina Star (Bombastic shiraz x

Arapina Miss) has produced four wins and 12 placings from 25 career starts for trainer, Domenico Lauricella, whilst the Andrew Bayliss

trained Vee Bee Bay (Knocka Norrisx All Your Antics) has had 38 careerstarts showing six wins and 18 plac-ings.

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT at Wentworth Park we witnessed the successful return to the racetrack of the Christine Oldfield trained Spring Gun. The young racer had set the world on fire late last year, however, a mix-ture of bad luck in races and injury saw him miss out in both the Brisbane Cup and Silver Chief around Christ-mas time. Returning to the track for the first time in eight weeks, Spring Gun met a quality line-up that included recent National Derby winner, Sure As, plus recent city winners Time And Money and Black Hustler. Boxrise in the Rapidvite Stake saw the extreme drawn Good Thing best to begin, and Mr. Gazmick, who was also fast away in the yellow jacket.

Spring Gun had stepped moder-ately but it didn’t take the fast sprinter too long to accelerate and he’d pushed up by the first turn. Spring Gun was able to hold out Good Thing leaving the straight, and with the other fancied runners not in the hunt, it was only Spring Gun’s condition that might be a stumbling block. Spring Gun led them around the home time, with Good Thing unable to rein-in the leader, but charging home from well back was Time And Money.

Arriving at the post in the nick of time, Spring Gun had just lasted to score by a head over Time And Money, running the 520 metres jour-ney in 30.00, while Good Thing fin-ished third, a further one and three quarter lengths away. A son of Bombastic Shiraz and Ready For Rain , Spring Gun has had 27 career starts for 18 wins and two placings.

Anthony Bragg’s Time And Money (Slater x Black Sea) has raced 43 times for eight wins and 10 placings, whilst Good Thing (Slater x Dana Betty) has produced 25 wins and 33 placings from 80 starts for trainer, Rodney McDonald.

Former Tasmanian chaser, Wandy Neg scored his first city victory in NSW when a big winner of the opening event. having been runner-up at his first two attempts over the 520 metres at the venue. The son of El Galo has performed well against far stronger opposition in recent weeks and only needed an ounce of luck to show his real ability. When the lids opened Wandy Neg from box five was away midfield, while Patty’s Lady was best to begin along with Fox Destiny.

Nearing the first turn Patty’s Lady held a slight advantage, whilst Wandy Neg was pushing through the pack to slot into second place, with the leader covered as they headed into the back straight.

Rounding the top bend Wandy Neg issued a strong challenge on Patty’s Lady and by the home turn had shot clear with a winning break.

Wandy Neg was full of running in the run home and hit the line eight lengths ahead of Patty’s Lady, with Cawbourne Indy third, a further four and three quarter lengths away. Wandy Neg (x Sophia’s Destiny),

who recorded 30.19, is trained by Frank Hardman and overall he’s had 22 career starts for seven wins and eight placings.

Patty’s Lady (Pure Octane x Ikari Lee), trained by Lisa McFarlane, has raced on 49 occasions for six wins and seven placings, whilst the Andy Lord trained Cawbourne Indy (Hallucinate x Cawbourne Fraz) has had 47 career starts for 14 wins and 11 placings.

AFTER A RUN of outs, the An-thony Duggan trained Bullwinkle made it back to back wins when taking out the Pages Event Hire Stake. At the start of the 520 metres race it was Only Bill that jumped well from box three, whilst also the widest drawn Bye Bye Bucks showed great early pace.

Bye Bye Bucks led them out of the straight, while Bullwinkle had worked into second spot and the re-mainder of the field were racing tight, allowing the pacesetting duo to break clear. Although Bye Bye Bucks led to the home corner, it was Bullwinkle that issued a challenge soon after straight-ening.

Grabbing the ascendancy nearing the line, Bullwinkle went home too powerfully and recorded a half length win over Bye Bye Bucks in 30.12, with Snoopy Collins holding down third place, a further nine lengths away. Bullwinkle, by Knocka Norris from Tarney Bear, overall has had 43 starts for eight wins and 12 placings.

Bye Bye Bucks (Bit Chili x See Ya Senorita), trained by Ken Lewis, from 14 career starts has collected six wins and four placings, whilst the Chris Carl prepared Snoopy Collins (Surf Lorian x Trendy Habit) has contested 32 races, producing four wins and 16 placings.

THE changing face of sponsorship of the major events at Shelbourne Park continues with the exciting news that leading online exchange firm, Betfair has taken over the famed event, known in recent years as the Hegarty Bookmakers 600. This 600 yard event became the first major open event to be spon-sored in Ireland when Guinness backed it back in 1964. The legendary Cranog Bet won that initial running, and her daughter, Itsamint and son, Itsachampion went on to win it in 1969 and 1972 respec-tively. It passed on to Euro Off-Track in 2001, then becoming the Ladbrokes 600 in 2003 until that firm moved over to the Irish Derby two years ago and track bookmaker, Ted Hegarty

moved in as sponsor. Many of the great legends of the track figure on the 600 roll of honour, including Faithful Hope, Russian Gun, Tommy Astaire, Ballybeg Prim, Manorville Major, Spiral Nikita, Late Late Show, Tyrur Ted, Ardkill Jamie and College Causeway. It was announced at a well-attended press conference in Shel-bourne that Betfair is to be the new sponsor, and the event will have an increased prize fund and the final will be televised lived by RTE. The four run classic over 600 yards will commence on Saturday,

April 21, with the final on Saturday, May 12. The winner’s prize will be €25,000, an increase of €5,000 on last year, while the placed greyhounds will receive €6,000 and €3,000, with the unplaced finalists collecting €1,500 each. All heat winners will receive €150. In a break from previous years, there will be Trial Stakes run at Lim-erick, Cork, Tralee, Harold’s Cross and Galway, with the winners receiv-ing €500 and free entry to the Betfair 600. In addition, the winner of the Gain Irish Cesarewitch at Mullingar will receive free admission. Last year’s winner, Kingo is very

much on course for a defence of his title. Dolores Ruth will be sending him to Mullingar for the Cesarewitch prior to the Betfair event. Kingo had his first trial of the year prior to racing on Saturday at Shelbourne when he clocked 28.84 for the 525 yards. Dolores gave a number of her stars trials, with Razldazl Dmagio doing 28.77, Razldazl Barack (28.95), Razldazl Houdini (28.97) and Razldazl Will (29.92) over 550. Those times were recorded in the special afternoon session, while be-fore racing Cian Abbey went around in 28.63, Rockchase Bullet (28.79) and Danmar Benny (28.78).

Wimbledon return PAUL HENNESSY is planning on launching another strong raid on the williamhill.com English Derby ,and his team is likely to be led by last year’s third Barefoot Bullet and one of the top 2011 puppies, Rattlin Gold-star.

Barefoot Bullet had his second race of the year at Shelbourne on Sat-urday night but ruined his chances when walking out of traps before fin-ishing fifth behind Piercestown Sand. Hennessy is planning not to run the dog in Ireland again before Wim-bledon. “He just hasn’t adapted to the new traps at Shelbourne and I don’t want to confuse him any further.” “We will give him a few runs out of the Wimbledon traps before the Derby, in a trial and perhaps even a race.” “He handled them well last andhe ran the track very well also.” Last year he brought Barefoot Bullet to Wimbledon without a prior run and is going the same route with Rattlin Goldstar, which recently did a flying sprint trial around Limerick. Rattlin Goldstar, a son of Droopys Scolari, did a 28.34 run around Shelbourne and also a very good second placing behind Milldean Panther.

Giant bookmaking firm, Betfair continues to support greyhound racing in Ireland, opting to pick up the tab for sponsoring the famous Hegarty Bookmakers 600 at Shelbourne Park this year.

NOVEL incentive employed by Palm Beach Kennel Club’s GM, Jeff Prince to entice patrons to the Florida venue for the He’s My Man Classic.

Two lucky patrons had the opportu-nity to win a couple of tickets to the Yanks number one sporting event, The Super Bowl for the NFL final.

Also included in the package was hotel accommodation and a travel voucher.

Something for our GM’s to ponder when offering freebies to patrons.

Maybe two tickets to this year’s Grand Final plus overnight accommoda-tion at any of the plush hotels that sur-round the famous MCG. Warrnambool on Wednesday WANNON PARK, Warrnambool’s first class racing complex, will slot back into its former rightful place on the Wednesday evening programming list when the rede-velopment of Ballarat commences.

The Western District club had to forego its normal successful Wednesday night position to fill a new dubious twilight time created by Sky Channel on a Satur-day evening.

Depending on whom you talk to in the seaside town, opinions differ as to whether the experiment worked, but there are plenty of smiling faces after the news was announced that they would be back racing on Wednesday evenings, albeit for a short stint.

What the future holds for the strong breeding and rearing area is that once Ballarat its re-opened, the club will try the Sunday afternoon timeslot.

Sunday racing has been a revelation in Victoria, in particular Sandown Park and Healesville, the latter never short of nominations and proudly boasting the “family” club tag.

OTL had a chat to two Warrnambool identities, legendary Norm McCullagh, the man behind the “Warrnambool Warrior”, Bold Trease, and Vice President, Stuart Bishop.

What McCullagh doesn’t know about breeding, rearing, training, punting and the historic background of his local club, isn’t worth knowing.

Bishop is a successful businessman, who like McCullagh races, breeds and rears his own chasers.

Both have an unbridled passion for their club; Bishop in particular.

“It might not have been the best deci-sion for the locals, but for the greyhound industry overall, we had to support GRV and have a crack at the Saturday twilight timeslot.”

“Sure it doesn’t suit everybody, and personally I’d welcome the opportunity to revert back to THE GOOD OLD Wednes-day nights.”

“It will be interesting to see how we fare when we go back to the old Wednes-day nights.”

