From Inspector Nick Butler.....

To find out more about events in your area

visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and enter your postcode in the postcode

search tool.

You may have noticed o f f i c e r s carrying out high-visibility patrols around the border of Hucknall, s t o p p i n g

drivers and talking to pedestrians. This was all part of Operation Divot which has seen crime plummet by 39% since it was launched on April 23. It was run for four weeks and in that time there were 69 fewer crimes recorded when compared to the previous year.

The number of house burglaries dropped by 75%, robberies were down 67%, theft 30%, criminal damage 54% and violence against a person reduced by 20%. For us it was about getting back to basics. We know that the majority of offenders who commit crime in Hucknall don’t live in the town and instead travel from other areas, like Nottingham.

The policing team concentrated on patrolling the perimeter of the town at hotspot times to prevent criminals from entering the area either on foot or in vehicles. And anyone behaving suspiciously or seen driving through the town during unsociable hours were stopped and spoken to by the officers.

This work not only lead to a significant reduction in crime, but it has improved the intelligence and information we have about the vehicles and people who visit Hucknall. This data will undoubtedly help us with our enquiries in the future.

A number of suspected criminals were also arrested during the four week period. This includes 44-year-old Derbyshire man who was arrested following a distraction burglary at a house in Nottingham Road on Tuesday 8 May, where cash was stolen from an elderly couple by a man claiming to be a police officer. He was charged with burglary and theft and remanded into police custody.

As part of the operation there was a strong focus on preventing theft from vehicles and letters were sent to motorists who left items on show, suggesting they follow simple crime prevention advice.

Regular neighbourhood alerts were sent out to local residents by email or text highlighting current crime trends and advice about deterring crime.

The operation may have come to an end on Sunday 20 May but the tactics employed by the team will continue to be used in the weeks and months to come.

We were able to conduct the operation thanks to the support of police volunteers, local response officers, detectives from CID and officers from Mansfield Woodhouse and Ashfield North policing teams.

It is hoped that it will now be rolled out to other areas within the county division.

Anyone who has information about criminality where they live should contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Grab a Kebab!Kebabs are easy to prepare, quick to cook and healthy. You can cook them over a bbq, under a grill or using a grill pan on the stove. Skewers can be wooden or metal. Wooden ones need a good soak in water first. Metal skewers can be re-used and also conduct heat, helping to cook meat through.

Halloumi and Veg Kebabs200g halloumi cheese1 or 2 courgettes2 red onionscherry tomatoes2 yellow peppersmarinade2 tbsp olive oiljuice of 1/2 lemon1 tsp dried oregano

Spicy Chicken Kebabs450g chicken breast2 red onionscherry tomatoesmarinade2 tbsp olive oil1 tbsp red wine vinegarjuice of half a limepinch chilli powder or flakes2 cloves garlic finely chopped

Fruit Kebabspineapplebananas x21 x ripe mangostrawberriesmarinade2 tbsp honey1 tbsp brown sugarjuice of half a lime

Seafood Kebabs190g uncooked king prawns200g scallops - (king are better but I could only get queen)1 fillet of white fish like monkfish6 rashers of streaky baconmarinade2 cloves garlic - finely choppedpinch of chilli powder2 tbsp olive oiljuice of half lemon Cut the fillet of white fish and add along with the rest of the fish to a bowl. Mix the marinade and add to the fish. Stir to coat and leave for at least an hour. Cut each rasher of bacon into 3 strips and use it to wrap around the scallops. Thread the fish onto skewers and bbq until all the fish is cooked through. Lovely with couscous.

Prepare the fruit into bite size chunks and thread onto skewers. If you are cooking on an outdoor bbq it might be an idea to lay the fruit on foil. I used a grill pan and melted some butter on it first. Place the kebabs on the heat and brush with the marinade. Turn and cook until the fruit starts to go brown and caramelise. This should only be a few minutes. Delicious served with ice cream, creme fraiche or chocolate sauce.

Cut chicken into chunks. Mix marinade and add to chicken. Cover and leave overnight. Thread chicken, red onion and tomatoes onto skewers and cook until chicken is cooked through. Make sure it is thoroughly cooked.

