FAMILIES CAME along in droves to see Santa and his helpers at Wen-tworth Park last Saturday night.

The GBOTA’s Annual Christmas Spectacular is always a great night, however, this year there was one ex-tra jewel in the crown. Noble Pedro produced a career best effort to take the Group 3 Christ-mas Gift final and stunned the crowd with a 29.43 track record perform-ance that meant Queen Lauryn’s three and half year old feat was replaced. This final had twists and turns every way you looked at it through the week, with a wide open betting market that saw Fancy Dean being the popular pick, whilst it was better than each-way odds about the others. The start was always going to impact the final result, and when the lids rose it was Fancy Dean in the white vest that appeared to jump best.

However, very quickly the out-side pack swamped the favourite and they charged down the outside, with Noble Pedro from box six bullocking his way across the face of the field. Leaving the straight Noble Pedro worked to the front, and as they spread out behind him, the white and brindle chaser shot clear, with Devine Law and Undisputed Dos heading the remainder. Noble Pedro was in full flight coming off the back and clock watch-ers were getting excited as a record run was looming.

Turning for home Noble Pedro had bolted away with the $25,000 first prize, and to the cheers of many, he hit the line a decisive nine and a quarter lengths winner over Devine Law, with Undisputed Dos a further three quarters of a length away third.

All eyes were focussed on the infield semaphore as the time sat on 29.4… knowing the current best stood at 29.44.

The judge then adjusted the deci-mal and semaphored 29.43, which brought further chaos as connections and followers realised what had just occurred. Noble Pedro, by Where’s Pedro out of Miss Beeslee, owned by Tim Caines, who prepared the dam with his mum, to win the Ladies Bracelet in 2008.

From 40 starts to date the 32kg chaser, who has won from every box, has produced 21 victories with eight placings which have contributed to earnings in excess of $80,000.

Devine Law (Collision x Majestic Rush) for trainer Pat Parelli, has had 28 starts showing eight wins and 12 placings, whilst the Andy Lord pre-pared Undisputed Dos (Pure Octane x Dos Santos) has had 58 career starts for 21 wins and 21 placings.

One other interesting piece of trivia from the race is that in 2008, the Steve Hawkins owned Queen Lauryn created the 29.44 track record in a semi-final of that year’s Ladies Bracelet.

In the final, Queen Lauryn was belted from pillar to post, and in a run-of-year award, was narrowly beaten by Miss Beeslee.

“Hawko” passed on the comment post-race, “well, at least we had the record”.

Last Saturday night Miss Beeslee again became the thorn in Hawko’s side.

In 2009 she whelped a litter that included Noble Pedro. and it was this son who removed Queen Lauryn from the record books once again.

Bell chimes in EARLIER in the night the Ron Bell trained Krazy Fraz put in a career best effort at her sixth win at headquarters and a 29.80 performance.

From the race though, the jury is out on some current top-graders, who look miles below their best and are

not offering much opposition at pre-sent. Exiting box seven, Krazy Fraz began well and charged down the outside and jammed the inside run-ners as he crossed to the fence, with many seriously inconvenienced. Krazy Fraz was left well clear down the back with Shady’s Lesson, Young Snozz and Prince Diablo set-ting out after the leader, but the bird had flown. Turning for home Krazy Fraz was well clear, and despite Young Snozz taking some ground off the leader, Krazy Fraz won by two and a half lengths to Young Snozz, with Prince Diablo getting up for third, a further three and half lengths away.

By Hallucinate from CawbourneFraz, Krazy Fraz has raced 30 timesfor 14 wins and four placings.

Young Snozz (Collision x SpecialOsti), trained by Jason Mackay, hashad 22 career starts for eight wins andnine placings, whilst John Finn’s Prince Diablo (Premier Fantasy xBest Of Diablo) to date has had 33starts for 15 wins and six placings.

AND SPEAKING of Jason Mac-kay, one statistic that will emergevery shortly is that in 2011 the Rich-mond Vale based mentor will havehad a 42% win ratio strike rate.

An absolutely incredible feat, asthis is nearly a victory every secondstarter… and he’s had plenty of those.

Personalities galore were on hand at the Christmas Gift presentation on Saturday night. Taking centre stage is new track record holder, Noble Pedro, who ran 29.43 for Mary Wright and Tim Caines, whilst on the Wentworth Park dais to the left is Devine Law with Pat Parelli and to the right it’s Anthony Lord with Undisputed Dos .

MELBOURNE CUP winner, Dyna Tron captured his second Group 1 win in the apace of a month when he ran down star Tasmanian chaser, Re-wind to take out the $107,000 Ace-land Hobart Thousand final over 461 metres at Tattersall's Park in Hobart last Thursday night. The Andrea Dailly trained dog gave away a start and overcame a severe check before running down Morrie Strickland’s kennel star in the shadows of the post, scoring by a nose, with the winner’s litter brother and kennelmate, Dyna Bert almost seven lengths astern. It has been a rollercoaster ride for

the connections of Dyna Tron, who has made an impact on the national stage over the past two months. Dyna Tron (Collision - Gold Rush Bale) won the Group 2 Geelong Cup before scoring impressively in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup, after which he travelled to Queensland to

contest a heat of the Brisbane Cup, which he won, but he was run down in the final by Glen Gallon. Dyna Tron was in the care of the trainer’s husband, Tom Dailly for the dog’s Tasmanian campaign. “This dog has just shone these past two months,” Dailly said. “His confidence is at an all-time high and I think that’s what has taken him to this new level,” he said. “This was probably his best win because Rewind is an extremely hard dog to chase down when he is on the lure.” “To be honest, when my dog copped that check nearing the home turn I thought to myself that second place is not bad money.” “But Dyna Tron is in such great form that he did what I thought was the impossible,” he said. Dailly is amazed by the turn-around in Dyna Tron’s recent form. “I don’t know what it is, but the dog has definitely got a new attitude to racing.” “It might be maturity or that his confidence has lifted because he has had clear runs and winning, which is making him think that he can beat these dogs.” “He has become very tenacious and is racing like a dog possessed,” he said. Dailly said he is unsure of Dyna Tron’s immediate future. “We will just have a look at the Group book that tells you what races are coming up, and we’ll go from there.” “No doubt he’ll have at least two weeks off for a freshen-up, but pro-vided he comes through this well, he

should be back in action just after Christmas,” he said. Dailly also was im-pressed with kennelmate, Dyna Bert’s effort to finish third. “Dyna Bert was an enormous run because he’s got knocked from pillar to post but he’s just kept coming to run third. I am very proud of his effort,” Dailly said. Whilst the accolades were poured on the win-ner, there was plenty to like about the effort of the runner-up, Rewind, who stood to give trainer, Mor-rie Strickland his first Group success after 56 years in the game. “I’m fairly sure it took a champion (Dyna Tron) to deprive my dog victory tonight,” Strickland said. “I thought my dog had won it from where I was watching the race and I got a bit excited, but there you go, I’ve run second and that’s that.” “This was my big chance to win this race.” “It’s every Tasmanian trainer’s dream to win a Hobart Thousand, and this is probably one that got away,” he said. Rewind (Collide – Ricky’s Angel) began bril-liantly from box seven to cross to the rail, whilst Dyna Tron hunted up along the rail from box two to challenge at the top turn, with Bergermeister poised to strike behind the eventual winner.

Dyna Tron checked off Rewind’s heels on the home turn, and that cost him a couple of lengths. But such is the tenacity of Dyna Tron that he set sail after Rewind and in a head-bobbing finish, grabbed victory in the very last stride. Dyna Tron’s owner and breeder,

Paul Wheeler was thrilled with the win. “I rate this win just as important as the Melbourne Cup because the Hobart Thousand is such a highly respected race that’s been around for almost 80 years and it's a privilege to win it,” Wheeler said.

BILL AND DIANE Crooks headed off to Albion Park last Thursday night to celebrate their ninth wedding anniversary.

And celebrate they did. That’s because their star gal-

loper, Metz Magic landed the 600 metres Big Dog Challenge final.

Metz Magic scored by a length and three quarters over Isadel, with a length and three quarters to third placed Mercy Rule.

The winner ran 35.04 for his eighth win in 20 starts, taking his prizemoney to $110,000.

But the Challenge victory al-most didn’t come off.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Witheren's Girl had hurt a hock, his back and a hip support when third in a heat of the Chal-lenge at Albion Park the previous week.

It was left to his trainer, Ron Ball to repair him in time for the final.

Ball again showed why he is one of Australia’s great greyhound trainers, as Metz Magic overcame those injuries that at one time looked likely to end his career and stormed home to win the Chal-lenge. Bill Crooks said he saw the dog on the Friday after his heat run and thought then that the dog’s career may have been over.

“It’s a miracle that Ron has got this dog right and back on the track within a week,” said Bill.

“He could not get off his bed, and Ron and Serena (Ball’s part-ner) had to feed the dog on his bed on Saturday, Sunday and Mon-day.”

Crooks said Metz Magic was only able to be walked on the Tuesday and Wednesday before the final.

“Ronny has worked on him all week,” said Bill. “He didn’t de-cide until race morning that the dog was able to run.”

“And for Metz Magic to come out and win and run 35.04... well that says it all.”

Metz Magic has been crying out for more distance for the past few months, ever since he won the Group 1 National Sprint in August.

“We have to see how he pulls up first obviously before seeing what can be done with the dog in the future,” said Crooks.

Crooks said the video replay of the third in Metz Magic’s heat run showed he was turned side-ways in the home straight, and he believes that was where the dog had sustained his injuries.

Isadel ran a great race, leading until the last few strides.”

Mercy Rule earned valuable points in her bid to chase down Abby Shiraz in Albion Park’s Greyhound Of The Year points race.

Abby Shiraz holds a two point lead over Mercy Rule in that bat-tle. What’s in a name? WHEN Rockhampton’s leading owner trainer, Dallas Beckett sent two littermates to Col Byers in Toowoomba to train five weeks ago, Col was excited.

The pair included Spring News, who Dallas was convinced was the best greyhound that he had trained.

The litter brother, Ability To Speed, had lived in Spring News’ shadow.

But not so now. Col Byers had to pinch him-

self after Ability To Speed made his debut at Albion Park a winning one when successful in a heat of the Christmas Stocking over 520 metres last Thursday night.

Byers trains the son of Paddy’s Flame and Montana Belle for Moura owner, Dallas.

They have been a success-ful combination for years.

“This is the best dog Dallas has sent me,” said Col after Abil-ity To Speed had led throughout to win by a length and three quarters over El Grover, with six lengths to High Energy third.

It was his 12th victory in 25 starts, and.Ability To Speed has been in Byers’ kennel for a little more than a month.

“You can expect a lot of im-provement on that run,” said Col.

“He had not been on the track and had missed some work this week in the lead-up to tonight’s race."

The dog had been tender in a hock when checked over the week before, but Col worked on it to get the dog right for last week’s heat.

Ability To Speed came to Byers’ kennel as the understudy to Spring News, his litter brother, who had been the better of the two when racing for Beckett in Rock-hampton.

But Ability To Speed has not put a foot wrong since coming south, winning three in a row at Ipswich and now a heat of the Christmas Stocking.

“Spring News always had the wood on Ability To Speed when they were racing in Rockhampton (for owner, Dallas Beckett),” said Col.

“But both Dallas and I have been surprised by the way Ability To Speed has gone down here.”