“As for permanent Sunday racing, well once again it’s a first for us.”

But Warrnambool on a Wednesday does have a nice ring about it.

McCullagh has concerns for the dwindling list of trainers in the dairy cattle town and its surrounds.

“When you see trailers turning up with a dozen dogs, you know that it won’t be the same financially nor beneficial to the club as if a dozen local trainers turned

up with their owners to support and watch their own dogs go around.”

“On-course turnover and catering help us immensely, but I’m concerned about the training numbers.”

Talk drifted to why the club can’t get approval from council to build a slipping track, but it’s not from a lack of trying, according to both men.

“We’ve been to council and unfortu-nately there’s nothing available close to the track.”

“You have to have a slipping track close to or on the same property for main-tenance and security reasons.”

The Showgrounds and Victoria Park have been proposed as likely sites, but they’re not big enough, according to Bishop.

Well, the announcement on Warragul Cup night of a new $65K slipping venue at Darnum being approved and financed by GRV, and is only a hop, skip and a jump (five minute drive from Logan Park), will make the Warrnambool trainers green with envy.

Warragul’s Club President, Matthew Height reckons “the facility will be a great benefit for all local trainers, and we are indebted to the local council, and in par-ticular the MLA for Narracan, Garry Black-wood for his input in getting this much needed project up and running.”

Should be interesting once the Warrnambool club switches back to their old former Wednesday night routine, and it might just pay to run a poll as to what the regulars prefer as to their racing op-tions.

As for a much needed slipping track, the boys down in the Western District will have to keep looking.

Doctor, doctor, give me the news IT WASN’T exactly the casualty ward, but Logan Park’s resident veterinary surgeon, Bunyip based Steve Mitchell certainly was under the pump at Warragul’s January 31 meeting.

The fifth race on the program saw Efogi Road, Morotai, Matty’s Gift, Carbon Fibre, Days of Steam and Greysynd Rain all clamor for the good animal doctor’s skill to determine whether they were found to be injured after their 460 metres outing.

Matty’s Gift and Days Of Steam sus-tained injuries to their respective chest muscles and both copped a five day stand-down period.

No injuries could be detected for Efogi Road, Morotai and Matty’s Gift, so that gave the vet time to produce the silver ladle and obtain a urine sample from Greysynd Rain.

I suppose its all in a day’s work for a vet these days.

Old dog for a hard road And pups to the footpath.

You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, and legendary trainer, Graeme Bate will attest to that fact.

Recently anointed as Victoria’s lead-ing trainer for a record 14 times at the

greyhound industry’s award nights at Crown Casino, Bate informed OTL that he will be off the scene for a while due to a training mishap.

“I was trialing some pups at The Meadows and one or two were a little spooky and were reluctant to run into the catching pen.”

“I wasn’t paying 100% attention and didn’t see one of them run around the back of me, and it crashed into my knee.”

“I went down like a bag of spuds and had to wait while my staff had stopped laughing before they could lift me up.”

“I’m forever telling them to be vigilant and be aware of pups crashing into them, but the ‘old bloke’ forgot his own teach-ings.”

“My knee is stuffed, and after a visit to the doctor I was recommended to see a specialist, who confirmed the worst, a knee replacement.”

The huge Lara establishment can now boast “two dicky knees”, foreman Rob Camilleri is known around the traps as “Dicky Knee”, whilst the master himself will go under the knife soon for his “dicky knee”.

Wakey wakey RACE 1 at Wagga on Sunday’s February 5 program saw the wrong magnetic disc over the eight alley.

The pink vested runner was scratched but the green and white striped disc wasn’t appearing over the eight alley.

We’ll get there one day.

How quick GOOD to hear that I’m not the only one hell-bent on getting clubs to be account-able for the data that they print and trans-mit.

A Sunday meeting up north saw war-bler, Steve Hawkins shout “get it fixed” when an impossible first split was posted for a 520 metres event at Albion Park.

The lure obviously triggered the “flying” 5.33 sectional but was rectified on the official results sheet.

See, they do listen, sometimes. Down in Tassie up went a 7.37 split

for Rebel Lee’s race, the sixth at Devon-port on February 7.

They don’t go that quick, and after contacting a senior official, the time was rectified.

Thanks for the “pick up” was the re-sponse.

Then at Ballarat on Wednesday’s February 8 program, two speedsters were accredited with “flying” first splits of 6.34 in the tenth race and 6.44 in the 12th event respectively.

Considering the first sectional record is 6.40, owned by Miss Trew Star, a bril-liant breaker with an abundance of early speed but unfortunately can only get about 400 metres, I would humbly sug-gest that punters don’t pay any attention to these particular times, most likely the lure triggered ’em.

But why weren’t they queried when posted?

GRV have their Watchdog, NGF have a blood hound.

My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as

he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, “Do you know him?” “Yes”, she sighed, “he’s my old boyfriend. I understand

he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn’t been sober since.” “My God,” I said, “who would think a person could go on celebrating that long.”

GOT SOMETHING TO SAY? phone: (03) 9372 0677 Fax: (03) 9375 4002 Email: [email protected]

I wonder if OTL had anything to do with the latest PR from GRV Move over, there’s another one getting in ANOTHER issue arose recently which concerns greyhound welfare.

A trainer was cautioned by Stewards and reminded of his responsibilities regarding the transportation of his greyhounds.

Regardless of whether you are taking two greyhounds to the track or 20 greyhounds, the onus is on the person transporting those canines to be mindful of the welfare of the greyhound at all times.

That’s their primary concern, to ensure those greyhounds arrive at the track in a fit and healthy state.

Now the feedback from the track suggests there were allegations that some greyhounds were “doubled up” in this incident.

“Squeezing” one greyhound in with another is definitely a “no-no”, regardless of the distance to be travelled, and in this case it was a two hour plus trip.

Some think it is a delicate topic, but overloading animal transporters and trailers is bordering on animal cruelty and no leniency should be spared if trainers are found guilty.

GRV has a strict Code Of Practice, which covers a wide range of topics, including kennel inspections, hygiene and record keeping requirements.

GRV’S Dr. Linda Beer, the Animal Welfare Manager, advised OTL that the Code of Practice for the operation of Greyhound Establishments does NOT have a section relating to transportation of greyhounds.

“Transportation of dogs IS covered in the Victorian Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Dogs, and there are also relevant sections of Legislation that apply across all dog breeds.”

Copies of the Codes, Acts and Regulations are all freely available via the Victorian Government websites (Victorian Law Today, Bureau of Animal Welfare website, etc).

I would humbly suggest then that this particular and delicate subject be placed on the next GRV Board’s meeting agenda and a quick alteration to our own COP updated, with a specific mention to the correct method of transportation of our canines.

Or are future similar cases to be referred to the RSPCA or a higher body.

NEW TRANSPORT POLICY Tuesday 14 February, 2012 GRV would like to advise participants that a new transportation policy has been introduced. The full policy is listed below. GRV Transportation of Greyhounds Policy The purpose of the ‘GRV Transportation of Greyhounds Policy’ is to assist participants in providing a safe and healthy environment for their greyhounds whilst being transported by road. Adherence to minimum recommended guidelines will ensure that transport/travel stress and injury are minimised and that greyhounds arrive at their destination in the best possible condition. The following minimum standards apply to: a) Trailers b) Motor Vehicles Trailer Standard 1. Trailer must be clean, and registered if required per Vic Roads standards. 2. Doors, latches and hinges must be in working order and securely fixed to the frame. 3. Doors must have a latching mechanism that prevents the possibility of being opened from inside or other inadvertent opening. It is preferable that the doors are lockable or can be secured externally by way of a pin/bolt that prevents opening. 4. Trailer must have adequate and functioning ventilation. If travelling exceeds one hour, a stop in the journey should be made to allow for inspection and water/fluids consumption. 5. Greyhounds must not be left unattended in the trailer for any extended period. 6. Collars and leads should be placed so as to avoid becoming entangled with the greyhounds. 7. Other than in cases dealing with exceptional circumstances or emergency, greyhounds must be transported in separate compartments. These should be securely fixed and allow for greyhounds to sit, lie down and stand in a natural position without making contact with overhead structures. 8. Trailers must have secure means of attaching to vehicle so as to prevent separation during travelling. Vehicle Standard 1. Vehicle must be clean, registered and roadworthy. 2. Vehicle must have adequate and functioning ventilation. 3. If travelling time exceeds one hour, a break in the journey should be made to allow for inspection and water/fluids consumption. 4. Collars and leads should be placed so as to avoid becoming entangled with the greyhounds. 5. Other than in cases dealing exceptional circumstances or emergency, greyhounds should be afforded sufficient room to enable them to sit, lie down or stand in a natural position and without restriction. 6. Greyhounds must not be left unattended in the vehicle for any extended period. 7. Greyhounds should be safely restrained within the vehicle to avoid distracting the driver or sustaining injury to themselves and occupants in the event of an accident.

GOOD PROMOTIONAL WORK by the NCA saw the Stayers Of Tomorrow Cup final conducted at Betchoice Gardens last Wednesday night.

The solid nominations proved that trainers were looking to test their own against others that have the half-mile journey being on the radar. For the benefit of the future refer-ence, the quinella duo, Lochinvar Vicini and Wilma Stanley both looked to have ticked the right boxes as to where their long-term racing may lie. When the lids rose for the 600 metres trip best to begin was C’Mon Cindy from the two, with Yarramundi Star, Good As Osti and Lochinvar Vicini also well away.

Working into the straight the first time C’Mon Cindy settled in front, but it was short-lived as Lochinvar Vicini did a great job to slot onto the fence before pushing past the leader as they left the straight. Heading to the back Lochinvar Vicini broke clear of the pack, with only Wilma Stanley emerging from a midfield spot.