Cut the cheese, courgettes, red onion and yellow pepper into bite size chunks and place in a bowl with the tomatoes. Mix the marinade ingredients and add to the vegetables. Mix really well and leave for as long as possible. Over night is good. Thread the veg and cheese onto skewers and grill until browned & the veg are cooked.

The Green Dragon on Watnall Road in Hucknall was built in the 1930’s. I wasn’t sure what to expect but had a lovely surprise when I walked in. It was a fresh, light and airy pub, with a really welcoming atmosphere. The Green Dragon was refurbished in March of this year. As you can see from the before and after pictures - it has really changed for the better.

I had lunch with my family and we were really impressed with the quality of the food – and the prices!!! Just recently I have become quite critical of pubs that promise home cooked and home made food.

We ordered the Green Dragon burger - £3.99, homemade Mexican chilli - £4.89 and surf and turf for £6.99. I can honestly say that the chilli was absolutley delicious

and cooked from scratch on the premises. The chips were also in a class of their own.

Another bonus for us was the choice of six real ales. These are always available.

Lunchtime meals are served from 12pm till 2.30pm and evening meals are from 5pm till 8pm. On Sundays fresh roasts are available from 12pm – 4pm.

The Grand Central Chorus, singing ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’ and ‘South Rampart Street Parade’ took the winner’s medal at The Barbershop Singers National Championships in Southport on the 27th May. ‘It was fabulous’ said Bryan Smith from Long Eaton, ‘I only joined seven months ago and here I am with a gold medal – terrific.’

The Long Eaton based chorus won the gold medal for the fifth time in their 21 year career. ‘I felt we were in with a chance’ said Chorus Director John Grant who was the Director when the Chorus was formed and returned 18 months ago to the role. ‘We came third last year and I knew we’d improved but, so might the other Choruses’. John Archer a long standing member of the Bass section and resident of Hucknall, said, ‘It was nerve wracking, third place was announced, not us, then second, not us, then the brief wait for first place is awful, gold or nothing, happily it was gold. The chorus were ecstatic. 2003 was the last time we won Gold and many of the guys on the risers were there then.’

The British Association of Barbershop Singers holds a National Convention annually. This was the 38th and forty choruses were taking part. Each Chorus is marked on their choice of music, presentation and quality of the singing. Grand Central achieved 79.1%.

Anyone wishing to sing Barbershop or seeking an entertainment for an event can find out more on the website www.grandcentralchorus.com or ring Martin on 07855270803. The Chorus rehearse every Wednesday evening at Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton NG10 4BJ. Come along and see what you think they are always on the lookout for new recruits..

Singers show Olympians the way to gold

Local WI Delegates helped fill to the rafters The Royal Albert Hall in London at their annual AGM. And, just like every WI and every WI meeting there was something for everybody: from voting on the resolution calling upon the government to increase and retain midwives, to the amusing talk from Lord Julian Fellowes on his inspiration for his Downtown characters, to the fantastic dancing of Christina Rhianoff and her partner from Strictly Come Dancing.

As the National Chair, Ruth Bond said in her address, “The WI means something to every member; and you know, if we just stop to think, it is what we make of it and it is up to us to make it everything we want it to be but, above all- it is there for you – to dip into once a month or to become immersed in some aspects of all that is on offer. Easier Recycling of Small Electrical Items in Gedling Thanks to New Initiative

Gedling residents with unwanted small electrical equipment can now recycle them locally thanks to new WEEE (Waste Electrical

and Electronic Equipment) banks.

The WEEE banks can be found with our other recycling banks

on Haywood Road, Mapperley, Morrisons in Colwick, Sainsburys

in Arnold and Milton Court in Ravenshead. They are

distinguishable by their grey colour with pink writing and the

Gedling Borough Council logo.

The banks are a joint initiative between Gedling Borough Council and Veolia Environmental Services, Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors. They are suitable for small electrical items such as toasters and irons and once collected, will be sent on for recycling. Other bulkier items such as fridges and freezers can be taken to a Household Waste Recycle Centre or collected by Gedling Borough Council for a small charge.

The banks are running as a pilot scheme and if proven successful, will be rolled out to other districts across the county.

As the summer season draws to a close many businesses are facing the bleak decision of making redundancies in what will be the lead up to Christmas.