Ability To Speed won three in a row when he first arrived in Col’s kennel, including flying 25.03 and 30.62 wins at Ipswich. However, on the other

hand, Spring News is yet to win in three starts here.

Byers is impressed with the chasing ability of Ability To Speed.

“He’d go through a brick wall if he had to,” he said. Curry too hot THOSE ‘in the know’ should have backed Give ’Em Curry to win a heat of the 520 metres Christmas Stocking at Albion Park last Thursday night.

He was giving off all the right signals.

Give ’Em Curry (Bit Chili - Nightmare Lil) landed a heat in 30.43.

He led through the first sec-tion, was headed by favour-ite Seldom Said into the back straight, but wore him down on the line to win by three quarters of a length, with two and a quarter lengths to Mini Pod third.

Give ’Em Curry has been in Des Gilroy’s kennel for the past five weeks.

“I was looking for dogs and mentioned it to Alex Green,” said Des.

“He then mentioned that to Anne Southee, and she sent me this dog and his brother, Explosive Dreams.”

Des said that the country ken-nel environment with plenty of things for the dog to see had turned him around.

“I’ve given him a few runs at Grafton and Casino since I got him and he’s been going well, but I don’t think that Casino really suits him,” said Des.

“When he drew the wide box I thought he was in with a chance.”

Give ’Em Curry only had to jump cleanly to be in the race.

“I knew he would (win) be-cause everyone who has had him in the past says if he is barking when he is behind the boxes, he will begin (well) for certain,” said Des.

“That’s what he did.” Give ’Em Curry has now won

nine races in 75 starts but been placed 23 times.

RAWSON REASON showed that age shall not weary them when the Tania Foster trained chaser took out the Veterans Mixed 4th/5th Grade feature final at Angle Park last Thursday night. After a Best Of Night 29.97 heat win a week earlier, Rawson Reason was all the rage in betting, sent to box four as a pronounced $1.75 favorite. Wearing the blue vest, Rawson Reason began safely and mustered speed to take the early lead over Burning Daylight through the first turn. Leading Burning Daylight by two lengths along the back straight, Raw-son Reason slipped into overdrive and had doubled his advantage by the top turn. Rounding the final bend still three lengths clear of Burning Daylight, Rawson Reason proved far too good. The son of Kiowa Sweet Trey and Ravada Reason crossed the line two and a quarter lengths clear of Burning Daylight in 30.04, with Airbag making late ground in third place. A lightly raced 4½ year-old, due to injury, Rawson Reason took his record to 22 wins and 20 placings from 61 career starts.

GOOSEBUMPS gave trainer, Matthew Payne an early Christmas present at Angle Park last Thursday night when she won the fundrais-ing@chasers Queens Free For All. Poorly drawn in the six but still starting the $3.00 popular elect, Goosebumps jumped safely and showed very good field sense to slot into third place through the first turn behind early leader, Miss Stack-house. Railing through to second and challenging Miss Stackhouse down the back straight, Goosebumps made her move as she pushed through to be a clear leader at the top turn. Working clear of Pea Shooter through the final bend, Goosebumps finished the race off well. The daughter of Meticulous and Tilka Lee crossed the line two and a half lengths ahead of Pea Shooter in 29.79, with La Regina making good ground for third. A prolific winner and an all-distance performer, Goosebumps took her record to 23 wins and 10 placings from 45 career starts. Sprinting away ANGLE PARK’S 388 metres boxes have been installed and were used for the first time last Wednesday when stewards organized some train-ers to trial over the journey. With public trials starting last Saturday, the aim is to start racing over the new distance from January 4. Racing over the 388 metres will only occur at Angle Park day meet-ings.

Skating on thin ice THE DAYS of racing at Port Augusta could be numbered after the last two meetings scheduled at the track were cancelled due to a lack of nomina-tions. The only non-TAB track to sur-vive a recent overhaul of country tracks in SA, Port Augusta was given approval to keep racing by the GRSA, with one of the conditions being that they continue to attract viable number to run meetings. The next meeting on the track is scheduled for January 15, with the club looking to increase prizemoney in an effort to attract more nomina-tions. What a classic TWO HEATS of the Gawler Classic were run at the track last Tuesday, with the first four runners past the post making their way through to the final. Group 3 Brian Johnstone Memo-rial winner, Basilika maintained her good form for trainer, Bosco Sta-menkovic when she took out the opening round. A $1.70 elect donning the check singlet, Basilika settled down third

early then stormed home over the closing stages to edge out Victa Tina in 31.45, with Lift Go Flash and Emer-ley Choice finishing third and fourth respectively. Victa Troy racked-up another strong win for trainer, Ron Schadow when successful in heat two. Starting the $1.50 favourite from box four, Victa Troy jumped straight to the lead and controlled proceed-ings throughout, passing the post nearly five lengths ahead of Emerley Max and Emerley Style in Best Of Day 30.79, while Bueller finished fourth. Big heart CRAZY HEART broke through for her first win over 600 metres when the Bruce Lellmann trained chaser took out the grsa.com.au Mixed 4th/5th Grade at Angle Park last Thursday night. Starting well in the market at $3.00 from box six, Crazy Heart came our running and skipped clear early, leading by five lengths over Cascada Star with a lap to run. Passing the catching pen still holding a five lengths break, Crazy Heart lost ground in the back straight, with Stove Rocks moving into second place and closing to be within three lengths at the top turn. Under pressure through the final bend and overtaken by Stove Rocks in the home straight, the early pace-setter raised another effort and kicked back strongly to regain the lead in the shadows of the post. The daughter of Black Enforcer and Bar Crusher got home by a head to Stove Rocks in 35.24, with Cas-cada Star holding down third place.

BUCKARINGA LAD proved too lively for his rivals when he took out the mcqueenstavern.com.au Free For All for trainer, Narvette Treloar. Drawn out wide in box seven and starting as a $9.00 chance behind race favourite, Point Two Over ($2.10), Buckaringa Lad made his own luck early, as hre’d jumped fast then crossed the field to hold the early lead over Full Embargo through the first turn. Showing the way by three lengths down the back straight, Buckaringa Lad was making every post a winner and held a four lengths break over Evacuation at the top turn. Rounding the final bend still well clear of Evacuation, Buckaringa Lad coasted to the line in no danger of defeat. The son of Brumby Lad and Ka-nowna Belle scored by three and three quarter lengths over Evacuation in a new personal best 30.00, while Tripping Cowboy wound up third.

RAY WEBSTER has always known that Cousin Callum could run fast times.

But the son of Hallucinate often finds his share of trouble in races, so winning doesn’t come easy.

However, the 30kg chaser has struck a purple patch of form that’s produced fast wins recently. Just on a month ago, Cousin Callum created a new track record at Dapto over 600 metres and then again last Friday night at Wentworth Park he scored his fourth win in town, with the race time also zippy, breaking the 30-seconds mark. Competing in the 520 metres Globe Memorial Stake, Cousin Callum drew the rails box and a little

luck was always going to see him in the picture, as he is hard to hold out at the end of a sprint journey.

At boxrise the speedy Red Halo jumped best from box four, with Myron’s Angel coming over from box eight, while Cousin Callum was only moderately away but kept to the fence waiting for some luck to occur on the first corner.

The luck went his way as they fanned leaving the straight and Cousin Callum rolled straight into second spot, with Red Halo travelling well in the lead. Off the back Red Halo was tick-ing over good sections, and that helped Cousin Callum warm to his task as they approached the home corner. In the straight, and despite Red Halo giving it her best shot, she was unable to withstand the finishing burst of Cousin Callum.

He grabbed the ascendency in the shadows of the post and won by a half length in 29.94, with Jack’s Pocket filling third spot, a further two lengths back.

Cousin Callum (x Gondola Sere-nade) has now had 40 career starts resulting in 10 wins and 17 placings. Tony Messina trains Red Halo (Carnage x Blitzin’ Bianca), who to date has had 39 outings for eight wins and nine placings, whilst the Ruth King prepared Jack’s Pocket (Hallucinate x Charm Forever) from 41 career starts has notched eight wins and 15 placings.

TANYA NEUWENOYK’S win-ning streak continued when Wild Ride led most of the way to land the Macro Meats Stake over 520 metres.

From the inside draw, Wild Ride jumped nicely and drove hard along the fence to hold out Tanarama Glamma and Your Special in the run

to the first turn. Continuing to roll forward, Wild Ride found the front and led into the back, with Tana-rama Glamma slot-ting in second spot. The leader kept all rivals at bay in the run to the home corner, with Cool Sla t t s makinga surge from well back. But Wild Ride kept finding plenty and in the end de-feated Cool Slatts by a length in 30.21, wi th Tanarama Glamma back third, a further one and three quarter lengths away. Wild Ride, by

Where’s Pedro out of Dixie Town, to date has had 12 starts for six wins with two placings.

Cool Slatts (Big Daddy Cool x Westend Kaitlyn) for trainer, John Cameron, has had 38 career starts that have yielded six wins and 13 plac-ings, whilst Tanarama Glamma (Big Daddy Cool x Scar Crash), prepared by Adam Wade, after 19 career starts has produced seven wins and seven placings. MARK AZZOPARDI was glow-ing about Pure Instinct when the light fawn chaser first came into is kennels. And he was again delighted when the 34kg chaser proved too strong in the 520 metres Pages Event Equipment Stake. After a moderate start from box five, Pure Instinct worked into second spot to be behind the front running Hazy Charm at the first corner.

Heading to the back Hazy Charm still led, however, Pure Instinct quickly moved up to issue his chal-lenge and by the top bend had as-serted his superiority. Racing clear, Pure Instinct headed for the judge with it all parcelled-up, increasing the margin to a five and a quarter lengths over Hazy Charm in 30.02, with third placed Spring Ex-treme a further two and a quarter lengths away third. Pure Instinct, by Bombastic Shi-raz from Weetbix, has produced 10 wins and nine placings from 26 career starts.

Hazy Charm (Collision x Hazy Luck), trained by Yvonne Harris, has had 32 career starts for four wins and 16 placings, whilst the Greg Board trained Spring Extreme (Collision x Spring Belle) has had 24 career starts for six wins and 10 placings.

On the dais following the running of the Bob Brown Memorial are (L-R) Terry Penny, Bob Brown Jnr, Betty Penny and Ross Brown, the late Bob Brown’s oldest son. And of course the winner of the event, Penny’s Angel, who recorded 26.17 for the 461 metres event In Hobart last Thursday night.

ROWELLA trainer, Terry Penny celebrated with a feature race dou-ble at Tattersall’s Park, Hobart last Thursday night.

But he would have traded both for success in the Group 1 Ace-land Hobart Thousand. Tasmanian Oaks winning bitch, Miss Roman Nose produced a powerful finish to take out the Maurie Nicod Memorial over 461 metres, whilst her litter brother, Penny’s Angel scored arguably his best win of the season in the Hobart Thousand Consolation, also known as the Bob Brown Memorial. Penny had the litter sister, Clyde’s Angel in the Group 1 Hobart Thousand final but she was never out of trouble and never a winning chance. Penny’s Angel was brave in wining the Bob Brown. He showed blistering early speed to lead from box two and held sway by two lengths at the top turn.

But Lucky Norris was hot on his hammer and looked set to join the leader as they straightened for the run to the line. But that’s when Penny’s An-gel turned up the heat and ex-tended his lead, leaving Lucky Norris to do little but stay in touch over the final stages.

