LECTIO DIVINA REFLECTION— ORDER OF CARMALITES

To those who had the courage to believe in the Good News and who are baptized, Jesus promises the following signs: they will cast out devils, they will speak new languages, they will pick up snakes in their hands and be unharmed if they drink deadly poison, and they will lay their hands on the sick who will recover. This happens even today. To cast out devils is to fight against the force of evil which destroys life. The life of many people improves because they entered into the communi-ty and have begun to live the Good News of the presence of God in their life. - to speak new languages: it means to begin to communicate with others in a new way. Sometimes we meet a person whom we have never seen before, and we care deeply for them and their situation, even though we don't know them well. This happens because we speak the same language, the language of love. - deadly poison will not harm them: there are many things that poison life together in community. There is gossip which destroys the relationship between persons. The one who lives in the presence of God does not participate in these things and is able to not be disturbed by this terrible poison. - they cure the sick. Wherever there is a clear and lively knowledge of God’s presence, there is also a special care given to the excluded and marginalized, especially the sick. What can help cure is that the person feels accepted and loved.

A BLESSED MOTHER’S DAY TO ALL OUR MOTHERS AND GRANDMOTHERS

Mother’s Day celebrates the love that gave us life and the life that taught us how to love. Today we honour and pray for our mothers and grandmothers, living and de-ceased, and for all who radiate a mother’s love in our lives. We thank them for their unconditional love, the sacrifices they’ve made for us and the values they have taught us.

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated on Sunday 3rd June and First Holy Communion on Sunday 17th June. We prayerfully remember our young parishioners as they approach these significant spiritual celebrations in their lives. It was a joy to be a part of the First Holy Communion Retreat day on Friday and to be immersed in the excitement the students displayed as they prepare for their great day.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL

The St. Mary of the Angels’ Parish Pastoral Council will meet on Tuesday 29th May in the Presbytery commencing at 7.00p.m. Sandra Hewson, Mark Hopkins and Diana Mislov are continuing as members of the Council. We are most grateful to: Jack Bourke, Carmel Goodwin, Michael Makowiecki, Brenton Mortimer, Sue Olsen and Cathie Story for generously agreeing to serve on the Council.

Our Parish is also most grateful to retiring Council members Spencer Adamson, Janessa Dorward, Mark Mangabat, David Williams and Monica Woods for their sterling service over many years.

The Council meeting on Tuesday 29th May will be preceded by a Shared Tea at 6.00p.m. for new and retiring Councillors to express our gratitude to those who are retiring and to welcome the newcomers.

Bishop Greg will commission our new Parish Pastoral Council and the other Parish Teams during the Confirmation Mass on Sunday 3rd June 2018.

ADVANCE NOTICE

Jubilarian Celebration will be held in Port Lincoln this year on Friday 1st June, 6.00pm Mass celebrated by Bishop Greg O’Kelly. This jubilee recognises service of 25 years or more at St Joseph’s School.

The Catholic Women’s League are holding their Annual Vicariate Meeting in Port Lincoln on Tuesday 10th July commencing with Mass at 9.30a.m. The guest speaker for the occasion will be Dr. Danielle Crosby, a local GP who will share a little of her story and address the important issue of putting in place an Advanced Care Directive. All welcome! It would be great to see a strong representation from the Parish. Dr. Crosby will address the gathering at 1.00p.m. and parishioners are welcome to be present for this part of the day. Venue: Parish Hall.

PENTECOST SUNDAY: FLIGHT OF THE KITES ECUMENICAL GATHERING

Everyone is invited to join Christians from our Community for a Combined Church Gathering NEXT SUNDAY (20th May) at Centenary Oval commencing at 12.30p.m. A BBQ lunch provided. Fun for the whole family … music, God’s Word and Kite Flying. All welcome. Bring your kites!

PRAYING THE ROSARY– MAY, MONTH OF MARY

Praying the rosary together, as a family, is very beautiful and a source of great strength! And also praying for one another! The husband for his wife, the wife for her husband, both together for their children, the children for their grandparents….. praying for each other. PLENARY COUNCIL

What are some of the Objectives of the Plenary Council?

These are hard times for the Church but also exciting times. The Plenary Council is an opportunity for all Catholics to embark on a journey. In essence it is a journey of hope. At its heart is the invitation to listen. Pope Francis has presented the universal Church with a new vision to be a listening Church. We are being called to listen:

to the voice of God and discover where God is present;

to women in the Church (The Church hasn’t done this well in the past);

to young voices and encourage and nurture a life-giving presence of the young in the life of the Church;

to those no longer active in the practice of their faith;

to and engage with those who are not Catholic and with other faith traditions;

to secular society.

Attentive and respectful listening is the catalyst for an openness to new ways of living our faith in the modern world and meeting the challenges that confront us.
