Words from the Project Manager

Welcome to NextStep’11!

Once every year, the JIBS building is turned into a time machine where students can travel into the future. For a moment, we can look into a world that might become our reality in 5, or maybe 10 years from now.

Since we, in the NextStep ’11 team, like to travel into the future we thought, why not to have more of it? One crucial change for this year’s NextStep was the change in the mindset. We realized both that more is in fact more, and that less is also more.

First, NextStep is in essence a platform where students at JIBS meet their future employers – so, why only once a year? Although we did not manage to organize as many meetings between our fellow students at JIBS and their future em-ployers as we wished for initially. The important thing however, is the sense of acceptance, ap-preciation and urgency we gained from the re-sponse both from students and companies at-tending these events, and from many of the companies we shared our ideas with. We know that in this case, more is in fact more – we were right!

Second, what do we mean by “less is more”? We at JIBS have some unique features not found to the same extent in any other business school in

Sweden. We are truly Entrepreneurial in mind and International in spirit. All companies and or-ganizations are not a good fit for us. Therefore, we have strived as much

as possible for entering partnerships with compa-nies and organizations we do believe constitutes a good fit for the average JIBS student, partner-ships we hope will last for longer than one day in February. This, we believe, will increase both the quality of the career fair and the actual number of students finding their future employer at Next-Step. Less is more – more satisfaction!

We are very proud to present this year’s event to you, with a program that includes some very inspirational guest lecturers, a strong company portfolio, seminars and workshops, career guid-ance, and of course a classy banquet to wrap it up. This day is for you, for your future. In this catalogue, we provide you with all the informa-tion you need in order to make the most out of NextStep ’11. Make sure you plan for this day, and attend as many events as you can!

Finally, I would like to thank all of you that have participated in whatever form to make this day possible. We are many that have worked very hard with the preparations – our reward is seeing the enthusiasm in the eyes of the people attend-ing NextStep ’11.

Education: MSc and Doctoral student at ESOL researching sustainable entrepre-neurship in SMEs Why did you choose JIBS?A young business school with plenty of spirit: a good combination of quality and entrepreneurial “hunger”!

What is your previous job experience? Ice-cream man in a tax-dodging Italian firm in the UK (that’s why I teach business ethics?!). More recently: 7 years in a non-profit organisation in Mozambique: leader-ship/organisation & community development, HIV/AIDS education & care provision. 5 years as internal consultant working with Swedish churches as “change agent”.

What made you the winner of the pedagogical prize this year? Hard-working and enthusiastic colleagues and students. Also, I am conscious of the fact that our students have the capacity to radically change the world for the better if they put their minds to it. Some of our students understand this and ap preciate the challenge and our confidence in them.

Face to Face

8

Duncan Levinsohn Teacher of the year,

Ph.D. Student Business Administra-

I am a Ph.D. candidate and I am also involved in a couple of EU projects as an external evaluator.

What are your future plans? To engage with other scholars and practitioners in the field of sustainable entrepreneurship. To complete my PhD without turning into a really horrible Dad and husband.

How do you spend your spare time?? I have 6 kids, so I guess that answers the question. Innebandy (floorball) once a week, oily hands and a motorcycle in the summer. Mow the lawn when I have to (yeuch!)

What would you do if you were not working at the moment?I guess I would be pestering JIBS management and the Student Body, to try and find out why JIBS hasn’t yet signed up for the UN Programme for Responsible Management Education.

What was your dream job when you were a kid?A guerrilla believe it or not! I grew up in Colombia, and can still remember those dramatic paintings of Simon Bolivar on a charging horse with a sabre in his hand...

Hints & Tips

How to do to get the best out of nextstep clearly depends on what your aim for the career fair is. Do you want to get an internship for the next semester? Do you want to get a summerjob? Are you interested in the companies’ trainee programs? Do you want to work there within a year? Or do you just want to see what it can be like to work in a specific industry?

HOW TO GET THE BEST OUT

OF NEXTSTEP?!

PreparationsThere are 25 companies attending next-step’11, the first and the second floor will be loaded with company booths, representatives and students seeking for information. Choose a couple of companies that you would like to know more about, and start by visiting their booths. By being prepared you will prob-ably make a good impression, but the most important thing is to just be yourself. They are only people as well, right? Don’t hesitate to chat with them about everyday issues at their workplace as well, such as how it really is “out there” or if there are any dresscodes you are supposed to follow.