“At one stage I thought the dog on his outside was going to give him some bother but my dog stuck to his guns and fought it off, and he really delivered over the last bit of the race,” Penny said. ‘This dog used to tire a lot in the last bit of his races but he’s getting stronger and more mature in the way he goes about racing these days.” “He’s finding the line strong and that’s great to see,” he said. MISS ROMAN NOSE started from box eight, and it was an ideal draw for the bitch that was having her second run back in the state after a moderate interstate cam-paign in the care of Victorian trainer, Kel Greenough. Miss Roman Nose began well and stayed wide to the top turn, while Centennial Bark flew the lids from box four and led com-fortably to the home turn. Centennial Bark, prepared by Graeme Moate, looked set to score but he started to feel the pinch

nearing the line and Miss Roman Nose kept coming.

She hit the line a length clear of Centennial Bark, with Mojito finishing a close third. ‘I thought this was one of the bitch’s best wins because Centen-nial Bark is very hard to run down when he’s on the bunny,” Penny said. “This bitch doesn’t pull any punches, and tonight she was re-lentless.” “I thought she came up a lot better than last week and she raced accordingly,” he said. Miss Roman Nose performed admirably during her interstate trip and stripped a lot fitter for having missed a place in a Hobart Thousand heat a week earlier. The bitch chased hard in the home straight and delivered al-most a replica performance that won her the Tasmanian Oaks. Penny said he was unsure whether he will send Miss Roman Nose and Clyde’s Angel back to Victoria. “I was asked recently whether the two bitches were going back to Victoria, and whether I would be considering sending their little brother (Penny's Angel) as well.” “I’ll have a good think about it because the dogs did well while they were away last time,” he said.

Back home after a Victorian campaign, Miss Roman Nose wins the Maurie Nicod Memorial in Hobart, running the 461 metres trip in 26.31. A heady chaser, she defeated Centennial Bark (4) and Mojito, securing her 14th career win for Rowella based Terry Penny.

HESTON BALE gave ’em a caning in a Silver Chief heat, as after ex-ploding to the front, he went on to re-write the record books at The Mead-ows last Saturday night. All the rage at $1.40 from the three trap, Heston Bale went past Gordon Bale, who’d run 5.05 early, and increased the tempo down the back to be three lengths clear in 17.74 at the next checkpoint. Far too good from thereon, the Paul Wheeler owned son of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale sizzled over the concluding stages, stretching his advantage to 12¾ lengths and regis-tering a new track record run of 29.45 for the 525 metres trip. Gordon Bale, although beaten on his merits, still ran a good race for second, while Kiltanon Skye worked home nicely into third place, a further six lengths astern.

At one stage, Heston Bale also held the track record at Sandown Park, clocking 29.14 on November 4. Prepared at Anakie by ‘Team Dailly’, Heston Bale has contested a dozen races, winning eight times, whilst he kept his form around the Broadmeadows layout intact at two from two, HUTMAKER, a greyhound that Rob Britton intended to take to Ire-land for a tilt at their Derby, was far too strong for his rivals in the third heat of the ‘black type’ series. But he wasn’t favourite, with that honour belonging to Eurico Bale. Eurico Bale showed great early pace to post 5.03 but then went wide on the corner, allowing a saloon passage run for Hutmaker. A dour type, Hutmaker took over and recorded 17.86 before going on

to score in a new PB 29.96. In the run, Chris Bale was near enough if good enough but went un-der by four and three quarter lengths, while Eurico Bale held down third spot, a lengths further away. It was Hutmaker’s ninth win from 29 attempts, whilst on the track he’s won three of his 10 starts. CAPE HAWKE turned it on last weekend when he took out a Group 1 Silver Chief heat in 29.73. From the eight gate, Cape Hawke

blistered across the face of the field but still had McCosker Speed nar-rowly ahead when the timer showed 5.02 a lap out. With a wing on each paw, the pink vested runner charged to the front and had established a com-manding six lengths break in 17.62 coming off the back. Off and gone with the prize, the Jamie Ennis trained chaser cruised to a 10¼ lengths victory over Drum-mond Bale, who worked home nicely, with McCosker Speed next past the post. A son of Where’s Pedro and Viva Odessa, Cape Hawke was a $1.30 hot pop when snaring his fourth win from five attempts at The Meadows, whilst overall the Terry Wales owned racer has scored a dozen times from 20 raceday appearances. RECENT Brisbane Cup winner, Glen Gallon didn’t mess around when discovering how to race at the northern suburbs raceway, seeing that the Queensland’s major feature event was run the week prior.

Backed for stacks into $1.80,

despite reports of a slowish trial, the Tony Brett trained chaser had the measure of his rivals at boxrise.

From the three, Glen Gallon pinged the lids and showed the way to the first turn in 5.14 to be ahead of Sleep Walk and Why Not James.

The red brindle dog possesses a strong middle phase in his races and opened up along the back to record 17.72, with Hackel Bale now his nearest challenger, albeit more than six lengths adrift.

Raced by the Velocity Lodge Partners Syndicate, the son of Flying Stanley and Incoherent has a big mo-tor, so coasted home an impressive 11¾ lengths winner over Sleep Walk, while third placed Hackel Bale was a neck away.

At his debut run over The Mead-ows 525 metres journey, Glen Gallon recorded 29.69 to rack-up his 11th win from 21 starts.

OTHER good heat winners were Mepunga Geordie, who drew first blood, kick-starting the AJS Corpora-tion Silver Chief series for Barry Smith and Jeff Britton, clocking 30.39, whilst Soda Boy fizzed around the sprint course in a new PB 30.10 for Peter Giles.

Whispering Wind registered a 30.23 gallop to complete a double for Jeff Britton, while the Wayne Vas-sallo trained Exclusivity went 30.10 and Lead Singer gave Cameron Ba-hen a semi-finalist when he stopped the timer at 30.02.

Also landing a double was 'Team Dailly' when Cronos Bale traversed the trip in 30.16, while the final heat winner, Vee Ate Mate went 30.18 for Engin Gemci.

This week’s semi-finals will be worthy of the trip to Northcorp Boulevard, with 32 of the brightest youngsters vying for a spot in the prestigious final.

With 16 runners in this year’s Silver Chief heats, top sire and Triple Crown champ, Bombastic Shiraz managed to get seven of his progeny through to Saturday night’s next round of the famed series. During his racing days for the Cairns family of Ballarat, the son of Black Shiraz and Bombastic Blonde really enjoyed racing at the Broad-meadows layout.

Whether he’s passed that quality on to his offspring will be discovered in the ‘black type’ final at the MGRA’s Sunday, January 1 night meeting. - Allan Hawkswell

Soda Boy and handler, Anne Lawson with the promising Daniel Mizzi owned, Peter Giles trained sprinter, who notched his seventh win in a row. Blessed with early pace, the Bombastic Shiraz and Pure Elle chaser also remains undefeated in three outings over the Northcorp Boulevard circuit.

He’s the man: Vee Ate Mate was purring at The Meadows after recording an all the way win in 30.18. Raced and trained by Engin Gemci at Pearcedale, the son of Talk’s Cheap and Lil’ Bit Cool was congratulated by a happy cheer squad, who enjoyed the $10 odds on offer.

Irishman, Tommy O’Donovan and Hutmaker, who appreciated a decent drop in class and also racing against his own age group.

Jamie Ennis and the brilliant Cape Hawke after the black sprinter clocked 29.73 in his runaway 10 lengths Silver Chief heat win on the weekend.

Kiwi visitor, James Shaw and Whispering Wind after the Champagne Syndicate owned youngster scored a strong win for trainer, Angela Langton in 30.23

“Murray” Christmas made a welcome appearance at The Meadows last Saturday night.

Group 1 Brisbane Cup winner, Glen Gallon and trainer, Tony Brett after the son of Flying Stanley (USA) and Incoherent scored a near 12 lengths first-up win at The Meadows in 29.69.

The beautifully bred Exclusivity, a black son of Brett Lee and Wave To Tammy, followed on from his two consecutive wins at Sandown Park this month with an impressive 30.10 victory at his Meadows debut. Trained by Wayne Vassallo at Devon Meadows, the youngster was handled by WA visitor, Kylie McLennan.

Tommy Dailly and The Meadows new 525 metres track record holder, Heston Bale after his sizzling 29.45 success. The Dailly kennel also p ro duced an o ther p romis in g youngster, Cronos Bale, a son of Bombastic Shiraz and wonderful producer, Gold Rush Bale, who recorded 30.16 in his respective heat win of the Silver Chief series.

Mepunga Geordie, a litter brother to dual Group winner, Mepunga Nicky, who broke a stopper bone in a heat of the Laurels at Sandown Park last Thursday, carried the litter flag with an imposing win in the first heat of the Silver Chief series at The Meadows on Saturday evening.

That makes five on the trot for Lead Singer. The El Galo and Wedding Singer sprinter worked home hard to hit the line in 30.02 for the Bahen clan, owner Francis and trainer Cameron.

2011/2012 CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR

NOMINATIONS CLOSING SCHEDULE

THE MIGHTY Linda Britton kennel fired-up with four big winners on Sat-urday to clearly restate her team's pre-eminence at headquarters.

The Nambeelup based kennel has recorded 171 wins at Cannington (128 of those city graded races and 43 provincial) to give Britton a mas-sive 149½ points.

Top end of the leader board sees David Hobby second on 80, followed by Ben Abercrombie and Paul Stuart (55), with Andrew McLaren and John Iwanyk on 43. Veteran chaser, Banzai Pipeline kicked off the good night for WA's premier kennel with a solid three lengths win in 30.77.

An April 2007 son of Surf Lorian and Crossword Lizzy, the last start winner at Mandurah was risked by punters at $8.50, with the betting dominated by kennelmate, Uno Reltub and Bill McNally’s Ocean Deep. A moderate jump had Banzai Pipeline with the field in his sights approaching the first turn, which saw the two leading fancies skittled out of contention.

The strong railer got a saloon passage run and leaving the pen he headed the front runner, Best Behav-iour. Leaving the back in 19.23, Banzai Pipeline was two lengths clear of Best Behaviour who, while being no slouch in the run-home, was never a winning chance.

It was the 22nd career win from 97 starts for the veteran, who has earned over $70,000 for connections. BRITTON made it a race to race double with Not In Kansas ($6.00) saluting in a Free To All, which resem-bled a ‘Demolition Derby’ on the first turn.

An even first section saw five across the track, with the favourite, Vocal Enforcer on the rail and Not In Kansas alongside him. Something had to give heading into the turn and Vocal Enforcer took the brunt of the pain when buffetted from pillar to post.

The Cannington Track Star fin-ished fourth, but recorded this infor-mation in the stewards sectional re-view, Q3xcxcstxcxcxcxc65c5.

Meanwhile Not In Kansas found the rail, and after being turned and subsequently jumped by Kid Cudi, pushed through to lead Oliver Allen along the back. After clocking a sizzling 5.34 sec-tion, the daughter of Knocka Norris had burst clear by five lengths into the final turn.

She tired in the run home, and in a torrid affair, held veteran, Oliver

Allen at bay by a half length in 30.71. IT WAS PLEASING to see RWWA program a Juvenile series on Saturday night, with both heats being taken out by Linda Britton.

