Did you know...Norfolk has a rich history spanning more than 400 years? It all began when John Smith and his crew cruised past this area looking for a landing point, eventually ending up in Jamestown. With its proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, Norfolk has always been a vital center of commerce and industry, as well as a strategic military location. The area was right in the thick of several Revolutionary and Civil War battles: in 1776, two-thirds of the city was destroyed by the Royal Governor of Virginia, and a cannonball from the siege can still be viewed today lodged in the wall of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. What’s more, during the Civil War, the infamous battle between the ironclads Monitor and Merrimac was fought off these shores.

E xplore Nauticus, downtown Norfolk’s waterfront maritime science center, for a full spectrum of hands-on exhibits focused on the immense power of the sea and

Norfolk’s unique seaport.Begin with Our Mighty Seaport, an exhibit which explores the

fascinating world of maritime commerce. Families can navigate a tugboat down a busy waterway and receive “real time” information on ships sailing past Nauticus. Venture outside the exhibit walls and catch a glimpse of giant cranes, tugs, sailboats, and cargo ships from the Elizabeth River Observation Deck.

Relive the past with Guns,

Battleship, an exhibit including enormous gun devices, tools, and personal mementos from

Norfolk’s own Battleship Wisconsin. You can view the mighty warship from the Wisconsin Vista, filled with displays that tell the Wisconsin’s exciting story prior to actually ‘walking the decks of history.’

Don’t miss Science on a Sphere, a six-foot globe displaying weather phenomena around the world, or the popular Shark Lab, where visitors can learn about shark conservation. Be sure to visit our other marine life, including the residents of Horseshoe Crab Cove, tropical fish, seahorses, and one giant green moray eel.

Take a break from exhibits with a 3D film in the Nauticus Theater. Outside the theater, you can step inside The Clelia, an underwater exploration submersible, and control an actual 9-foot long robotic arm to collect samples and artifacts from the seabed.

Especially unique to Nauticus are live science programs conducted by Nauticus educators that can include anything from explosive science demos to building underwater Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVS).

And don’t leave until you visit the Banana Pier Gift Shop, where great souvenirs are available for purchase to help you remember your day at Nauticus.

erthed at Nauticus, the Battleship Wisconsin (BB64) is one of four Iowa-class battleships – the largest and last battleship ever built by the U.S. Navy. On December 14, 2009, she was donated to the City of Norfolk for permanent use as a museum ship. In 2012, the Battleship Wisconsin

was listed in the Virginia Landmark Register. The ship is 887 feet long and weighs 45,000 tons; it was, literally, a “City at Sea” with a crew of nearly 3,000 men during her heyday in WWII and now visitors can experience and explore it firsthand.

Since assuming official stewardship, Nauticus has begun opening previously sealed off interior spaces of the battleship for the public to explore. Visitors can start “walking the decks of history” inside Nauticus with a six-minute

introductory film, Forward for Freedom, which brings the Wisconsin to life through the stories and commentary of those who served aboard. On board the ship, an exhibit located at the entrance to the Wardroom, For All Those in Uniform

Who Have Served, pays tribute to the armed forces, with an initial focus on Senator John W. Warner, who was instrumental in bringing the Battleship Wisconsin to Norfolk.

Walk onto the Wisconsin’s teak decks, explore her from bow to stern, and step into the ship’s Wardroom on self-guided tour. For an additional fee, guided tours are offered periodically throughout the day that take visitors deeper into the ship’s lower and upper decks, including the combat engagement center, navigation bridge, captain’s cabin, crew’s mess, galley, barber shop, ship store, and much more. Nauticus also offers special programming on the ship throughout the year, including “Haunted Ship” tours during the Halloween season.

The Battleship Wisconsin is located beside Nauticus at One Waterside Drive in downtown Norfolk. Admission to the ship is included in regular admission to Nauticus, excluding guided tours. The Battleship (weather permitting) is open daily Memorial Day through Labor Day 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Closed Monday. The remainder of the year, the Battleship is open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon – 5 p.m. Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas. Posing gracefully at street corners and storefronts, decorating banners and signs, and showing up in local art shops and galleries are Norfolk’s cultural icon, the mermaid.

Today, the mermaid symbol is synonymous with civic pride, and it exemplifies Norfolk’s appreciation of the local arts community, its dedication to the arts and maintaining Norfolk’s rapid pace of growth, economically, and culturally.

Mermaid statues began dotting downtown in 2000, shortly after the city branded the image of a young, free-spirited mermaid as its

official city symbol as part of the “Life, Celebrated Daily” campaign. The city had been undergoing major revitalization efforts, and the mermaid

drove home the idea a “New Norfolk” was being born. “We had some issues with the perception of Norfolk, both by those outside and inside,” says Bob

Batcher, the city’s Director of Communications. “We needed a new brand.”In November 1999, attorney and well-known Norfolk advocate Peter Decker, Jr.

introduced the idea of mermaid statues at a meeting with hundreds of business and civic leaders at Nauticus. Decker accredited his wife, Bess, with the Mermaids on Parade

idea—she was inspired by the Cows on Parade in Chicago after a recent trip. Starting in the summer of 2000, the street corners, parks, and storefronts of

The Story Behind Norfolk’s Public Art Project

Mermaid ParadeThe Norfolk began filling with mermaids. Business

and civic leaders jumped at the opportunity to have their own mermaids. “We just sort of let it go and the public embraced it,” says Batcher.

The mermaids are all designed and decorated by local artists, and many of them represent a theme related to their location. There are now mermaid trails, books, jewelry, sculptures, art—anything you can think of, the mermaids have inspired.

“The mermaids have really touched lives in a variety of ways,” says Batcher. “And they really show the value of public art.”
