Executive Overview

The Purpose of this report is to provide the North Florida Broadband Authority the details of the testing of the FT. White / Branford ILA POP point of presence. This POP is one of the four junction points where the NFBA’s network attaches back to the datacenters. Each POP in the NFBA’s network ring has two 1 Gigabit Ethernet handoffs at it. One Ethernet handoff that terminates at the Level3 Location in Tampa and One Ethernet handoff that terminates at the Level3 location in Orlando. Included in this report are several documents each showing performance statistics inside the network as well as the performance statistics from monitored devices at the Level3 datacenters and the Ft. White - Branford ILA. Carrier grade networks use common testing procedures to ensure interoperability among components and test points. These testing procedures were defined as IETF RFC2544 tests. Additional as part of interoperability testing is to make sure that during testing each component is behaving under load as well as traffic is staying in the current desired direction. Additional reports and information from the Solar Winds is included during said tests to provide a complete picture of testing as well as the RFC testing happening internally between network elements. This report contains the following:

1. Rapid Systems Ft. White – Branford Preliminary Test Report 2. EXFO.JPG - Screen shot of RFC2544 testing appliance 3. RFC2544_2011_09_06_10_46_49.pdf – RFC2544 Testing Report 4. Testing Methodology

The EXFO 860G Netblazer testing appliance was inserted into the switch port at the Tampa Occam 6450 aggregation switch at the datacenter. The remote test unit was inserted into the switch port of the Ft. White Branford Occam 6450 Aggregation switch. A full RFC2544 test was run within the network environment to create a baseline for traffic and ensure that the ILA circuit between Ft. White and Level3 Tampa is being tested.

1. This test is being performed inside of the Ethernet Protection System. 2. There is some additional overhead on every packet for each test since the EPS system uses

VLAN tags within the system.

EXFO.JPG

The RFC2544 test shows some very impressive numbers in throughput and latency of the network components. While the interface speed is 1 gigabit native since the RFC tests are being performed inside of the Ethernet Protection System architecture some additional overhead must be accounted for the VLAN tags associated with each frame.

Throughput As each frame size goes up, throughput increases because the proportionality of VLAN tags VS frame size. Overall system performance then must be measured from the Occam / Calix equipment as well which is included as part of the Solar Winds Reports.

Back to Back This test shows the buffering capability of the Occam / Calix 6450 aggregation switch at various packet sizes. It measures the maximum number of frames received at full line rate before a frame is lost. In carrier Ethernet networks, this measurement is quite useful as it validates the excess information rate (EIR) as defined in many SLAs.

Frame Loss The frame loss test measures the network’s response in overload conditions—a critical indicator of the network’s ability to support real-time applications in which a large amount of frame loss will rapidly degrade service quality.

Latency This test can also be configured to measure the round-trip time; i.e., the time required for a frame to travel from the originating device to the destination device and then back to the originating device. In this test the report is showing the round trip latency from Level3 Tampa, through the Occam / Calix aggregation devices through the remote tester and back to Level3 Tampa. Being this test is round trip point to point latency should be exactly half of this figure or about 4.3 ms to the Tampa Datacenter from the Ft. White ILA.

The complete RFC2544 report show additional information including configuration information on the test. If the tests were running in a native Ethernet environment we would not have to compensate for the additional packet overhead on each packet. The following illustration shows the additional overhead appended to the 802.3 ethernet packet.

Variance between theoretical performance and actual throughput is less than 1%. NOTE: The RFC2544 test was modified with a maximum rate Mbit/s of 954.545 for throughput, frame loss and latency tests to compensate for the overhead of the VLAN tags that would be invisible to the RFC2544 tester but not the physical equipment.

NFBA_RNG01_FTW_FL131_MSP001_GIG15_7

To properly test and collect all of the data as well as interoperability of components all RFC2544 and soon to be EtherSAM testing runs against a live Solar Winds testing system currently hosted by Rapid Systems. The Solar Winds system is part of the backend systems that service providers utilize for performance management, SLA reporting, alerting and other key functions of the service provider. At any time real time information can be pulled from the Solar Winds system as well as historical data. The information provided in these reports shows the historical data during the testing procedures and produces a wealth of information. The RNG01_FTW_FL131_MSP001_Gig15-7 report is an in-depth report on the physical interface during the RFC2544 testing process. The left column shows the “Percent Utilization” of the interface in real time with gages. Since the test was concluded at this time and this is a historical view of an RFC2544 test on the system interface utilization is low. Interface details and information from the last query from the collection server. Beneath the current interface information this indicates the port status, interface speeds and MTU settings. Underneath the interface details is the “List of interface Charts” which is a point and click interface to data for specific time ranges. This gives the support personnel easy access to the history of this interface over time. Next is the Interface Polling Details of the server. This shows how often the Solar Winds server goes out and checks the interface to collect data, when the next poll will be and when the next Rediscovery of the device is scheduled. Underneath the Polling Detail is the “Interface Errors and Discards”. This is critical to the service provider to be able to review and alert on this information as this is the area that interoperability between vendors ETHENET interfaces. Next is the Maximum traffic on the interface as seen on for the day Lastly event summary for this interface which would show any alerts, errors, or other issues that would be reported up into the Solar Winds server from the Occam / Calix 6450 aggregation switch.

The left column of the report shows the graphical information during the timespan of an RFC2544 test. The first and second graph show the interface during testing. These reports can be adjusted for about any timeframe and allow the granular level of looking at a single portion of the RFC2544 test as well as the current view which is over the duration of the test. The Min/Max/Average bps graphs show a healthy network during the testing process. The Total errors and discards graph shows that the interfaces are working properly and handling the data as designed. The Total Bytes Transferred graph shows how much information in Gigabytes during the testing process. Estimate form the graph shows the test moved more than a terabyte of information during the test. The last graph shows the Min/Max/Average packets In/Out of the interface. This provides a good representation of the different test and packets per second running through the interfaces.

NFBA_Ring01_FTW_FL131_MSP001

This Solar Winds report is very similar to the interface report but it is intended to show a larger overview of the Occam / Calix 6450 aggregation switch. The left side shows the Average Response Time and packet Loss to the Occam / Calix switch. Response times to SNMP over a load is a secondary function to moving data. That is to say the system will forward packets first and respond to information queries as a secondary action. The report also shows the average CPU utilization of the Occam / Calix switch. Clicking on the gauges allows the user to move from real-time to historical information. The report is very similar to the Interface report, with the exception that it’s reporting on the aggregation switch at the tower site so it includes additional information and graphs like operating temperature and event summary’s. This view gives the ability to drill down on specific interfaces as well as check the core operating system, space Since this tower site FL131 doesn’t have the Ceragon Microwaves installed it has not gone through the final integration and testing.

Conclusion

Initial testing of the Fort – White ILA pop has begun with extensive exercising of the circuits and level3 optical transport to Tampa. The current tests are well within operating margins of the NFBA network and show some impressive numbers for packets per second, throughput and latency. This testing and performance has been validated with industry standard RFC2544 testing and backed up by the parallel collection of data from the SNMP / Solar winds platform.