Nearing the home turn the front run-ner looked to be travelling comfortably, despite Wilma Stanley reducing the mar-gin.

Nearing the post Wilma Stanley had hit top speed and finished powerfully to just miss, as Lochinvar Vicini held on for a half head victory in 35.01, while Carbicide was four lengths away third.

Lochinvar Vicini, by Where’s Pedro out of Smart Betsy, is trained by Robert Smith and has had seven starts for three wins plus two placings.

Justin King prepares Wilma Stanley (Made To Size x Leah Stanley), who has produced two wins and four placings from 10 career starts, whilst Carbicide (Collision x Pasha Appeal), owned and trained by Arthur Armstrong, from 42 starts has notched two wins and 17 plac-ings.

THERE WAS one extra middle dis-tance event on the program, with the

winner, Ate To Much clocking a slightly quicker 34.84, however the three-dog race did give an easy path to victory for this son of Collision. In the smallest line-up witnessed at a TAB meeting for quite a while, we saw Ate To Much begin well from box eight and had easily crossed the others, Heat The Plate and Evie Shiraz. Ate To Much got on the bunny in the straight the first time and quickly opened a big lead, with Heat The Plate holding second spot, while Evie Shiraz was strug-gling to stay in touch. This order stayed the same, with Ate To Much turning for home clear, while Heat The Plate did rally late.

Ate To Much was able to hang on and score by a length over Heat The Plate, with Evie Shiraz a distant 15 lengths astern. From the dam, Ate Bucks, Brad Canty’s Ate To Much has raced 12 times for five wins and three placings.

Heat The Plate (Slater x My Girl Har-riet), trained by Wayne Vanderburg, has had six wins and 10 placings from 31 career starts, whilst Russell Mansley pre-pares Evie Shiraz (Bombastic Shiraz x

Georgie’s Smile) after 49 career starts has collected two wins and nine placings.

A very smart short course sprinter is the John Miles trained Whinging Wrench, who cleared out to win the Schweppes Stake over 400 metres.

The daughter of Big Daddy Cool has won four out of five starts over this course and on this occasion clocked a new per-sonal best 22.67. From box seven, Winging Wrench speared out and raced clear after a few strides, and when her rivals bunched, those punters who took the “tomato sauce” figures were set for an easy col-lect. Whinging Wrench cleared right out as

they approached the home turn, with Tee For Tilly and Emma Robbo battling out for minor prizes.

But Whinging Wrench saluted the judge five and a quarter lengths ahead of Tee For Tilly, with a neck to third placed Emma Robbo. Whinging Wrench (x Tommie’s Plac-ard) has now had 25 career starts for 16 wins and four placings.

Tee For Tilly (Cosmic Rumble x As-teria Gain), prepared by Merv Skinner, from 12 starts to date has won four times with three placings, whilst Emma Robbo (Bit Chili x Rose Robbo), raced by Eileen Robertson, has had 45 career starts that have yielded 10 wins and nine placings.

GARRICK BALE looked a good thing in the Free Entry Thursdays Maiden Final over 515 metres follow-ing his 29.59 BOD heat victory and scored an easy win on a wet track.

Coming from box five as favour-ite at $2.90, the Andrea Dailly trained youngster was away well and had the pace on to lead clearly to the first mark in 5.14, with a wall of chasers in a line for second, that being every other runner bar the pink, Abdon Bale, who was a conspicuous last and wide.

Garrick Bale made his way around to the far turn in 18.93 and was at least 10 lengths ahead of Wild Lucy, with a further two lengths to Allen Darwin, while Abdon Bale was coming into it in fourth spot.

Garrick Bale did it as he liked to the line, romping in by eight and a half lengths to Abdon Bale ($10.30), with a neck to third placed Wild Lucy ($3.50).

Garrick Bale, a son of Go Wild Teddy and Dyna Celeste, clocked 29.78 to make it two wins from two goes at the trip, and three from four overall.

The black youngster was the first leg of a winning treble for owner, Paul Wheeler.

Late blast JET BLAST did best late to narrowly land the Racing Here Wednesday March 14 Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 595 metres.

Drawn in box one as favourite at $2.00, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Poptart walked out of the traps and was last on settling down, before working his way through to fifth with a lap to travel.

Dream Chick was ahead through the first mark, posting 9.21 for the

split, with just over a length on American Magee and a length to Just Coincidence third.

Dream Chick was still the pilot around to the back, getting there in 23.57 with a length lead over Ameri-can Magee, while Jet Blast was get-ting a wriggle on and now third.

Jet Blast had to peel three wide around the final bend but finished best down the outside, getting there by a neck to American McGee ($22.40) and Dream Chick ($10.50), who battled away for third, a neck away.

Jet Blast, raced by Michael Carter, has now won eight of her 41 starts, and in posting 34.80, the black chaser has scored in two of his seven starts at the trip.

Outstayed ’em RED HOT ANDY outstayed his ri-vals when an easy winner of the Ra-dio Sport National Special Event over 715 metres.

After lining up in box five at $5.40, the Wayne Vassallo trained stayer was out fairly and worked his way into third place at the first mark, where Robert Andrew was in charge in 6.19, with Oily in second possie.

Robert Andrew led around to the Judge with a lap to travel in 15.95. holding a length lead on Red Hot Andy and they’d put a gap on the rest. headed by Oily.

Red Hot Andy made his move turning out of the straight. where he railed to the lead and had opened a two lengths break at the third peg, passing by in 30.96, with Robert An-drew second and there was still a goodly margin to Oily third.

Red Hot Andy came away over the concluding stages and scored by six and a half lengths over Robert Andrew ($3.70), with Double Champ ($8.00) getting home for third money, three lengths back.

Red Hot Andy, who posted 42.13 to bring up his first win in three tries at the trip, is a son of Andy Palmer and Redburst.

The Leo Dahl owned chaser has now won 15 of his 58 starts.

By Geordie PERTH CUP finalist, Mepunga Geor-die found the Sandown Greyhounds website Free For All an easier assign-ment and scored in the new PB and Best Of Night 29.57.

Rated on top at $2.30 out of box two, the son of Premier Fantasy and Mepunga Diamond was away only reasonably but quickly moved to sec-ond in the run to the first mark.

Take Me Home was the leader through the first split in a slick 5.00, with Mepunga Geordie just over a length down in second, and Daintree Palace out wide was a close third.

Take Me Home had the speed on along the back, passing the second checkpoint in 18.83, but Mepunga Geordie was now on her outside just a half length down, with six lengths to Where’s Hannibal getting to third

alongside of Daintree Palace. Mepunga Geordie worked hard

on the outside and only found the front just a few metres out, getting there by a neck over a very gallant Take Me Home ($7.10), with Where’s Hannibal ($10.80) picking up third money, a length and a half back.

Mepunga Geordie has now picked up 14 wins in 35 starts, whilst on the track at the trip he’s won four of his 11 outings.

The black chaser is trained at Anakie by Jeff Britton for Barry Smith.

The Mick Carter owned and trained Jet Blast produced the run of the night. After falling out of the 595 metres boxes, the short-priced $2.00 favourite looked a forlorn hope, sitting in last place passing the judge the first time. But he rallied down the back straight and stormed home to pinch a tight head decision in 34.80.

NZ visitor, James Shaw jetted home last Friday after spending a three months working holiday at Robert Britton’s kennels. The affable and well mannered young Kiwi is a credit to his country, and hopefully has picked up a few tips from one of Australia’s top trainers. James handled $2.30 favourite, Mepunga Geordie, raced by Barry Smith and trained by Jeff Britton, who eventually wore down leader, Take Me Home to grab a last-stride neck victory in 29.57.

EVE McGREGOR has been appointed as Chairman of the first independent Board of Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW). Ms McGregor has extensive background as a corporate lawyer in the areas of media rights, licensing and copyright having previously served as a Senior Corporate Lawyer for Tabcorp as well as a Consultant for an Australasian Racing Rights Holder. Most recently she was Senior Legal Counsel at Fox Sports. Ms McGregor replaces Professor Percy Allan AM, who has retired after nine years as Chairman. Speaking following the appointment, Ms McGregor said she and her fellow Board members were looking forward to meeting the challenges that the sport was facing and ensuring its future sustainability. “Initial briefings to the new board have only just begun and we will need to examine the current GRNSW Strategic

Plan ‘Chasing 2020’ and decide on what we need to do to continue the sport’s development,” Ms McGregor said. “A number of foundations have already been laid by the outgoing GRNSW Board that has ensured growth of the greyhound product, including increased pr izemoney and the introduction of TAB C racing.” Ms McGregor added that she would be visiting tracks across the state in the coming months to meet directly with participants. “I am particularly looking forward to getting out and meeting stakeholders so I can actually hear their thoughts on the sport,” she said. “ H o w e ve r , a s w e a r e a n independent Board, we will also be taking direct advice from our primary consultative group - the Greyhound Racing Industry Consultation Group – so I would encourage participants to use that vehicle as a means of ensuring their concerns reach us as well.”

DYNA LACHLAN (Go Wild Teddy x Benden Flex) sired a litter of two dogs and three bitches from Tequila Lass whelped August 2 that were registered by John Frewin, Manager of the Newspaper Syndicate.

Tequila Lass is a daughter of Where’s Hoover and True Brew, who has won 11 of her 59 starts, saluting at Warrnambool over 390 metres in 22.41, as well as scoring there twice over 450 metres with a PB of 25.69.

She saluted over 390 metres at Ballarat in 22.53, won three times there over 450 metres with 25.57 be-ing her quickest, notched two races at Sandown over 515 metres with 30.26 her best and was succesxsful twice over the 520 metres at Cranbourne where 30.97 was her fastest.

The only other member of her litter was Pure Taste (7 wins).

The dam was a smart chaser from a good line, suggesting that these youngsters should make their pres-ence felt on the track.

