What’s happening at The Gardens on Derby & Futurity night?

GREYHOUNDS WA conducted the box draw for the Perth Cup and Gal-axy at the Industry Awards Night conducted at Cannington Exhibition Centre on Sunday evening. The Andrea Dailly speed ma-chine, Heston Bale drew the coveted inside alley and was installed as $2.30 favourite for the ‘black type’ event.

Glen Gallon, prepared by Tony Brett, was the fastest qualifier and drew the blue vest, while Oaks Road for Mark Gatt drew box two. The start of the race is going to be an interesting affair, with the leading lights all needing a clean step or two before being able to demonstrate their blistering mustering speed.

Traditionally, Cannington sprint finals favour the chasers drawn on the

inside, and it is hard to see this run-ning of the $210,000 Group 1 Perth Cup being an exception to that. Glen Gallon has the times on the board at Cannington and is well drawn, with Mepunga Geordie to his inside and Lektra Jay on his outer.

His 5.70 opening section was the quickest in the heats, and if he finds the front and can repeat his 7.57 time through the bend, he will be very dif-ficult to close down. Heston Bale is the fastest dog in the race and is drawn to perform, with Oaks Road strongly in contention on his Cannington performances. PAUL STUART’S Miata was quickly installed as $1.40 favourite in the early market after drawing box four in the $120,000 Galaxy final.

A clean jump from Miata will see her heading of Zipping Lad by the home straight, however, if she is away slowly she could find herself behind Kalden Mayhem, a chaser that grows a leg when near the bunny.

Shimaguni struggled to overcome a resurgent Kalden Athena in a heat but will have derived benefit from two looks at the city circuit.

SPONSORED by Forsythes, the Na-tional Futurity final is a wide-open affair, however, I’m leaning towards Midnight Capers to give the Pringle family the $75,000 first prize and Group 1 success at Betchoice Gar-dens on Friday night. With the aid of the rails box, and having had plenty of big race experi-ence, Midnight Capers has the chance to win a feature, confirming the belief that a big race would one day be on his CV. Having just two starts at the track over the 515 metres trip, Midnight Capers was runner-up behind Zara Zulu in a semi last week.

But the box draw makes all the difference this Friday, with Midnight Capers going from box two to box one, whilst Zara Zulu heads from a perfect box eight into the middle box five. Richmond Vale mentor, Jason

Mackay has the rare opportunity of training the feature double on the night, as Witch’s Potion has a definite hope from box two.

This daughter of Meticulous clocked 29.73 in a Stewards Trial prior to this series, so will be right in the finish if able to gain any early luck. Another chance at big odds could be Desalle Bale, as the Wheeler camp have a high opinion of this daughter of Go Wild Teddy, and should be another chaser that will find improve-ment with track experience.

AT Group 1 level. The Newcastle Herald National Derby has the “Mac” look about it, with the Jason Mackay trained McElle looking to tick all the boxes and should win the NCA’s flagship event at Betchoice Gardens on Friday night. Drawing box three, which the son of Collision had in a semi-final victory last week, McElle has been brought along nicely by his trainer, with plenty of sprint work and race experience to give the 30kg chaser every chance of getting the 515 metres trip. With his brilliant early dash, McElle should lead again, and there are not many

rivals who could give him too big a start. The one exception is Pure Instinct,

who is drawn the seven for trainer, Mark Azzopardi, and only needs to obtain a forward position early in proceedings and then run on stoutly to be a threat. The race also sees regular city per-formers Sure As, Flavours and General Trigga with definite hopes, but luck in running will determine their fate. At value, Direct Bullet is well drawn in box one, and after chasing home McElle in a semi last week at big odds, could again fill a hole at good each way odds. - Ron Arnold

Although beaten a long way in a Futurity semi in a smart 29.61, Rose and Danielle Pringle’s Midnight Capers has been allocated the inside alley in Friday night’s final and should prove the testing material.

McElle, prepared by Jason Mackay for Reg Kay, won a semi-final of the National Derby last week, the blue dog ran 29.78 and will again sport the white vest in the Friday night’s final.

LOOKED UPON by many punters as being a special, Don Chendo only had to begin well from box three to annex the Sky Racing Mixed 4th/5th Grade last Sat-urday night.

Joy Davis’ honest racer was sent out at $1.80 and began like a bullet, finding the front before clocking 8.99 a lap out, with Mystery Pink and Miss Jarrah the nearest opponents.

Down the back with a wing on each paw, Don Chendo reached the next checkpoint in 22.03 holding a three lengths break over Mystery Pink, while Full Circle had got past Miss Jarrah and was on the charge.

Although both Mystery Pink and Fill Circle made some ground in the run to the judge, the Len Ketelaar trained son of Where’s Pedro and Kilby Supreme ran

the 600 metres trip in 34.59, making it two wins from three goes at the middle dis-tance journey.

Second, beaten two and a half lengths was Mystery Pink, while hird placed Full Circle was three quarters of a length further astern.

Career-wise, Don Chendo has graced the track on 55 occasions, notch-ing 20 wins and 11 placings, earning $144,865 in prizemoney.

THERE WERE TWO heats of a 725 metres Grade 5 series were conducted at The Meadows last weekend, and Befitting was well in commission to land the open-ing round.

Drawn the rails alley, Befitting came out fast then led them a merry chase, clocking 16.05 and 29.75 to have a four and a half lengths advantage over Black Physique coming off the back.

But the daughter of Made To Size and Misty Bear left nothing in tank, as she passed the post a neck clear in 43.02,

Trained by Jason Thompson for Lorna Collins, she defeated Mission Com-plete and third placed Crafty Lady.

The betting on the event was brisk, with Crafty Lady carrying the weight 9of punters’ money at $2.10 and Befitting ($2.50) came in for plenty of support.

At her first start on the track over the long trip, Befitting’s has the good stats of 15 wins and seven placings from 36 race-day appearances.

PUNTERS were right on the money again in the other heat of the 725 metres Grade 5 when Robert Andrew went to the start the $2.00 popular pick.

From the four trap, Robert Andrew accelerated to the front, then after clock-ing splits of 16.10 and 29.98, was over two lengths ahead of Groober and Har-bour Rose coming off the back.

For one so short in betting it wasn’t an easy win though, as over the conclud-ing stages he had to repel the fast finish of Thrilling Frank.

Still, punters and fans were happy enough, as the Geoff Slattery owned son of Hallucinate and Deloris held on to score by a length and a half in 43.10, while Groober rounded out the placings.

Trained at Lara by Rob Britton, Robert Andrew registered his 14th win with 13 placings from 46 outings, collect-ing $67,570 in stakes, and opened his account over the staying journey at the Broadmeadows layout.

Robert Andrew was the middle pin of a treble on the night for Rob Britton, as Jungle Hero worked home nicely to land the Happy Birthday Dale Grade 5.

Rated at $6.60 behind the $3.40 favourite, Dodge The Batten, Jungle Hero exited the eight gate sweetly but nearing the first bend was trapped a bit deep, with Ozz Magic showing the way over Dodge The Batten.

But after most runners copped a bump on the turn, Jungle Hero moved to second, with just Ozz Magic ahead, com-pleting the second phase in 18.05.

With more trouble occurring on the final corner, Jungle Hero sailed past his rivals and won going away.

A red brindle son of Surf Lorian and Miss Chilli, raced by Matthew and Caryl Morris, scored by over two lengths to Rapid Tide in 30.44, while Ozz Magic was a half head away third.

Jungle Hero racked-up his first win at The Meadows, whilst overall he’s scored three times with nine placings from 14 attempts.

Chilly Babe, raced in the same inter-ests as Jungle Hero, was the saving grace for bookies when she lobbed and was virtually friendless in betting.

In a good betting duel we saw both Lektra Express and Lacoste sent to the start as equal favourites at $2.60, with not much money for any other runner.

In the Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 525 metres best to begin was Arvo’s Vixen, who recorded a fast 5.03 early before running into bother on the first bend.

But similarly, those closest to the leader also found bother, leaving Lektra Express in front along the back in 17.86, with Lacoste doing the serious chasing.

On the top circle there wasn’t much separating five runners, but after straight-ening for the run-in both Lektra Express and Lacoste collided heavily.

Life was made much easier for Chilly Babe ($7.20), who’d been camped behind them on the rail.

She dashed through and took over before saluting the judge a half head clear of Lektra Express in 30.30, with Lacoste more than a length away third.

Chilly Babe has now won half of her six starts at the track and distance, whilst her CV reveals five wins and two placings from 13 starts.

Don Chendo mirrored this Sandown win with a sparkling performance at The Meadows last weekend, completing his 600 metres assignment in 34.59 for Joy Davis and Len Ketelaar.

CHILDREN can be persuasive, just ask Thagoona trainer, Noel Evans.

Noel had a break from grey-hound racing for 12 years, but a year ago his children convinced him to get back into the industry.

“They promised they would do all the work with the dogs,” said Noel. “You know how that turned out.”

Last Thursday night at Albion Park, Noel landed his first city winner for more than a decade when Heartland Girl came from behind to win a 520 metres Nov-ice.

Noel’s return to greyhound racing a year ago took an immedi-ate setback not long after he bought Heartland Girl. The daughter of Token Jet and Young Speedy was bought for $1,000 by Noel after she had raced six times without winning.

Noel immediately gave her a three months spell.

When he put her back into training she came on season and then has suffered shoulder prob-lems for some time since.

It was almost 12 months to the day when Noel produced the bitch at Ipswich in December last year, and at her second start for her new kennel she ran a brilliant 30.71 to win a Maiden there.

She continued that form with a powerful Novice victory last week.

She scored by two lengths over Birchgrove Lass, with three quar-ters of a length to third placed Got-cha Fired Up.

Heartland Girl powered home after being headed by Birchgrove Lass passing the catching pen.

She raced to the lead at the turn into the home straight and was coming away at the finish.

“She’ll get a strong 600 metres later on for sure,” said Noel.

Noel has two dogs in training now, and Heartland Girl was hav-ing her first start at Albion Park.

Heartland Girl traces to Nev Robson’s grand sprinting bitch, Go Series, winner of a Tweed Heads Galaxy.

Exciting litter FORMER Victorian dog man, John Edwards is never short of confidence when it comes to his team of greyhounds.

That’s because John and wife, Lillian have always had a better

than handy dog in their kennel. Edwards has a couple of handy

gallopers in the kennel at the mo-ment, littermates by Collision from John and Lil’s former star race bitch, Ellie’s Diamond.

But John is almost beside him-self with the potential of Ellie’;s Diamond’s next litter, by former Gold Coast Cup winner, Bucking-ham Chuck.

“The litter is 15 months old and has broken-in with great prom-ise,” he said.

That must be saying some-thing, considering the ability of the Collision litter.

Last Thursday night at Albion Park, Large Diamond (Collision – Ellie’s Diamond) stormed away from a 520 metres Fifth Grade field to win by a length and a quar-ter in 30.60, beating Smart Assign-ment, with a length and a quarter to In And Under third.

Edwards has his sights set on the upcoming Young Guns, Queensland Derby and Flying Amy Classic for Large Diamond.

“The dog is desperate for an inside box draw but he hasn’t had one for four months,” said John. “His brother, Diamond Sparkles is desperate for the eight box, but he hasn’t drawn there for about eight months.”

Large Diamond took his record to seven wins and 16 placings from 34 starts.

“I know both Large Diamond and his brother will run 600 me-tres, and then 710 metres on their ear,” said Edwards. “But they are still young enough to go in all those age races up here.”

Ellie’s Diamond also has a six months-old litter by Brett Lee.

Edwards loaned the bitch out for that mating.

In a race full of trouble, Large Diamond copped more than his share during running but quickly joined in on the home turn and barged his way through along the rail to win running away.

CONNECTIONS of Noble Pedro may feel somewhat disappointed that their star chaser has been left out of 2011 Greyhound Of Year calculations.

On the brighter side, they may easily have the first dog selected for 2012, as the win last Saturday night at Wentworth Park showed the recent city track record holder is racing as good as ever and is certainly handling a field much better than in the earlier part of his chasing career. Fresh from his recent Dapto middle distance track record two weeks ago, Noble Pedro took on Prince Diablo in the Schweppes Stake, and it was hailed as the best match race seen at headquar-ters in many a long year. Noble Pedro drew the red marble and jumped perfectly to lead them into the first corner.

