Irsquom often asked by other Chamber executives how we can afford particularly in terms of staff-time the sheer number of events we hold every year In 2011 we will definitely have over 80 events and quite possibly close to 90 Our events range from membership meetings to our public affairs series and Chamber 101 to our business socials Itrsquos no wonder that we put on more events than any other Chamber in Minnesota

Is it worth it Absolutely It takes a huge amount of staff time to organize these events to promote them and to conduct them to our standards but events are also how we set ourselves apart from other business organizations Each time we bring in a speaker like Stanley Hubbard or Governor Mark Dayton when we provide a panel discussion on city finances or civility in politics we create the context for learning

and the opportunity to find common ground with Chamber members

Are events still necessary in an era characterized by the mobile phone the iPad and text messaging Let me ask this a different way Are you meeting new prospects building new business relationships and finding new ways to do business entirely online We believe strongly in having a robust and full-featured online presence but we canrsquot pretend that as a business community we donrsquot make the majority of our lasting contacts in person over a meal or over a beer