Lee and Knockabout Betty, scored five times in 17 goes, winning at Bendigo over 430 metres in 24.84 and over 474 metres at Wangaratta in 27.05. She saluted at Horsham over 480 metres in 27.79 and over 525 metres at The Meadows in 30.31, as well as winning at Warrnambool over 450 metres in 25.60.

The other members of her litter were Bet On Lee (7 wins), Black Brett (3 wins), Maverick Lee (16 wins), Spring Creek (7 wins), Spring Lanore (5 wins), Spring Lee (10 wins), Spring Sapphire (13 wins), Spring Supreme (2 wins) and Spring To Excel (6 wins).

The dam had plenty of ability and comes from a litter that won 74 races, which augurs well for the future of these youngsters.

Mogambo GOORNONG breeder, Stephen Gee registered a litter by Mogambo (Where’s Pedro x Zarbo) from Paiges Portrait and the five dogs and four bitches were whelped August 9. Paiges Portrait, a daughter of Black Enforcer and Din’s Portrait, scored once in 16 starts and that was over 650 metres at Shepparton in 38.49. The other successful members of

her litter were Din’s Request (5 wins), General Anders (7 wins), Janilla (3 wins), Private Ling (2 wins), Shades Of Violet (5 wins), Tim Tam Tim (4 wins), Unlimited (11 wins) and Overrate (4 wins). The dam, who was strong, comes from a very successful female line, which says that these youngsters should have a bright future on the track, especially over a bit of ground.

Droopys Maldini DROOPYS MALDINI (Droopys Kewell x Little Diamond) sired a litter of eight dogs and three bitches from Body Trim whelped October 1, registered by Hughesdale breeder, Graeme Euvrard.

Body Trim, a daughter of Bom-bastic Shiraz and Hall’s Turbo, won three of her 12 outings, victorious over 390 metres at Shepparton in 22.82 and twice over 430 metres at Bendigo with a PB of 24.55.

The other members of her litter were Petal Rose (10 wins), Rotating (10 wins), Scary Teeth (5 wins), Shredded Cheese (18 wins) and Snow Crisp (11 wins).

The dam is beautifully bred and comes from a litter that won 57 races, which tells us that these youngsters should win their share of races too.

Where’s Pedro A LITTER registered by Tooradin breeder, Stuart Mills is by Where’s Pedro (Brett Lee x Elusive Rebel) and the three dogs and two bitches whelped October 12 are from Skag-way.

The dam, a daughter of Primo Uno and Awesome Saint, won three of her 12 starts, scoring at Bendigo over 430 metres in 24.14 and also over 390 metres at Shepparton in 22.43, as well as winning at Warragul over 400 metres in 23.02.

The other members of her litter were Black Foot Lass (6 wins), Car-bon Star (4 wins) and Enry Walt (23 wins), whilst a previous litter pro-duced El Haze (14 wins), Jacks On Aces (17 wins), Maree’s Beauty (9 wins), Max Meteor (12 wins), Saint She Sweet (12 wins) and Tornado Tom (17 wins).

The dam comes from a great line, and a pairing that won 117 races, which tells us these youngsters should do very well on the track.

Best Score BEST SCORE (Surf Lorian x Wis-teria Bale) was the sire chosen for Mum’s Legacy by David Jones, Man-ager of the Aleeka Syndicate, and the five dogs and four bitches were whelped August 2.

Mum’s Legacy, a daughter of Trendy Leigh and Aleeka, won four of her 82 attempts, scoring twice over 512 metres at Mt. Gambier with a PB of 30.51 and won at Cranbourne over 520 metres in 31.19, plus she picked up a win at Strathalbyn over 536 me-tres in 31.81.

The other members of her litter were Alistify (2 wins), Storm Prin-cess (4 wins), Trendy Allie (3 wins) and Trendy Liz (6 wins).

Mum’s Legacy has had one litter to date and that was to Texas Gold whelped April 2009, producing Wel-come Lass (1 win).

The dam comes from a great fe-male line and is now proven, suggest-ing that these youngsters should make their presence felt on the track too.

Contagious THAT LITTLE PROBLEM that Sandown had last year must be contagious.

Do you recall that I was curious about how the two reserves for the Shoot-out could have made the track in time in case they’d fluked a start.

Those two chasers, He Knows Uno and Prince Diablo were trained interstate and might have really been hard-pressed to make it to Sandown in time, had they been needed.

Okay, this “disease” has obviously been caught by The Meadows, and it is now worse than ever.

They (The Meadows) have three hand-picked races on; The Temlee, The Rookie Rebel and The Zoom Top.

Even though I’m not a big fan of hand-picked races, these races do stack-up quite well.

However, I know the priority is to try and select the eight best in each division, and for mine they’re pretty close to the money (I mentioned the ones I felt were stiff).

And I guess pick the next best pair to be reserves is the only thought in the Selection Panel’s mind.

Because this year, out of the six re-serves over the three races, they’ve picked five that are trained interstate.

Well, if there’s a scratching in The Temlee, Shereen Bale should be right, but Prince Diablo, well, that’ll be a good effort trying to get from the Sydney area to The Meadows on time.

The two reserves in The Rookie Re-bel, firstly Shintaro Samurai is in the Perth area, sheesh, it’ll be amazing if he can get there in time, however, Cousin Callum’s from the south-west side of Syd-ney, well at least that’s closer.

Now in The Zoom Top, He Knows Uno lives up near the NSW/Queensland border and Mist Opportunity is from the outskirts of Brisbane,

By golly, it’d be a top effort for them to make it down.

As I write this, the info has just come through that Bobby Boucheau is out of The Zoom Top.

Hope someone has remembered to tell Mick Patterson before the Saturday morning.

Look people, sometimes the best intentions get really screwed-up, please bear that in mind next year and try to select local reserves, even if they’re not your original 9th and 10th choice. Forgotten A LOT of us were pretty disappointed to see Shereen Bale sitting on the reserve’s bench in The Temlee. Granted, her most recent form hasn’t been as good as it could have been, and we do harp that the best current form should be considered, however, you also have to take into account what dogs have done on the track at the trip. Shereen Bale was one of only two chasers in contention that had won a Group 1 on the track, albeit the Maturity, a puppy race.

The other Group 1 winner in conten-tion was Godsend, and he too had a puppy Group 1, more recent nonetheless.

Back to Shereen Bale, but on the night she missed a spot in the TOPGUN, she won on the track at the trip, and in fairness, her time wouldn’t have seen her win the Group 1 event that she missed out on.

Following that she won a heat of the Geelong Cup, and between heat and final, took out The Silver Bullet at The Meadows in 29.87 BON.

She was then a very unlucky third to Dyna Tron in the Geelong Cup final and followed that by winning a heat of the Group 1 Melbourne Cup.

As we know, she finished second to Dyna Tron in the Sandown final.

She then went to Brisbane for the Brisbane Cup, running third to eventual winner, Glen Gallon in a heat.

As stated earlier, her recent runs have been a bit below her best (and she’s not the Lone Ranger there), but if winning or placing in Group races (and in particu-lar the last three months) doesn’t carry a bit of weight, why have Group ratings on races?

The same puzzling feeling applies to Shintaro Samurai because the previous time The Meadows that he ran a Group race over 600 metres, he won it.

Now back to recent form, well, if that is the “be-all end-all” criteria, Bobby Boucheau hadn’t raced for three months yet he was picked for The Zoom Top (and I don’t have a problem with that) but it smacks of some kind of a double-standard doesn’t it? Yes and no I JUST received notification of the three greyhounds that are in contention for the Australian GOTY.

As you may recall, I gave the nod to Radley Bale over Bobby Boucheau and Dyna Tron in my awards.

In the AGRA ones, Bobby Boucheau and Dyna Tron are two of the three, the other is Dashing Corsair.

If you want the winner on logic, then it’s Dyna Tron.

He beat Bobby Boucheau in the Vic-torian GOTY and that stayer won three Group 1 races to Dashing Corsair’s one, so logically Bobby Boucheau should be second.

See how easy that was to resolve! Nearly there RADLEY BALE edged himself closer to the half a million dollars in prizemoney with a brilliant win in the Group 2 Launceston Cup final.

The four year-old chaser was having his 97th career run when he fronted in box three for the $40,000 to the winner race.

He exploded from the traps like a dog half his age and was never going to lose from thereon.

In ticking-up his 35th career win and first Group victory since the 2011 Golden Easter Egg, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Minkara Bale took his prizemoney tally to $494,493.

The Paul Wheeler owned, Graeme Bate trained chaser only needs to be on the podium at the end of The Temlee to become only the fifth chaser to pass half a million dollars in Australian racing his-tory. Tron also DYNA TRON is another chaser closing in on the half a million dollars in stake-money. He currently has $423,518 in the bank and a win in The Temlee would take his tally to within less than $2,000 of what is now becoming a benchmark for cham-pions.

On his side is age, as he has plenty of time to reach that milestone and could do it without actually winning.

Running a place in The Temlee and the Australian Cup could see the son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale pass that mark.

With the prizemoney that’s up for grabs in the upcoming Group 1 sprint races, Dyna Tron could easily claim High Earner’s Australian stakemoney record of $610,070.

After Radley Bale and Dyna Tron there’s a huge gap to the next currently racing greyhound on the ‘Stakemoney Table’, but should any dog be able to win The Temlee, the Australian Cup and the Golden Easter Egg, besides what they already have done then they can add more than a cool half a million or so. Not enough dogs YET ANOTHER Group race has come up short for entries. The crazy way The Meadows run the Australian Cup might deter some trainers from entering, because as it stands, you may have to win three races to claim it. Then again, you may only have to win two.