On the other hand, Prince Diablo stepped only moderately and was pushed very wide when negotiating the first bend. Heading to the back Noble Pedro cleared out from Kelly’s Hero, with Prince Diablo off the track and trying to catch the tear-away pacesetter.

As they moved down the side Noble Pedro slipped into over-drive and exploded clear of Kelly’s Hero, who couldn’t lift. In the home straight Noble Pedro went powerfully to the judge and was a dominant seven and three quarter lengths winner over the fast finishing Callamac Kid, running the 520 metres trip in 29.69, while Prince Diablo was not disgraced when finishing third, a half length back. Owned by Tim Caines, the Mary Wright prepared Noble Pedro has now won 25 times from 45 career starts plus a further eight placings, while the son of Where’s

Pedro and Miss Beeslee has hit $100,000 in stakes earnings.

Callamac Kid (Where’s Hover x Prize Pack), trained by Andy Lord, has had 61 career starts for 16 wins and 21 placings, whilst Prince Diablo (Premier Fantasy x Best Of Diablo) has notched 20 wins and seven placings from 39 career starts for trainer, John Finn.

A VETERAN CHASER that is racing in career best form is the Marie Burton trained Nicholas’s Habit, who scored a powerful win in the 520 metres Macro Meats Stake, and in so doing, made it eight victories at the Glebe venue. When the lids rose Flying Airlie was best to jump from box six and led Real Lies into the first corner.

As is the norm, Nicholas’s Habit was slow out from box five and was in a pack leaving the straight. Flying Airlie led them to the back, with Arapina Star and Real Lies giving chase, and there was still no sign of Nicholas’s Habit.

Running down the side Flying Airlie was still the lamplighter, with Arapina Star bridging the gap and then tacking on very quickly was Nicholas’s Habit. Turning for home Arapina Star momentarily looked the win-ner when she ranged alongside Flying Airlie, but from the clouds came Nicholas’s Habit whizzing along the fence. Grabbing the lead in a the twinkling of an eye, Nicolas’s

Habit charged to the line and scored by three quarters of a length to Arapina Star in 30.20, while Flying Airlie held on for third, a further one and three quar-ter lengths away.

Good onya Dave ONE WINNER that made all the right moves was Crazy Dave, who scored his second win at the course by taking out the www.tab.com.au Stake over 520 metres. After Bossman Jack jumped well from box four and led them around the corner, the check vested Crazy Dave then worked into second spot leaving the straight.

Bossman Jack was well clear down the back, with Crazy Dave holding second, and at that stage was making no impression on the front runner. But things changed quickly as they came down the side, as Bossman Jack started to shorten stride and quickly Crazy Dave ranged alongside.

As heads were turned for home Crazy Dave raced clear and was untroubled in the run to the post, defeating Cyclone To Excel by one and a quarter lengths in 30.42, while Bossman Jack held down third place, a further one and three quarter lengths away. Crazy Dave, by Trewly Spe-cial out of Queen Cleopatra, trained by Troy Halligan, has had 63 career starts for 14 wins and 20 placings.

Cyclone To Excel (Brett Lee x Miss Stately) has acquired five wins and 12 placings from 38 ca-reer starts for trainer, Ron Bell, whilst Peter Lagogiane’s Bossman Jack (Bombastic Shiraz x Nova Keroma) to date has produced seven wins and seven placings from 23 career starts.

Noble Pedro handed in another fine victory at Wentworth Park last Saturday night when the avid chaser clocked 29.69 in the 520 metres Free For All for Tim Caines and Mary Wright.

Stepped up to distance racing recently, Mick Patterson’s He Knows Uno notched his first victory over 720 metres at Wentworth Park last Friday night, running away to win in a fast 42.17.

STAGGER sprung a surprise by taking out last Wednesday night’s final of the Group 2 Lion Quality Products Warragul Cup run over 460 metres.

There were six heats staged the Friday prior, and obviously the six winners qualified along with the two fastest seconds.

Stagger was a fastest second, having been beaten a head by Black Saharrah in 25.68, and from box two he was sixth pick on SuperTAB with punters at $11.40.

Favourite was fastest qualifier, Adulter-ous in the three at $3.50, with the red vested Dyna Steal second pick at $4.40.

Classy Maldini, the 400 metres record holder on the track was third pick from box six at $5.40, whilst the other two runners under double-figure odds were Black Sahar-rah from the pink at $7.70 and veteran, Rad-ley Bale out of box four at $9.00.

The remaining duo were Mepunga Geordie from the seven at $12.60 and Soda Boy out of box five at $13.60. Boxrise saw Black Saharrah explode from the traps to be nearly a length in front after a few strides, with the remaining seven in a line. After sorting themselves out, Black Saharrah had a handy break, but Classy Maldini hit top speed and raced through on the inside to hit the front, taking the first split in 6.46. Black Saharrah was second on the outside, whilst a line of three, Stagger in the middle and Mepunga Geordie the widest and Dyna Steal on the paint were battling it out

for third. Classy Maldini had the speed on and raced around to the second checkpoint in 11.11 with a three lengths lead over Black Saharrah, while Stagger was now a clear third and on a charge; just a length back.

As they rounded the final bend it was Classy Maldini in charge but he went wide whilst Black Saharrah stayed closer to the fence, but she now had Stagger on her out-side levelling-up, and Dyna Steal was mak-ing a move but he too went wide.

Classy Maldini had his sights set on atoning for his Devonport Cup second as he led them down the running, but coming to the 680 metre boxes Stagger was in full flight chasing, and they had the quinella between them.

Stagger was coming hard on the inside and claimed Classy Maldini within the shad-ows of the post to score by three quarters of a length, with Black Saharrah closing late to be just a half length back on the fence in third spot.

Next in was Dyna Steal ahead of Mepunga Geordie, Radley Bale, Soda Boy and Adulterous was a fair way off in last place.

Stagger carved out the new PB and BON time of 25.59 to make it five wins in nine goes at the trip when taking his career tally to 15 wins with 15 placings in 38 starts.

The son of Primo Uno and Instructed First took his stakemoney to $68,865 for owner trainer, Garry “Gus” Selkrig.

We caught up with Gus, who told us, “It

was a great win by the dog; it really means a lot to me and the family.”

“I started in dogs when I was at school and I used to walk John Edwards’ dogs for him.”

“They used to get worried, as I’d be gone for ages and they had to come looking for me.”

“I really loved the game and the dogs and the people; it was a great time.”

“About five years ago I decided to get really serious about training.”

“I had a new wife who loved the grey-hounds and was very supportive, and with the money that was in the game, I thought I could make a go of it if I was fair dinkum.”

“You can always go out and drive a truck if you need to, but I was a great be-liever in Bart Cummings, the horse trainer.”

“I read his books and listened to what he had to say, and basically that’s if you do the right things by your animals, they’ll do the right things by you.”

“And it’s true too, I can tell you that.” We asked Gus what was in store for

Stagger. “I think he’s got a lot more wins in him. I

don’t over-race my dogs. Some might have him in again next week but I’ll give him just a little break.”

“I have his brothers, Mario Chief and Stomp Stomp, and they’ve been going really well for me too, so I’m very happy with things the way they are going.” - Darryl Embling

LORENZO registered his third win in a row at Angle Park by taking out the John Gray Memorial Grade 5 final last Thursday night. A 30.19 heat winner a week ear-lier, the Ossie Chegia trained chaser was well in the betting, starting at $4.40 behind race favourite, Terry Tibbs ($2.80). Nicely drawn in three, Lorenzo jumped fast and showed superior pace to hold the early lead over King Ashy, despite running wide through the first turn. Coming back to the fence and leading by a couple of lengths over King Ashy in the back straight, Lorenzo looked determined to hold onto his advantage as he reached the top turn still holding a two lengths break. Rounding the final bend under

pressure from King Ashy, the race changed complexion when Terry Tibbs ran King Ashy off the track, leaving Lorenzo well clear. Straightening for home four lengths clear of King Ashy regaining his composure, Lorenzo made the most of his good fortune. The son of Where’s Pedro and Winsome Bluebird cruised across the line four and a half lengths clear of King Ashy in 30.29, with Just Chases running another good race to snare third place. And whilst Lorenzo may have had some good fortune late in the race, he made his own luck in the early going by jumping fast and showing superior speed in the charge to the first turn. A winner of four races from seven starts at Angle Park, Lorenzo took his career record to nine wins and 14 placings from 30 starts.

BUCKARINGA LAD upstaged his rivals at Angle Park last Thursday night when he won the Lion Hearted GOTY 2003 Grade 4 for trainer, Narvette Treloar. Poorly drawn in six and starting at good odds of $8.00 behind popular elect, Joken Kihael ($2.00), Buckar-inga Lad jumped nicely and showed good pace to hold a narrow lead over Piruz Bale through the first turn. Skipping clear to lead by three lengths down the back straight,

Buckaringa Lad was travelling like a winner, reaching the top turn with a five lengths break over Piruz Bale. Rounding the final bend with the race firmly in his keeping, Buckar-inga Lad coasted home.

The son of Brumby Lad and Ka-nowna Belle scored by almost four lengths to Piruz Bale in 30.22, with Joken Kihael third. It was the third win in a row for Buckaringa Lad, and his tenth success on the track from 35 starts. Beaten favourite, Joken Kihael ran like a different dog after his previ-ous Group 3 SA Sprint Championship 29.83 win a week earlier, but a long delay behind the boxes may have played a role.

A cut above them TALENTED CHASER, Victa Troy was back to his best at Angle Park last Thursday night when he landed the Scull Murphy GOTY 2007 Mixed 3rd/4th Grade for trainer, Ron Schadow. Coming off an unplaced run in the Group 3 SA Sprint Champion-ship, having been caught in traffic early, Victa Troy was respected in betting and was sent to the 515 metres start as a $6.00 chance behind race favourite, Ruarc Entity ($2.80). Donning the pink vest, Victa Troy speared out and showed sizzling pace to cross the field and hold the early lead over Tripping Cowboy through the first turn. Careering away to lead by five lengths over Lektra Train in the back straight, Victa Troy was setting a hot pace up front and extended his lead to seven lengths at the top turn. Rounding the final bend still six lengths clear of Lektra Train sticking

to his task, Victa Troy went to the line under no pressure. And whilst Fat Wreck flashed home, the son of Where’s Pedro and Teelah greeted the judge four and a half lengths ahead of Fat Wreck in Best Of Night 30.14, while Lektra Train finished a close third. SA GOTY GREYHOUND RACING SA has announced the short list of five chas-ers in the running for the 2011 SA Greyhound Of The Year award. The five greyhounds vying for the top honour are Crazy Heart for Bruce Lellmann, Dark Duo for Rob Harnas, Goosebumps for Matthew Payne, Kalden Mayhem for Troy Murray and Satanic Cash for Bob Isaacson.

CRAZY HEART had 39 starts during 2011 for 16 wins and 14 plac-ings and was a Group 1 Adelaide Cup finalist in October. She had best times of 29.99 over the 515 metres and 35.24 over the 600 metres at Angle Park, 30.78 for the 531 metres at Gawler and 29.71 for the Barmera 512 metres trip.

DARK DUO dominated the SA scene for the first half of 2011 before succumbing to serious injury in Au-gust. He had 28 starts for 16 wins and 2 placings, with his highlight being a Group 3 victory in the Anniversary Cup at Angle Park. He had a best time of 29.67 over the 515 metres at Angle Park and was also a finalist in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup in January.

GOOSEBUMPS had 38 starts for 20 wins and 11 placings and devel-oped into one of the state’s strongest chasers. She had best times of 29.60 over

the 515 metres, 35.19 for the 600 me-tres, and 44.25 over the 731 metres at Angle Park, along with brilliant runs of 30.53 for the 531 metres and 37.28 for the 643 metres at Gawler.

KALDEN MAYHEM was a force to be reckoned with during 2011, with his 41 starts resulting in 19 wins and 10 placings, and his biggest win being the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup final. He had scorching best times of 29.36 for the 515 metres, 34.48 over the 600 metres, and 43.22 for the 731 metres at Angle Park.

He ran 30.32 for the 531 metres, and 37.27 over the 643 metres at Gawler, and a record run of 30.88 over the 536 metres at Strathalbyn.

SATANIC CASH, the 2010 SA GOTY, has made the list again with 14 starts for 7 wins and 5 placings in an injury-plagued year before being retired in August. He won the Group 3 Distance Championship at Angle Park in Janu-ary and had best times of 42.96 over the 731 metres and 35.14 over the 600 metres at Angle Park.