DresscodeSpeaking of dresscode, a hint is to dress clean and nice, even though you are not expected to put on your exam tux. But a pair of worn out sneakers and your baggy basket-ball shorts are not recommended if you want to make a good impression, at the end of the day, it is actually about your future.

At the boothAs mentioned earlier, be yourself. Still, you need to promote yourself to some extent to stand out of the masses. A firm handshake and a good spirit is a good way to start. Show that you are interested in them as an employer and not as a supplier of free pens and candy. Don’t forget to take their business card!

Hints & Tips

Guest lecturesThere will be three guest lectures held during the career fair, attend these! They will not only be good for your future career, they will be fun and interesting as well. (See how to to sign up for them on www.next-setp.se)

Use the knowledgeThere will be a lot of knowledge concentrated on the first and second floor of JIBS during nextstep, really, a lot of knowledge! Take advantage of it!

Use the careercenterIn the careercenter you get to talk to people more specifically about your future career. What to think about during a job interview, how to write a CV and a cover letter, what salaries to expect and what can unions do for you are just some of the questions you can get answers to.

Take a breakChatting to so many persons will really make you tired, chill out and grab a coffee when you feel you’re lacking of energy, it’s for free! When you start working you will take plenty of breaks, get used to it.

Attend the banquetDuring the banquet, you will get the op-portunity to talk to the representatives more informally, as always when a glass of wine or two are involved. Take this opportunity, it will not only be fun with a great three course meal, you also get to know how to chat with employers during special events. Buy your ticket today if you haven’t done it already, but hurry up - they are strictly limited!

Use the questionnaireOn the next page you can find some of the questions that you may ask to get a bet-ter knowledge of the companies and your chances at them. Take a look at them!

Eva-Maria BilleJIBS Student

Current Education: International Management, started 2010. Why did you choose JIBS?I was looking for Business programmes all over Europe, and the IM programme at JIBS – with its international profile, possibility for an extended period for exchange, room for specialization in number of electives, cooperation with the business envi-ronment – instantly attracted me to the school.

You have lived in China, tell us more about your experience there.I decided to go to China because I wanted to learn Chinese. After more than 3 years, I can speak and write Mandarin Chinese quite fluently, so that goal has been fulfilled – now I want to combine my language skills with a professional degree in business, as I think this will open a lot of doors for me in the future. I worked as an English teacher at Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School in Northern China for 2 here. There was much more learning by heart and yelling back studied answers to the teacher as a group, and much less group work and independent thinking. School hours were also incredibly long. I then moved to Xiamen in southern China, and started travelling all around China with Danish tour groups. This taught me a lot about conveying information, giving presentations and keeping a group of people happy. Apart from the school system, there’s a difference in openness – in Scandinavia we are quite closed and prefer the comfort of our own homes and close friends – in China everyone goes out a lot more, and everyone spends a lot of energy on relations with both close friends and acquaintances. Are you currently involved in any projects at school or outside the school?I was in the leadership team organizing International Day in November, and I also helped plan the Winter Banquet. Recently, I was elected the new head of JSA International Committee starting from the 1st of January 2010, so I’m very excited about that.

What are your future plans? I definitely want to take a masters degree when I finish here, hopefully in Australia, where my husband Josh is from.

How do you spend your spare time? I play the piano, sing, cook, eat food from different countries, and I enjoy doing Chinese tea ceremonies.

What was your dream job when you were a kid? When I was very young, I dreamed of becoming a flight attendant, because I really wanted to travel a lot – I still have the desire to travel, but now I do not only want to go places and fly home, I want to go to places, learn about the culture and

The Banquet

How to better end an intense day, full of activities, than with a relaxed three-course dinner to-gether with a good company in a stunning environment? The NextStep banquet at Elite Stora Hotellet has become a tradition at JIBS and is highly appreciated both by the students and com-pany representatives attending.

We start the evening with a mingle coupled with a glass of sparkling wine, so that we all get in the right mood. After the mingle we sit down for a delicious three-course dinner and continue our discussions at the dinner table. It will be possible for both students and company representatives to influence the seating arrangements so that interesting meetings during the day can continue at the banquet. From time to time, we in the NextStep crew will interrupt to remind you all that we do not want to get to formal – we will entertain you!