However, the giant flaw in the whole way it is run is this… if your dog is not in The Temlee or The Rookie Rebel (or possibly The Zoom Top) and you’re one

of the 56 chosen greyhounds, then you can’t have a race on the track the week before the “real” heats are run.

Talk about disadvantaged, at least the lesser thought of chasers getting a go around the track in what was a cut-throat elimination heat.

However, strike cut-throat from that scenario, as they never got enough of the lesser-lights entered to run eight of those heats.

In a nutshell, the Club wants 120 entries bottom line, and even with the bizarre way the race is run, the prizemoney is good… too good to cut your nose off and spite your face over. Too many dogs LAMENTING the fact that there were not enough dogs to fill all the spots up for grabs in the Australian Cup elimination heats brings me to some of our more popular country tracks. Maybe it’s because Bendigo is closed or perhaps because people think it’s one of Australia’s best tracks, but Ballarat is certainly proving popular with trainers.

The rating of being one of Australia’s best tracks has been bestowed upon Ballarat for many decades now.

I actually think it is certainly Austra-lia’s best ‘big’ track, and I think Sandown is now our best two-turn track, with Hor-sham a cross between the two and fan-tastic.

However, I have not been to or raced on every track in Australia, so if you’d care to write in and extol the virtues of a venue, please do so. Some funny stuff I KNOW one trainer who’d been trying to quit smoking for ages. He’d tried just about everything going an finally he got on to the nicotine-flavoured chewing gum. It worked: He quit the fags now he reckons he’s addicted to the gum. A few doggie blokes suffer from gout, and I told some of a natural cure that I had used that worked for me.

One bloke’s “missus” thanked me for passing on the cure but said she wishes I hadn’t, as her other half now complains about many things, whereas before it was just about “my aching toe”. Same thing with arthritis, again I found a natural cure for it, and never to be one to pass any information on to my friends without firstly finding out if it worked, tried it on myself. Well, the arthritic joint I had on my finger not only does not hurt any more, I have full mobility back in the joint and I’m amazed at how fast it came good. I wish I’d known this sooner, as one of my favourite greyhounds, who got to live until nearly 13, had bad arthritis and by golly, if it works on man, it probably works on beast.

Oh, that same natural remedy also can be used to lose weight, and again, it works; well it has for me, I’ve “choked” five kilograms since New Year’s Day (that was one of my resolutions).

Oh, and I had the wife of a trainer email me saying exactly the same thing.

Speaking of wives of trainers, going back a few years one trainer had a wife that seemed a bit better than us, if you know what I mean.

Not that she wasn’t nice or anything, she was lovely to speak to, but somehow she always seemed out of place on a greyhound track.

Anyway one night, because her hus-band couldn’t get a catcher, she had to perform the duties.

Now I don’t mind saying she was dressed to the nines, but with catcher’s lead in hand on what had been a rather wet night, she made her way to the catch-ing pen with the rest of us that unfortu-nately had catching duties.

Well, to say her shoes were the wrong choice of footwear for a wet track was stating the obvious, as she went bottom end up in the mud whilst trying to catch her greyhound, who seemed on for a game.

Dead set, three wharfies standing nearby blushed!

Yes, the air was that thick with exple-tives.

Lastly was the dog trainer, who owned a treadmill walking machine.

He swore by them for getting his dogs as fit as can be.

Sadly, because he wasn’t doing the

walking that he should have, he decided he’d buy a human-type treadmill (this was one of the old-fashioned types before computerised ones came in).

Anyhow, he set it all up and was casually standing on it reading the in-struction manual.

Why you need instructions on how to walk is beyond me.

Anyhow, it got to the part that said turn switch to ‘On’.

Perhaps the manual should have read, make sure you have yourself in the correct position and have one hand hold-ing onto the frame when you turn the thing on, not standing on it sideways with a fag in your mouth and holding the man-ual in your hand.

Yes, a real good sideways ‘shove off the back of the machine’ into the wall.

No, it wasn’t me, but I ended up buy-ing his dog walking machine from him. Newsworthy I HAVE to admit that I get some great emails at times.

One that just came in had me in tears; tears of laughter that is.

It was from a trainer sharing a great story.

Sadly, I can’t put it in here. But if you do have something that’s

newsworthy, please let me know. Your Say “Back Innit” asked, “I’ve just come back into racing after a five-year break, where the hell is Wangaratta?” Well, start in the Melbourne CBD and find your way out of the city and onto the West Gate Freeway. Follow that to the Princes Highway and travel around 65 kilometres south-west, you’ll see a sign pointing you to where it is. For those who aren’t familiar with the area, you can find the Wangaratta track inside the new Geelong track (that’s an Industry joke that no one is laughing about). “Pretty Poor” remarked, “Shereen Bale, a Maturity winner and a Melbourne Cup runner-up not good enough to get a run. Well the eight that are in must be abso-lute superstars.” You’re nearly as sarcastic as I am....hehe. “Poor Performer” asked, “I noticed you wanting to know why Stewards never asked a trainer why his dogs had im-proved, but what about these dogs that run 25 lengths last, start after start; why aren’t their trainers being asked why their dogs run so poorly?” Well, it really beats me because some of these dogs really need to be put on Satisfactory Trials, in my opinion, for how poorly they run. Fair dinkum, there is no way known to man that they’d ever be cleared, as the bottom line is some are around 20 lengths too slow for Tier 3. Again, if people are prepared to feed them, train them, look after them then that’s okay, but I see quite a few get-ting runs whilst better performed chas-ers are missing out, and that, to say the least is extremely annoying and must be very frustrating for other trainers. “Inya Dreams” with, “Little Mother would not see where half our stayers went, she may have won a lot of races over there, but I could have beaten the dogs that she beat.” You could have beaten them? I’d almost pay money to see that....hehe. This week’s Teaser USING the first name of the dam and the last name of the sire to get a racing name is one way of going.

See if you can identify these eight Group 1 winners, had their owners cho-sen that formula. 1. Winsome Shiraz 2. Kazar Flo 3. Sweet Pedro 4. Sensation Shiraz 5. Minkara Cool 6. Horizon Flo 7. WHITE BLOOD CELLS THE FOUNDATION for the immune system is the white blood cells, especially the lymphocytes. Lymphocytes roam through the body by leaving the blood, entering and migrating through the tissues, then returning to the blood via the lymphatic vessels in most of the tissues.

Their role is to detect the presence of foreign invaders or material and then to produce antibodies or actively destroy the invader, as well as to alert the rest of the body to their presence. These lymphocytes can be broadly separated into two groups, B cells and T cells.

The B cell group, which make anti-bodies against foreign substances (these foreign substances are usually proteins called antigens), are the major defence against bacteria.

The T cell group contain lymphocytes that directly attack fungi, viruses and some bacteria are responsible for allergic reactions, causing the rejection of foreign material, and destroying tumor-producing cells.

Lymphocytes in the adult greyhound are made in the bone marrow, spleen, and in lymph nodes.

The latter are small aggregates of tissue scattered throughout the body in

strategic locations, ie. around the base of the limbs and around tubular organs of the body.

Lymph nodes monitor body fluids (lymph) for the presence of infectious or foreign bodies.

When bacteria invade the body they soon encounter the lymph nodes.

In the lymph nodes there is a rapid activation of the immune system and an increase in the production of lymphocytes and anti-bodies.

Antibodies are chemically specific molecules (proteins) that are made by the B group lymphocytes to attach to bacteria, viruses or foreign material.

When an antibody attaches to a bacterium, for example, it signals to other cells in the blood and tissue – the neutrophils and the monocytes – that a danger is present and directs them to destroy and/or engulf these foreign agents of disease.

The molecules of protein that compose either the cell wall or some part of the invading microorganisms are called antigens and are the site of recognition of

that organism by the immune system. It is common for greyhounds

suffering from infections to have a higher thirst level, because of the osmotic drawing power of all the extra particles in the bloodstream.

Both the B and T groups of cells have specific lymphocytes that are called “memory cells”.

These “memory cells” do not initially destroy invading agents but carry within them a memory for the antigen of the foreign invader or substance to which the greyhound was exposed.

For example, if a bacterium enters the body and is destroyed by the immune system, these memory cells develop and are programmed to remember that bacterium and its particular proteins or antigens.

Then, if that type of bacterium invades the body again, these memory cells respond more rapidly, and with a greater immune response than before, to eliminate the bacterium from the body.

This is the basis of vaccination programs – to develop “memory cells” against the most common and dangerous bacteria and viruses.

HEATS of the $15,000 Solo Summer Chase over the middle distance high-lighted the Cannington program on Saturday night.

Roxy Mac stepped up to the 642 metres for the first time in fine style for trainer, Kylie McLennan to be the fastest qualifier in 37.44, with the first two greyhounds from each heat progressing to the final. The favourite in the race was the Keith Harding trained Pakenham Lass, with Roxy Mac kept safe at $4.30 despite her tricky mid-pack draw.

The favoured runners found themselves at opposite ends of the pack through the first turn, with Roxy

Mac sprinting well for McLennan. The daughter of Where’s Pedro

and Delia Bale took the bell in a slick 11.61 when three lengths to the good of Bashy’s Boy. The sprinter hit the back straight four lengths clear and looked com-fortable, with the only question being her stamina to see out the extra 110

metres. Passing release point in 25.37,

Roxy Mac now had Arrigato in hot pursuit, with Pakenham Lass making a run, albeit too late. Arrigato closed the winning break to three lengths at the judge, with Pakenham Lass rattling home a length away third, but missing a place in the final.

It was a solid effort by Kylie McLennan’s Roxy Mac, who was on debut At the trip,

The win was her eighth from 24 starts and the 25 months-old bitch has already amassed $28,000.

Chase warms up IN THE OPENING Summer Chase heat the Greg Martin trained Serena To Excel was all the rage at $2.70 and began like a rocket to lead from box one.