HOBART’S Maiden Thousand over 461 metres has unveiled many top grade performers over the years, and the latest to have his name etched on the winner’s list, Zavance Man could be Tas-mania’s next star act.

In front of a big crowd at Tat-tersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night, Zavance Man emulated the feats of superstar, Damek of two years ago by win-ning a Maiden Thousand qualify-ing heat and semi-final before taking out the $10,400 final.

The win put $7000 in the bank of his owner, Debbie Can-nan.

But it also gave trainer, Ted Medhurst his first Maiden Thou-sand winner, which was the only feature race on the Tasmanian calendar to have eluded him in over 25 years of training.

Medhurst prepared 100 win-ners last season, but this latest win probably meant more to him than any of last season’s tri-umphs.

The Brighton mentor shies away from the media these days, but his strike rate and dominance in feature races is so good that he automatically becomes a target for interviews and subsequent added exposure for the code.

Zavance Man will no doubt continue to make his presence felt in whatever he contests in the coming months.

It was an incident-packed final, with Night Train showing the way early from box five, while Zavance Man avoided trou-ble by staying wide from box seven.

The race looked like develop-ing into a thriller when the slow coaches started to close in on the leaders rounding the top turn.

But when Shanlyn Hirdy slipped into overdrive, he ran into the back of the pack that resulted in a chain-reaction through the field.

This allowed Zavance Man to collar the leader, Night Train, while the well-fancied Emerald

Lee was dragged down from be-hind and impressive semi winner, Times Of Grace fell heavily when making ground.

When Zavance Man assumed control he bounded clear and went on to defeat Wynburn Voo-doo by almost five lengths in 26.39, with Emerald Lee a length astern.

Zavance Man (Head Bound - Its A She) is prepared by Med-hurst for fellow trainer, Debbie Cannan, who had a great working relationship with Medhurst when she first became involved in grey-hound racing about eight years ago.

Cannan trains Emerald Lee, who was impressive when win-ning a semi-final in 26.36, or .03 off Zavance Man’s time in win-ning a semi.

Emerald Lee was closing in along the rail when she was dragged down, but did a good job to recover and run on to grab third.

The Scott Bryan trained Wyn-burn Voodoo was a gallant sec-ond and will win her chare of races.

Wynburn Voodoo began well from box two and trailed the lead-ers into the top turn before run-ning on strongly along the rail to hold down second.

The winner’s purse of $7000 would have been enough to make any owner happy, but as Cannan and Medhurst also are members of the Hobart Greyhound Racing Club, they each received a $2000 bonus, making it a more than handy windfall.

More ground JETHRO gave an indication that he may have a future as a stayer after scoring an impressive win over 599 metres at Tattersall’s Park, Hobart last Thursday night.

The lightly raced litter brother of Hobart Maiden Thousand win-ner, Zavance Man began well from box eight and crossed to the rail son after leaving the first turn, but not as quick as Wynburn Whirl, who pinged the lids from box one and set up a four lengths break over the favourite heading to the top turn.

But when Jethro ($1.60) moved alongside the leader at the top of the straight he forged to the lead and looked set to win by many panels of fencing.

However, Wynburn Whirl showed courage to stick on, only going under by a length, with Din’s Chappi a distant third.

Jethro showed promise from the outset, winning a heat of the Devonport club’s Breeders Clas-sic, only to get pole-axed in the final, finishing seventh behind New Recruit.

He had his first try at the middle distance in Launceston in mid-November and finished a creditable third to Azz Always when sent around the $1.20 fa-vourite.

Jethro’s trainer, Butch Deverell is confident the dog will develop into a handy all-rounder, but if he starts to excel at middle distances there’s no doubt he will step up to the longer journeys and can hopefully be a contender for the National Distance Champion-ship, to be hosted by the Hobart club in August this year.

Tassie

Peter Staples

Ted Medhurst snared the Hobart Maiden Thousand final with Zavance Man and annexed the only feature event he’d never won.

Jethro wins a 599 metres Juvenile/Maiden in Hobart, proving that the step-up from sprinting had an immediate effect. Prepared by a cluey bloke, Butch Deverell, the white and black dog recorded 34.66.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 – Page 11NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

FOR A LONG TIM, I’ve wondered about the expression “pork-barrelling”. I know what it is, it’s just that I don’t know why those words are used to describe politicians offering fund-ing, usually close to an election, to candidates in marginal seats to help them across the line. Greyhound racing followers en-countered an almost bizarre 72 hours in Queensland from Monday to Wednesday last week.

It started with Racing Queensland Chairman, Bob Bentley calling a meeting of greyhound racing partici-pants to seek their views on where a new greyhound track should be lo-cated in south-east Queensland. Deagon on Brisbane’s northside had been the preferred site of RQ for a combined harness and greyhound complex.

But protracted court action by harness racing interests has stalled

any work at Deagon. Within a day of the greyhound participants telling Bentley that Logan was their almost unanimous choice, Queensland’s Racing Minis-ter, Tim Mulherin announced that the state government is fully supportive of building a greyhound track at Cro-nulla Park, Logan.

This is the same site on which the now defunct Greyhound Racing Au-thority wanted to build a track with the $10 million compensation offered by the state government for the loss of the Parklands Gold Coast grey-hound track.

That venue was closed in 2008 to make way for a new Gold Coast hos-pital. The GRA did some preliminary work, then when RQ became the con-trol body, it canned Logan in favour of Deagon.

Now we are back where we started nearly four years ago. I was at the announcement by Mr. Mulherin that, subject to a revised Infrastucture Plan and a business plan for Logan, the government would fund the building of a greyhound complex there. Someone at that gathering (about 50 people were present) came out with the words… “pork barrelling”. Strictly speaking, Mulherin’s an-

nouncement is not pork-barrelling, as he is the member for the Mackay electorate in north Queensland.

He has been the member since 1995, and it’s a safe Labor Party seat. So too is the electorate of Wood-ridge, where Cronulla Park is located.

Mr. Mulherin’s announcement was made in the office of Woodridge member, Desley Scott, who has been the sitting member there since 2001, and Woodridge is one of the safest Labor seats in this state. Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh announced the next day that a state election will be held on March 24.

An election announcement was imminent anyway; it was the timing that got the sceptics dishing out accu-sations. Mr. Mulherin hasn’t had a lot to do with greyhound racing participants and looked quite taken aback at the pork-barrel, and “why have you taken so long to act” criticism levelled at him. I was amazed at the negativity to his announcement.

For as long as I can remember, greyhound racing has longed for its own complex. The sport was a tenant at the Gabba from 1972 to 1993, and for almost the past 20 years grey-hounds have shared Albion Park with the harness code… and it’s been a financial battle all the way.

Cronulla Park is the chance for a stand-alone greyhound complex. It has the potential to operate as suc-cessfully as The Meadows in Mel-bourne.

The locations are similar, actu-ally, as both are around 20 kilometres

from the CBD and in a genuine work-ing class area.

Whilst the Gold Coast Parklands was a wonderful track, there was little public support for the venue.

Greyhound racing just didn’t ap-peal to the average Gold Coast mil-lionaire or retiree.

Build something similar to Park-lands at Logan and I reckon it will work for sure. Desley Scott says the residents of her Woodridge electorate constantly request that more entertainment ven-ues be built there.

A greyhound track will be just that, as well as a wonderful facility for owners, trainers and their grey-hounds, with two tracks.

Plans are for a ’one-turn’ track around an Albion Park shaped circuit.

The best of both worlds, if you like. So here is a government pledging something like $20 million for a new greyhound track.

It’s a government highly likely to be defeated at the March 24 election.

But you know what… I don’t care if it’s trying to grab some last minute votes. I don’t care if it’s pork-barrelling.

All I care about is that this code gets a facility which is so long over-due it’s beyond a joke. I reckon everyone should have been shaking Tim Mulherin’s hand and slapping him on the back last Tuesday, rather than some choosing to give him a gob-full of abuse.

Flood-prone zone CAPALABA has again been flooded.

It will cost big bucks to repair the

place yet again. I wonder how long RQ can keep

throwing money there. Whenever the suggestion is made that Capalaba might have to shut down, the cries are deafening to keep the place open.

Yes, it’s great to have a straight track on which to race, but the venue rarely attracts full fields.

Many people who bellow to keep Capalaba going don’t ever race there. It could be possible to incorporate a straight track at Cronulla Park.

The dimensions of the land don’t allow for a 366 metres distance, but something could be installed suitable for Saturday afternoon racing in a flood-free zone.

And Cronulla Park isn’t far from Capalaba anyway. This is not my bright idea.

Former Capalaba Secretary-Manager, Bernie Culey made the sug-gestion back in 2008 to relocate Ca-palaba when Cronulla Park first emerged as a potential greyhound racing site. It seems that Ipswich will stay at the local Showgrounds, and that makes sense.

The club operates profitably and works amicably with its landlord, the Ipswich Show Society. If Logan becomes a goer, it will be a very sensible workable arrange-ment to have south-east Queensland’s TAB racing there, and at Ipswich.

Consider this Why is it that people who are late are always jollier than those who have to wait for them?

STRONG INTENTION atoned for his last start second in the Cran-bourne Cup by leading throughout to take out the Maidment Memorial over 595 metres.

Coming from box one as favour-ite at $1.90, the Jamie Ennis trained galloper won the jump and simply exploded away from his rivals to be six lengths ahead at the first marker in 9.10, with Dyna Kate second and

Hella Good on the fence third. Strong Intention was on a mis-

sion out in front as he led by eight lengths at the back turn in 23.32, with Dyna Kate second and Hella Good still third.

Although getting a little tired, Strong Intention managed to hold out the very fast finishing Granduer ($4.70) and scored by a neck, with Bling It On ($6.40) six and a half lengths back in third spot.

Strong Intention, a son of Brett Lee and So Busy, owned by Todd O’Neill, clocked 34.58 and made it two from three at the trip, as part of his 19 wins in 62 starts overall.

Jamie Ennis scored earlier in the night with Johnny Ringo for owners Terry Wales and Christine Knox in the Free Entry Every Thursday Grade 5 over 515 metres. Oh Carol CAROL ALLEN posted Best Of Night 29.72 to take out the NCA of Victoria website Free For All over 515 metres.

Sent to box one at $5.80, the daughter of Where’s Pedro and

Daphne Bale won the start but was headed by Allen Elroy down to the first mark in 5.06, with Come On Rodge on the outside a close third.

Come On Rodge put the speed on and took over into the back and led to the second peg in 18.97, but Carol Allen was doing the chasing, two lengths down, with Allen Elroy going back to third.

Carol Allen put it into top gear around the final bend and came through on the fence to do best and defeat Come On Rodge ($11.70) by a length and three quarters, with Aston Elle ($10.00) picking up third money, a length and a half back.

Carol Allen has won 14 of her 59 starts, whilst on the track she’s scored in five of her 26 attempts.

The black and white chaser, owned by Jan Wheeler, was the sec-ond leg of a winning double for trainer, Graeme Bate.

Hackel Bale was Graeme’s first leg and also the first leg of a winning double for Paul Wheeler when he took out the $2 Australia Day Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Dailly trifecta ANDREA DAILLY rugged-up three runners in the Queen Selene – Cours-ing GOTY Grade 5 over 595 metres and led home the trifecta on the event.

Punters thought the three Dailly runners were the best chances in the race, sending Dyna Morris to box one as favourite at $2.50 ahead of Defrim Bale in box two at $3.00 and Bala Bale out of box three at $4.40.

After Bala Bale won the start and led early, Defrim Bale took over and led her to the first mark in 9.16, with Dyna Morris sitting third.

Defrim Bale was the pilot at the far corner, passing through in 23.19

with Dyna Morris railing past Bala Bale to be second, but four lengths down.

Despite his lead being reduced, Defrim Bale stuck to his task, hold-ing on to score by a half length over Dyna Morris, with Bala Bale five and three quarter lengths further astern.

Defrim Bale, a son of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale, was the sec-ond leg of a winning double for owner, Paul Wheeler.

The black galloper 34.29 BON to score at his first start at the trip, mak-ing it five wins in 11 outings to date.

Andrea won earlier in the night with the Sue Lenehan owned Lektra Johnson in the Catch On To Coursing Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 515 metres.

Andrea combined with Sue Lene-han again to land the Sandown Grey-hounds website Grade 5 over 515 metres with Lektra Ottens.