28

After the banquet, those who feel that they have not gotten enough of the wonderful day will proceed to Åt-taglas, where the party continues.

Make sure you buy your ticket for the banquet as soon as possible since there are a limited amount of tickets available. Tickets will be sold at PreStep, February 3rd. You can also e-mail us at [email protected] and book a ticket. Do it now – this is an event you do not want to miss! The ticket price is SEK 300, and the menu is included on the next page.

Face to FaceCurrent Education: Master of BA with a major in “Innovation & Business Creation” What is your previous job experience?2007-2008 Accountant at Metso Automation, Moscow.

Why did you get a trainee spot at Toyota, what are your most significant qualities? I might refer to commitment to what you are doing, constant learning and improvement, personal development and contribution to the company. Again when thinking globally, such trends, as globalization, multinational teams with their different perspectives and different thinking, definitely influence the decisions taken within the organisation. As a consequence, by employing people with different backgrounds and therefore differences in seeing the picture (business case), a company might obtain great benefits.

Did you contact Toyota during the Next-step fair and how did you approach them? I actually met the representatives from Toyota Material Handling Europe during the Next Step fair, where I basically was given a brief introduction to the company and got to know about the trainee program as well as its requirements. Almost at the last day of deadline for sending the applications, I put all my thoughts in writing a motivation letter together with preparing my CV and sent to the company. As a result, I got an invitation for the interview.

How did Jibs contributed to your career?Well, the first contribution was my education, which I mastered at JIBS, then of course, the Next step fair where I met theright people, and received contacts. And finally, I got a coaching session with a representative from a recruiting com-pany Jobla. This in a way gave tips on behaviour, competences and representativeness as well as facilitated the prepara-tion to the job interview.

What are your future plans? Being a trainee at a leading global corporation, such as TMHE gives a great opportunity to move within the company, to work at different functions, and ultimately get the whole perspective of how the working processes are managed and organised. Therefore, my future plans are based on finding a function where I with all my experience and competences can fit best and where I can contribute the most and bring value to the company.

How do you spend your spare time? If not travelling, then working out, or doing something that brings me satisfaction, fun and pleasure.

Current education: International Management ‘13.

Why did you choose JIBS?I was looking for a university, which focused on international interaction with the business life as well as other universities and students. I highly believed that JIBS were capable of bring these together and develop the studies to its maximum.

What is your previous job experience? Can you name some of your internships and what duties did you have there?I have been working within Ericsson AB for the last 5 years now. I started of as a produc-tion operator, but got the opportunity to take part in a huge project consisting of a new production line. This included daily interaction and communication with the commission-ing team and later on education of the production engineers and production operators. The last 3 years I’ve been working under a department called Operational Excellence mainly focusingon cost reductions and management improvements for supply. During

teaching communications, continuous improvements and Lean production for managers, employees and high school students in different levels.

Nowadays through my business I also have a close relationship with Sweden’s now biggest music festival. We deliver a business analyse to help them focus on value for their customers. Last summer our goal was to measure the behaviour of visitors, to map why and how they moved in the festival area. This provided the festival with important information how do distribute the workforce during different periods of the festival. For this event my company developed a GPS program for mobile phones, which was used by a selected visitors and a few functionaries.

How do you feel about taking on the duty as Head of internal affairs and what will you do?Everything we do that can combine the business life to academic studies helps for further development for every individual. I’m exited to have gotten this opportunity to maintain and develop the projects within JSA. My former position was focused on project management and I’m confident that I can bring inspiration and knowledge to take it to the next step. I want to develop the projects within JSA to become the corner stones in student’s experience integration with reality outside uni-versity studies. Students should have the opportunity to take part in well-developed projects to apply their knowledge and competence into something creative.

What are your future plans? My plans from now on are firstly to finish of my studies and perform due to my own expectations. I really look forward to the study abroad semesters and realize that every day is just running by and January 2012 soon is here.