Angela Shaw, employment solicitor at Massers Solicitors in Nottingham, is advising workers of the need to understand their rights when an employer starts a redundancy procedure and also for employers to understand their obligations.

In my experience there tends to be a rise in redundancies at this time of year and businesses are continuing to look at options for cost cutting and rationalisation. The economic downturn has made redundancy more commonplace but many businesses are still unaware of their obligations during the redundancy process.

There must be a genuine reason for the redundancy and a thorough consultation for the purposes of involving all affected employees. The consultation should address why there is a

risk of a redundancy and what could be done to avoid it, for instance, whether there is a suitable alternative position that could be offered even if it is on a fixed trial basis. Where an employer decides that there is a case for redundancy, there will be a right of appeal against that decision. If the decision is upheld, there may be grounds to pursue a complaint of unfair dismissal at an Employment Tribunal in addition to any other relevant claim.

An employee who is made redundant could be eligible for a statutory redundancy payment or there may even be a provision for an enhanced payment. In some circumstances, an employee may be asked to enter into a Compromise Agreement. This is a confidential document whereby the employee will forfeit employment rights in return for an ex gratia payment. It will be necessary to seek independent legal advice about the document for which an employer will usually make a contribution towards the costs of that advice.

Calmness, clarity and a cup of tea is at the heart of what Maggie’s is all about.

Maggie’s Centres are for anyone affected by cancer. They are places where people are welcome whenever they need us – from initial diagnosis or undergoing treatment, to post-treatment, recurrence, end of life or in bereavement. We also welcome family and friends, as they can also be deeply affected by cancer.

Every Maggie’s Centre has a kitchen table. A safe place where people can sit and gather their thoughts over a cup of tea, chat to others going through similar experiences or speak to someone who can answer any questions they may have.

At the Nottingham Centre people who come through our doors for the first time are pleasantly surprised by the light and airy atmosphere of the Centre. Greeted by our volunteers or staff your first cup of tea is made for you. Following a tour of the building you’re encouraged to think of the centre as an extension of your home, a place to find the strength and help you need.

Many visitors take advantage of the professional advice on offer from our Cancer Support Specialist or our Benefits Adviser. A varied programme of activities is open to anybody affected by cancer, from yoga, Tai Chi and relaxation, to nutrition courses and hair loss workshops.

We would like to offer people the opportunity to experience their own Maggie’s Moment and get to know us a little bit better. People are invited to come along to Maggie’s Nottingham, Gate 3, Nottingham City Hospital Campus, Hucknall Road, Nottingham, NG5 1PH every Wednesday from 4pm-5pm.Contact: Melanie Kerruish, Fundraising Organiser, 0115 924 6211, [email protected]

On the south eastern edge of Hucknall Torkard a new estate had been built. In 1876 the area which was called Butlers Hill contained at least 415 inhabited houses with about 2,000 residents. Schools had already been built to provide education for the children and non-conformist churches such as the Congregational, Methodist and Church of Christ had established places of worship.

From the Butlers Hill area Church of England worshippers had to make the journey up to St. Mary’s in the centre of town but this changed when the Duke of Portland generously gave one acre of land for a mission church. Within a few weeks a sum of £800 was donated for the cause which enabled the well known architect Bromley to begin planning the building. “A young clergyman the Rev. H.C.Hicks was ordained to serve in the district and almost at once began to hold services in a ‘shop’ (mission room) in Whyburn Street bought for that purpose.” The Nottingham Journal gave the information that on Wednesday April 5th 1878 at 3pm the foundation stone of the new church would be laid by the Right Rev. the Bishop of Lincoln which would be followed by a tea meeting and a concert of sacred music.

Newspaper reports of the stone laying ceremony say that “when the church is complete it will hold a congregation of about 500 people but first a nave and temporary chancel will be built to hold about 250 – 300. The church walls will be of Linby stone with Bath stone facings in an architectural style called Early French. Eventually the congregation hope to add a tower and spire but for the present a bell turret will take their place.” At 3 o’clock a crowd gathered to watch the ceremony by the Lord Bishop who opened the proceedings with praise and prayer. Mr. Widdowson handed the Bishop a silver trowel suitably inscribed for the occasion and after he had spread mortar under the suspended stone it was lowered into place. The Bishop then stood on the foundation stone to give a short address and after prayers and singing the hymn ‘The Churches One Foundation’, the ceremony was terminated.