The favourite was two lengths clear of Big Jo King, who was on debut over the middle distance on the back of placings behind Hot Irish and Glen Gallon in the Perth Cup series. Big Jo King took over heading to the back, running a good section to be three lengths clear of Reef Rider and Freeway Fame into the final turn.

The Keith Harding trained Free-way Fame hit the lead three-wide into the home straight and blitzed away.

A $4.20 hope, he finished three lengths clear of Kalden Abubo, who sprouted wings to finish two lengths clear of Big Jo King. Freeway Fame recorded 37.56, just a half length outside his personal best, whilst his stake earnings passed $58,000, with this being his tenth career victory. THE THIRD ROUND was a muddling affair that was won in a slow 38.24 by Mortal Combat for Sam Sammut.

The big white and black dog, who led early, was then headed, dropping to fourth along the back before seeing the bunny for home and easing be-tween runners to record a length win over Khafra. FORMER Victorian, Grand Gar-con debuted in fine style for Jayson Gunning by taking out the final heat of the Summer Cup in a smart 37.52.

The son of Where’s Pedro and Petite Mamselle, a last start Sandown winner, was kept safe at $3.30, with Kalden Aurora the $2.30 popular elect. Grand Garcon, dressed in the green singlet, began well and crossed to be outside Hogmania in the early going, whilst the favourite copped a hammering and was in the rear half of

the field. The newcomer to WA took a two lengths break out of the home straight in 11.88, but Tetrahedron was still on the leader’s tail but not closing the gap along the back straight, with Hogmania starting to come into con-tention.

However, all was looking good for a debut WA win for Grand Gar-con, who turned for home five lengths clear of Hogmania and main-tained that advantage to the line. This week’s final sees likely leader, Roxy Mac in the blue vest.

She is likely to share favouritism with Grand Garcon, who was impres-sive when on debut.

But I am selecting Freeway Fame to take advantage of the check vest and position herself close enough to the leaders to unwind over the top of them in the $15,000 final.

Got a dime, buddy? All the buzz around Man Dime ($3.30) got a little louder this week when Sean Kavanagh’s youngster maintained his unbeaten record and

took out the A1 Hardware & Salvage Great Western on Friday night.

Six straight wins have seen the son of Exceptional and Claire Bird take his earnings to just short of $9,000 for his owner trainer. It was a three-way go in the pre-race market, with Bill Skipper’s Spe-cial Annie a narrow $3.20 favourite over Man Dime, while Belle Special, also trained by Skipper, was at $4.00.

The 405 metres boxes flew open and the favourites were all away cleanly. Man Dime kept a good line from box four but had made it across to the paint to lead at the 302 metres boxes with a 6.58 opening stanza.

Mid-way through the turn it looked a race in two, with Man Dime two lengths to the good of Belle Spe-cial, with Chaser Lesson a further four lengths adrift. Belle Special was following in the leader’s slipstream as they entered the long run home, however, Man Dime maintained his break and per-fect race record to win by two lengths in a new race record time of 22.52. The 31 kilogram black dog keeps finding a little something extra with each outing and looks to have a promising career over both sprint distances.

Kavanagh is likely to give the youngster a short let-up this week before taking on Provincial company in the Kanyana Cup Friday week.

Shenae Fitzgerald, who was celebrating her 18th birthday at Cannington last weekend, and together with Tania Povey, they joined Roxy Mac, Ron and Kylie McLennan trackside for Joe Mulder’s photo shoot.

In a muddlingly run Grade 4 over 642 metres at headquarters, Sam Summut’s Mortal Combat overcame heaps of bother to score in 38.24.

After Gloves Are Off had shown good early pace, Rumble Hero (8) powered home to share line honours in a 530 metres Grade 5 at Cannington, posting 30.97 for the 530 metres trip last Saturday night, whilst hot on their heels was Delko.

Thanks very much to NGF for ex-cellent coverage of the Perth Cup Carnival. It certainly contributed consid-erably to the success of our big events. Credit also to Laurence Torpy for the stories he provided which were well written.

Sharp success The Meadows February 14 RARELY at a midweek Meadows meeting do you see the track extremely fast, but last Wednesday afternoon such was the case.

With the huge Australian Cup carnival commencing just a few nights later, we watched as Lara middle distance dog, Take It Home won a Grade 5 in 34.49 to notch his second win at the track and distance.

After exiting the inside alley at the 600 metres ‘bend’ start, Take It Home ($10.70) was beaten for early pace by What An Effort, who was still ahead with a lap to go, posting a fast 8.93 split.

Down the back the race hotted up, with Take It Home running to the front then clocking 22.04 to be two lengths ahead of Foot Tapper, who’d run past What An Effort ($17.20).

Although Foot Tapper ($3.,20) made a race of it, Take It Home scored by two lengths, and there was two and three quarter lengths to third placed What An Effort, whilst the $3.00 favourite, Noaki Pace ran a ‘shocker’ but fin-ished fourth, beaten 17½ lengths by the win-ner. Yoshiimitsu was on his game plan and proved far superior to his rivals in the Radio Sport National Maiden over 525 metres, in what was a rough-house affair, with both Fawn Chow and Mega Giant coming to grief on the first turn.

Springing from box eight smartly, Yo-shimitsu ($3.80) easily found the front and led throughout, scoring by a hollow 11¼ lengths in 30.32, defeating Surging Pass ($11.20), with third placed Ello Ellay ($2.80 fav) two and a quarter lengths adrift.

Beginning fast from the eight gate, Shanlyn Peanut was the $3.60 popular elect and showed plenty of early pace to easily find the fence.

It was all smooth sailing from thereon, as the daughter of Slater and Shanlyn Supreme posted fast splits in her 10 lengths blitz over Risk It All ($3.60 fav), while third placed Sisco Big ($24.20) was a length and three quarters further astern.

Going to the dogs! DUBAI’S Crown Prince, Hamdan bin Moham-med Al Maktoum, who owned Melbourne Cup winners Jeune and At Talaq, is going into the dog racing business.

The world’s foremost greyhound track builder, Sydney’s Brian Barrington has con-structed a $5 million circuit in Dubai, funded by the prince. The intention is to have saluki races, sup-ported by greyhound events, at Sunday barbe-cue gymkhanas for Dubai’s elite.

Barrington was astounded at the re-quested specifications of the track, which, at a circumference of 1020 metres, is the world’s biggest.

“They intend obtaining greyhounds from Ireland and the UK, but the opening is some way off,” Barrington said. “The prince is also keen for me to construct a straight training track.”

********** FLOODING that ripped through the Richmond area last week, devastated local greyhound breeders and trainers.

Joanne Zammit had 12 greyhounds on her Londonderry property and expected the worst when an SES crew took her by boat to her kennels.

“The dogs’ kennels were submerged but our greyhounds were up on their beds with the water lapping around their bodies,” Zammit told NGF.

“SES people made two trips by boat and collected them all safely.”

“They were fantastic, as was GRNSW Steward, Wayne Billett.”

“He delivered hessian bags for the dogs to sleep on and bags of kibble for them to eat.”

“Other local trainers Barbara Spackman, Tracey Hurst, Pauline Moran and Vic Sultana also assisted.”

“All my fencing has gone and my trialling track has disappeared.”

“I'm in a mess and won't be racing any dogs for a while, but I’m insured so will sur-vive.”

“Many others are worse off because some had no insurance.”

Matthew Brunker, who trains, boards and rears, said it was a “miracle” that he lost only one dog.

“There was over a metre of water in the kennels and I had to put pups in my bedroom and dogs in other parts of the house,” Brunker said.

“Allof my sand runs were destroyed, but I’m young enough to bounce back; it will be tougher for older people.”

Steward Wayne Billett said, :I was in the area on ear branding and kennel inspection duty when the flood hit.”

“`The current was so fast at Matthew Brunker’s place that the dogs being pulled out of their kennels by the SES were being swept across to a boat, where more SES people were plucking them out of the water.”

“The tragedy is that once the water sub-sided, these people had virtually nothing left.”

********** ALL TOMMIE’S record breaking Gosford 400 metres win on Tuesday underscores the loss caused when a snake killed his dam, Tom-mie's Placard.

Tommie’s Placard won 15 races from 280 metres to 520 metres and was runner-up in a Tweed Heads Galaxy. Her progeny also includes Black War-horse, who broke two track records amongst his 30 wins, Laurie’s Placard, who won four straight at Wentworth Park, Chasing Glory and Newcastle Silver Bullet winner, Tominate.

Jet setting Logan Park GM Sean Stanton received the red carpet treatment whilst overseas taking in the sights of the Palm Beach Kennel club. The Yanks looked after the part owner of gun stayer Shimaguni, giving him a personalised guided tour of the Florida club. Dennis Bicsak, Director of the American Greyhound Track Operators Association and the club’s GM Jeff Prince were the genial hosts.

Debbie showed ’em Grafton February 16 WHILST LOCAL business identity, Des Win-ters may have been unable to make it to the track to watch his duo, Fagus Valley and Banjo Valley do battle, his wife, Debbie certainly was there.

And she was full of cheer after the litter-mates both scored impressive victories.

Fagus Valley opened the day with an all the way victory in the Sedgers Reef Hotel Stake over 305 metres.

Jumping cleanly from box one, Fagus Valley was able to hold the early lead, and while Sarah’s Silence tried her heart out in second place, she was unable to reel-in the pacesetter.

The time of 17.45 was a good indication as to why her rivals couldn’t catch up.

Fagus Valley stepped out as the $2.30 favourite and defeated Sarah’s Silence by a length and a quarter, with Tranquil Lily third.

Banjo Valley made it a winning double in the Bailey & Gough Real Estate Stake over 480 metres.

Banjo Valley, the $4.60 second pick, and he waged a war with race favourite, Vibrant Cloud for the majority of the trip.

