Established in 2009, the Asia Pacific Fundraisers’ Network is a self-sustaining network of fundraising

professionals within National Societies, the members of International Federation of Red Cross and

Red Crescent Societies. It consolidates fundraising skills, and shares knowledge and experience

within the Asia Pacific zone to realise its vision as follows:

Do more—Bringing together National Societies in Asia Pacific to work on common goals related

to Resource Mobilisation.

Do better—Building a strong network of fundraising leaders with professional skills and expertise.

Reach further—Increasing income to help more vulnerable people.

Pat Farmer, Ultra-Marathon AthleteFundraising Awards Gala Dinner special guest speaker

Pat is an ultra-marathon athlete, motivational speaker and former Australian politician. In 2012 he completed his 21,000km Pole to Pole Run, dedicated to raising funds for Red Cross. He ran over 65 kilometres every day beginning at the North Pole, travelling through Canada, the US, Central America and South America to Antarctica in the South Pole.

Mr Sy is the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). He began this leadership role on 1 August, 2014 and is based at the IFRC secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr Sy has extensive experience in leadership roles in the humanitarian sector, having previously served at a senior level with UNICEF, UNAIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and other agencies for more than 25 years.

Before joining the IFRC - the world’s largest humanitarian network - Mr. Sy was UNICEF’s Director of Partnerships and Resource Development in New York. He has also served as UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa and Global Emergency Coordinator for the Horn of Africa.

From 2005 to 2008, Mr Sy was Director, HIV/AIDS Practice with the United Nations Development Programme in New York. Before that, he worked with the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as its Africa Regional Director and later as Director of Operational Partnerships and Country Support in Geneva. Mr. Sy has also held the position of UNAIDS Representative in New York and Director of the New York Liaison Office.

From 1988 to 1997, he served as Director of Health and Development Programmes with Environment and Development Action in the Third World in Dakar, Senegal.

Mr Sy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Human Sciences from the University of Dakar. He then pursued Master’s studies in Arts and Germanistik at the University of Graz, and graduated from the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna. He was also awarded a post graduate Diploma in Education from the Ecole Normale Superieure in Dakar . He speaks English, French and German and is a national of Senegal.

PRESENTERS

DAVID ARMSTRONG, Head of Fundraising, Australian Red CrossDavid is the current 2014-15 Chair of the Asia Pacific Fundraisers’ Network. He also leads a team of 43 staff responsible for raising over $80 million a year, driving income growth from an extensive portfolio that includes Individual Giving, Regular Giving, Community Fundraising, Bequest Marketing, Corporate Partnerships, Trusts and Foundations, Major Gifts and Disaster Appeals.

DAVID BROWN, Asia Program Manager, Australian Red CrossFor the past 20 years David has worked in a variety of international development contexts, both in grassroots implementation, program and human resource management and senior leadership roles. He is particularly interested in organizational learning and accountability, and in responding to the challenges posed by organisational inefficiencies, gender inequity, and exclusion of people with disability.

KATE BURTT, Senior Donor Development Executive, Australian Red CrossKate is responsible for the development and retention of 124,000 regular giving donors, delivering over $35million annually. She manages telemarketing campaigns through external agencies and produces retention communications to update donors on the programs their donations are supporting. Prior to Red Cross she worked at Greenpeace Australia Pacific and Wesley Mission.

SHIRLIE BERNABE-ALICANTE, Officer-in-Charge, Philippine Red Cross, Rizal ChapterShirlie leads one of the biggest chapters of Philippine Red Cross with a mixture of rural and urban areas. She ensures that services are properly delivered on time and to the right beneficiaries efficiently and effectively and raises funds to maintain service delivery operations.

JOHN BURNS, Head of Fundraising, Médecins sans Frontières AustraliaJohn started his fundraising career as a Community Development Coordinator in the Victorian Division of Australian Red Cross, followed by six years at Amnesty International Australia as the Donor Development Manager. In his current role as Head of Fundraising, John has lead Médecins Sans Frontières Australia to being one the most successful fundraising organisations in the country.

ANDREW COOK, Head of Private Fundraising, ICRCAndrew was appointed to his current role in in 2012, previously working at Water Aid as UK Deputy Chief Executive and International Director of Communications & Fundraising. He is a fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (UK), on the Advisory Board for the International Fundraising Congress and sits on the Steering Group of the International Fundraising Leadership Forum.

PATRICK CUMMINGS, General Manager Fundraising (Acting), New Zealand Red CrossPatrick has worked for New Zealand Red Cross for over twenty years, firstly as a Regional Manager, then as National Retail Manager. He has represented Red Cross on several occasions internationally, led New Zealand Red Cross’ first staff team to assist in the Queensland Floods in 2011, and managed the Red Cross Call Centre in the Christchurch Earthquakes.

JILL FORD, Community Fundraising Manager, New Zealand Red CrossOver 20 years Jill has lead numerous integrated marketing and communication strategies within the corporate and not for profit sectors. She has acquired and managed many corporate partners, gained grants, and run a wide variety of corporate, cultural, sporting, awards and conference events. Jill has keenly embraced the digital world and is always keen to experiment.

EMILIA KOSKI, Relationship Manager, Asia Pacific Zone, IFRCEmilia works with the Humanitarian Diplomacy team on business development, resource mobilization, strategic planning, capacity development and humanitarian diplomacy. She has over ten years professional experience and previously served in the company management team at a monitoring and evaluation consultancy. Prior to that Emilia set up and lead an innovative partnership between Finnish Red Cross and Accenture Finland.