The Tony Forte owned Beau One ($1.80) drew the cherry and led Mid-night Request throughout, winning by two lengths in a handy 30.76.

The daughter of Collision and Casey's Angel brought up her seventh career win on the back of some solid placings that included a close second to the in-form Notto Monelli. Li ttermate, Flying Machine brought up the final leg of the Britton quartet, overcoming the odds-on chance, Cantrill to record a length win in 30.79.

The $4.00 hope was on her Can-nington debut, having run a sizzling 27.72 at Mandurah at her WA debut on December 1.

The top four from each heat pro-gressed through to the $4,500 final on Christmas Eve.

Coin stays WA RACING is now seeing a greater number of heat and final races, giving participants a greater opportunity to get a return in a market that many owners are paying well above value for eastern state chasers.

At Mandurah, heats and finals are now commonplace for Maiden and Grade 5 races, with an increase in provincial and city Grade 5 series occurring at the city venue also. Hopefully this focus on bettering opportunities for industry participants continues and we see more innova-tion in 2012.

Who knows, we might even see races for bitches or veteran chasers?

Santa might also bring a review of the provincial grading system, maybe three Grade 5 and two Grade 4 races could be won before the 400 metres dogs rapidly fly through to top class.

The list of wants varies from per-son to person, but foremost amongst them is the opportunity to race and not have well-honed athletes sitting at home on race night. THE FEATURE EVENT on the night was the $18,000 Christmas Gift over the staying distance.

In what could generously be de-scribed as a moderate field. rising 5 year-old Pickle Mickle was sent out the $2.60 favourite, despite the fact that he was returning from a one month injury break.

The veteran, a winner of 10 over the distance, had won more staying races than the rest of the field com-bined. The class runner of the race was the John Crossley trained Surf A Coin, who was the only other runner in sin-gle figures at $4.00.

Despite a good record over the 715 metres, this was his first try for nearly six months.

He was away fairly, hit the lead on the first bend and despite tiring badly in the run-home, held off Reef Rider in 42.34.

The $12K first prize took Surf A Coin to $94,000 in career earnings, the result of 18 wins and 28 placings from 62 starts. DAVID HOBBY'S Notto Monelli recorded a career best 30.37 to re-cord the best spring time of the night.

Miata demolished a middle dis-tance field to win by 10 lengths two lengths slower than the time standard she had set the previous week, whilst McQueen clocked 42.03 to easily eclipse the time run in the feature when taking out the Grade 4 staying event.

IN THE OPENING race, heat one of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres, four of the runners fell at the first turn.

At boxrise it was Gula Bale from the outside trap that won the start and led down to the first mark in 5.08.

Gula Bale then tried to slam to the fence, getting turned sideways in the process and dogs went everywhere, thus causing Brynne Bale, Fyna Bale, Lucy’s Rose and Scarlet Maid all to fall.

With only four left in contention, it was Gula Bale in charge by four lengths over By Starlight at the second marker in 19.37, with eight lengths to Leprechaun Betty and a further break to Here’s Kath.

Gula Bale ($12.60) kept going to the line, scoring by two and a quarter lengths over By Starlight ($5.20), with Lepre-chaun Betty ($21.90) a length back in third spot.

Gula Bale recorded 30.44 to tick-up her first win in two tries at the trip, and that took her record to 12 wins in 32 starts overall.

The white and black chaser, a daughter of Give Me Five and Jasmine Bale, is trained by Steve Collins, and she was the first leg of a winning double for owner, Paul Wheeler.

The Mark Delbridge trained Elmira Bale gave Paul his double by running 29.70 to take out heat three of the Macro Meats Laurels Classic over 515 metres. Dyna’s again DYNA KATE led all the way to score in the facebook.com/sandowndogs mixed 4th/5th Grade over 595 metres, clocking a new PB 34.54.

Coming from box four as the popular elect at $2.60, the daughter of Collision and Gold Rush Bale was out first and had no trouble in leading them to the post the first time in 9.22, with two lengths to Coolan Miss and nearly three lengths to Limburg Gem.

Despite being taken on, it was Dyna Kate still in control at the back turn in 23.46, with Coolan Miss right on her ham-mer, and they had quite a few lengths on

Limburg Gem and the rest were not in the hunt.

Dyna Kate refused to cede over the final stages and made it past the post a length and a quarter ahead of Coolan Miss ($3.40), with Limburg Gem ($39.20) three and a quarter lengths further afield.

Dyna Kate, who has won three of four at the trip, and 13 of 40 overall, is trained by Graeme Bate and was the first leg of a litter double for owner, Brendan Wheeler.

The Andrea Dailly trained Dyna Steal

completed Brendan’s litter double by registering Best Of Night 29.48 to score in the www.rapidvite.com Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 515 metres.

Another member of that litter, Dyna Tron took out the Group 1 Hobart Thou-sand at Tattersall’s Park later in the night. Hard work for specialist TRACK SPECIALIST, Zippstar had to work very hard to score in the Sandown website Free For All over 515 metres. Lining up in box two as favourite at $4.30, the Neville King trained chaser came out running and led down to the first peg in 5.04, with Black Saharrah second, narrowly ahead of Allen Elroy and Strong Intention. Black Saharrah railed through to take over and led them around to the back corner in 18.91, with Zippstar working overtime on her outside to be second, while Allen Elroy did it even tougher out three-wide and Carol Allen was on the fence behind them looking for a run.

Zippstar worked very hard to regain the lead coming to the final turn but in the end he made it to the Judge with a length and a quarter to spare over Black Sahar-rah ($7.00) and Carol Allen ($10.40) picked up third money, a half length back.

Zippstar is a son of Return The King and Sanzzero, owned by the Pizazz Park Syndicate, with the red fawn galloper

returning 29.60 to bring up his eighth win in 15 runs on the track when taking his overall tally to 21 wins in 43 attempts. Long trip worthwhile STETSON DONNA made the long trip from Finley worthwhile by finishing best to land heat seven of the Macro Meats Lau-rels Classic over 515 metres.

Sent to box three at $6.20, the daughter of Premier Style and Silent Flower was out smartly and was a neck second at the first mark, where Ruby Jet led in 5.08, with Cee Anna Rose on the fence third.

After being headed by Cee Anna Rose through the first bend, Ruby Jet regained the lead and sped around to the back turn in 18.98 with a length lead and another length to Stetson Donna sitting third.

Stetson Donna put it into top gear on straightening and drove between the leaders half way down the running to find the front and got home by a length and a quarter over Cee Anna Rose ($2.40 fav), with a half length to third placed Ruby Jet ($4.80).

Stetson Donna, owned and trained by Peter Dundon, recorded 29.78 to bring up her first win in five tries at the trip.

The black chaser made it four wins, on the trot with six seconds from all 12 starts to date.

Year 10 student, Zac Gemci and dad, Engin produced the lightly raced Leelicious, who made it three wins on the trot at Sandown Park when she took out a heat in 29.61.

Card shark, Peter Riley handled the Robert Britton trained Chilly Babe in her strong 29.96 heat win.

She Ain’t Late showed plenty of early speed when she led all the way to record 29.74 in claiming the fourth heat of the Macro Meats sponsored Laurels series. Raced by Maureen Barry, the brindle daughter of Irish chaser, Late Late Show and Little Bit Shy is trained at Darnum by Trevor Allen. Pictured is Maureen and her two grand children, Kieran and Catherine, plus trainer, Trevor Allen.

Heather Collins handled Gula Bale, who landed the first heat of the Macro Meats Laurels series in a rough-house 30.44 in which four rivals fell on the first corner.

GOTBA President, Geoff Collins and Ros Hume were excited with the prospects of Zara Zulu, who came out running and posted an all the way heat win in 29.85, A daughter of Mogambo (who stands at Geoff’s World Class Sires property at Bunyip) and Zulu Zepha, the lightly raced sprinter was making her debut over the 515 metres trip.

The nine hour return trip from Finley to Melbourne doesn’t deter Peter Dundon. His promising Stetson Donna continued her fine form and made it four city wins on the trot when she broke through for her first win at Sandown Park in the seventh heat of the Macro Meats Laurels series. The black daughter of Premier Style and the beautifully bred Silent Flower stormed home in an eye-catching win in 29.78.

Elmira Bale had been beaten at her past four outings over the Sandown Park 515 metres trip but relished the opportunity to compete against her own sex and was an all the way Laurels heat winner in 29.70. Trained by Mark Delbridge for Paul Wheeler, the daughter of hot sire, Bartrim Bale and Serene Bale has now won a dozen races.

Ray Bartolo trains the beautifully bred Katie Merry (Go Wild Teddy - Miss Mini Mouse) for his mum, Diane. Showing good box manners, the black bitch led soon after boxrise and posted a slick new 29.56 PB.

WALLY LUTIGER had the Christ-mas Gift at Wentworth Park on his mind when he arrived at the Dapto track last Wednesday night.

However, the veteran mentor went home with a night to remember after landing a double and snaring the quinella in the feature race. The first time he sampled success was in the 520 metres Affiliated FM Insurance Trophy final when How About Gorby scored at huge odds and defeated kennelmate, Fancy Kayla. When the lids opened the early speed came from box seven, with How About Gorby hitting top gear straight away to lead the inside drawn Yeah Buddy and Rybenbrook Britt on settling down.

It was How About Gorby that headed to the back with a nice lead,

while working into a forward posi-tion was Fancy Kayla, who had raced past Yeah Buddy and Rybendbrook Britt. That order was the same on the home corner, with the leader still going strongly.

Heading for the judge it was How About Gorby that was too good, scor-ing by three and half lengths over Fancy Kayla in 30.11, while Ryben-brook Britt was a further two and a quarter lengths away third. By Over Flo out of Susan Hotz, to date How About Gorby has had 36 career starts for four wins and 14 placings.

Fancy Kayla (Hallucinate x Cheeky Bonnie) from 51 career starts has won four times with 10 placings, whilst the Andy Lord prepared Ry-benbrook Britt (Bombastic Shiraz x Flick The Switch) has had 19 career starts for six wins and 11 placings.

IN THE very next race, Queen Thunder made it a training double for Wally by leading throughout in a Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 297 metres, scoring a solid victory over Ritza Franky, who had been racing in great form. Boxrise saw Queen Thunder step best from box five and then crossed to the inside and led Miss Horizon, Premier Jackie and rails runner, Ritza

Franky, who was working along the fence. Down the side Queen Thunder was travelling well until Ritza Franky loomed up and looked to be a huge threat when heads were turned for home. In the straight Queen Thunder kept finding plenty and when the judge called a halt there was a one length gap to Ritza Franky in 17.14, with Jaydan Dawn a further three quarters of a length away third. Queen Thunder, by Bombastic Shiraz from Poetic Thunder, has raced on 55 occasions for eight wins and 31 placings.

Ritza Franky (Where's Pedro x Midnight Flare), prepared by Andy Lord, after just seven starts has re-corded four wins and two placings, whilst the Robert Jackson trained Jaydan Dawn (Collision x Dawn’s Memory) has had 73 career starts that reveal 12 wins and 17 placings.

MAKING IT BACK to back wins at the Dogdome was Pie Thief, who improved on the clock to score an all way victory in the Dapto Healthcare Stake over 520 metres. Pie Thief went to the start at each-way quote and supporters were happy when the lids rose, as the black chaser had begun nicely to lead the charge into the first corner. After sorting themselves out, Pie Thief was ahead of Western Isle, with Coolenda next in line.