How do you spend your spare time?I have a great interest in music and I try to bring it into everything I do. Ever since the beginning of middle school, music has been my way of relaxing and to free my mind. In the winter I dig out my snowboard and go to the ski slopes for a nice ride and in the summers I try to go out to the golf course and play a few rounds or go out with our boat to a shore not to far away to enjoy the warmth of the Swedish summer.

What was your dream job when you were a kid?At first I was certain to become a veterinary or a doctor, sadly I changed my mind quite a lot since. I love working with people and that was one of the reason why I was interested in helping others.

Julius ChangJIBS student

Education: Currently studying Master in Financial Economics (Civilekonom) Why did you choose JIBS?Because it is a school with an international environment with students from all over the world as well as it holds an entrepreneurial spirit, nor the less the great opportu-nity for students to go abroad to study at some of it’s many partner universities.

Why did you choose the “Civilekonom” programm?I believe it is a really good four-year program, since the first two years consists of basic courses in a variety of different subjects linked to business and economics. You get to learn a bit of accounting, marketing, ethics, Swedish law, statistics, finance and economics. You have the opportunity to spend your third year abroad, which I also did and the same goes for the majority of the students in my class. I am sure that the experience that I have gained by living in a different culture will be extremely valuable for me in the future, regardless of the situation. Having seen things from another perspective that you are otherwise are used to and comfortable with. This is something I truly can recommend everyone to do, at least once in their lifetime!

What is your previous job experience? For what companies have you worked before and what were your duties?

60

Like many newly graduated from high school in Sweden, I took a year off before continuing my studies. My first job was as a salesperson for 3 (Hutchinson Whampoa), were I was promoting 3’s variety of mobile services on different outdoor events, as well as a telemarketer and a sales clerk in store. Later on I changed job since I had set my time for working limited to one year and I wanted to earn as much money as possible during this time. So I started working at Volvo Cars as an assembly line worker, nightshift. It was a really hard and hectic work, but lovely co-workers (and good salary!) made the time go very fast and of course the valuable experience I gained: You can not earn money without sacrificing time, hard work and some sweat to it.

What are your future plans?First off is to finish NextStep ’11 by having a lovely banquet! Next up is my master thesis and then graduation this summer. For the fall I’m planning to return to Taiwan for a year and study Mandarin. Right now the plan is to stay in Asia for at least a couple of years after the intensive language studies. The reasons are simple - I love the culture and the people as well as having my roots in the Far East, make this to an inevitable journey for me. However only time can tell the outcome, right?

How do you spend your spare time?Hanging out with friends, trading, watching movies or TV-series, go to the gym or any other team sport activity.

What was your dream job when you were a kid?To become a scientist, to be able to help other people!

Current Education: Master in Strategic Entrepreneurship Why did you choose JIBS? IInternational profile

Why did you choose the “Strategic Entrepreneurship” programme? The programme is very entrepreneurial based which enables students to think creatively and to be innovative with course work. Also much of the course work is structured around understanding the fundamentals and processes with regards to starting a business. This knowledge I feel will greatly benefit myself down the track when I decide to pursue a busi-ness idea.

What is your previous job experience? For what companies have you worked before and what were your duties?James Bell

JIBS student Executive Sales Assistant. WIN NBN is the world’s largest regional television supplier with commercial coverage throughout regional outback Australia. Such duties involved client

management, programme ratings analysis, campaign management and strategic commercial placement.

Have you worked on any business idea while studying here? What was the idea? Who did you cooperate with in order to real-ize the idea?Throughout the first quarter of semester one (2010), myself and another student have been working on a business idea that was developed through one of our earlier courses. Our concept is to develop a personalised dental protection service offering custom made mouthguards for all amateur and professional sports players. Essentially, our goal is to cut out the need for the dentist and work closely with the dental labs and technicians who actually produce the mouthguards. We want to go to the customer, instead of the customer going to the dentist. While it has been a balance between studies and meetings we con-tinue to develop the idea day by day. Tobias Dahlberg from the Science Park has been very helpful. He has assisted us with understanding the Swedish business laws and regulations, research, suggesting appropriate strategies and speaking to fellow peers about possible approaches.

What are your future plans? After completing my master’s I plan on gaining employment within the EU and beginning my business career within the inter-national marketing field. While I have strong ties to return home, I am very excited to continue living within Europe and to see what potential job opportunities may arise.