LAUREN ELLIS, Senior Officer-Capacity Building, Strategic Partnerships & International Relations, IFRCAfter 9 years at British Red Cross, Lauren recently joined IFRC. In her new role she will support the implementation of the FWRMS strategy to ‘increase the resource mobilisation capacity of National Societies’ and will lead the development of a consolidated approach to RM capacity building, focus on knowledge sharing and collaboration and drive benchmarking initiatives.

LIA GUNAWAN, National Business Partnership Manager, Australian Red CrossLia has strengthened and enhanced existing partnerships including Sanitarium, Johnson & Johnson and PwC and has been capacity building Trusts and Foundations through her strong Financial Planner contacts to open up new funding opportunities. She is working together with international Red Cross and Red Crescent colleagues to foster global exchange and promote multi national partnerships.

ALICE LING, Manager of Resources Development Team, Hong Kong Red Cross Alice has over 10 years of experience in fundraising. She is responsible for overseeing the in-house face-to-face appeal for regular giving and the telemarketing team. She also takes the lead in various campaigns for fundraising, promotion and communications such as Flag Day and the fundraising campaigns for the New Headquarters Redevelopment Project.

PRESENTERS

ZOE MANDER-JONES, International Development PractitionerZoë Mander-Jones has twenty years experience in international development, in both the government and non-government sectors. Zoë worked for 15 years for AusAID and, as a senior manager, was involved in recent changes including the integration of the aid program into the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

IVANA MRDJA, Senior Officer, Mobilisation and Donor Relations, IFRCIvana manages relations with key Governments and National Societies that provide contributions to the IFRC. She also manages the IFRC Donor Advisory Group that consists of the 6 top donor governments and their National Societies, and the European Union. Ivana was part of the team that developed the Federation Wide Resource Mobilisation Strategy (FWRMS) that provides the key objectives that the IFRC should be working towards achieving.

MARTIN PAUL, Consultant, More StrategicMartin is one of Australia’s most respected charity marketing and fundraising experts and has dedicated the past 20 years to helping not for profit organisations achieve greater impact by aligning marketing and mission; creating a culture of success and raising more funds. As Director of Marketing and Communications at Cancer Council NSW, he raised over $253m for cancer research, support and prevention, through events, regular giving, brand and marketing management, retail and social marketing.

MATTHEW MCCRACKEN, Corporate Partnerships and Trusts Fundraising Manager, New Zealand Red CrossMatthew has worked in corporate partnerships and business development for nine years, four of which was focused in disaster relief, international aid programs and fundraising. He was the Global Partnership Manager with the Aid and International Development Forum, London and has also worked for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand where corporate partnerships helped generate more than NZ$1 million in six months.

DR GWENDOLYN PANG, Secretary General, Philippine Red CrossGwen has more than 2 decades of volunteer, professional & leadership experience within the Red Cross movement in key areas of management & services including resource mobilization. She was the previous Co-Chair of SIG-FWRMS and 2011–13 APFN Chair where she took the lead establishing its membership base, among others. She continues to work in advisory capacity to APFN.

ROBERT PECK, Data Insight Manager, Australian Red CrossRob has spent over 12 years working in Marketing Intelligence & Analytics, Database Business Analysis and Market Research. At Australian Red Cross he has overseen numerous projects to improve information quality and implement improved data and segmentation processes, resulting in improving fundraising outcomes and harnessing supporter engagement.

INDAH PUSPITA, Head of Fundraising, Indonesian Red CrossIndah is responsible for planning and creating fundraising concepts, gaining more funding from other organisations and the private sector, integrating with service departments (health, disaster management, and volunteer), developing a 5 year strategic plan, maintaining donor relationships, developing a database and improving branch capacity in Resource Mobilisation.

PETER THOMAS, Director of Marketing and Fundraising, Amnesty International AustraliaPete has been part of the team at Amnesty International Australia since 1999 and is primarily responsible for helping to build a stronger Australian Section. The organization is now over four times larger then when he started and is achieving much greater human rights impact in Australia and abroad. He was previously seconded to the headquarters of Amnesty International and is currently a member of the global Fundraising Management Team.

JANPRAPA VICHITCHOLCHAI, Assistant Director, Thai Red Cross SocietyJanprapra focuses on overall internal management systems, including human resources, financing and accounting, logistics management, strategic planning, marketing and communications and public relations. She is also responsible for events fundraising, capital fundraising campaigns, individual giving, regular giving, advertising pamphlet distribution and online fundraising.

CHRIS TAN, Head of Fundraising, Singapore Red CrossChris is responsible for expanding, developing, systemizing and stabilizing fundraising strategies and best practice, to ensure long term sustainable support for local initiatives, programs and services. He set the record for the highest ever achieved fundraising figure for Singapore Red Cross in 2013, and is poised to set an even higher record this year.

LOUISE TURNER, Bequest Retention Manager/ Disaster Appeal Manager, Australian Red CrossLouise has been with Australian Red Cross for 6 years and after working in the Bequest team for 4 years, was offered the opportunity of concurrently managing the many challenges of international and domestic Disaster Appeals. Before working under the humanitarian banner, Louise worked for 7 years with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

WINNIE WONG, Head of Communications and Resource Development, Hong Kong Red CrossWinnie leads the department developing fundraising strategies, including driving fundraising campaigns, enhancing donor loyalty and relationship building, and maintaining a high standard of accountability to donors. The department raises over HK$70m annually, covering over 75% of Hong Kong Red Cross service needs.