The leader really stepped on the gas coming down the side, and while the immediate chasers couldn’t lift, it was cheers all round as Pie Thief turned for home in front with it all parcelled-up.

Pie Thief finished off the trip very strongly, being a dominant four and three quarter lengths winner over Western Isle, with Coolenda third, a further two and three quarter lengths away. After clocking 30.56 last week, the Barry Riccio trained chaser shaved that time to 30.28 on this oc-casion. Pie Thief, a daughter of Collision

and Ate Bucks, has saluted on three occasions as well as running three placings from eight starts.

Western Isle (Bit Chili x Cokie Royal), trained by John Little, has produced a win and four placings from 11 career starts, whilst the Wally Lutiger prepared Coolenda (Big Daddy Cool x Glenda’s Flash) has raced just five times for two wins and one placing.

SIMON RHODES has enjoyed a good year, preparing quite a few chasers for ‘Team Wheeler’, and the likeable mentor capped-off 2011 in fine fettle when Gail Allen annexed the 600 metres Winning Edge Kibble and Biscuit final at Dapto last Thurs-day night. The tiny 26kg daughter of Collision has stepped up to the middle distance caper with real gusto, and also has a strong affinity to the Dogdome, with this being her eight victory at the track. When the lids opened the inside trio were best to begin, with Elusive Ethics from box two just shading rails runner, Oh Em Gee and Gail Allen was splitting that pair.

As they settled into stride, Oh Em Gee took up the front runner’s role with Gail Allen parked right behind

and not letting the leader get too far away. Oh Em Gee kept rolling along in front down the back, with Gail Allen still staying in close proximity.

Approaching the home bend Gail Allen really warmed to her task and issued a challenge to Oh Em Gee, who was still finding plenty.

Half-way down the running Gail Allen moved up and headed Oh Em Gee, dashed past and went to the line a length winner over Rockabout, who ran on stoutly to take third prize, just three quarters of a length back. Gail Allen (x Olivia Allen), who clocked 34.78, has now had 34 starts overall for 14 wins and six placings.

Christine Proctor trained Oh Em Gee (Premier Fantasy x Dance To-ken) has raced 38 times for five wins and 16 placings, whilst Rockabout (Surf Lorian x Summer Bliss) has snared two wins and 12 placings from 17 career starts for trainer, Allan Bryant.

Andy Lord produced a smart winner via Ursula, who led through-out to easily account for her rivals in the Dapto Markets Stake over 520 metres. Exiting box six, Ursula bounced straight to the front and crossed the inside drawn Kid Callah in the run to the first turn.

They bunched leaving the straight, however, the leader was

travelling well into the back, and with the aid of slick early sections had opened a winning break. Ursula carted the field to the home turn and went powerfully to the post in recording a five and a half lengths victory over Kid Callah in a very smart 29.93, while Emilia Jade was one and a half lengths away third. Making it two wins over the trip, Ursula is by Premier Fantasy out of Uno Witch, and has now had 15 ca-reer starts for four wins and seven placings.

Kid Callah (Bit Chili x Quite A Stunner), trained by Jason Matthews, has had 28 career starts for four wins and 10 placings, whilst the Shaun Evans prepared Emilia Jade (Velocette x Paris St. Germain) has had nine starts to date for two wins and two placings.

The Dapto GRC always gets an abundance of middle distance nomi-nations, and the popular distance was utilised again in the Cousin Callum Stake, with victory going to the Neil Staines trained Bomb Disposal.

Hotly contested IN A RACE of many changes, No Repayments was the best to begin from box seven and led from Miss Montgomery, Hottie Dos and He’s Hotz Stuff, while Bomb Disposal from box four was midfield but an-gling for a run.

In the straight the first time they fanned, with Miss Montgomery working to the front at the lap mark, whilst Bomb Disposal was getting a nice run through into second spot. Heading to the back Miss Mont-gomery led, but Bomb Disposal had the leader’s measure, and off the back started to cut back the lead mar-

gin quite quickly. In the home straight Bomb Dis-posal drew clear of Miss Montgom-ery and went strongly to the post, recording a two lengths victory in 34.96, with He’s Hotz Stuff a half length away third. Bomb Disposal is by Big Daddy Cool from Bulletproof Girl and over-all has had 21 career starts for six

wins and five placings. Miss Montgomery (Bombastic

Shiraz x Micro Lee), prepared by Jimmy Micallef, has raced on 46 oc-casions producing 11 wins and 10 placings, whilst Larry Warren’s He’s Hotz Stuff (Surf Lorian x Susan Hotz) after 58 career starts has gath-ered seven wins and 15 placings.

GREYHOUNDS Australasia (GA) today confirmed the industry’s strong position regarding detection of prohibited substances, following compilation of member swab statistics. Production of GA member swab statistics confirmed that, over the last 5 financial years, the sport has on average taken about 12,000 swabs p.a. and of these swabs, only 0.7% were returned positive (i.e. 84). These results highlight the success of strong integrity measures with only 13 of the 84 positive swabs being of a category four, more serious in nature. With regard to specific details of the financial year 2010/11, GA advises: • GA members took 14,335 swabs,

up by some 2,465 from the previous year.

• Of the swabs taken, only 0.54% were returned positive (i.e. 78), a new low for this statistic.

• Of the 0.54% positive swabs, only 16 were of a category four, more serious in nature.

Jurisdictional Controlling Bodies are to be congratulated for their on-going commitment to control and detect substances of a prohibited nature in the sport of greyhound racing. Greyhounds Australasia Chief Executive Officer, Mr Craig Taberner said, “All sports face significant challenges in dealing with the use of performance enhancing drugs. Probity and detection of prohibited substances continues to be a major focus. This is assisted by GA’s continued investment into research and development.”

Meeting with Racing Minister/Advisor Tuesday 13/12/2011 The Save Wangara t t a Dogs Committee was greatly encouraged after our meeting with Patrick Clancy (Senior advisor to Denis Napthine, Minister for Racing). The Racing Minister is awaiting the outcome of the Aurecon “South Wangaratta Urban Renewal Plan” due out at the end of March 2012. A progress report has supported the current Avian Park site as the most suitable site for a new

greyhound track. The Wangaratta deputation was advised to keep their committee active and members fully advised of developments as they occur. In keeping with the above advice the S.W.D.C. will be actively seeking the opinions of trainers/owners who have been impacted by the wrongful closure of Wangaratta. A meeting will be held in late January to allow members to be fully updated. - Neville Burgan

Imported stars LEADING Sydney trainer, Andy Lord’s Satin Nell, one of his two new Irish imports, is an instant hit in Aus-tralia, winning by 11 lengths at her debut at Dapto on Wednesday.

The 26 month-old black bitch rocketed over 520 metres in a blister-ing 30.03.

Fane Funstress, who accompa-nied Satin Nell to Australia, is a fort-night off her debut, but Lord says, “She goes good too.”

********** FULL MARKS to GRNSW for lift-ing the ban on drops to control Pan-nus, a common eye condition.

In recent years, innocent trainers have been penalised after their dogs tested positive to a drug found in drops used to remedy the ailment.

Untreated Pannus produces a film over the eye, causing degrees of blindness.

Pannus prevention measures will be strictly controlled, but the move will permit greyhounds, previously retired, to continue racing.

Lobbying from Greyhound Social Club boss, Tom Green, now a GRNSW board member, instigated the exemption.

********** NO RULES LEAGUE’S victory in

the $75,000 Winnebago Puppy Clas-sic at Dapto will encourage owners with slow-developing greyhounds.

Puppies are usually broken-in to racing within six week,s but No Rules League was so timid that she took three months to be prepared for the track.

Chris Bertinato, who had bought No Rules League for just $800, per-severed, and with help from South Coast trainer, George Micallef, re-nowned for his patience, has been rewarded with a star.

********** APPIN TRAINER, Ken Wright, who qualified with Noble Pedro for the AAA Radiator Specialists Christmas Gift at Wentworth Park, got into the sport as payment for a debt.

In 1968 a fellow Vietnam veteran gave Wright an old greyhound, in-stead of repaying a $20 loan. Wright expected to on-sell the dog and make a profit but found no takers.

After ‘hiding’ the greyhound, Jacanta Lass in his army barracks at Victoria’s Balcombe, Wright was forced to race her, and she won twice

on the old Wangaratta course. “But she was a wild thing, and

after a race or trial would jump the fence and head off to the car park looking for my vehicle,” Wright re-called.

Despite that unorthodox introduc-tion, Wright has become a big race specialist trainer, winning a National Derby with Eiffella, a Vic Peters Classic with Alastic Rebel and the biggest of them all, the Golden Easter Egg with Edie Beauchamp.

********** WESTERN DISTRICTS breeder, Dennis Barnes, who sold 2010 Na-tional Sprint champion, Smooth Fancy, and Fancy Dean, who won his 15th Wenty Park race in last week’s Christmas Gift heats, produced an-other slick customer at Bathurst on Monday.

Unraced Sleek Fancy won a 450 metres performance trial in 25.99; figures good enough to win most top grade sprints.

And at Dapto on Wednesday, David Cox’s rookie Pearl’s Choice posted 16.99 in a 297 metres trial, smart enough to win anywhere.

********** PRETTY MALAIKA'S win at Lis-more on Tuesday was her 39th for Spring Grove owner trainer, Frank Hancock - a remarkable achievement.

EVERY DAY I conduct blood tests on greyhounds.

Many are normal, many carry low-grade infections but a significant percentage are anaemic.

Quite often I conduct tests from dogs in the same kennel and again I find a range of results.

Anaemia in the racing greyhound is a complicated phenomenon. In medicine, anaemia refers to an absolute lack of red blood cells.

Of course greyhounds in the true sense of the word are not anaemic.

A greyhound with a blood count of 50% would still have more red blood cells than 99% of the other breeds of dog on earth.

When we use the word “anaemia” we refer to sports anaemia, which is a deficit from the optimal 58 to 60%.

The blood count is a measure of the actual percentage of red cells within the total volume of blood.

Traditionally this was performed by spinning a small tube of blood at 10000 rpm for three minutes. The blood cells being heavier would congregate on the bottom of the tube and watery residue or plasma would rest on top.

Nowadays the counts are performed electronically, which not only gives information on the number of red cells, but also the size and shape of them and also the density of the chemical haemoglobin within them.

T h i s i s e x c e l l e n t e x t r a information, which can provide clues to disturbances in the blood count.

The red blood cel ls are manufactured and stored in the bone marrow and spleen. They have a lifespan of 28 days, so on average every 7 days a quarter of the red cell

population is filtered off, recycled and has to be replaced.

Certain vitamins are essential for red blood cell production, for example B12, folic acid and of course the essential element within the molecule haemoglobin is iron.

The basic tests we perform are a very good guide but are not able to provide us with all the information.

Haemoglobin is the molecule used by the body to carry oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body.

For example, a greyhound with a haemoglobin level of 20g/L, which is excellent, but it would mean very little if the greyhounds were suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, which would render a high percentage of the haemoglobin incapable of carrying oxygen.

The efficiency of the oxygen transport system, even at its most optimal, is around 30%.

The chemical compound myo-inositol trispyrophosphate, commonly known as ITPP, is claimed to allow the efficiency of this transport system to approach 60%, and this has been demonstrated in laboratory rats by a group of French researchers.