How do you spend your spare time?My spare time away from the studies consists of catching up with friends, heading to the gym and enjoying a movie or docu-mentary.

Ex-JIBS Student,

quick q&a

72

Current education: I have graduated IT management master program at JIBS in June 2010. I also have a bachelor in Marketing and a master in BA from the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova in 2007 and 2008.What is your previous job experience?I don’t have much job experience since I was continuously studying all my life. My most signifi-cant job experiences are a couple of internships during my bachelor studies and a student job in USA in 2006 (via Work & Travel program). My master thesis project at JIBS also included a case study of two Swedish based companies, which I think can also be considered as sort of job experience. Why did you get a trainee spot at Toyota, what are your most significant qualities? It’s hard to answer this question but in general I think that good analytical capabilities, self dis-cipline, being well organized, good communication skills, knowledge & competence, fluency in several foreign languages and a personal charisma are qualities that everyone should work on. Did you contact Toyota during the Next-step fair and how did you approach them?Yes, I did contact Toyota Material Handling Europe during the job fair. It was actually one of the companies that draw my attention when I was reading the Next-Step brochure, as it is quite international and big. The description of the trainee program also seemed quite interesting for I approached their stand and talked to the representatives, who explained in details the trainee program and its opportunities and

benefits. In the end they provided me with a promo brochure with an email where later on I sent my CV together with a cover letter and grades. How did Jibs contributed to your career? So far JIBS had a very positive impact on my career. Not only JIBS provided me with high quality education but also gave the opportunity to get directly in touch with my future employer and for both I’m very grateful to JIBS! In general I think that university job fairs represent a very good opportunity for students who are graduating and are looking for their future employer. Companies represented at job fairs are normally interested in hiring students from that specific university, so in the end that can give you an extra stimulus to prepare a good application and eventually be called for an interview. What are your future plans?Right now I do not have big plans for future and for the next couple of years I would like to gain some work experience via my trainee position and develop both personally and professionally. There are of course some “big” dreams, but I would prefer not

to share them. How do you spend your spare time?I don’t have any exotic hobby. Normally, I try to stay in touch with my friends and relatives, occasionally read interesting books, watch interesting movies and documentaries, listen to good music, travel if I have any good occasion, practice sports, play some

chess etc. What was your dream job when you were a kid? It’s hard to say. I didn’t have any specific dream job in my mind at that time. What I always wanted is to have an interesting job

Bachelor Programs

Business Information SystemsThe program focuses on the role of IT in business renewal and entrepreneurial development, and gives the basics for designing and linking business pro-cesses and information systems. You will learn how to create new business opportunities through the use of IT, how information systems can be used to improve corporate and customer relations, and how to enhance productivity and quality in business pro-cesses. You will also have the opportunity to do an internship, either in Sweden or internationally.

International Economics and PolicyWithin the International Economics and Policy Pro-gram, you will learn how to use economic theory to assess political and economic events and to under-stand the underlying mechanisms, at the micro and macro level. We offer two tracks leading to a bach-elor degree with economics as a major:• Financial and Economic Analysis• International Economics and Development

International ManagementThe International Management programme offers an education with an international and business renew-al focus. The programme trains you in a variety of widely useful skills for an international working career, and involves you in thinking critically about organi-zations and organizationalphenomena throughout your studies. As a student you will be taking part in problem-based learning, an educational method that combines theory and practice to stimulate learning. Already during the first semester, you will get the

chance to establish direct connections with an enter-prise through our host company programme.

Words from JSA

JSA, JIBS Student Association, want to take the opportunity and thank the whole nextstep crew for making this career fair something that the whole school can be proud over. We are really thankful for the tremendous amount of work you all have put in to this project.

nextstep is one project among a lot of things that JSA does, we have a large portfolio of services and arrangements that we are really proud of being able to provide to you as a student at JIBS.

The closest big event arranged by JSA, that is coming up is:

Spring Inspiration

The largest fashion show in Jönköping, with the latest fashion and amazing dance perfor-mances. After this great event everyone gath-ers, both models dancers and students the “it” after party of the year.

Except from these we are also arranging The Entrepreneurship Day, theme days, Business Golf and of course we cannot forget about our Sexkreation crew, who are arranging the Kick –off week, sittings and parties at Akademien.