Blue vest for a blue dog: The flashy Bully Boy was untroubled in scoring an all the way win over the 515 metres trip in 29.85, punching out splits of 5.11 and 18.98 when notching his second win at the track. Raced by Jay White, trained by Dave Knocker and handled by Jan Cottrell, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Holy Thunder has now won six of his 15 starts.

Jamie Ennis hasn’t had much luck lately in the rich Group races, but produced Strong Intention at Sandown Park to lead all the way when claiming the $10,000 to the winner Roy Maidment Memorial in 34.58. Raced by the O’Neill family, Strong Intention ran a game second when a $3.50 favourite in the recent Cranbourne Cup behind Mystic Apple, and came out running last week, opening an eight lengths break down the back straight before fending-off a barnstorming Granduer to pinch the former Group listed distance event.

AT BULLI last Monday night the Centrebet Cyril Rowe Gold Plate was the South Coast club’s first major event of the year.

Making a one-act affair of the Group 3 race was Prince Diablo, who claimed his second feature in only a few weeks and added another $25,000 to his savings account. Prince Diablo had snared the Gosford Gold Cup at the beginning of the month, so his earnings are now sitting at the $145,000 level, whilst the victory saw the son of Premier Fantasy unbeaten at his past five ap-pearances. When the lids opened for the 472 metres trip, first to show out was Loathsome from box five over Fancy Dean and Flavours, while Prince Diablo was only moderately away on the extreme outside. Once the acceleration button was hit Prince Diablo got into stride quickly and moved up in a flash to easily cross his inside rivals by the first corner.

The striking white and black dog went further away down the side, while there was trouble behind him, which allowed the red vested El Ca-ballo to roll into second spot. Turning for home Prince Diablo was all on his lonesome, and he looked most impressive again, easily accounting for El Caballo by six lengths in a very slick 26.02, with Loathsome claiming third prize, a further one and three quarter lengths back. Prince Diablo, a March 2009 son of Best Of Diablo, is trained by John and Minnie Finn, whilst his CV shows 20 wins and six placings from 38 starts.

El Caballo (El Galo x Eluthra), trained by Doreen Drynan, from 26 career starts has registered six wins and 12 placings, whilst Loathsome

(Bombastic Shiraz x Emmalana) after 28 career starts has notched 14 wins and four placings for trainer, Jason Magri.

The most dinky-di punter would have torn up his tickets with 100 me-tres to go, as the Ray Webster trained Lagoon Crockett looked ‘gone’, and so had the hopes of those who sup-ported the $2.20 pop.

However, the son of Meticulous blew ’em away and grabbed a narrow victory in the Centrebet.Com Stake over 472 metres. From the rails draw Lagoon Crockett was one of the last to leave the traps, with Wild Midnight in the yellow vest best to begin along with Digger Earl and Double The Love, who were both drawn out wide. The leaders headed held their course into the first corner, enabling Lagoon Crockett to push up on the fence and sit midfield, with Wild Midnight getting away in front.

Off the top bend Lagoon Crockett tried to cut to the outside but was inconvienced by another runner, and rounding the home bend was spotting Wild Midnight at least an eight lengths start. Half-way down the running the

leader was still travelling well, with Durbidge next and then Lagoon Crockett starting to weave a passage between runners, but still looked to have a daunting task as they neared the line. But sprouting wings, Lagoon Crockett simply charged at Wild Midnight and grabbed the lead, win-ning by a half head in 26.77, while Durbidge was a further three quarters of a length away third. Lagoon Crockett (x Angel Doll) was bred by the Websters, and from just four starts to date has achieved two wins and one placing.

For trainer, Bruce Willard, Wild Midnight (Where’s Pedro x Midnight Flare) has had nine starts for two wins and six placings, whilst Dur-bidge (Slater x Kimmy’s Magic), trained by Mark Wilcox, has pro-duced a win and two placings from five starts.

Making news TRAINED BY Steve White, Appar-ently So will head back to her state of origin, Tasmania to contest next week’s Group 2 Launceston Cup.

********** Bulli’s on-course bookie got some relief when the rising four year-old, Bond Reward got up at $37 at his 85th career start.

The son of Bond is trained by Vince Spiteri, and it was his 19th ca-reer win.

********** IN THE Greyhound Of The Year for 2011, the three finalist are He Knows Uno, Oaks Road and Zipping Lad, with the winner to be announced at a March 2 function at the Sydney Hil-ton, with tickets available via GRNSW on (02) 8767 0500 or The Dogs website: http://www.thedogs.com.au/DPage.aspx?spid=49&id=109

ONE day after Ability To Speed had come crashing to the sand in a recent Ipswich Young Guns, trainer, Col Byers was satisfied the dog had come to no harm.

While punters were prepared to take a risk with the dog at Albion Park last Thursday night in a 520 me-tres Mixed 4th/5th Grade, Col was brimming with confidence.

“I knew after one day he had taken no harm from that fall,” said Col.

Ability To Speed (Paddy’s Flame – Montana Belle) led through-out to win in 30.59, scoring by three quarters of a length over Champagne Shell, with a length to Mini Pod third.

It was his 16th win in 31 starts.

“The fall at Ipswich half knocked him out,” said Col. “I was really wor-ried about him. He was a bit quiet the next day but I checked him over and found nothing wrong.

“I got a second opinion from Noel Foster, and he found nothing wrong with him either.”

Col galloped his dog up the straight at home and knew then the

dog was ready to go back to the races. “I believe that straight run after a

fall will knock a lot of the soreness out of them,” said Col. “It worked with him.”

“Two days after the fall he was his old self.”

Ability To Speed will now head on to the Young Guns series at Al-bion Park in two weeks.

His litter brother, Spring News will come back to Albion Park next week for a graded race.

Col says Ability To Speed’s chas-ing ability is unique. “That’s why I was not concerned about the fall at Ipswich,” he said. “It’s a pity he is not stronger at the finish.”

Ability To Speed didn’t let his mentor, Col Byers down, leading all the way in a 520 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade in 30.58 at Albion Park on Australia Day.

LAST FRIDAY NIGHT the chasing action continued at Betchoice Gar-dens with the running of the Na-tional Derby and National Futurity semi finals.

The NCA’s flagship event has undergone a most successful new format, with only two run-offs into the Group 1 final.

From the male division it was the Jason Mackay trained McElle that blitzed his rivals to be the fastest qualifier.

He also appears the likely final favourite, giving owner, Reg Kay another Derby runner at the Newcas-tle venue. Exiting box three, McElle was quickly into stride and held out the wider drawn pair of General Trigga and Complicit.

The recent Silver Chief winner, Godsend was only moderately away and was caught in traffic as they reached the first turn. Heading to the back McElle stepped into overdrive and raced away, with both Complicit and Di-rect Bullet doing their best to stay in touch.

The leader was flying down the side and his opponents were well off the bit by the time they reached the home corner. Down the running it was McElle that kept going nicely to the line and defeated Direct Bullet by five lengths, recording 29.78 for the 515 metrs trip, with Complicit a neck away third. McElle, an October 2009 whelp of Collision and Elle McState, has a very impressive record of 20 starts for 13 wins and six placings.

Direct Bullet (Velocette x Direct Lass), trained by Mark Arncliffe, has

had 14 starts for two wins and eight placings, whilst the Chris Carl trained Complicit (Surf Lorian x Trendy Habit) from 29 career starts has produced 10 wins and nine plac-ings.

IN the other semi we saw all the outside drawn runners fill the plac-ings, as they began well and applied plenty of pressure to the more-favoured rivals. Boxrise saw the pink vested Sure As step best along with Free Will in green and Pure Instinct from the seven gate, with all three dogs charging across the face of the field.

But it was Free Will that had sufficient pace to lead them out of the straight over Sure As, who sat alongside, with Pure Instinct nice and handy too. This order stayed the same down the back and then to the point of the home turn.

Free Will just led narrowly into the straight but Sure As threw down the gauntlet, and after a brief tussle, went home too well and gained a neck verdict over the fast finishing Pure Instinct in 29.93, while Free Will held on for third, a half length away. In winning his third race at the course, the Syd Swain prepared Sure As, by Bombastic Shiraz out of Win-some Bluebird, has had 28 career starts for 12 wins and six placings. Prepared by Mark Azzopardi, Pure Instinct (Bombastic Shiraz x Weetbix) after 30 career starts has gathered 10 wins and 12 placings, whilst the Anthony Azzopardi trained Free Will (Elite State x For-mulate) to date has had 20 starts yielding five wins and four placings.

FORSYTHES National Futurity semi-finals over 515 metres pro-duced the fastest winner of all when Zara Zulu handled the track to a ni-cety and clocked 29.61 at just her second look at the Newcastle venue. When the lids rose it was Zara Zulu from box eight that was well into stride and matched the early pace of Go Jessie’s Girl in the red vest.

Leaving the straight Zara Zulu crossed to the front and led Go Jessie’s Girl and Midnight Capers to the back over. With fast chasers behind, it was obvious that Zara Zulu was sizzling along, and the gap only widened as they left the top corner. Turning for home it was all Zara Zulu, and the daughter of Mogambo raced to the line a six and a quarter lengths winner over Midnight Ca-pers, with Go Jessie’s Girl a further two and a half lengths away third. Zara Zulu (x Zulu Zepha) con-tinues the good success for owner Geoff Collins, and with trainer, Ros Hume, has had 11 career starts for six wins and three placings.

Midnight Capers (Collision x Midnight Movie), trained by Rose Pringle, has had 19 career starts for seven wins and 10 placings, whilst Norm Becroft’s Go Jessie’s Girl (Collision x Go Mighty Mouse) from 34 raceday appearances has notched 13 wins and 15 placings.

Former star sprinter, El Galo is starting to fire out some winners as a sire, and ticked-up another success

when Olive Millie was too good for her rivals in the other semi. After exiting box one sweetly, Olive Millie matched motors with By Starlight and Here’s Hayley heading into the first corner.

The pre-race series favourite, Stetson Donna missed the jump and was in plenty of traffic by the first corner, and after being checked was relegated to the rear, subsequently never raising the hopes of her sup-porters. Getting away in front was By Starlight, but Olive Millie was on her hammer, with Witch’s Potion making ground from midfield. The leaders started to bunch coming to the home corner, where By Starlight was being pressured by Olive Millie and then the fast finish-ing Witch’s Potion. Drawing to the front in the shad-ows of the post, Olive Millie held out Witch’s Potion to score by three quarters of a length in 29.81, with a similar margin to third placed By Starlight. Olive Millie (x Gogo Sutro), trained by Ken Lewis, from nine starts to date has four wins and three placings.

Witch’s Potion (Meticulous x Magical Potion), trained by Jason Mackay, has had 17 starts for six wins and eight placings, whilst the Michael Fearnley trained By Star-light (Mogambo x Zulu Zepha), with her 18 career starts showing five wins and eight placings.

Page 14 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Looks good I JUST had a look through the list of invitations for the three Group races that are run over The Meadows three distances in February.

The Temlee at Group 1 level over 525 metres, as well as The Rookie Rebel over 600 metres and The Zoom Top over 725 metres, both Group 2 events.

Well, I guess there are no sur-prises, as the dogs most thought would be invited to nominate are there.

Several had received invitations to two races, as has been the case before.

I noticed that He Knows Uno was invited to both The Rookie Rebel and the Zoom Top, and I guess it was within the realms of possibility that he could have also been invited to The Temlee.

Dyna Morris has been invited to both The Temlee and The Rookie Rebel, whilst his litter brother, Dyna Tron has been invited to The Temlee and his litter sister, Dyna Kate has been invited to The Rookie Rebel.

Recent Sale and Cranbourne Cups winner, Mystic Apple has also been invited to both The Temlee and The Rookie Rebel.

Three of the four from The Shootout have been invited to The Temlee… Allen Harper, Cape Hawke and Radley Bale… whilst The Shoot-out winner, Bekim Bale’s litter brother, Heston Bale has been invited also.

The TOPGUN field of 2011 sees seven from there invited for The Meadows’ other Group 1 ‘By Invita-tion Only’ race and they are Allen Harper (1st), Radley Bale (2nd), Bogie King (3rd), Oaks Road (4th), Allen Hertz (6th), Kilty Lad (7th) and Prince Diablo (8th), with only He Knows Uno missing.

And as you saw above, he was invited to the other two.

From last year’s The Temlee, only Kilty Lad and Up And Away are back, whilst He Knows Uno also went around in last year’s race.