After gaining the upper hand shortly be-fore the post, Banjo Valley scored by a length to Vibrant Cloud in 27.93, with Fiddy Sense third.

It takes a smart greyhound to break the 23-seconds barrier for the 407 metres at Graf-ton, and trainer, Vicki Wisener was under-standably rapt with the run of her greyhound, Black Attitude, who did just that.

Beautifully drawn out in box eight in the Grafton District Services Club 5th Grade, Black Attitude showed brilliant early acceleration to assume the pacesetting role prior to the first turn, and although tracking wide all the way the turn, he was still able to clock 22.98, which was the fastest time of the day.

Black Attitude defeated Who’s Asner, who also put up a good late run, while Rash Roger wound up third.

Yorklea trainer, Keith Anderson has a very handy pup on in his kennels.

And judging by his impressive Maiden win in the Clarence Valley Sheds Stake, Sudoku Glider is something pretty special.

At big odds for most of the betting, he did firm late to start at $8.70, but he raced like a short-priced favourite.

Sudoku Glider clocked a fast 23.08 to beat Braxon’s Best and third placed Larry Trick.

In fact, the other Maiden winner over 407 metres was every bit as impressive.

The Reg Gardoll trained Cool Leaf atoned for a luckless second last week by scoring in 23.10 in the Westlawn Finance sponsored event after leading from start to finish, downing Trick Killer and Big Sandpit.

Julie King and Jim Galloway looked to have a strong hand in the Wauchope to Graf-ton Final with Mjala Fourche and Krystal King rating highly due to their local experience.

They entered the final as the only grey-hounds to have tasted success on the Grafton circuit and went within a whisker of a one-two finish.

Mjala Fourche finished too well for Dilston Opal in 23.58, with Krystal King just a half head away third.

There was some interesting banter be-tween husband and wife, with each claiming the glory when Classic Monaro took out the Village Green Hotel Stake.

Paying a juicy $10.00 on the NSW TAB, Classic Monaro exited the inside alley and gave nothing else a chance.

Once in front he was too good for Stake-out, which produced a nice Grafton debut, with

Clowning About next past the post. Wyrallah trainer, Gary Friend expected

better things from his kennel star, Lucky Star when she was unplaced in early in the day.

However, he received some consolation when Lost For Words showed his customary early dash and helding on to win the Kleenheat Gas Stake, which was the final race on the program.

Pretty Sarah finished well for second, while Bit Breezy also made ground on the fence for third.

Other winners on the day were Elly Mae Trick, which clocked a fast 27.32 for the 480 metres journey in the Highland Petfoods Stake for Darryl Schafer, Excel Like Life, who de-buted in style for Roger O’Neill in the Shiralee Produce Maiden and Sure Destiny, who proved too good in the Caldwell Electrical Stake for Shane Lippel. - Grafton Guru

Beyond Brooklyn, a daughter of Where’s Pedro and Avon Lyla May, has won five of her 28 starts to date. Why Not Happy posted 29.86 to score and all the way win in heat one of the 520

metres Restricted Win Stake. After lining up in box two at $6.20, the

black galloper accounted for Jodie Rose ($1.50 fav) and Gangbusters ($12.60), with a length and a quarter both ways being the margins.

Why Not Happy was the first leg of a winning litter double for Gail and Greg Carter.

Why Not James completed the litter dou-ble for Gail and Greg by registering the new PB of 25.03 to score in the 440 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Ice Trucker completed the litter double for Norm by registering the new PB of 30.08 to score in a 515 metres Grade 5.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Greys Lemon Ice came from box five at $9.60 to beat his litter sister, Cloak Of Gold ($17.40) by a length and three quarters, with Allegiance ($16.60) picking up the skinny end of the prize, a neck in arrears.

Hungry Thirsty was down in grade in heat three of the 595 metres Novice, and at the generous quote of $15.30, was successful.

Coming from box three, the Graham Nicoll owned and trained chaser led throughout to score by a length over Talanjee Maggie ($9.60), with a head to third placed Squeeky Taylor ($7.70).

Hungry Thirsty, a son of Where’s Pedro and Carlinford Tena, stopped the clock at 34.73.

The acrobatic and evasive display performed by fallen chaser Quo Vadis resulted in the first race at Sandown Park on Sunday being declared a No Race by GRV Stewards. Frantic efforts by track staff in front of the 515 metres boxes couldn’t capture the wayward youngster. Track snapper Paul Munt’s graphic recollection of how the mishap unfolded is depicted in these three top photos. Sadly Quo Vadis will be off the racing scene for quite some time as the white and brindle sprinter was found to have suffered a fractured right shoulder in the tumble.

Toe Cutter is becoming a straight track specialist, with four wins from as many starts at the Don Road venue. Page 64 – National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

YOU HAVE TO be at Ipswich on qualify-ing trial night to understand the excitement that surrounds the start of the Vince Curry Maiden series each year.

The race has been run since 1984 to honour one of thoroughbred racing’s great callers.

Katie’s Lad (Ungwilla Lad - Katie’s Disco), won that first running for the late Peter Coleman (a full brother from a later mating to training great, Jim Coleman).

Katie’s Lad was a litter brother to Kirsty’s First, one of the truly great stayers this country has seen.

The night she ran past champion, Na-tional Lass on her way to victory in the Na-tional Distance final at the Gabba will always be a great memory of this wonderful sport for me.

Some pretty good dogs have won it since then… Captain Standby, Token Prince, Just The Best, Runaway Sally, Vizcaya, High Earner and Auriga Fox.

There has been a smattering of talk around the tracks up here in Queensland that the series is too tough.

Qualifying heats, quarter-finals, semis and then the final are a test for generally what is a group of unraced maidens.

But the Vince Curry is a test of a good young dog.

Many greats have fallen by the wayside, as Paua To Burn couldn’t make the final.

This year’s line-up is pretty impressive. For all those potential greyhound breeders who believe they have just as much chance of producing a high class race dog by using

inferior race bitches, I suggest you take a very strong look at this group of finalists. They are: HARRY THE GREAT (Where’s Pedro - Queen Lauryn) If this bloke was a thoroughbred yearling, what would he bring at auction?

His dam, Queen Lauryn was the domi-nant bitch of her time.

She won the Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup and Sapphire Crown, as well as the Queensland Futurity, WA All Stars, Darwin Cup and ran no fewer than six track records.

Who will forget her 29.44 run at Wen-tworth Park!

No one ever expected Surf Lorian’s Ips-wich track record to be broken until Queen Lauryn came along to run 30.01.

Harry The Great is one of two pups pro-duced by Queen Lauryn in this litter.

The bitch from this litter will not race. Harry The Great is bred on a cross some-

thing similar to Mogambo. Queen Lauryn has since whelped to Surf Lorian. PRINCE OF TIDES (Surf Lorian - Deb On Air) Dam, Deb On Air, a 520 metres and 600 me-tres winner at Albion Park, has already been a handy producer for her owner, Deb Simon. Maywyn’s Fury, from her first Surf Lorian mating, made an Ipswich Gold Cup final.

Prince Of Tides has as his third dam the former legendary stayer, Boronia Blossom (Wary Suspect - National Queen), who twice won the National Distance title and also won an Albion Park Gold Cup.

The pedigree of Prince Of Tides is inter-esting.

He is bred on the successful Surf Lorian/Fortified Speed cross that has already pro-duced the very smart race bitch, Jean Jeannie.

It brings in a cross of Worth Doing and his brother, Wary Suspect, as well as the half-sisters Tenthill Flyer and Boronia Blossom. ASTON CARMELITA (Pure Octane - Miss Elly Mint) The dam was something else. She twice won the Run for the Roses, the Battle of the Sexes and Christmas Cup, whilst she also landed the Mega Maiden and Gosford Cup, as well as running a couple of track records.

Aston Carmelita has already established a Maiden class record at Ipswich during this series.

Bay Road Queen is duplicated in this pedigree, but Aston Carmelita also carries four crosses of Amerigo Man.

There are six crosses of his sire, Brother Fox five through sons and one important one via a daughter. AMADEUS STRIKES (Bombastic Shiraz - Forgetful Lucy) The dam was a fast Nowra Maiden winner who was placed at Wentworth Park, but her biggest claims to fame is that she is a half-sister to Group 1 winners Lochinvar Marlow and Godsend (both by Bombastic Shiraz).

It made sense to put Forgetful Lucy (a daughter of Larkhill Jo) to Bombastic Shiraz to recreate Lochinvar Marlow and Godsend.

Second dam, Sensation Lee has a cross of Wee Sal and Awesome Assassin, both of

whom combine perfectly with lines in Bombas-tic Shiraz’s pedigree. JAKE’S THUNDER (Collision - Tad Smarter) This is a very good damline that traces directly to Temora Lee, the dam of Temlee.

Tad Smarter was Albion Park Greyhound Of The Year, winning 22 races, 14 of them at Albion Park.

She was a flying machine sprinter and has become a better than average brood bitch.

Her son, Dance A Jig (x Just The Best) won last year’s Vince Curry Maiden final.

This pedigree was designed by Pedi-grees By Design to incorporate a 3x4 double to Malawi’s Prince in a very special position, and bring in a double to New Tears 4x4 through son and daughter.

Jake’s Thunder ran 30.49 to win a semi, which is scorching around Ipswich. BRAIN STORMER (Bombastic Shiraz - Whirly Storm) The dam is from the famed Top Priority female family.

Whirly Storm was an outstanding sprinter, winning the Group 2 Lismore Gold Cup, whilst she was also a finalist in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup, National Futurity and Group 3 Casino Cup.