The JSA Board

As President I have the executive responsibility within the JIBS Student Association. My main task is to su-pervise and delegate work done within and by the as-sociation to ensure that we reach our objectives. The JSA has a large influence both inside and outside of JIBS. As President of the JSA I represent the students in bodies such as the Board of Directors at JIBS, as well as the Council of Undergraduate and Master Ed-ucation. For 2011 the cooperation between the JSA and the Student Union also means that I will handle issues regarding student housing in Jönköping for the Student Union. I have regular meetings with the JIBS management and I keep close contact with the Dean.

Alexander WennloPresident of JSA

I am the second in command of the association. I assist the President in daily managing of the JSA and I insure the legal quality of all the contracts and statues within the association. I am also the main contact between the JSA and the Student Union.

As the treasurer of JSA, it is my responsibility to handle the accounting and financial control within the association and its wide range of events and projects. Having studied econom-ics for some years as well as gained work ex-perience within the field of banking, adminis-tration and internal control, this is what I do best. My day is complete when the question marks have been straightened out and there are no red figures on the bottom line.

Fredrik UpåkerTreasurer of JSA

I’m responsible for all projects within the JSA, like nextstep for example. I recruit project leaders and throughout the proj-ects I supervice and make sure everything runs smoothly. This year the main focus for me is to build on the success of last year’s projects for further improvement

The main responsibility of the international committee is to oversee and encourage the integration between the Swedish and the many international students at JIBS. Among other things, the international committee arranges the colourful cultural event International Day every semester, where students from different coun-tries show their culture for all to enjoy.

Eva BilleHead of International Committee

My goal is to further connect the JSA with the business society. Together with the external affairs committee I keep close contact with our current sponsors whilst continuously working on potential new partnerships. The main focus of the Social Committee is the students. The Committee, Sexkreation, works on making their stay here as pleasant and fun as pos-sible. We arrange all kind of social events and after school activities. The biggest event is the Kick-off week. For every year the event gets bigger and the interaction between the schools at Jönköping Uni-versity increase. The work of making the students start and stay here as memorable as possible is always on-going.

David HammarstrandHead of Social Committee

Students must be aware of what is organized by JSA, what they can get as a JSA member and how they can engage themselves in dif-ferent activities. The Marketing Committee is the link between the JSA Board and the JSA Members. Getting more students involved and raising interest for our projects will be my main goal for the year.

Committee (JIBS UNITED)

Matilda JohanssonHead of Quality Committee

During my year as a member of the JSA Board my committee will focus on improving the course evaluation system, enhance the legal security for all students at JIBS as well as helping the school receive the accreditations they are currently work-ing on.In addition to this, we will also focus on com-municating the rules and regulations Jönköping International Business School has to operate by. It is important for us that as many students as pos-sible know what to expect from their teachers, but also; knowing what to expect also means knowing what educational quality to demand!

The JSA Communication Committee is in charge with the school’s magazine, JIBS United (formerly known as Ju-nited). This magazine and our work within the committee are dedicated to each JIBSer, current or former. We want to raise the voice of JIBS and inspire our readers by the articles and people involved, specially selected for each issue. We believe that JIBS reality is one that needs to be shared, to you and with you! Contact the JSA office in case you have any interesting ideas/projects you would like to write about. We are open-minded people, so don’t hesitate to share your thoughts!

Page 88: NextStep '11 Catalogue

The ultimate aim of NextStep is to help in creating a bet-ter future, for everyone involved. Think about it, a better future for the students, a better future for the employ-ers, a better future for JIBS. If this idea sounds appeal-ing to you, then you should keep reading. In that case you might be the right person to become the next project manager, account manager, or administration coordina-tor for NextStep ’12.

JIBS Alumni Association

The JIBS Alumni Association (JAA) is the gateway to a professional online community for graduates of Jönköping International Business School. Through the JAA network, alumni have an opportunity to maintain friendships with former classmates, build new relationships with other alumni and be informed about current news and activities at JIBS. Alumni are regularly invited to engagement sessions that often lead to rewarding professional connections and the alumni career services advertise positions relevant to our graduates. Today, the network has over 2000 active members. With over 10,000 JIBS graduates, the Association plans to actively recruit new members.

JAA Network