From last year’s The Rookie Re-bel, only The Meadows GOTY, Stack ’Em Flat has been invited back.

Bobby Boucheau and Slick Lee ran in last year’s The Zoom Top and they’ve been invited back for this year’s race.

For the record, the winners last year were High Earner (Temlee), Symmetry (Rookie Rebel) and Blue Lorian (Zoom Top).

In The Alps THERE’S a chaser going around at the moment called Alpe D’Huez.

I guess people who have followed the Tour De France bike race will be aware of the name, as it’s a Ski Re-sort in the French Alps in the district of Huez, thus the name Alpe d’Huez.

Alpe D’Huez (the greyhound) has already risen to some lofty heights and he just put his name into the re-cord books by running 39.02 to score over 680 metres at Warragul.

In doing so, he removed Crafty Lady as being a dual record holder on the twin tracks of Warragul and Gee-long.

He fronted-up at Warragul a week later and joined the list of dogs to break their own track record by running 38.99 to score.

Alpe D’Huez, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and Joop Muse, to date has raced just eight times for six wins.

Incidentally, his dam is a litter sister of Mogambo and a full older sister of Lady Arko.

Trained by Mick Fearnley for Geoff Collins, this bloke, who turns two on February 4, might just end up sitting on top of the mountain.

Put his name into your Black Books and keep following him. Chasing $50,000 MYSTIC APPLE and Stagger are in the running for a $50,000 bonus. That’s the amount of money up for grabs as a bonus if any greyhound can win three Victorian Provincial Cups in the same year.

Mystic Apple landed the Cran-bourne Cup, whilst Stagger just landed the Warragul Cup.

Last year El Grand Senor picked up the bonus by winning the Warra-gul, Traralgon and Shepparton Cups.

In 2011 also, Enry Walt ran fourth in the Warragul Cup, won the Horsham and Bendigo Cups, quali-fied as a reserve for the Shepparton Cup, and if he’d gained a run and scored, would have pocketed the bo-nus, instead of El Grand Senor.

And his Cup quest hadn’t fin-ished, although there was only one bonus available, but he then ran 6th in the Healesville Cup.

Not that it counted, but he also made the Melbourne Cup final.

So, based on all of that, it’s defi-nitely possible that the bonus will go off again this year. We’re staggered STAGGER staggered punters when he landed the Group 2 Warragul Cup final at double-figure odds. Like all Country Cups in Victo-ria, this was one tough race and every runner had a genuine winning chance.

Five of the eight were under the double-figure quote, whilst three were at double-figure odds, but only around the $11 to $13 bracket. Stagger went into the $40,000 to the winner race as one of the two that didn’t win a heat, as he’d actually run second to Black Saharrah, beaten just a head in a very slick 25.68. Normally a slow early mad railer, Stagger had a great formline on the track, with four wins and two plac-

ings from eight goes and a smart PB of 25.67. At the end of 2011, he qualified for the Geelong Cup final by beating Mystic Apple (that made the form look good) and from box two; he fin-ished sixth to Dyna Tron. Oddly enough, in the Warragul Cup (which is Geelong’s twin), he had box two also.

And after getting a nice cart off the pace, the son of Primo Uno and Instructed First finished like a train to score a great win for owner trainer, Garry “Gus” Selkrig.

Now again, those people who are against repeat matings should note that Instructed First had a litter to Primo Uno in February 2007, produc-ing the smart Republican and Stagger Inn.

Stagger’s litter, whelped August 2009, includes Mario Chief and Stomp Stomp. Speaking of SPEAKING of being asked why, I was queried once... or twice. I had a dog go around at Ballarat in a 450 metres Free For All and he came in sixth, running around 25.85 (a fair run at the time).

A week later and he’s back in a Grade 5, and appreciating the drop in grade, he wins in 25.91.

Yeah, I was happy with the win. Coming off the track I was met

by a Steward, who then accompanied me, putting the dog away, etc., and then escorted me to the Steward’s Room.

I was asked why my dog had im-proved so much in a week.

Are you kidding me, I replied? I could tell by the glare he was

not. Without going into the rather

heated and long discussion that then took place, I realised that the only thing this bloke could see was com-ing from running sixth to winning, and that was a form reversal in his mind.

Even the other Steward could clearly see that the dog had actually run slower than the week before and was down in grade.

I walked outside and felt like banging my head against the wall hoping to remove my headache.

Either the other Steward informed the bloke in charge, or the penny dropped after he had a better look at the form guide, as he approached me a bit later with an “All’s good”.

I gather that was an apology, but sometimes we all get a case of tunnel vision, I guess. The three champs - 1 THE answers to last week’s Teaser were our three dual National Champi-ons, and I thought I’d take a brief trip down memory lane. Sandi’s Me Mum was a June 1987 daughter of Red Swinger and Sandilock. Red Swinger was one of the best bred stud dogs of his time, being a son of Temlee and Tara Silk. He was a litter brother of cham-pion sire, Nation Parade and cham-pion brood bitch, Promises Free, so it’s not surprising that he threw one

as good as Sandi’s Me Mum. Her dam, Sandilock was a daugh-ter of Pearl King and Blazenka’s Pride and carried plenty of imported blood, as her dam was by Cheers For Akii, whilst Pearl King was a grand-son of Newmore King. For those who didn’t know, Sandi’s Me Mum was trained in Western Australia by the late Gerry O’Keefe.

Early days, she made her way east to Olympic Park in May 1989 for the Maturity Classic, reaching the final and finishing seventh behind Best Of Blue.

Exactly one month later she had reached the final of the Laurels Clas-sic at Sandown and from the pink box scored a five lengths win as a raging hot 8/11 ($1.75) favourite.

Back on her home turf at Can-nington she made it a clean sweep of the 1989 National Sprint Champion-ship by easily taking the Grand Final.

She was back at Sandown in No-vember for the Melbourne Cup but ran third in a heat to eventual winner, Fair Sentence.

In October 1990 she made her way back to Sandown for the Na-tional Sprint Championship Grand Final.

She had 11 consecutive wins against her name when she lined up in box seven to defend her crown, and in the field was champion Victo-rian, Highly Blessed.

Sandi’s Me Mum raced her way into the history books with a two and a half lengths win over Pharspan, with Highly Blessed coming in third.

I guess in one sense we can say she was a little bit fortunate, as she won her first NSC on her home turf and her second on her “home away from home”.

You definitely need a few things in your favour to win a National Crown, but you still have to win it!

In her second victory, she had to beat one of Australia’s greatest sprinters, and had to do it on that chaser’s “home” track.

So it was by no means a “gimme”.

To give you some idea of how good Highly Blessed was, she retired with the staggering amount $310,000 in prizemoney, having won a large percentage of our Group 1 races.

Sandi’s Me Mum, our first dual champion, and our only dual National Sprint Champion. Grew a leg AS A former trainer, I fully realise that a lot can happen in a month with any greyhound you’re training. I spotted a maiden that had just won in the fastest time of the meet-ing, and based on its previous efforts, it looked like it had grown an extra leg.

Basically, it had run eight lengths faster than it had ever run before.

Okay, as I said, a lot can happen with a greyhound, including finding an injury that had been undetected previously or changing the training routine, etc.

I don’t have a problem with it happening when there’s been a period of time since its previous start, but I do frown if it has happened in say under a week.

Now the amazing thing about this form reversal is that this chaser man-aged to win like it did after it was mentioned in the Steward’s Report as being checked early.

What I didn’t find in that report was the trainer being asked why his chaser had improved so much on its previous efforts, and seeing as a 20/1 shot had just done a form reversal and run a very fast time to score, strangely there was no mention of a swab being taken either.

However, this chaser’s littermate also won, and in fast time and a rough calculation it had run around 25 lengths faster than it did at its previ-

ous start, and about the same sort of improvement since its last start on the track at the trip.

Again, no mention of the trainer being questioned, but I did see that it was swabbed.

Oh, and I gather it was “specked”, as it went around at less than double-figure odds when its form suggested at least $34.

I would have thought that all this mystery as to why these dogs had improved so much could have been alleviated simply by asking the trainer, “why”.

He might have had a very logical explanation, but we’ll never know what that is, will we? A letter I RECEIVED a letter from Mr. C. Thorley, who said that he had no ar-gument with my assessment in my GOTY Awards but wanted to point out to me the exploits of Little Mother. So next week I’ll have a look at that dog in more detail and go into the points raised by Mr. Thorley. Your Say “Had The Chop” remarked, “I had a greyhound that was a ‘gelding’.”

“Well, he had them but they were inside, and they had to give him the snip because they were giving him trouble.” Yes, I had one like that. He strug-gled getting around corners, which we put down to that fact but even after they did him, he still struggled with bends. Seems I spent a lot of money for nothing. “Money Bags” with, “I think at the moment we have our stakemoney structured all wrong. The gap be-tween metropolitan and country is too great, whilst the gap between country and non-penalty is not enough.”

“City races should be $4000 to the winner, country races should be $2000 to the winner and non-penalty races should be $500 to the winner.” Sounds good to me! “Old Punter” back with, “I like your trifecta advice.”

Yes, on a dog race, if you can’t get the winner in three picks, you’re travelling bad.” I’ve travelled so bad at times that I couldn’t pick the winner of a solo trial, and it’s true, we were at the Ballarat Qualies one Sunday morn-ing and my mate and I were having a pick in every one going. He was in front and the next one saw just one dog going around. I said “I’ll have the white”, with a grin. The danged thing ran to the back turn, stopped and ran back to the boxes. Knew I should have tipped the lure. This week’s Teaser STRANGE NAMES, just what’s a strange name? See if you can work out who these dogs are (they are stud dogs). 1. He wanted to know the where-abouts of Spanish Pete 2. Another Spaniard, a big man maybe 3. Sounds a bit like Russians falling from the sky 4. This dog’s a man, sort of superb 5. A boy with a song perhaps 6. Two eyes and a ewe, what a strange AKT 7. A male motor on top of a chimney 8. Oh, when love and hate do this Last week’s answers Firstly, there was Sandi’s Me Mum, the winner of two National Sprint Championships. Then there was Boronia Blossom, who won two National Distance Championships. Finally, Dashing Corsair, winner of a National Sprint Championship and a National Distance Champion-ship.

He Knows Uno: Is coming to Melbourne for the big Group races later this month.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 – Page 57NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

GLEN GALLON, trained by Tony Brett, sizzled around the Cannington circuit in a blistering 29.87 to assure his place in this Saturday’s $210,000 Perth Cup final.

The son of Flying Stanley and Incoherent was sent to the boxes the $2.00 favourite and returned with the fourth fastest time ever recorded on the track. It was a good night for favourites, with eight winners starting at even money or less; three of those $1.10 or under.

Whilst the fields were not seeded, all the favoured runners managed to avoid each other, setting up what will be a cracking final. Glen Gallon was away only mod-erately from box six but was aided by Cruiser Mac jumping cleanly in the yellow vest before squeezing the in-side brigade.

The Queenslander mustered bril-liantly and pushed between runners to take the lead, passing the post in 5.70. Tony Brett’s charge ran a blister-ing bend, recording a 13.27 split to be five lengths clear of Big Jo King.

The Group 1 performer eclipsed Octane Show’s third split record (18.58) by a half length to hold an unassailable break leaving the back. Glen Gallon powered to the line, extending his winning margin to 12 lengths over Big Jo King, with Dyna Bert running third to book a spot in the lucrative consolations.

His final split of 11.32 brought up an overall time of 29.87, a tick over a length slower then Miata's track record. Tony Brett was very happy with the run, telling NGF, “He got room early and has the ability to take ad-vantage when that happens.”

“It really is an unbelievable effort by the dog. He goes under the radar a little and he keeps improving and learning." The October 2009 whelp has won 14 of his 25 starts, earning the Veloc-ity Lodge Syndicate a tad over $158,000.

Brett planned to head home Sun-day morning, returning to Perth on Thursday.

Double delight MARK GATT takes double chance into the Perth Cup final, with Oaks Road the second fastest qualifier in 30.28. Oaks Road was the heavily sup-ported $1.20 favourite in a heat after drawing the cherry and by virtue of his 30.37 trial the previous Saturday.

After dwelling at boxrise, Oaks Road pushed up on the paint to lead narrowly over Fifty Six Chevi in 5.76 for the opening stanza.