This is her first litter. The mating doubles Malawi’s Prince 3x4

via a daughter and son. The pups from this mating were always

going to sprint, and sprint fast. Reg Hazelgrove would have been hoping

that Bombastic Shiraz would put strength into

this litter. The double of Malawi’s Prince made sure

that would never happen. A feature of the pedigree is a strong link

between Shining Chariot and his sister, Cen-trefire. BROOK LEE (Brett Lee - Miss Brook) No better bred greyhound is racing today.

Miss Brook, later to become a champion stayer, made the Vince Curry Maiden final as a pup then went on to be Queensland Grey-hound Of The Year after wins in the Group 1 Albion Park Gold Cup, The Zoom Top, Sale Cup, etc, etc, etc in her 38 wins.

Miss Brook has two daughter strains of Pretty Short in her pedigree.

Brett Lee brought in a son of Pretty Short via New Tears. RUN BOLT RUN (Bombastic Shiraz - Blue Heaven) This dog is interesting.

His dam was a Mackay Cup finalist, winning 12 races, four of them at the old Gold Coast track.

She was also an Australian show cham-pion.

A feature of this pedigree is a cross of Zimbabwe with her litter brother, Chief Din-gaan, along the tail female line on both sides of the pedigree.

Chief Dingaan and Zimbabwe are found intensely in-bred in the pedigree of former star sprinter, Little Denver and his brood bitch great sister, National Dingaan.

Racing Queensland Hall of Fame inductees Three worthy industry contributors were inducted into the Racing Queensland Hall of Fame, Ron Ball, the Bellamy family and Bogie Leigh, sponsored by Contour Consulting Engineers.

Ron Ball Flying Amy was an Australian Hall of Fame inaugural inductee and now her trainer Ron Ball enters the Racing Queensland Hall of Fame. Ball has trained four Queensland Greyhounds of the Year. They are Flying Amy in 1994 and 1995, Boronia Blossom in 1996 and Springtime Magic in 2001. The former Ipswich coal miner, now fulltime greyhound trainer, has trained the winners of four National Championships. They are Flying Amy (1995 Sprint), Metz Magic (2011 Sprint) and Boronia Blossom (1995 and 1996 Distance). Boronia Blossom is the only greyhound to win two National Distance Championships in the race’s history of 42 years. Winning events twice has been a canny knack for Ball. Take Flying Amy for example. She won the 1994 and 1995 Gold Coast Cups. Anyone who saw her second win in that race will never forget her explosive speed out of box six to lead a crackerjack field a merry chase home. In her first Gold Coast Cup win, Flying Amy beat brilliant sprinters Star Title and New Fox into the placings. Say the name ‘Ron Ball’ and most people will instantly think of Flying Amy. But what might be called the ‘bread and butter’ greyhounds get just as much attention at the Ball kennels as the superstars. Winning races virtually week in, week out has seen Ball win two Albion Park training premierships, in 2008 and 2009.

Bellamy family The Bellamy family’s greyhound racing involvement spans more than 50 years in the industry. Frank Bellamy, his wife Mavis and son Peter have enjoyed ongoing success which started when Frank was a greyhound trainer in Grafton, then later at Ballina and the Gold Coast. Frank’s top performer in his early days was Spotted Lightning. He bought the dog at Lismore when it was beaten in a maiden race. Frank sensed that there was something amiss and he thought he could fix the problem. Fix it he did. He took Spotted Lightning to Capalaba for a maiden race and a good old fashioned betting plunge. In a field of 12, Spotted Lightning romped home. The margin was given as 20 lengths but some say it was more like 30. Spotted Lightning won his next start, a new race called the Tweed 1000 at the old Razorback track near Tweed Heads. He won that by four lengths. Frank Bellamy won six challenge races with Spotted Lightning, including the Commonwealth Cup Invitation at Sydney’s Harold Park in 1961. Frank did all the muscle work on his greyhounds and was regarded as an expert in

that area. His tool of trade was quite simple, hot vinegar. Peter Bellamy, when training to be a school teacher, purchased a lightly raced bitch named Coven’s Memory. She went on to become one of Queensland’s fastest race bitches of her time. She broke the Tweed Heads 420 metres record in the Legacy Cup and broke the Gabba 420 metres record. Frank died just before those two record runs. Mavis Bellamy put Coven’s Memory to imported sire Waverley Supreme. That litter produced Supreme Memory who in turn became a great broodbitch herself. Her progeny included top Gabba stayer Gary’s Hope and Queensland Cup winner Coven Miss who in turn went on to be a great producer. Barrio Babe, Subic City, Barrio Fiesta and Dee Bee are but a few quality racers produced. But it gets better. Barrio Fiesta is the mother of Surf Lorian, a racetrack flying machine from limited starts and an outstandingly successful stud dog since 2004. Mavis devoted countless hours of service as a committee member of the Beenleigh Greyhound Racing Club. The hampers put together by Mavis and her ‘canteen ladies’ for Queensland Cup day each June meant more to many winners than the prizemoney.

Bogie Leigh The term ‘household name’ doesn’t get applied very often to greyhounds but it’s certainly fitting for Bogie Leigh. During a wonderful race career which ran from January 13, 2003 until December 16, 2004, Bogie Leigh became known throughout Australia as the ‘sprint queen’ of her era. Bred by Peter Bryers in Toowoomba and owned by Les and Sandi Bein of Gatton, Bogie Leigh won prizemoney of $488,335, trained throughout her career by Tony Brett. She is Australia’s fifth highest prizemoney earner. She currently sits proudly as the only female in the top eight names on that prizemoney list. Bogie Leigh’s career on the racetrack started and ended the same way. Her debut run saw her finish second in an Albion Park 520 metres maiden. Her racetrack swansong nearly two years later was her second to Malfoy (Dashing Corsair’s sire) in the 2004 Group 1 Brisbane Cup at Albion Park. But in between those second placings at Albion Park was a list of feature race wins which is quite something to behold. Her Group racing success was the 2004 Group 1 Golden Easter Egg, 2004 Group 1 Australian Cup, 2003 Group 1 Brisbane Cup, 2003 Group 1 Sandown Sapphire Crown, 2003 Group 2 Queensland Futurity and 2003 Group 3 Lismore Cup in the track record time of 29.48. She was very much an Albion Park star, winning 29 races there, with five seconds and two thirds from 38 starts. Her best time was 29.83. The track record then was 29.73 to the credit of Flying Amy. Bogie Leigh is a daughter of Just the Best and Hypo Havoc. Her career record was 68 starts for 41 wins, 12 seconds and five thirds. Bogie Leigh was twice a finalist in the Queensland Greyhound of the Year. She was a finalist in 2003, the winner that year being Elite State. Bogie Leigh took the crown in 2004. Bogie Leigh’s pups to race include Bogie Gem with 15 wins, Bogie Ace with 14 wins including the 2008 Flying Amy Classic at Albion Park, Black Peregrine with 13 wins and Bogie Bomber with 11 wins. In 2006, Bogie Leigh was inducted into the Australian Greyhound Racing Hall of Fame.

MAKING HEADLINES was a regular occur-rence during the lengthy racing career of Dash-ing Corsair. The dog doesn’t need a label such as Queensland trained, versatile performer or whatever.

Greyhound followers Australia-wide went wild about “Harry”, and just the dog’s name says it all. Dashing Corsair retired last August, going out in a blaze of glory, winning the National Distance Championship Grand Final at Albion Park. ` Last Saturday night his name was again up in lights when crowned the 2011 Queen-sland Greyhound Of The Year. Dashing Corsair was something special from the early part of his career.

He won the National Sprint Championship Grand Final at Cannington in 2009, but his National Distance Championship win two years later created a first.

No greyhound had previously achieved that double. Dashing Corsair (Malfoy - Rose Fla-menco) was the 2010 Queensland Greyhound Of The Year.

He’s not the first to win that award twice... he is the third, in fact.

Inaugural Gabba star, Top Simbi was Queensland Greyhound Of The Year in 1973 and 1974, while the great Flying Amy won in 1994 and 1995. Dashing Corsair outpolled Bogie King and He Knows Uno to win the 2011 title.

The dog’s breeder and owner, Paddy Fitch never saw Dashing Corsair race “in the flesh”.

She turned 86 years of age last week and is not one to be venturing out at night time.

But she was enticed to attend the grey-hound awards night last Saturday and spoke glowingly of her greyhound and the care and attention of Dwyer and Desley Lennon as trainer and handler.

Inductees and awards TWENTY AWARDS were handed out last Saturday night. Some were known in advance,

such as Greyhound Of The Year for individual tracks. A new award called “Women in Racing” was introduced, and the winner was Cairns GRC stalwart, Emma Bryant, known to many as Emma O’Çonnor.

Whilst no race club is ever a “one person band” (previously one man band), you can put Bryant down as a significant achiever who, on occasions, has been largely responsible for keeping the far north Queensland club afloat. “I regard our greyhound club as one big family,” she told the packed audience at the Sofitel Hotel on Saturday night. There were three inductees into the Rac-ing Queensland Hall of Fame… they were Ron Ball, the Bellamy family and Bogie Leigh. Ball’s deeds as a trainer need no elabora-tion.

The Bellamy family, with Frank and his wife, Mavis and later son, Peter, have been significant achievers since the days when Frank trained a star greyhound named Spotted Lightning in the early 1960s.

More recently, Mavis and Peter bred top sprinter and sire, Surf Lorian.

Bogie Leigh’s induction was, to be blunt, overdue.

Mind you, greyhounds in the Queensland Hall of Fame before her are Top Simbi, Flying Amy, New Tears and Pretty Fearless, so it can be said that Bogie Leigh has now joined illustri-ous company there.

Consider this Wine does not make you fat. It makes you lean (against walls, chairs, etc)

At Brisbane’s Sofitel Hotel on awards night, Paddy Fitch extols the virtues of Dashing Corsair and those who prepared the top racer to 57 career wins, Dwyer and Desley Lennon.