The fear for the racing industries is that it may already being trialled in performance athletes of the two and four-legged variety.

The breakdown products of the red blood cells ends up being transformed into bile, which nature

has conveniently utilised as a natural detergent to break down fats into readily absorbable pieces.

However, by virtue of the enormous numbers of red blood cells in the greyhound, excess bile production and utilisation is a common problem.

The b reak down of the haemoglobin protein also poses significant risks for the small filters of the kidneys, like most proteins that end in the bloodstream, they will coagulate in an acid environment, form a plaque on the filters and progressively damage the kidneys.

It is vital to protect your dog’s kidneys by alkalising supplements such as potassium citrate after a race.

The simple response of increasing iron and vitamin supplements in response to a low blood count is always worth doing.

Iron supplements should probably be given every second day as a routine to racing dogs and if the daily vitamin supplement does no good, it will certainly do no harm.

However, because a greyhound has the weekly task of replacing 25% of his red blood cells, stress or hormonal disorders, such as low thyroid function, can decrease his manufacturing capacity.

In addition many successful greyhounds have competed and won with blood counts on the low 50’s range.

Two or three low blood counts warrant a more detailed look at the health of the animal, and a full profile with a thyroid level is recommended.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 – Page 57NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

ANYONE care to try and stab the winner of the Australian Greyhound Of The Year for 2011.

In my humble opinion this will be the toughest year to find an outright favourite since the inception of the prestigious ac-colade that was inaugurated back in 2002 when Boomeroo won the title.

Since the famous fawn flyer’s stand-out year, Bombastic Shiraz, Whisky As-sassin, Pure Octane, Betty’s Angel, Flashing Floods, El Galo, Cindeen Shelby and El Grand Senor have been deserved winners of the title.

Has El Grand Senor done enough in the first half of the year to clinch back to back titles?

Well, not the first six months to be precise, the big black sprinter ran his last race back on July 29 when he won the Shepparton Cup.

That was his third Group win of the year, and although he only raced a dozen times this year, he suffered just one de-feat.

That statistic in itself is testimony to his ability, and without ruffling any feath-ers of previous winners, no other AGOTY winner could boast those type of figures for a complete racing year.

His only loss was at Sandown Park on June 30 when Radley Bale got the sit on Carolyn Jones’ champ and ran him down in the home straight in 29.40 on a fast surface.

Mind you, EGS was only a half length away and having his first official city out-ing for seven months.

His stellar year saw him win the War-ragul Cup, breaking the track record in his heat win.

He then registered track record runs in both heat and final of the Geelong Can-nonball series over 400 metres.

EGS showed his dominance at Bal-larat when he accounted for Radley Bale in the Young Stars Classic then was un-troubled in the heat and final of the Traral-gon Cup.

His swansong was the Shepparton Cup in which he produced all the way wins in both heat and final, then was re-warded for the country cups double with a special GRV $50,000 bonus.

Now, looking for some classy oppo-sition that might challenge his claim for consecutive awards, first up to the plate with be Dyna Tron, who has returned an extraordinary scorecard over the past two months.

A Geelong Cup, Melbourne Cup and then a thrilling last stride victory in the Hobart Thousand elevates his chances considerably.

Over the past 56 years, only three greyhounds have managed to complete a Melbourne Cup/Hobart Thousand double, Rookie Rebel in 1957/1958, Black Aztec in 1980 and 1981, and now Dyna Tron in 2011.

That is an amazing feat, and to be linked with those former superstars greatly enhances his chances to grab both his home state Victorian Greyhound Of The Year title and the AGOTY award.

Now a look at some other worthy candidates that are sure to come under consideration.

The following elite performances of some of the dual Group winners this year may influence the voting panel.

I’ll be impartial and list the likely con-tenders in alphabetical order.

Allen Harper’s two Group 1 wins were the Rapidvite Peter Mosman Classic at Wentworth Park and the invitational TOPGUN at The Meadows.

Blue Lorian won six Group races during his wonderful career, two of those ‘black type’ victories were in early 2011, the Sky Racing Galaxy at Cannington and the Macro Meats Zoom Top at The Mead-ows.

Bobby Boucheau’s best racing was done in the first six months of the year.

He was the dominant stayer in Aus-tralia, as apart from record breaking runs over Sandown Park’s 595 and 715 metres trips, he landed the Macro Meats Super Stayers series at The Meadows, Radio Sport National sponsored Sandown Cup and the Macro Meats Gold Cup at Albion Park in Brisbane.

Quite an impressive scorecard, but his chances diminished with a forgetful second half of the year.

Queensland’s Bogie King was claimed the best young talent in the coun-try after success in Derbys at The Gar-dens and Albion Park.

A fearless chaser who lacked early pace, he won 13 races in three states.

Dashing Corsair will win plenty of votes, purely for his longevity at the high-est level and his gut-wrenching and emo-tional farewell victory in the National Dis-tance final at Albion Park on August 25.

One of the most honest, versatile and hardest chasers this country has seen in the past two or three decades, Dashing Corsair just loved the competition.

He chased his heart out every time he set foot on the track, and although he saved his best for his home crowds in Brisbane, punters throughout the country acknowledged him as a definite cham-pion.

He flopped on many trips to Mel-bourne, but whenever he raced over the 500, 600 or longer staying distances, Dashing Corsair was a formidable oppo-nent in any field.

He won 38 races at Albion Park, including track record runs of 41.48 and 41.44 in 2010.

A centurion with 126 appearances to his credit, he won a staggering 57 races and was placed a further 32 times.

What a record, not forgetting his $463K in stake earnings, placing him in seventh position on the list of the Top 10 Stake Earners in Australian Greyhound Racing history.

Dashing Corsair’s Group wins this year were all on his home turf.

The Big Dog Group 3 over the 600 metres trip, the Group 3 Superstayers over the 710 metres journey and his ulti-mate crowning glory, the emotional swan-song victory in the 2011 National Dis-tance Championship will enhance his claims of giving the banana-benders their first AGOTY trophy.

Dyna Tron burst onto the scene late in the year but didn’t he make an impact.

He captured the Group 2 Veolia Envi-romental Services Geelong Cup on his home soil in early November then pro-duced one of the runs of the year to lead all the way in the Group 1 Solo Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park a fortnight later.

He then made a valiant attempt to emulate his Melbourne Cup win by lead-ing until the shadows of the post at Albion Park in the Group 1 Brisbane Cup.

Local chaser, the USA sired Glen Gallon caught him on the line and denied him the chance to win three Group races on the trot.

Then to catch local chaser, Rewind in one of the most thrilling finishes seen on the Group racing circuit this year, he pocketed the $75,000 to the winner Group 1 Hobart Thousand on December 15.

Had Dyna Tron been successful in Brisbane, he would have virtually stitched up this award but still comes right into calculations to grab the prestigious title.

He had a wonderful year of racing, in particular the last half of the year, winning over 50% of his 2011 42 starts and could possibly pinch an 11th hour victory.

Enry Walt is another hardened cam-paigner who retired after this year’s Mel-bourne Cup assault when he took on the might of the massive Wheeler kennel.

A Sandown Park specialist who won 10 races over the 515 metres trip during his racing career, Enry Walt snared two country cups this year.

He stormed home to land the Hor-sham Cup in March and followed up at Bendigo in late April, overcoming a stack of trouble to score a well deserved vic-tory.

He Knows Uno is an outsider but deserves a mention because, like so many of this year’s candidates, is as honest as they come.

Unplaced only nine times from 42 starts so far, last year’s Brisbane Cup winner captured two Group 3 events, both at Brisbane’s headquarters, the Tattsbet Flying Amy and the Rover Mowers Gold Cup.

Another sentimental favourite will be High Earner, who shot to the top of the Top 10 Australian Greyhound Racing Stake Earners table when he took his prizemoney to a staggering $610K after an unsuccessful crack at the Group 1 Easter Egg.

He, like Dashing Corsair, won nearly 50% of his career starts (34/70) and de-spite a stop-start approach with retire-ment, managed to win the Group 1 Perth Cup and The Temlee at The Meadows from only a dozen starts this year.

Kilty Lad could not have had a better start to the 2011 season with success in the AJS Corporation Silver Chief Classic at The Meadows then followed up three weeks later with an Adelaide Cup victory.

Both races were classified Group 1 events, and the world was his oyster.

Sadly, as the year lengthened, so did his chances of claiming this award.

Despite making many feature race finals, he continually found trouble and eventually won nine races.

One of the finds of the year was the brilliant youngster, Mepunga Nicky.

Perhaps I’m being indulgent by in-cluding her amongst these super chasers, but her scintillating early speed saw her stamped as one of the real prospects of 2012.

She strung together eight wins on the trot in three states, including all the way wins in the SA and Warragul Oaks, the Adelaide Cup, defeating Easter Egg win-ner, Radley Bale and a game second behind Spring Gun in the Vic Peters at Wentworth Park.

Shimaguni had a wonderful year of racing.

Successful at her Sandown Park Maiden debut in early February, the Primo Uno bitch relished the step up to the staying ranks in March and proved that she was capable of holding her own at the elite level.

A Warragul track record run on March 22, the Jimmy Redenbach trained youngster went on to grab the City of Casey Victoria Cup at Cranbourne and then tackled the cream of our stayers and won the AWM Distance Title at The Meadows and the Tedesco Menswear Chairman’s Cup at Wentworth Park, both Group 3 listed races.

Sadly, injury sidelined her after her BON Wentworth Park victory on Septem-ber 10.

But she returned to the track to con-test the Sale Cup series and although successful in her heat, did earn the wrath of Stewards for turning her head in the home straight.

St. Pierre did the Apple Isle proud when the NSW owned but Tasmanian trained sprinter upstaged his more fan-cied rivals by winning the Australian Cup in March.

His other claim to fame was a home-town victory in the Group 3 Devonport Cup in mid January.

He only won seven races in 2011, but one that was the most important on the Australian greyhound racing calendar.

Tonneli Bale was the talk of the town up in the Top End as she returned a posi-tive after winning the Darwin Cup.

She was disqualified yet still stamped her authority on the sprint scene with two good wins interstate in sex-restricted clas-sics at Wentworth Park and Cannington.

She defeated kennelmate, Shereen Bale in both the NSW Ladies Bracelet and the WA Oaks, both recognized Group 2 events.

A classy array of greyhound talent no doubt, and those entrusted with making the right calls will probably cull the list to a manageable trio or quartet.

I’d be very surprised if I’ve missed any other genuine claimant, but if readers think I’ve overlooked any particular chaser during this year, please don’t hesi-tate to update me on any oversights.

However, I think if I box up Dyna Tron, EGS, Dashing Corsair and High Earner, I’ll be on the money.

As for an outright winner, I love fairy-tales, and Dashing Corsair proved the biggest story of the year.

The thrills and excitement he gave to myself and thousands of other greyhound enthusiasts, with his home town victory in the National Distance Championship at Albion Park could clinch him the AGOTY title. Statistics EARLIER in the year OTL printed figures that were accumulated by various offend-ers for misdemeanors committed on our Victorian tracks.

Some readers might think the issue displays negativity, but the figures illus-trate that there are many greyhounds frequenting our tracks on a regular basis

that aren’t fair dinkum chasers. OTL’s scrutiny suggests that aspect could stem from our breeding lines, or a rigid stance on what type of incentive is offered to chasers at trial tracks.