The son of Spiral Nikita and Lep-rechaun Pace booted four lengths ahead of the pack onto the back sec-tion and entered the final turn five lengths clear in 18.80.

The Sydneysider ran home in 11.48 to record a four lengths victory.

Fifty Six Chevi punched above his weight class to run a solid second in PB time, with Rousay finishing third. After the race Daniel Gatt said, “He drove through well after the jump and overall I am happy with the run, but was disappointed with the run-home time.” Later in the night litter mate Things Missing was ultra impressive in running down Hot Irish to bring up a Cup double for Gatt and owner, Eddie Kingswell. Hot Irish, the even money favour-ite, jumped brilliantly to lead in 5.66, with Thing Missing hot on his tail.

The young speedster blazed the trail with 13.35 and 18.80 splits but never shook-off the $3 hope from New South Wales. Hot Irish took a length lead into the home run but was ground down slowly by Things Missing, who got up to score by a neck in 30.40, with Marked Down third. The powerful “Team Dailly” ken-nel took a strong hand into the series with Lektra Jay and Heston Bale pro-gressing to the final, whilst Dyna Bert and Dyna Tron will have to make do with starts in the $18,000 third place consolation. Lektra Jay, a son of Where's Pedro and 2008 Galaxy winner, Elek-tra, was the $2.00 favourite in the opener. and despite making heavy weather of running down Beau One. saluted in 30.51.

The Victorian had the lamplighter in his sights leaving the back but shifted out on the turn before power-ing home to win by three lengths over Spring Ruler and the tiring Beau One. George Dailly summed up the run succinctly by stating. “It wasn’t a bad run but he needs to go quicker.” Heston Bale was looking to better the 30.21 time standard that he set the previous Saturday and was well sup-ported at $1.40, with Proven Mayhem ($7.40) the only other runner in sin-gle figures.

The favourite was off to a rocky start, crashing heavily with Kalden

Aurora, who had also got away mod-erately.

The David Hobby trained Forty Two Below was away best to pass the first split in 5.71. The first turn was a messy affair with Proficient trying to cross from out wide, squeezing Kalden Aurora, which resulted in Heston Bale being pushed very wide.

The favourite steadied-up quickly and moved to fourth through the pen. The inexperienced Prince Elite was putting the pressure on Forty Two Below along the back before dropping a couple of lengths whilst seeking a rails run that was not avail-able.

Heston Bale had railed up strongly and was within four lengths of the pacesetter. Forty Two Below was still giving plenty of cheek turning for home. with Prince Elite looking inside and outside before stumbling off the leader’s heels. Heston Bale was winding up three wide and came home power-fully to defeat Forty Two Below by a half length, with the luckless Prince Elite a length adrift. George Dailly was pleased with the run of Heston Bale.

“He was knocked everywhere tonight. If he gets a bit of space early and you will see him at his best.”

Cup chat JEFF BRITTON'S Mepunga Geordie ($6.20) backed-up well from an un-placed run in the Warragul Cup to hand in a slashing 30.30 gallop in a heat of the Perth Cup. Mepunga Geordie was the widest of three runners on the pace, re-cording a 5.73 opening split.

The inside brigade, including odds-on pop, Mystic Apple were poleaxed by the fast beginning Flying Machine, who bee-lined to the paint from box five. The Anakie based Victorian moved three lengths clear onto the back, with Flying Machine and Serena to Excel leading the chase.

Mepunga Geordie was highbal-ling in 18.80 entering the final turn and looked to have run his rivals ragged. They came home in Indian file, with Mepunga Geordie five lengths clear of Flying Machine and a further three lengths to third placed Serena To Excel.

The $10,000 first prize took Mepunga Geordie’s earnings to over $45,000 for owner, Barry Smith. Jeff Britton said, “The run on Wednesday proved to be a good hit-out.”

“He was away fairly but ran a good middle section, and we will be hoping for an inside draw.”

Steve McKenna enjoyed his trip to WA with Autoamerican, who up-

staged Melbourne Cup winner, Dyna Tron to win in 30.68.

In a three-way early charge, Dyna Tron pushed between Banzai Pipeline and Autoamerican to lead narrowly into the first turn. A length separated the trio leav-ing the back straight in 18.96, with daylight to Explicit Dancer, who headed the rest after a sluggish start.

Dyna Tron was under siege for home, with Banzai Pipeline turning back the years on the rails and Autoamerican was winding up five wide. McKenna's charge was strongest, getting home a length to the good of Explicit Dancer, who put in a blinder, with Dyna Tron third.

“The race went the way I hoped it would it would.”

“ He is a strong dog who has backed-up well from his Wednesday look at the track,” said McKenna. IT TOOK until the very last race of the night for a locally trained chaser to make it through to the Perth Cup final.

The Linda Britton trained Uno Reltub ($2.80) overcame a moderate jump to muster well and find the early lead from box six. After a tight and bumpy first bend, Uno Reltub pushed through the pen two lengths clear of Devine Law, with Yunderup Miss to his outside.

The same trio left the back in single file, recording a 19.02 sec-tional. Yunderup Miss pushed through to second with the race at her mercy as they straightened for home before losing her focus and doing things terribly wrong.

Uno Reltub kept his mind on the job and scored by a length in 30.74to top-off a bad week for McLaren, who also lost local favourite and likely 2011 Greyhound Of The Year, Vocal Enforcer to injury on the eve of the heats.

Miata’s Galaxy? THIS YEAR’S $120,000 Galaxy final appears to be at the mercy of Paul Stuart’s magnificent chaser, Miata.

The brilliant daughter of Bom-bastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird set the time standard for the series with an 11 lengths win in 41.58. After a moderate start Miata was in early traffic before gliding through the gears to level-up with Kalden Petroni, with the duo colliding at the 530 metres boxes.

The $1.04 favourite led by a length in a sluggish 15.94 sectional, extending her break to six lengths passing the release point. Leaving the back in 29.74, Miata was 10 lengths to the good of Kalden Petroni and recorded a strong 11.84 final section when ringing-up win number 18 from 21 starts.

With four heats, the first two chasers qualified for Saturday’s final. Paul Stuart told us, “I was a bit disappointed with her start but happy with her strong run-home.”

“All is good with her preparation and I am looking forward to this weekend’s final.” Another big gun that made it through, and the most likely danger to Miata, is the Andrea Dailly trained Shimaguni, however, the $1.04 punt-ers elect did not have it all her own way. Dan Biddle’s Kalden Athena took the lead from boxrise and clocked a very smart 15.54 opening split to hold Shimaguni two lengths at bay with a circuit to travel.

The daughter of Big Daddy Cool and Abbadale Gold extended her break to three lengths passing the start point and an upset was on the cards. Shimaguni closed the margin to two lengths through the final turn, with daylight to the others.

In a hard-fought battle, Shima-guni got home by three quarters of a length in a smart 41.84.

The Primo Uno and Messines bitch has an impressive record of 18 wins from 26 outings and looks the testing material. ADELLE BALE was away quickest in a heat but was joined and headed by Kalden Mayhem as they took the bell.

Favourite, Echelon, away well before being checked was seven lengths off the pace fourth. Kalden Mayhem was enjoying the role of pacesetter and had burned away down the back.

The $4.60 hope looked home passing the 642 metres boxes in 29.46, the fastest third split of the night. Kalden Mayhem ran out a 10 lengths winner in a speedy 41.75, with the Keith Harding trained Free-way Fame finishing second.

Echelon carted Adelle Bale off the track in the final turn, with the former found to have an injury re-quiring a stand down and Stewards Satisfactory Trial. Troy Murray was delighted with the run of Kalden Mayhem.

“He is one of the fastest dogs I have trained. Hopefully we can find the lead in the final, and then get a bit of luck.” ZIPPING LAD was sent out overs at $1.10 in a heat devoid of much depth.

The Jason Mackay trained star was not at his best when trialling midweek and also put in a moderate performance to book his place in the Galaxy final.

After taking over at the first turn, he recorded 15.60 and 29.73 splits before paddling home to defeat Mor-tal Combat by four lengths in 42.30.

Laurence Torpy

Mepunga Geordie, seen here with Jeff Britton, took out a Perth Cup heat in 30.30 and beat home some very good sprinters.

Does Paul Stuart’s Miata have to win the Galaxy easily to prove that she is WA’s best racer for quite a while? Last weekend at Cannington the classy bitch strung together nine wins in succession when donkey-licking her rivals by 11 lengths in 41.58. A win this week will elevate her earnings to $159,065 amassed from just 19 starts.

Holyfield KO The Meadows January 25 AFTER WINNING at his first 600 metres start the previous week, Prince Holyfield justified his

$1.40 TAB quote by landing a Grade 5 heat over the middle distance trip at The Meadows last Wednesday afternoon.

Drawn box one, the Diane Bartolo owned chaser missed the kick allowing Giant Kaiser to find the front and take the first split in 9.15.

But Prince Holyfield railed the ears off ’em and took over heading to the back then drew clear.

After passing the next checkpoint in 22.31 with a three lengths break on his rivals, the Ray Bartolo trained son of Token Prince and Betty’s Angel ran ’em ragged.

He scored by an ever-widening nine and a quarter lengths to Giant Kaiser ($26.80) in a new PB 34.92, while third placed Iron Brian ($9.90) was just over a length further astern.

Unbeaten over the 600 metres at The Meadows, Prince Holyfield has won half of his 14 career starts.

Mother and son combo, Diane and Ray Bartolo teamed up with Token Spinner and made it a double on the day.

Also drawn the cherry, Token Spinner led from go to whoa in a 600 metres Grade 5 heat to score in Best Of Day 34.79.

A litter brother of Prince Holyfield, Token Spinner ($2.70 fav) defeated Doug Douglas ($4.50) by three and a quarter lengths, while Six Bob ($2.80) wound up third, nearly four lengths further adrift.

On debut over 600 metres at The Mead-ows, Token Spinner has annexed three wins and four placings from 14 lifetime attempts.

Top Victorian midweek trainer in 2011, Graeme Bate was back in action last week, snaring a double with Paul Wheeler owned racers.

Kick-starting the day for the “dynamic duo” was Battina Bale in a Grade 5 over 525 metres.

Beginning fast from the five trap, Battina Bale ($8.50) was passed by Hendo as they traversed the back straight but got going again.

The blue daughter of Go Wild Teddy and Amity Bale proved a bit too good on the day, beating Hendo ($26.40) by a nose, with Smokey Assassin ($1.40 fav) railing powerfully into third place, a neck away.

It was the fourth win with three runner-up cheques from a dozen outings for Battina Bale, who opened her account at the Norrthcorp Boulevard layout.

The double came to fruition when Imry Bale, a litter brother of Battina Bale, took out a Grade 5.

From the awkward six gate, Imry Bale ($2.20 fav) began well but was outpaced by Greysynd Nitro heading into the initial corner.

And whilst Greysaynd Nitro still seemed to going sweetly, Imry Bale made his move ap-proaching the home turn.

Imry Bale had to call on all of his re-sources before beating Greysynd Nitro ($2.90) by a head in Best Of Day 30.52, while Latifi Luke ($12.60) railed home into third place, albeit eight lengths adrift.

Registering his first win at The Meadows, Imry Bale has won twice with two placings from five career starts.

Longford resident, Les Hughes brought Fire Up Nate to The Meadows last week and sampled instant success over the 600 metres journey.

A winner twice over 520 metres at Sale, the Leigh Jennings owned Fire Up Nate bun-gled the kick but cut to the fence before settling in a rearward position, about four lengths be-hind the pacesetting Party Pastrie.

But with just five opponents, the job was made a bit easier for those coming from be-hind, and Fire Up Nate ($4.10) had moved to second coming off the back.

After Party Pastrie copped a check round-ing the final bend, the East Gippslander stretched out well and scored by nearly four lengths to Icebox ($2.40 fav) in 35.20, with Party Pastrie ($2.60) next across the line.

From 26 raceday appearances, Fire Up Nate (Bombastic Shiraz - Limburg Miss) has notched five wins and 10 placings.

Scissor snipped ’em Grafton January 26 DESPITE the inclement conditions experi-enced for the entirety of the Grafton program on Thursday afternoon, leading greyhound trainer, Darryl Schafer could be excused for thinking that the sun was shining on him, as he led in three winners, whilst Garry Geary, Sandy Robertson and Dave Irwin were not far behind with winning doubles.

However, it was Sonia Kempshall who was sporting the biggest smile of all on the day as she took out the feature event.

