Dear KMS Families,

Well ... another great school year is in the books. This final week has been a whirlwind of activities as we celebrated the achievements of our students and celebrated the last few moments we had together as teachers and students.

Our students had a great time at the pool on Monday even though the temperature was slightly chilly. We held our final student of the month breakfast on Tuesday morning which marked the end of a great year of recognizing our wonderful students for their citizenship, respectfulness, and leadership.

Finally on Wednesday we kicked the final day off with our All A's Celebration honoring the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who earned all A's for the entire school year. We are especially proud of this group of students who work hard throughout the year and have a passion for learning. Later Wednesday morning we handed out some special awards to our 8th grade class. The Optimist Award recipients were Ben Greeson and Reilly Herold. The Archie Griffin Award recipients were Vivian Strange and Trent Nauman. Finally, the Nick Crusse Award recipients were Kate Stone and Wes McCallister.

We continued our day of celebration with the student talent show, a KMS school-year in review video and finally the annual staff band performance who rocked the house. At the end of the day, the 6th and 7th grade students along with the staff at KMS clapped-out the 8th graders as they left school for the final time and officially began their journey through high school. We wish all of our 8th grade students the best of luck and future success. We will miss you!

Have a great summer - see you on August 8th for Cardinal Flight!

8th Grade Awards Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award To recognize one outstanding male and female athlete who each exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship. Some of these ideals and qualities, which Mr. Griffin himself displays, are integrity, leadership, a positive attitude, academic discipline, humility and volunteerism. The two students were nominated by staff members who believe they exemplify these characteristics.

Vivian Strange & Trent Nauman The Optimist Award This award is given to two students (one male and one female) for their outstanding contribution to good citizenship. The recipients of this award should exemplify the well-rounded student by working to their full potential both academically and socially. This can be demonstrated through academic achievement, school activities, and extracurricular activities such as youth organizations or volunteer work. These two students were nominated by staff members who believe they exemplify these characteristics.

Nick Crusse Award Nick Crusse, who was a much-loved student who tragically passed away during the summer between his sophomore and junior years at Thomas. Nick was an energetic, fun-loving young man who was a friend to everyone who knew him. He was always in high spirits and was a genuinely all-around good person. He was someone who could light up a room and someone that everyone enjoyed being around, regardless of which social group they belonged to. The two students who are being honored with the Nick Crusse Award were nominated by staff members who believe that they embody Nick's passion for life.

Kate Stone & Wes McCallister Perfect Attendance These three students maintained perfect attendance during both 7th grade and 8th grade.

Trip to Dewey’s Pizza!

On Monday, all of the boys from the SCLC had the opportunity to work with the Dewey's staff to create their own pizzas. The Dewey's Pizza School started at 9 am, before they traditionally open, and the boys were paired up in teams to work together to make their pizzas. Each student got to top half of a pizza with whatever they liked. The Dewey's staff gave us information on how their pizzas are made, and how their dough is different from traditional pizza dough; it's a bit sweeter. The students learned what Dewey's puts in their dough: yeast, flour, sugar, salt, olive oil, and water, they got to handle the pizza dough, and saw how the staff has learned how to toss their dough. The Dewey's staff was INCREDIBLE in working with our students - they asked engaging questions, gave clear and repeated directions, got each student to participate in a way they were comfortable, and worked with each student individually. While our pizzas were cooking, the manager Darren gave the students a lesson on the history of pizza (where pizza originated, what areas of the world are famous for pizza, etc.), and what it takes to run a successful business (costs that go in to paying employees, maintaining the restaurant, how many pizzas they typically sell on a weekend, their most popular pizzas, etc.). The students were engaged and asked questions by the staff, and the boys had the opportunity to ask questions as well. I cannot stress enough how AWESOME the entire Dewey's staff was with accommodating our students, engaging our boys in conversation, and allowing us to come in and work with them. We also had great feedback from the boys (beyond saying how they can't wait to eat their pizzas!): some students expressed that they would love to come back with their families to introduce them to Darren and that they would like to work at Dewey's when they get older. Each student got a certificate upon completion of the pizza school and a coupon for a free small pizza at their next visit. Dewey's went ABOVE AND BEYOND any expectations we had, and gave back to the community. When we went to pay for the pizzas from the school, Dewey's gave us all the pizzas free of charge; they wouldn't even take a tip! This was an INCREDIBLE experience for our students and we couldn't be more appreciative of Dewey's for giving back in this way. Please GO SUPPORT Dewey's!!! :) -Necia, Kyle, Zack, Scott, Theresa, & Charity

Contact Dr. Neil Gupta at [email protected]

News from the lunchroom: During the summer, student meal balances will roll to the next school year. All eighth grade parents whose student has a negative meal balance will receive notification from the food service department that money is owed. Please deposit funds into your students’ meal account. There is NO charging for meals or a la carte items at either high school.