The latest six months of figures, from June 1 to August 31 and September 1 through to November 30 shows the fol-lowing bad traits: Fighting and Marring offences 26/25; Greyhounds that were warned regarding their racing manners: 65/30; Greyhounds pinged for Failing To Chase: 72/50; Greyhounds that per-formed unsatisfactorily: 23/8; Fatalities: 13/14 (not good reading); Miscellaneous category, which covers a whole raft of indiscretions: 31/25.

The latter category involves box man-ners; cardiac complications, cramp cases; exhaustion; fits or spasms; improved performance (not enough), no races; greyhounds that stay or turn in the boxes; “Thumps” and unsatisfactory perform-ances (not enough).

Many would be surprised by those figures but in my humble opinion, a lot has to do with how heavy handed Stew-ards can be when they scrutinize races.

Many offenders, in my humble opin-ion again, fly under the radar. Track etiquette MIGHT be a good idea for GRV to con-duct a workshop for all clubs, city and provincial, on how to conduct a proper trackside presentation.

Seen a couple of clangers recently, where the sponsors have been over-looked and even the formal presentation of handing over the spoils, including the silverware, has been forgotten.

The dialogue from those entrusted to use the microphone on these important nights also leaves a lot to be desired.

Not a good look

The race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the

strong, but that's the way to bet.

Silverview Perky scored a runaway near seven lengths win in the William Hill Oaks, giving legendary six-time Derby winning trainer, Charlie Lister his first success in the prized 6,000 to the winner event. The hot favourite gave owner, Toni Tungatt an all the way victory in the 480 metres classic. William Hill spokeswoman, Jennie Prest said, “Silverview Perky lit up the Oaks competition the whole way through and it’s very exciting there is a good bitch who looks capable of taking on the boys in the Derby.” Following on from the boost to the prizemoney announced by sponsors William Hill for the €125,000 English Derby, they have also pledged to increase the prize money to €15,000 for both the St. Leger and Oaks in 2012. Head of Racing Media, Kate Miller explained, “We recognised there was a disparity between the Oaks and St. Leger prizemoney compared to other significant Category One championships and there was wholehearted support within the company to correct this.” Pictured (L-R) Charlie Lister, Silverview Perky’s owner, Toni Tungatt and husband, Ian, William Hill’s Jennie Prest and kennel hand, Ian Sutherland.

Letter WE RECEIVED a letter which read: “On November 28 Be My Girl whelped a litter of 11 to Lochinvar Marlow. Be My Girl has had one litter, with those members racing now in-cluding Little Ed, Yo Cool Maxie, Chadrick, At The Grind, Cool Zack Knee, Mango, Tip Me Tekay, Top Gear, Cool Cupcake and Cades Blue Boy. We chose Lochinvar Marlow, as he is a young sire and a son of the great Bombastic Shiraz and has the exceptional damline of that wonder-ful racer and producer, Sensation Lee. Be My Girl’s dam is Beki Coal, who produced city and TAB winning dogs, in particular Two Romeo Road (a full brother to Be My Girl), who won 19 races, 10 of those at Wen-tworth Park. Be My Girl now has city and TAB winners in her only litter to Big Daddy Cool.

Beki Coal was mated to Lochin-var Jet (Kevin Gordon owns both Lochinvar Jet and Lochinvar Marlow, both beautifully bred on the sire’s and dam’s side).

The exciting damline cross on both sides of this recent litter to Lochinvar Marlow should produce some worthwhile racers.

And for those interested in tap-ping into this future and consistent producing damline, some bitch pup-pies will be for sale at ear brand age, with early interest welcomed.

Great attraction The Meadows December 14 WITH TIMES mostly on the slow-ish side at The Meadows last Wednesday afternoon, in the 11th race of the day, the Hudson Pacific Grade 5, we saw Penguin Tori become the fastest winner for the day.

Trained by “Mr. Fixit”, Gary Brett at Wer-ribee, Penguin Tori exited the seven trap in full flight, running the first section in 5.15, with Mix It Up and Cray Bale in close attendance.

Down the back to pause the timer at 18.04 saw the blue fawn chaser gain a race winning four lengths break over Mix It Up ($7.60) and the wide tracking Cray Bale, who was in plenty of bother soon after.

In an extra strong performance, Penguin Tori ($2.20 fav) coasted home a seven and a half lengths winner, running the 525 metres in 30.27.

Mix It Up clung on for second, a neck in front of fast finishing railer, Tiny Power ($14.00).

Penguin Tori, a daughter of Surf Lorian and Senza Nome, raced by the Penguin Rac-ing Syndicate, opened her account at the northern suburbs venue when notching her third win with three placings from nine career starts.

Trubbo, who had recently handed in a solid sprint win at The Meadows, was stepped-up to the middle distance by trainer, Tony Thurston, and met with instant success.

Hailing from Lemnos in the Goulburn Valley, Trubbo ($2.50 fav) began brilliantly from the rails draw and handed in a first split of 9.12, showing the way over Allen Banter and Lucky Legs heading towards the turn out of the straight.

Down the back with the timer frozen at 22.30, the son of Premier Fantasy and Elektra stretched his advantage to five and a half

lengths, and with only Paquiao running on, the race was well and truly won.

It was plain sailing for the Trevor Rhodes owned chaser, who went on to win the 600 metres MTD Grade 5 in Best Of Day 34.92, beating Pacquiao ($17.70) by eight lengths, while Double Jeopardy ($6.50) wound up third, a length and a half further adrift.

From 19 raceday appearances, Trubbo has gathered six wins and eight placings.

After getting out quickly from the four alley, Black Physique (4.00) was in front and on the rail, going past the post the first time in a slick 9.08 to be ahead of Paper Spirit and Speedy Octane.

Although Paper Spirit stayed close and handy along the back, it was still the Sam Bonaccurso trained chaser that held sway at the next checkpoint in 22.38.

But it could be seen that Beau Brummel, the $2.60 favourite, was unwinding as sharp sprint as they neared the final bend.

Although Beau Brummel failed to make up the ground, going under by a half length to Black Physique in 34.98, the run was full of merit and the Lara chaser should be followed in future middle distance events.

Rank outsider, Paper Spirit ($25.00) was a further two lengths away third.

A field of six contested the Scotty’s Meats Grade 5, but the race was full of incidents.

Favourite for the 525 metres race was Salt Ash, a $2.60 pop from box four, with For-tius sent out at $4.10 from the eight gate.

A bit of minor bumping in the early stages led to Fortius finding the front over Risk It All ($4.90) when heading towards the initial cor-ner.

But it was rough, and Salt Ash was checked and fell, whilst Emona ran out of galloping space and went sliding across the sand on his side, fracturing a leg in the proc-ess.

After recording 5.19 early, Fortius edged clear along the back to post 18.20 at the next mark with a three lengths advantage.

Trained by Jamie Karamatic at Lara for Brad Burns, the red brindle sprinter held on gamely and scored by over two lengths to Risk It All in 30.71, while Mister Patience ($10.30) ran on nicely into third place.

Fortius, a son of Surf Lorian and Diamond Deb, has secured two wins with four placings from 11 starts, and opened his account at The Meadows.

The visitors kept the ball rolling when Thurgoona trainer, Nathan McMenamin booted home Magic Lomar ($22.00), whilst Victorian, Barry Martell finished 2011 at Wagga with another impressive winner via Wanalta Bay ($2.30).

The Rock training team of Ray and Petah Menz got a long overdue and well deserved winner with Child Talk, a $22.00 pop.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the local trainers as Wagga’s David Jones joined the winners circle with track specialist, Affordable ($2.40).

Wagga trainers Peter Donner and Gary Mitchell kept the local flag flying with Squee-gee ($11.50) and the well supported Flash Knocka ($2.60).

A fantastic crowd enjoyed a great night of greyhound racing.

Wagga will be carrying out track works this week and will resume trialling on Tuesday night, December 27.

On behalf of the Wagga Greyhound Club, I wish everyone and their families a fantastic, safe and enjoyable Christmas and look forward to seeing everyone again in 2012.

Just three points THE IPSWICH Greyhound Of The Year is decided on a points basis of five for a win, three for a second and one for a third placing.

It runs until December 31, and there are three race meetings remaining this year. Spring Rose, for Col Byers of Toowoomba, went into last Friday’s twilight meeting on 72 points, whilst Honey Brass, for Patricia Carrington, was on 69 points.

Both raced at the meeting and both ran third.

So it’s Spring Rose now on 73 and Honey Brass with 70. Spring Image, for Col Byers, is in third place with 63 points, but can’t improve on that tally. “The dog has a leg injury and definitely won’t race again this year,” Byers said. The other three competitions or premier-ships at Ipswich are clear-cut.

Col Byers is 150 points ahead of nearest placed Mick Emery in the Trainers Premier-ship.

Newly appointed Club President, Bob Essex will be the leading owner by about 40 points, and Rachel Scott will be the top fe-male trainer by a similar margin.

It’s worth a try CYNTHIA SUTTLE was pretty happy at the Tuesday Ipswich twilight meeting last week when her handy performer, Riana Sue was drawn as the Trainers Jackpot runner.

If successful, Riana Sue would have picked up $1,735 for her trainer for an outlay of $5.00. “I always go into the jackpot; you’ve got to be in it to win it,” Suttle said. Trainers have the option, but it’s not compulsory to enter the jackpot competition at $5.00 per runner. Unfortunately Riana Sue, a noted slow beginner, got back in the field before running on strongly to finish second.

The winner, Westend Star scored by eight lengths, so it wasn’t a case of Suttle’s runner going down by a narrow margin. Suttle had three other runners on the day; Third Wheel ran seventh, Pure Monarch fifth and Not So Pure won his race.

Obviously, it would have been a happy ending had Not So Pure’s name been drawn as the jackpot runner, rather than Riana Sue.

“I’ve never won the jackpot at Ipswich, but I picked up $2,000 at Capalaba a while back with Bobalong,” Suttle recalled.

“He was only an average dog but put in just about the best run of his life that day.”

“It seemed a bit odd to race for a few hundred dollars prizemoney and get a jack-pot of $2,000 as well.”

Swansong success I WAS ASKED the other day what was my highlight of greyhound racing in 2011. I didn’t hesitate for a second in giving a reply.

It was the opportunity to call Dashing Corsair winning the National Distance Cham-pionship at Albion Park in August. The dog had been such a crowd-pleaser Australia-wide over nearly three seasons and deserved to bow out in a blaze of glory.

The race was announced as his race-track swansong, win, lose or draw.

But he was under an injury cloud. Many people, myself included, rather

hoped that Dwyer Lennon might pull the pin, scratch the dog from that grand final and thereby ensure that there was no chance that ‘Harry’ might hobble around the course.

Nobody wanted to see that. Lennon pressed-on, doing a marvellous job to get the dog to the post.

Dashing Corsair did the rest, lifted him-self from the canvas in the run and survived the fast finishing run of Lady Arko to score by a neck. Calling any Group race gives a race-caller a decent sort of a buzz.

But that one was something special. Everyone went wild about ‘Harry’.

Deagon will do AS FOR a disappointment of 2011, I’m not Robinson Crusoe in lamenting the lack of a spacious ‘one turn’ track in south-east Queensland. It’s hard to believe that it was August 2007 when the Queensland Government announced that the Gold Coast’s Parklands track would close, the land being required on which to build a hospital.