Lining up from the rails alley in the Carters Canine Capers Blue Paws final over 480 me-tres, Sonia’s greyhound was sent to the boxes as one of the outsiders at a healthy $11.00 on the NSW TAB, but she certainly didn't race like an outsider.

Nasty Kantasta began nicely from her inside draw to quickly take up the early lead.

It was at that moment that the cheers from her connections in the stand began, and they only got louder in the run to the line, as she staved-off the late challenges of Stafford Swagman and Premier Demand to score by just over a length in 27.83.

Darryl Schafer can be justifiably pleased with the efforts of his greyhounds, as he ven-tured to the track with a team of four that net-ted him the three winners, each being a mem-ber of his Collision and Itza Girl Trick litter.

Firstly it was the speedy Elly Mae Trick that led from pillar to post in the Iluka Bowls Club Stake over 480 metres.

Never challenged at any stage, Elly Mae Trick went on to defeat Regent Rose by six and a half lengths in 27.65, with Brahminy Kite a further half length away third.

Next cab off the rank was Curly Trick, who did well to overcome early interference and finished too well for Sure Destiny and Do Ya Block, racing away with the Al’s Mechanical Stake to score in 23.41.

Curly Trick looks to have a handy future, which will certainly see him racing over longer distances in future.

His litter brother went slightly quicker in the Caldwell Electrical 5th Grade over 407 metres, clocking 23.25.

Moe Trick, like his brother, finished full of running and raced away from Didn’t Mean It and Aussie We Know.

He too should get a strong 500 metres before long.

Likable local trainer, Garry Geary is al-ways good for a laugh, and after his two win-ners at the start of the program he was at his comedic best.

He quipped that the floodgates had opened after he’d led in his first winner for just on 12 months.

It was an obvious ‘tongue in cheek’ com-ment, given the deluge of rain that Grafton has received over the past week.

One Red Thong commenced proceedings in style, showing all of her customary dash from the boxes in the Kleenheat Gas Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 305 metres. Hot-footing it, One Red Thong set up an unassailable lead rounding the turn and try as they may, her pursuers could not make any real impression.

The daughter of Give Me Five and Jen Ex Dingo went on to defeat Clappin' Bear and Alota Time by three and a half lengths.

For Garry, it was almost a case of déjà vu in the Grafton Truck & Trailer Repairs Maiden as the race was run almost identically to the previous. Retro Night speared straight to the front at boxrise then also scored by three and a half lengths and ran similar time of 17.79.

Certainly with the early speed of the abovementioned duo, it won’t be another 12 months before Garry enters the winners circle again.

The Dave Irwin trained Scissor Queen has always shown plenty of promise, and one of her owners, Ben George has regularly sug-gested that under the right conditions she was capable of breaking the 23-seconds barrier.

One could be excused for thinking that torrential rainfall might not provide those condi-tions, but nobody told Scissor Queen, who was absolutely in devastating form, recording best of day figures 22.85 for the 407 metres jour-ney, set up by a new record first section of 8.25.

Call Of Silence ran a gallant second, just three and three quarter lengths away, with a further seven lengths to third placed Yorklea Sunrise.

Bralyn Midge racked-up a double Dave when the classy campaigner had too much dash for his rivals in the PFD Foodservices Free For All. in the early stages Bralyn Midge staged a speed battle with Just The Phantom and even-tually got the better of him by the first turn.

From thereon, Bralyn Midge was never going to be caught, defeating Just The Phan-tom by five lengths, with Red John a close third.

The Junction Hill trainer would have been a relieved man when his promising but injury-plagued sprinter, Tranquil Zac got up in the Clarence Valley Sheds Maiden.

Despite making a few wrong decisions when attempting to navigate a run around the leader, Dinjerra Cash, Tranquil Zac eventually found a passage in the home straight and got up by a length to Dinjerra Cash, with Bob’s Fiesta third.

Tranquil Go To was also successful in the Bailey & Gough Real Estate Maiden.

It has been many a year since Beech-wood trainer, Maureen West has had a runner here at Grafton, but she made her return a successful one when Cool Hand Coote streeted his opposition in the Armidale to Graf-ton final.

Gitcha Mo scored a nice win for Graeme Dunn in the Greyhound Products Direct Stake.

The Lidsdale conditioner, who had his most successful year in 2011, is a third gen-eration trainer.

“I’m 41 and have been around grey-hounds since I was a toddler,” Chapman told NGF. “My father, Pat bred Opal Lane and also Shamrock Lane, who was the Penrith middle distance record holder.”

“His father, Jack had become involved because he had a handicapped son who could not play sport.”

“So Jack bought him a greyhound, and that's where it started for our famliy.”

Chapman says Barry Lazzarini, a suc-cessful trainer since the 1950’s, and the late Les Brien from Riverstone, were his training mentors.

********** FANS of the defunct Wade Park track would have been delighted with the talent in the Orange Cup.

The circuit closed in 2005 when the Orange club merged with Bathurst.

But memories of Wade Park are rekin-dled annually with the Orange Cup.

A contact made whilst President of Toongabbie Bowling Club enabled lawn bowler and hobby greyhound trainer, Adam Wade to buy Orange Cup finalist, Kyl’s Me Girl eight months ago.

“Kyl’s Me Girl was originally part-owned by her breeder, Vince Bennett and Phil Hall, who I knew through bowls,” Wade said.

“After winning a few races at Wentworth Park she became outgraded, so they decided to sell her.”

“Although she is known as a front-runner, she has got stronger with maturity.”

Wade, manager of a construction com-pany, has little time for lawn bowls these days.

He has 15 greyhounds in work, with his brother, Paul caring for the team on a prop-erty at Londonderry.

Like Chapman, the Wades had their most successful year in 2011 and continued the winning streak when Tanarama Glamma won at Wentworth Park on Saturday night.

Tanarama Glamma is owned by Adam Wade’s daughter, Emma, who celebrated her

19th birthday on Saturday. Tanarama Glamma is a daughter of Scar

Crash, described by connections as a race bitch who had been “fast, but a bad chaser”.

Nevertheless, Scar Crash’s first two litters have produced prolific winners.

********** PAUA OF LOVE, latest offspring of Hall of Fame inductee, Paua To Burn, easily won her much-anticipated Wentworth Park debut on Saturday night.

Trained by Steve White, who bred and trained Paua To Burn, Paua Of Love had box eight in the Pages Event Equipment Stake.

Paua Of Love has inherited much of the ability of her famous mum, who broke five track records and won four Group 1 races, including the 1990 Golden Easter Egg.

“She is a sister to Paua Of Darkness and is as quick, if not faster, than her brother,” White revealed.

Paua Of Love has now won each of four starts at Appin, Bulli and Wenty Park in sen-sational fashion since her career got off to a late start.

“She always had talent but got water diabetes and later came in season,’ White said. “Then, when I again had her ready to race, she tore a hip support.”

********** DESPITE SCORING his 13th win in just 27 starts recently, Blackalls Boss won't be seen at Wentworth Park, or even his local tracks The Gardens and Gosford.

Trained by Michael Crawford at Blackalls Park on Lake Macquarie, near Toronto, the dog led throughout over 472 metres at Bulli in a slick 26.50.

Blackalls Boss' sectional time was 9.97, just .02 slower than Prince Diablo’s first split en route to his 26.02 win in the Cyril Rowe Gold Plate later that night.

“He is purely a one-turn track dog who needs a long straight to balance-up,” said Crawford.

“Blackalls Boss would have loved the old Harold Park and Cessnock tracks.”

“When he once clocked only 30.80 in a trial at Wenty Park he looked at me as if to say, why did you do that to me?”

“He can get around tight tracks but is half a second slower than he is on roomy courses, like Bulli and Maitland.”

“Blackalls Boss’ four wins at Bulli have made that six hours round trip worthwhile.”

Crawford, who works in real estate, trained greyhounds 30 years ago but quit to raise a family.

He returned a decade back with Black-alls Beauty, dam of his current star.

“Blackalls Beauty, who was also a good racer, had seven pups but four died at eight weeks of age,” Crawford said.

“I finished up with Blackalls Boss and his two sisters, but they were too erratic to be successful.” Crawford trains only Blackalls Boss, which he owns with wife, Joanne and son, Andrew.

********** TIME CONSTRAINTS imposed by his owner trainer’s work have limited three year-old Sandon Swell to just 16 starts, but the under-rated speedster notched his eighth win at Bulli on Monday.

“The dog has had wrist and muscular injuries as well as a dose of kennel cough, but my work has mostly restricted his racing,” Jones told NGF. “I do 12-hour shifts in a Mt. Kembla coalmine and can’t train the dog for three days at a time.”

“Once I sent him to a professional trainer, but Sandon Swell didn’t like being in a big kennel and fretted for me.”

“He is a real one man dog, so just have to race him when I can.”

“I paid $4000 for him at three months of age because he was so well bred.”

“His dam, Shannon Widd is from the same litter as Trewly Special, Go Forever and Two Up Larry, all topliners.”

“And Shannon Widd is a daughter of Chloe Jones, the dam of National Derby winner, Borat.”

“My dream is to eventually buy a small property and breed greyhounds, but at this stage I’ve got a mortgage and young family, so I’ll remain a one dog trainer for quite a while.”

********** SYD SWAIN is training a hot prospect for connections of Cool Flight, his 2009 Rich-mond Derby winner. At his first public appearance, Billy The Sid led throughout to win a 515 metres Gos-ford trial in 29.99… a fast time for a juvenile… and made his debut at Gosford recently.

Billy’s bonus Healesville January 29 SLIPAWAY BILLY collected the GOBIS Bonus by taking out the 300 metres Maiden Final on Sunday.

Sent out at $7.00 from box four, the Gra-ham Hughes trained sprinter scored by a length over Farmer Jenny ($9.30), with Talon Miss ($2.50 fav) coming in third, a length and a quarter away.

Slipaway Billy, a son of El Galo and Sli-paway Lil, owned by the Ronbar Syndicate, registered the new PB time of 16.92. Parumba Phil took out the Veterans Spe-cial Event over 350 metres.

After lining up in box four at $28.00, the son of Diffuser and Lizola saluted by three quarters of a length over Arvo’s Josie ($4.50), with Sparrow Baz ($11.40) collecting third money, a neck away.

Parumba Phil, who recorded 19.70, is trained by Greg Paez for Jessie Fowler.

Normal Like You ran the new PB and BOD time of 16.45 to take out the 300 metres Mixed 4th/5th Grade.

Rated on top at $2.60 from box six, the Andrew Paraskevas trained sprinter defeated Domain Prince ($14.50) by five and three quarter lengths, with Sooty Smith ($4.80) a length and three quarters further afield.

A winner of 16 of his 30 outings, Normal Like You is a son of Brett Lee and Brandeen Misty, owned by the Sparkle And Fade Syndi-cate.

Arrow Straight took time honours over the 350 metres by posting 19.11 to score in a Grade 5.

Listed as a reserve but gaining a start in box four, the son of Vapour Whirl and Rapid Fun was at $6.90 before beating Mambo Magic ($3.30 fav) by a length and a half, with Only Bluffing ($6.40) the next to arrive, two and three quarter lengths away.

Arrow Straight, owned and trained by Robert and Wendy Cunningham, at his sev-enth start recorded his third win.

Lad looms large OUT OF LUCK in previous Dublin finals, John Linehan’s Broadstrand Lad came good on the major stage when running out a convincing winner of the €7,000 Tyrur McGuigan @ Stud Open 575 at Shelbourne on Saturday night.

In the absence of Martinstown Snow, which was withdrawn on Saturday morning due to illness, Broadstrand Lad went off the 9/4 favourite, with reserve, Tibetan Skies the 3/1 joint second favourite along with Tyrur Willyjoe.

Broadstrand Lad quickly assumed control and led into the bend from Ohio Rumble. Croom Star slipped through to second on the rail at this point but could make no significant inroads into the leader’s advantage.

Then Tyrur Domingo and Tibetan Skies arrived fast into the third bend.

While Broadstrand Lad galloped on to victory up front, there was quite a battle for the second money.

Broadstrand won by two and a half lengths in 31.59, but the photo couldn’t sepa-rate Tyrur Domino and Tibetan Skies as they shared second spot.

This victory completed a great Tyrur double for the Billy Drake and Vincent O’Donovan owned Broadstrand Lad, as the son of Hallucinate and Kiln Lark had won the Tyrur Kennels Open 575 at Curraheen Park just before Christmas.

