All of us at NFS love NFC Obviously! but we particularly think that peer to peer NFC has a whole world of useful applications, companies quickly jump on the tag emu or reader mode choice but actually the way forward for their application may just be peer to peer.

Is Peer to Peer the real future for NFC?

Current status

• Despite being around for several years NFC is still in it’s infancy

• There are a significant number of applications using Reader mode, a relatively small number using card emulation mode but very few using Peer to peer

• Looking at payment/transit applications most use card emulation

• Even in a wallet

Moving forward

• As NFC evolves and matures more and more applications will be created

• what happens when I have lots of emulated cards?

e.g.

– Several payment cards

– A transit card

– A gym membership card

– An access card for the office

Lots of cards in my wallet

• As a user I would like them all to be ready to use anytime

• To be ‘visible’ at the same time they probably all need to share a common UID/PUPI

• To select one card out of many you use an Application Identifier (AID) – not all applications use AIDs

• Automatic selection means selecting them one at a time to see if the card exists in the wallet – slow!!!

• And.....all of the companies providing them really need to work together

So what happens today?

• Realistically we expect the user to select the right application before using it

• Some would argue that this is what users do now, they choose one plastic card out of their wallet and hand it to the cashier

• Surely, with a new technology don’t we want to make things better?..............

Is there a better way?

• We need a system where all the applications are available all the time

• Where the user can set preferences and priorities

Peer to peer

• Peer to peer mode is designed to support many applications from many providers

• Systems such as LLCP have a service discovery mode which means, for example, the POS terminal or subway turnstile can select the right application quickly

• Allows the user to present all their available ‘cards’ at the same time

• Much faster and easier to use

Benefits

• In scenarios where only one ‘card’ will work it is selected automatically

• In scenarios where one of several ‘cards’ will work the user can still choose

• The user can choose preferences/priorities and disable some applications

• Avoids delays caused by having the wrong application enabled