The track closed in July, 2008. Here we are going into 2012 and the

prospect of seeing racing on a similar shaped track, albeit at Deagon, Logan or anywhere, still looks to be a long time away.

Consider this Why is it that when you attempt to catch something falling from a table, you knock something else over?

Bekim at stud BOOM SPRINTER, Bekim Bale has broken down and will soon com-mence stud duties.

The freakish young sprinter, who currently holds the Sandown 515 me-tres track record at 28.96, reportedly dropped a back muscle in a recent trial.

In just a short career of 11 starts, the son of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale won eight races, including the Group 3 Shootout.

He also made two Group 1 Fi-nals, the Melbourne Cup and the Brisbane Cup, finishing out of the money in both.

His sire, Bartrim Bale, who was sold to China, would more than likely have been in big demand once Bekim Bale and his brother, Heston Bale started racing, but breeders were just too late.

Those who seek the bloodlines can now get it through his son.

Bartrim Bale is a son of Halluci-nate and Gold Rush Bale, and that of course means that Bekim Bale is a great grandson of Brett Lee.

Bekim Bale’s dam, Amelia Bale was a top flight chaser and a litter sister of champion stayer, Amity Bale, both being daughters of Sonic Flight and Evonne Bale.

Bekim Bale, who may make a comeback if his injury comes good, will stand with Paul Westerveld at a fee of $1,650.

So what’s up? OKAY, can somebody tell me what’s up?

Besides the sky, the price of pet-rol, beer and cigarettes, I’m thinking more along the lines of in greyhound racing.

Actually, I have a specific topic in mind.

The Sale Cup is called, in some circles, the ‘Middle Distance Cham-pionship’ of Australia.

Actually, I don’t totally subscribe to that train of thought.

The race is over 650 metres, and that is as far in distance as I would go in calling a race ‘middle distance’.

I’d more than likely say short staying race.

How I justify that line of reason-ing is that the shortest distance a Na-tional Distance Championship has been held over is 673 metres, gee, that’s not much further than Sale’s staying trip.

When Sale was 630 metres, I‘d have said middle distance for sure.

Anyhow, it’s still getting away from my dilemma.

A few weeks ago, Sandown had the Group 1 Bold Trease Carnival Cup over 715 metres worth $75,000 to the winner.

They got 19 entries. Sale’s race is worth $75,000 also

and they got 34 entries, as near as I can tell.

Well, they have four heats with the same pair of reserves in all four.

Now again we have a case of a Victorian club calling for a specific number of dogs, in this case 64, not

getting that number, but still leaving out eligible dogs.

I might be a bit more forgiving here, as 34 is a cow of a number to work with, but it still means that two dogs have been left out and I ask the question, why?

What, because 34 doesn’t divide evenly by 8?

Now one of those dogs that has been made a reserve is from NSW, although its trainer did manage to get three dogs in.

The other reserve is a local, one can only hope there’s a couple of scratchings and they get a berth.

But, I have to ask this… why do you think this race got nearly twice the number of entries of Sandown’s race?

What, surely not because it’s 65 metres shorter!

Another beauty THE HOBART THOUSAND final was yet another Group 1 sprint race that was a beauty.

Again we saw litter brothers Dyna Tron and Dyna Bert qualify for the same race, and even though you feel there is not all that much between them, Tron seemed to be doing a lot better than Bert leading into the rich $75,000 to the winner race.

And regular visitor to the Apple Isle, Graeme Bate took a team of dogs over and qualified with David Bale.

But the locals were out in force and five Taswegians made their way into the final.

Rewind was just brilliant, and his litter sister, Clyde’s Angel made it through to make yet another Group 1 race with two pair of siblings en-gaged.

Speaking of brilliant, so too was track specialist and record holder, Bergermeister, and wasn’t it great to see David Crosswell qualify with Galtee Again, whilst very few big races in Tassie for many years have been complete without a Ted Med-hurst trained runner.

This year he had Sandbanker make his way through.

Again, full marks to Hobart for yet again making their biggest race a truly memorable one.

Pups step out TWO of the biggest puppy races on the Victorian calendar have com-menced. The time honoured Silver Chief at Group 1 level has begun at The Meadows, whilst Sandown has its Laurels, now a Group 2 race, in full swing.

The Silver Chief, which carries a first prize of $75,000, is open for male greyhounds whelped on or after June 1, 2009.

Judging by the fact there were 11 heats drawn with fields of eight, and with no reserves, the entry count was in fact 88.

Whether through good luck or good management, it was absolutely fantastic to see that every eligible dog entered gained a run.

And by golly, there was certainly nothing wrong with the class of the

dogs that were engaged; first rate. The Laurels was Group 2 this

year after quite a few years as a Group 1 event, however, first prizemoney is the same as what it has been in recent years, $50,000.

The call was for the best 64 fe-male greyhounds plus reserves whelped on or after June 1, 2009.

And true to the requirements, there were eight heats of eight plus reserves.

Well, at least the asking require-ments were met.

As you all know, my gripe for years now is that you only get one chance to win these types of races, and for quite a while not every pup entered has gained a start.

It’s still a sore point with me, and with many other long-time partici-pants.

I have to admit, it doesn’t look like changing in the foreseeable fu-ture but there may come a day, as is happening with a lot of other Group races, where the asking number for these puppy races is not met.

Although as we see, less than 64 entries still doesn’t guarantee every-one a start.

That last fact, however, is some-thing that is going to change I feel.

Close call THERE have been plenty of discus-sions lately by people on just what dog will be the GOTY.

Different states have different rules for picking their GOTY’s.

But the Australian GOTY is a different matter and it really appears to be a close call at the moment, as any one of 10 greyhounds could pos-sibly win it.

We actually have had a grey-hound win three Group 1 events and he is a multiple track record holder, but oddly enough, I’ve heard no one mention his name.

Bobby Boucheau ran track re-cords at Sandown over both the 595 metres and the 715 metres, as well as winning the Macro Meats Australian Super Stayers over 725 metres at The Meadows, the Radio Sport National Sandown Cup over 715 metres at Sandown and the Macro Meats Gold Cup over 710 metres at Albion Park.

Perhaps because his form was in the first half of the year is the reason so many have seemingly forgotten him.

Getting close SOME of my categories in my GOTY awards are a fait accompli.

I’m not letting the cat out of the bag, but the two runs of the year I’ve already pencilled-in.

I don’t think it’s possible that some greyhound will be able to better the two I have in mind, although it is possible, I guess.

A few awards picked themselves, acts of excellence and acts of stupid-ity, gee, I’ll be surprised if the items I have in mind can be topped.

But you never know, eh? Still, when the time comes to put

it all together, it’s never as easy a task as it sometimes seems, because I can guarantee that after I write a segment, I’ll think of something that I’d appar-ently forgotten.

Mind you, some categories just pick their own winner, and by about midnight on the eve of submitting the column, I’m grateful for those.

Silence was deafening I FIRED out an email last week to a few high-up people within greyhound racing around the countryside regard-ing a little (or big) matter, thinking that some might have plenty to say. Sadly, the “silence was deafen-ing”, to coin a phrase. The only thing I can think of is the letter must have got lost in the mail.

I thought there would have been one or two prepared to have a little (or big) gloat!

Speaking of emails, another I fired out had a ‘bot’ send a response, oh the joys of technology.

Still, at least I wasn’t ignored altogether.

Thank you Time I JUST want to say “Thank You” to Time Magazine. It was lovely to be honoured as Person of the Year. Do you think I’m kidding?

Well, I am and I aren’t. I mean, I didn’t actually win the

award outright or anything like that, but I shared the award with maybe a billion others, more perhaps.

You see, Time has given this year’s award to simply “The Pro-tester”.

Time defines the Person of the Year as someone who, for better or worse, influences the events of the year.

Yes, I had my boof-head stuck in many events in many different ways, shapes and forms, so I guess I can take a little tiny piece of the award.

But I look around me and find that almost everyone on the planet does likewise.

At the end of the day, we all in-fluence what happens.

However, I guess that’s a little too broad spectrum, isn’t it?

But in the spirit of the award, Time has made a call saying that all the Occupy protesters, the Arab pro-testers and the people that influenced major changes and such, should be honoured

Whether these changes are for the better or worse, only time will tell (pardon the pun).

One thing though, we greyhound folk should learn by this.

We have organisations here de-signed to help everyone, and I really liked a comeback line I spotted re-cently.

An organisation was called a “toothless tiger”, which drew the re-sponse along the lines of “we would-n’t be if people like you joined”.

Okay, so it’s similar to Unionism, but there’s strength in numbers.

But I will point out that any chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and having been a member of many organisations, I’ve seen people that are only there for the ride.

Or worse, only around when things are good.

I reckon you’re better off without them.

In greyhound racing, way too many people are afraid to express an opinion, and that saddens me.

Actually, it used to. After more than 40 years of see-

ing people act this way, I’ve come to the conclusion that perhaps they don’t want things changed, and they’re happy with things the way they are.

Which maybe is why we haven’t had an Occupy a dog track protest as yet, although some trainers probably feel they’re at the track more than anywhere else and are having their own little personal ‘Occupy’ rally.

A Christmas present for you NEVER let it be said that the Tree-man isn’t a generous person.

I’ve decided to give a free Christ-mas present to anyone who wants it.

Ballarat based band, Placebo Cure have just recorded a song called “My Greyhound Isn’t Grey”, and if you’d like a FREE MP3 copy of it, just email me and it’s yours.

It’s that simple, no strings at-tached, all yours gratis… no forms to fill in, no questions to answer, just a freebie from yours truly.

If you want to hear it first, or other songs by the band, feel free to visit any of their websites.

The “Reverb’ one also has a store, well, no need to tell you what’s there.

Anyhow, the link to the “Reverb” website is:

Merry Christmas FOR those of you who celebrate Christmas, I hope it’s a very merry one. For those that don’t but who are having a break, Happy Holidays. To the rest of you, just carry on as per usual.

If you’re out on the roads over the Christmas/New Year period, as I know many of you will be, take extra care and watch out for the drunks coming home from the Christmas parties.

And if that jovial, obese and hir-sute chap in the red outfit pays you a visit, I hope he leaves you something nice!

Your Say “Vigilant Watcher” stated, “I noticed that you mentioned that Sandown put on a 7 dog race as a leg of the Quad-die on December 1.”

“They bettered that on December 8 by making the first leg of the Daily Double and second leg of the Quad-die a race with just seven runners.” Yes, I noticed! “Good Call” with, “Very good call on the free entry story, Treeman.”

“I complained for years that it was a disgrace for us to have to pay to get in when we were putting on the show.”

“Nowadays there’s so much com-petition that we should have the gates open at all tracks.” Thanks for the thumbs up! “Long Timer” remarked, “I have to agree with you, if they call for 64 dogs for a Group race and only get 58, they should give every dog a run. And well done Hobart for doing that.” Yes, again, well done! “Bravo Man” stated, “Yes, Tasmania are looking after the people with the product, please take note you other states.” Yes, please do! This week’s Teaser WHO is the best greyhound of all-time? Well, seeing as I like giving out clues, I’ll tell you a couple of things. Firstly, it’s a he and he is not Australian, and not in the 21st Cen-tury either.

Anna Gram says it’s “Chagrined Phantom”.
