We don’t need to be a priest or religious or to withdraw from ordinary life to spend time in prayer. We can be holy by living our lives with love. Holiness can grow from small gestures: by loving and caring for our spouse; by laboring with integrity and skill; by refusing to speak ill of others; by speaking a kind word to others; by asking: Are you O.K.? by listening with patience to our children and grandchildren. Holiness is charity lived to the full, Pope Francis says. We can all show holiness in our families and communities on a daily basis.

Thought for the Week

Parents are the real teachers of the young.

Demonstrating their unconditional love for

their children and, discussing important

issues before problems arise, might prepare kids to face the real world without being sucked in by their

peers.

SAFETY REMINDER: EMERGENCY EVACUATION

In the event of an Emergency which necessitates the evacuation of the Church the Workplace Safety Officer (Spencer Adamson) or the Commentator for the Mass will announce that the Church (or Parish Hall) MUST be evacuated. Those present are required to exit the space via the nearest exit, provided it is safe to do so.

Special attention must be given to assisting the frail and elderly and those who are challenged with mobility issues.

After vacating the Church or Parish Hall parishioners are required to assemble on the lawn area adjacent to the St. Joseph’s School Uniform Shop. No person is to re-enter the building until an announcement has been made that it is safe to do so.

In the near future D-latch door handles will be installed in the Church and Parish Hall so that the Parish is compliant with legislative requirements.

CWL VICARIATE GATHERING

In his homily at the CWL Mass Fr. Steve shared the following:

Jesus sees the crowd present in our Church this morning with all our hopes and our hurts. As a Church we live in challenging and confronting times. So much harm and hurt has been done to young and vulnerable lives by people who had a sacred duty to protect the dignity and safety of those entrusted by God and their families to our care. The abuse of the young and the vulnerable is a horrific crime and a betrayal of everything that the Church stands for. The damage to victims and survivors and their family and friends often lasts a lifetime and robs people of the joy and happiness of a life lived in communion with Jesus Christ.

In such an environment of mistrust and betrayal one can understand why people might walk away from the Catholic Church. But I think we are being called not to throw in the towel but to turn ever more deeply to the person of Jesus Christ, and to trust Him to lead us and to lead our Church to live and proclaim our faith ever more deeply and authentically.

The Catholic Women’s League of our Diocese and Catholic women more broadly can be catalysts and leaders in this mission to live and proclaim our faith ever more deeply and authentically. So many of you are present at daily Mass in the Parishes of the Eyre Peninsula and our Diocese. Individually and at your meetings you can be powerhouses of prayer for the victims and survivors of abuse and their families and for our Church, its faithful and loyal Catholics, its bishops, priests and religious as we embrace anew the call of Jesus to be Good News for the poor and a safe haven and a place of healing and hope for the broken and betrayed.

In recent years the Catholic Women’s League in Australia and locally in South Australia have been strong and committed advocates for people and causes close to the heart of Jesus. You have championed the sacredness of life in all its stages and have advocated for the drug-dependent, victims of domestic violence and the homeless. Perhaps you are now being called by Jesus to be advocates for the victims and survivors of abuse. Certainly, you have an important vocation to continue to tell the stories of faith-filled women (and men) who have said yes to Jesus and present a Church and a faith that is reconciled, renewed, relevant and relational. For this is the only kind of faith and Church that our young will embrace and encounter the Risen Lord.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that our Vicariate Gathering is occurring this year in NAIDOC Week. This year’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday and NAIDOC Week have adopted the theme: Because of her, we can. It celebrates the unique and irreplaceable contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Women in bringing hope, holiness, healing and wholeness to family and community. The same theme can apply to the women of our Church and Diocese: Because of you, we can! We can be a Church that is more prayerful, holier, happier and more human.

Today, we acknowledge and thank the Catholic Women of Eyre Peninsula and our Diocese and the Catholic Women’s Leagues of Cummins and Port Lincoln for their presence, prayers and the significant contribution they make to keeping the flame of faith alive in our local and Diocesan Church. We pray for the deceased members of the Catholic Women’s League and we entrust the mission and ministry of the Catholic Women’s League to the prayerful intercession of Our Lady, Help of Christians, St. Mary of the Cross and St. Maria Goretti. And as we gather this morning in prayer as the local church of Eyre Peninsula we pray: Be our Shepherd, Lord, and lead us confidently and courageously in these confronting and challenging times.

Does God always answer prayer, the Cardinal was asked. ‘Yes’ he said “and sometimes the answer is ‘no’. (Alistair Cooke)