The semi-finals of the Joe Dunne Memo-rial provided a great back-up to the Tyrur decider, and here the Seamus Graham trained Swift Marathon stormed back into contention.

He got away smartly and held off a suc-cession of challenges to the third bend before moving on again on the run-in for a three and a half lengths margin over Ballybough Hawke in 28.68, while Swords Jacko was a neck away third.

Fraser Black’s Droopys Jet maintained his career unbeaten record in the second semi but would have to be declared a slightly fortunate done.

Noirs Buachaill actually showed just in front going into the opening bend but he was by far the bigger sufferer after a bump be-tween the pair on the corner.

Droopys went on by two and a half lengths but Noirs Buachaill then rallied strongly and just a short head separated them at the line in 28.84, with Subway Gerry some

four lengths third. The draw for Saturday’s final: 1. Droopys Jet; 2. Swift Marathon; 3. Swords Jacko; 4. Noirs Buachaill (m); 5. Ballybough Hawke (w); 6. Subway Gerry (w)

Some stars of last season returned to action following lengthy lay-off and gave promise of much better to come.

James Byrne’s Coolykereen Imp led all the way in an open 525 for a length and a half margin over Tyrur Lucky in 28.75, and English Derby finalist, Barefoot Bullet also ran nicely when third in this contest.

Conor Fahy’s Tyrur Lanney was impres-sive as he won an open 550 by a length and a half from Fastaway King, and Michael O’Con-nor’s Whitefort Lough came from last to first to snatch a dramatic short head victory over Lewcas Thunder in the concluding Open 575 in 31.66.

One of the best runs of the night was the 28.52 from Marie Gilbert’s Allen Grove when winning a semi-final of an Open 525, whilst the other heat was won by the Davy Reynolds trained bitch, Laytown Coast in 28.81.

Former Irish star stayer gained her first success since her return from the UK when coming from last to first to win an Open 750 with a late rush and a margin of a half length over Yvonnes Flame in 42.60.

Again the Limerick star A TRACK record breaker in the opening round, Graham Holland’s flying early paced bitch, Calling Spice again set the pace in the second round of the Vetsearch Recharge Open 525 at Limerick on Saturday.

She flew clear to the bend and won by six and a half lengths in a flying 28.31 from Airforce Newyork.

Other heat winners were Saleen Tompa-joe (28.98), Ogie Tom (28.41) and Boherna House (28.38).

Coursing preview GREYHOUND MANIA has hit the town of Clonmel in County Tipperary, and the flames

won’t be extinguished until the celebrations die down early on Thursday morning.

The annual circus, also known as the National Coursing Meeting, takes place through to Wednesday afternoon and grey-hound enthusiasts will turn up in their thou-sands from all corners of the globe.

In addition to the coursing at Powerstown Park, they will have some high-class racing on the local track each evening.

I have got so many tips for the two clas-sics up the field at this stage that a state of utter confusion is threatening to set in.

Those who will be smiling most are the bookmakers, with a few massive gambles yet to take place.

Favourites for the past few weeks for the boylesports.com Derby have been Solid Monk and Offshore Eoin on the 8/1 mark, while sponsors John and Liam Boyle have two strongly fancied contenders, litter comrades Ashmore Master and Ashmore Sambo.

My original fancy to land the dog classic was Offshore Eoin, but the draw then handed him a dreadful first round draw against the similarly strong fancied Path Of Peace, which represents the formidable Pa Fitzgerald and Patsy Byrne team.

This course could well decide the classic, but could also take its effect on the winner.

In the circumstances, the safest way to go could be to support Noreen McManus and James Mulcahy’s Belated Birthday, a son of Tynwald Smokey that qualified nicely at Cork.

He has been the medium of huge sup-port and is the new 7/1 favourite with the sponsors.

Others to consider are Michael O’Dono-van’s Cuddly Man, the medium of very en-couraging reports, and Solid Monk.

Disappointing news on the Greyhound & Petworld Oaks front is the withdrawal of lead-ing fancies Kingsmill Eye and Alainn.

The strong favourite is Fives Treasure, but she is expected to face strongly backed second favourite, Barrack Bimbo on Tuesday morning in the second round.

This could be an epic clash. There are strong whispers for the likes of

Careful Holly and Glenvale Katie, while Ravel Glory is another with a big following.

Coursing commences at 11.30 each day through to Wednesday, while racing at the local track will commence at 7.30 pm each evening.

Leader of the pack. Just In Black heads for the finishing line to snare the fourth race at Healesville on Sunday, January 29.

Parumba Phil broke a run of defeats with his 19.70 victory on January 29.

FOR the second time within a month, Know Peace unleashed a potent finish on Wan-ganui’s Hatrick Raceway to secure another Group 1 victory when nailing the Opawa Racing Wellington Cup.

It was a local Wellington Champion Sprint win delivered by Stately Babe, while Mamaja landed a deserved win in the feature Memorial Day event at the Addington Race-way.

Canterbury trainers Dave and Jean Fahey had dominated the previous week’s Opawa Racing Wellington Cup heats when they provided the race quinella in both.

Despite having to scratch Sideshow Bob, they were still left with a potent looking three-pronged attack on this recently re-instated Group 1 event for a $22,500 stake.

Know Peace, who won the Group 1 $35,000 Spion Rose Cup on this track the previous month, had posted the fastest time of the two heats for his Pave The Way own-ing syndicate.

When 520 metres traps lifted in the final, it was the Lisa Ahern trained reserve runner, Darlyne Ottey that pinged away to set the pace.

She led the field down the back straight, being tracked through by Freddy John.

Sam I Am for the Fahey’s was tucked away just in behind them, while Know Peace was trucking along sweetly in the midfield.

On the home turn Freddy John had mastered the pacemaker and briefly looked to be the Wellington Cup winner, with Know Peace still lurking back in the midfield.

However, the final sectional that Know Peace put in must have been a real potent effort, as he fairly flew to get up for his head victory after 30.10 seconds of intense chas-ing. Freddy John was gallant in holding second, while also finishing stoutly to claim third was the Fahey trained Ultimate Dream, a length and a quarter further behind, just nosing out his kennelmate for that placing.

Know Peace and Jean Fahey with the Wellington Cup.

HE KNOWS UNO, Oaks Road and Zipping Lad have been named as the nominees for the 2011 Betfair NSW Greyhound Of The Year. A special panel of judges which included representatives from News Limited, Fairfax, Sky Racing and the Greyhound Recorder met today to finalise the nominees at the offices of Greyhound Racing NSW. Experts have predicted that the 2011 Betfair NSW Greyhound Of The Year award will be one of the closest in recent memory after a number of outstanding performances from NSW greyhounds throughout the year. Flying finisher, He Knows Uno, trained by Michael Patterson on the NSW North Coast, was one of the most consistent greyhounds in 2011,

taking part in 10 Group finals. His highlights were winning the Group 3 Flying Amy and the Group 3 Rover Mowers Cup, as well as finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Golden Easter Egg. Oaks Road, trained by Mark Gatt at Thirlmere, booked his ticket into the top three with several outstanding performances that included a second placing in the Group 1 Paws Of Thunder and a terrific win in the Group 3 Dapto Megastar. Super stayer, Zipping Lad, trained at Richmond Vale in the Hunter by Jason Mackay, had a remarkable 2011 that saw him traverse three states competing for Group 1 glory. His highlights included gaining a spot in the Group 1 National Distance Championship in Brisbane, finishing

second in the Group 1 Sale Cup and scoring a well deserved victory in the Group 3 Summer Cup. T h e 2 0 1 1 B e t f a i r NS W Greyhound Of The Year will be announced at a special ceremony at the Sydney Hilton on Friday, March 2. Other awards set to be announced on the night include the state’s leading sprinter, stayer, sire, brood bitch, media coverage, volunteer, young person, Trainer and Club of the Year. Tickets can now be purchased for $120, which includes a three course dinner, drinks and entertainment. To book your spot at the 2011 Betfair NSW Greyhound of the Year awards please visit www.thedogs.com.au or call GRNSW on (02) 8767 0500.

FIRST ROUND invitations have been sent out to trainers of greyhounds vying to qualify for the Group racing extravaganza at The Meadows on February 18, including the Group 1 Temlee (525m), Group 2 Rookie Rebel (600m) and Group 2 Zoom Top (725m), all sponsored by Macro Meats. The who’s who of greyhound stars (listed below) have been invited to show their interest in competing against the best chasers in the country, with over $200,000 in prizemoney to be given away over the three ‘by invitation only’ races. The Meadows Manager, Marg Long announced that choosing the list of invitees is no mean feat, but the end result is one of amazing quality. “It really is a very difficult process to collect all the contenders from across Australia, so we thank our interstate personnel who assist in the process. This is easily one of the most exciting list of greyhounds put

together, and some of the potential clashes between the best chasers in the land over all three distances means that all eyes will be on The Meadows on February 18 for what is a great start to the Australian Cup Carnival. The Carnival is one of the world’s biggest greyhound extravaganzas, with over $800,000 to be won over the famous three-week period (February 18, 25 and March 3). The Carnival includes the running of the Group 1 MTD Australian Cup ($175,000 to the winner), the Group 1 Macro Meats Super Stayers ($75,000) the Group 1 Macro Meats Temlee ($75,000), the Group 2 Macro Meats Rookie Rebel ($40,000) and the Group 2 Macro Meats Zoom Top ($40,000). Invitations to nominate for the G1 Temlee, G2 Rookie Rebel or G2 Zoom Top have been posted and expressions of interest close on Thursday, February 2, before the panel announces the final field days later.

The Road to Hell Greyhound Racing New South Wales has recently taken the courageous step to authorise the use of Prednisolone for the treatment of pannus, an autoimmune inflammation of the cornea. This condition is common in greyhounds and generally seen in dogs that are three and over. The Press Release appears to have set an upper limit of three drops per day in each eye. The release specifically says that Prednisolone acetate and its metabolites will be exempt substances for greyhounds registered with GRNSW as pannus sufferers. This would appear to be a positive and progressive move, whereby greyhounds suffering would be lessened and his career would be prolonged. Indeed in human athletics, topical cortico-steroid treatments are allowable

during most competitions. As are asthma medications, ‘over the counter’ pain relievers and also caffeine. I seem to remember someone once telling me never to bet on anything with only two legs! Predisolone is one of the most potent anti-inflammatories in the pharmaceutical larder and for the word anti-inflammatory we can substitute pain killer. Add to this, that most of the greyhounds suffering from this disease are in the twilight of their career; the benefit from substituting the ocular dose to an oral dose for that greyhound that has general wear and tear or even arthritis would be substantial.

Prednisolone acetate is widely available as an oral anti-inflammatory and is especially popular in the treatment of osteo-arthritis, where it gives great relief, but in the long-term has some unsavoury side-effects, the main one being diabetes mellitus or sugar diabetes. I have worked in both the old world and this new world down under. Pannus is a rare disease in the UK and Ireland, and confined to greyhounds with high levels of Australian breeding. The different intensity of ultra violet light is both areas in the globe may well be a factor, but it is a problem that has been bred into Australian greyhounds. Policies like this are destined to prolong and intensify the problem. The ‘Road to Hell’ is indeed paved with good intentions.

Please note: The panel also has a policy whereby exceptional performances by a greyhound between panel meetings may justify the extension of a late invitation to either the Group 1 Temlee, Group 2 Rookie Rebel or Group 2 Zoom Top

2011 might prove to be a huge year for Angela Jackson and Bobby Boucheau. The multiple Group winner, who excelled over both the 595 and 715 metres trips last year, was crowned the Sandown Park Greyhound Of The Year. He is also on the short list for Victorian and Australian Greyhound Of The Year titles.

GREYHOUND Racing Victoria (GRV) advises participants of a slight change to the Victorian Lure System that will come into effect at all Victorian racetracks from 1 February, 2012. The adjustment concerns a ‘squeaker’ being added, to allow grey-hounds to both hear and see the lure. GRV has taken this decision after consultation with the Greyhound Owners Trainers Breeders Association (GOTBA) and after successful trials at various Victorian tracks during the past three

months. Geoff Collins, President of the GOTBA, said feedback regarding the new system has been positive. “From our discussions with owners and trainers we have found this particular system to be the most popular.” “Trainers will be able to start training their pups with the new lure which will assist them as they make their way to the racetrack. This is a step forward for Victorian racing,” Collins said.
