• Scope sets the requirements for accreditation of contractors who install Sprayed Fire-Resistive Material or Intumescent Fire-Resistive Material.

• Establishes procedures for examining the knowledge level of the contractor’s Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) who is responsible for all aspects of SFRM and/or IFRM application.

• The accreditation seal is a registered mark of the NFCA. A contract between the NFCA and the contractor authorizes the contractor to use the accreditation seal.

• NFCA Accreditation shall be based •Verification that the contractor’s DRI has been actively involved in the installation of products for a minimum of two (2) years.

•Demonstration that the DRI has a demonstrated knowledge of all documents referenced in the CAP, the NFCA HAFK, field application procedures

•Evidenced by Passing written examination at 80%

3. Evidence of a signed certificate from each supplier being used by a contractor that the contractor’s DRI and field personnel have completed training in installation of supplier’s products. Certificate shall show

• Training date, • Names of contractor personnel in attendance, • Products for which training was provided. • Absent education/training for a specific product, the contractor shall

provide a certificate of training from a supplier providing an equivalent product technology.

• NFCA CAP Contractors employ at least one DRI • Contractors who conduct business at different physical locations using application crews working from that location shall have a DRI for each location.

• One DRI may be used for all business names operating from that location.

• If DRI ceases employment at CAP contractor or is unable to perform duties, • CAP contractor shall be given a grace period of four (4) months or the next SFRM / IFRM available NFCA education and exams to employ or qualify another DRI, without loss of accredited recognition.

1-Construction Document Requirements & Review

The Contractor shall review applicable construction documents (architectural drawings, structural drawings, project specifications), project scope, applicable published systems and designs to determine the type of Certified product or products to be used, the Fire Resistive Design specified for the project, to identify any inconsistencies, and to adequately define and understand all requirements.. It is the design professional’s responsibility to

communicate whether the project was designed using restrained or unrestrained criteria in the construction documents. Review Drawings & Specs Communicate Changes If no Specs, Communicate Scope to Customer

7-Training & Qualification of Staff

NFCA SFRM CAP DRI Requirements Verification that the contractor’s DRI has Passed the

NFCA SFRM Fireproofing Exam & employed at an NFCA Accredited Contractor.

The DRI shall receive specific training in appropriate areas and shall demonstrate his/her knowledge level by passing the initial Fireproofing Exam with a minimum score of 80%.

The DRI shall maintain CEU’s – 1 CEU = 10 hours UL QFCP – 6 CEU’s - 60 Hours, every 3 years. NFCA CAP – 30 hours, every 3 years.

1703.1.1 Independence. An approved agency shall be objective, competent and independent from the contractor responsible for the work being inspected. The agency shall also disclose possible conflicts of interest so that objectivity can be confirmed.[IBC 2015, 1703.1.2]

1703.1.2 Equipment. An approved agency shall have adequate equipment to perform required tests. The equipment shall be periodically calibrated.[IBC 2015, 1703.1.2]

1704.2.1 Special inspector qualifications. Prior to the start of construction, the approved agencies shall provide written documentation to the building official demonstrating his or her competence and relevant experience or training of the special inspectors who will perform the special inspections and tests during construction. Experience or training shall be considered relevant when the documented experience or training is related in complexity to the same type of special inspection or testing activities for projects of similar complexity and material qualities. • [BF] 1705.15 Sprayed fire-resistant materials. Special inspections and tests of sprayed fire-resistant materials applied to floor, roof and wall assemblies and structural members shall be performed in accordance with Sections 1705.15.1 through 1705.15.6. Special inspections shall be based on the fire-resistance design as designated in the approved construction documents. The tests set forth in this section shall be based on samplings from specific floor, roof and wall assemblies and structural members. Special inspections and tests shall be performed during construction with an additional visual inspection after the rough installation of electrical, automatic sprinkler, mechanical and plumbing systems and suspension systems for ceilings, and before concealment where applicable. The required sample size shall not exceed 110 percent of that specified by the referenced standards in Sections 1705.15.4.1 through 1705.15.4.9.