Eleven months later the new church was opened. “A joyously inspired procession followed their father in God, Bishop Tozer, from the mission rooms in Whyburn Street to their future home. The main body of the church was now complete. Bishop Tozer opened and dedicated the building on March 6th 1877.” Much interesting information comes from an eye witness newspaper account. “Inside the church the wall at the east end is divided into two alcoves and in the northward recess under the window stands the communion table. Southward is the harmonium.Seating accommodation is provided by rush bottomed chairs fitted with kneeling boards and book rests at the back. By night the building is illuminated by gas and the heating is by stoves but when funds allow a

system of hot water heating will be installed. Mr. Henry Beardsmore has been ordained to act as lay reader.” Butlers Hill School log book says: “Attendance was reduced owing to the opening of a new church in the neighbourhood.” Entertainments and other meetings continued to be held in the mission rooms in Whyburn Street.

Years later an advertisement appeared in a local newspaper the Hucknall Morning Star and Advertiser, January 18th 1895.

After almost 20 years the church was extended by building a chancel and this was consecrated by Dr. George Ridding, the first Bishop of Southwell.

The beautiful window above the high altar shows the crucifixtion of our Lord with his parents at each side and was erected as a memorial to the men of Butlers Hill who died in the Great War.

Over the years St. John the Evangelist Church has changed and been altered to fit the needs of the congregation. It still remains a beautiful building well suited to its original purpose of providing for Church of England worshippers over 130 years later.

St. John’s marriage registers begin in January 1884 when John William Jarvis married Elizabeth Ann Ellis and Baptism registers start in January 1888 with Sarah Elizabeth Wildig. Early original registers have been deposited at Nottinghamshire Archives Office but microfiche copies can be seen in Hucknall Library.

Soil, especially in raised beds, benefits from being enriched with compost. It contains essential nutrients to help the plants grow. Whilst you can buy ready made compost - making it yourself is cheap and very eco-friendly by reducing the amount of household waste going to landfil. Even the smallest garden can compost.

There are loads of different options for composting - however if you have a small garden like mine you are more limited. A great idea is a wormery. Worms eat lots of kitchen waste like used tea bags, vegetable peelings, stale bread and crushed egg shells. They also like shredded paper and small amounts of garden waste. The worms then convert

the waste into a rich fertilizer. A basic wormery costs around £60.

A ready made composting bin is another option. These are good value, starting at around £16, and easy to use. You add garden waste, shredded paper, vegetable peelings etc. through the top and after a few months you can remove the compost via a door at the bottom. There are products available to add to the composter to accelerate the process but left to its on devices nature will take its course. Always remember to place the bin onto bare earth to encourage the

worms and microbes to do their magic. Although these plastic bins are not very attractive to look at you can screen them using evergreen plants, trellis with a climber growing up it or a willow or bamboo screen.

During the spring and summer months we have loads of grass cuttings which are great for the compost bin, however to produce good compost layer with other waste. Grass can compact and fail to rot down if it is piled together in a big heap.

Leaf mould is also great for the garden. A cheap and easy way to cultivate it is to collect the fallen leaves in Autumn in black bin liners. Once almost full, add a small amount of water, tie up and shake. Then pierce a few holes in the bottom and sides of the bag and put away somewhere (ours are behind the garden shed). After a year or two you should have a good quality leaf mould.

Most local authorities have composting schemes. The best thing to do is check out their websites or go to www.getcomposting.com. This website works in partnership with local councils. You simply type in your postcode and you get a list of products available in your area at reduced rates.

Since then, it has become a badly needed lifeline, also taking in sick and injured animals & birds, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers working from their own homes.

We’ve taken in so many cats over the last few months that we desperately need new

fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you

think you can help us, please ring our Recruitment Officer on 0115 9563799.

Volunteer Drivers Needed!

Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit are looking for volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours to spare during the daytime. We really need your help to transport rescued animals to and from vets and foster homes. If you’d like to learn more, please ring our Recruitment Officer on 0115 9563799.
