All of us, members of our beloved “Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish” are now involved in a major effort to raise $800,000 for an urgent repair of our Church’s tower, which is seriously damaged. We invite everyone in our Parish community to please make a pledge for this campaign now by calling Ms. Faria Sookdeo at the Rectory: 718-739-0241. The name of this Capital Campaign is “Generations of Faith” because we belong to an uninterrupted chain of generations of people and families that have been witnessing the Catholic faith in our Parish since its foundation, 130 years ago. That’s why, in addition to the tower repair, we will dedicate some of the funds we raise to help the Senior Priests of our diocese (who need our helping hand) and the youth, who are getting ready to keep the flame of faith alive in our Parish after our departure. JESUS TEACHES US HOW TO CONFRONT THE DEVIL IN ORDER
TO PREVAIL AGAINST HIM
My dear sisters and brothers,
BE BLESSED BY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! Today I would like to share with you the reflections of Friar Martin R. Ganeri, O.P. (England, Great Britain), about the message of the Word of God on this Sunday:
Can you remember the last time you struggled to successfully complete a task at home, at work, or at school? Do you remember the relief that you felt when it was done, particularly to the satisfaction of a spouse, parent, boss, or teacher? The hours of work, perhaps accompanied by an excess of anxiety and stress, yielded a positive outcome. Such a process can energize a person to begin again, renewed, prepared to take on future challenges. Author Malcolm Gladwell in his book David and Goliath writes about various seeming afflictions that may in fact have significantly contributed to the success of the recipients of those afflictions. In today’s readings we are reminded that perseverance yields fruits and we as Christians are called upon to persevere, not alone, but with God. Lent invites us to a greater intimacy with God that we might more acutely recognize His presence in our lives as we persevere. Lent is a time that tests us. We are asked to put energy into becoming more faithful to all the Jesus asks of us. We show that energy–to ourselves, not to others–by taking up some small practices that will help us remember that we belong to the Lord and rely on His strength. We do not fast and pray and do penance so that others can admire us. No, we fast and pray and do penance so that we can move from the slavery of sin to the freedom of grace, the freedom of living in the power of Jesus Christ. Fasting and praying require perseverance, as exemplified by the early Hebrews who persevered against great odds, and with and through God they were delivered from their sufferings. The Book of Deuteronomy prepares us to understand the perseverance required to be free from slavery. American abolitionist Frederick Douglass characterized slavery as much more than the removal of human rights, but the expungement of humanity of itself. The early Hebrews felt the physical distresses of slavery, but for Christians the far baser state is slavery to sin. The Hebrews persevered, and God answered their calls for help. The Letter to the Romans, gives us the way in which we can persevere from slavery to freedom. The way in which we
can resist temptation is clearly revealed: everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. To pray in the name of Jesus is to invoke him as Savior, to welcome him, and carry on a dialogue with him. How much easier it is to persevere through our difficulties with Jesus than without him! And, Jesus did not persevere alone, either. The temptations of Christ in the desert are those of all human beings: the urge to live by our desires and needs rather than by the Word of God, the presumption that God will save us even if we do nothing and the temptation to want power and dominion over others. The early Christians came to identify seven major sins–that means seven major ways of leaving the path of the Lord: pride, anger, lust, greed, envy, gluttony and spiritual laziness. We are exhorted to overcome these seven major sins and return to the path of the Lord. It will not happen in one day or forty days; it will take a lifetime of perseverance to cling to the path of the Lord. We pray that by His mercy we will experience the ultimate goal of Christian life which is salvation. Lent is a time of struggle for each of us with whatever pulls us off the path of the Lord. This First Sunday of Lent is a time to reflect on the Lord Jesus and His struggle with the devil and for us to resolve to struggle against the devil and all evil in our own lives (…). JESÚS NOS ENSEÑA CÓMO ENFRENTAR
AL DIABLO PARA VENCERLO
Mis queridas hermanas y mis queridos hermanos:
¡QUE EL SEÑOR TE BENDIGA! Hoy vamos a compartir las reflexiones de Fray Miguel de Burgos Núñez, O.P. (España), sobre el mensaje de la Palabra de Dios en este Domingo:
En este primer domingo de Cuaresma nos encontramos, primeramente, con una lectura muy significativa, porque es uno de los textos más primitivos del Antiguo Testamento. En esa lectura se nos da un “confesión de fe”, lo que el pueblo creía y repetía frecuentemente: que ellos son descendientes de un arameo errante, un hombre oriental, nuestro padre Abrahán, que lo dejó todo por el Dios que se acercó a los hombres para reconducir la historia de la humanidad, que había perdido su rumbo. La confesión de fe, aparentemente, es pobre, porque es un fórmula y como tal no ofrece detalles; pero tiene la fuerza de la experiencia vital, de los que consideran que su vida tiene una orientación determinada y determinante. El pueblo descendiente de Abrahán ha pasado por numerosas vicisitudes hasta ser un pueblo, una nación. La segunda lectura es muy expresiva, es confesión de fe también, pero va mucho más allá de lo que Dios puede hacer por nosotros. Lo que hizo con Israel es solamente una pequeña manifestación de lo que ha proyectado sobre todos los hombres. Y eso que piensa hacer con nosotros, lo ha hecho con Jesucristo, su Hijo, a quien ha resucitado, lo ha liberado de la muerte. Es eso lo que nos espera a todos de parte del Dios de Israel y del Dios de Jesucristo. Todos, judíos y paganos, deben encontrarse en ese Dios resucitador, porque hemos sido llamados a la vida verdadera. Ese es el sentido de la Pascua cristiana que marca todo el horizonte de este tiempo cuaresmal.
La lectura del evangelio de Lucas nos expone el relato de las tentaciones, una de las narraciones más expresivas, aunque bien es verdad que no exenta de dificultades. Podemos resumir así el significado del evangelio: Jesús afronta tres tentaciones. Esto viene de
la tradición. No es que el número tres sea determinante y no se explica solamente recurriendo al pueblo en el desierto, aunque es posible que esa es la inspiración de este relato. Pero en definitiva son el simbolismo de toda la lucha entre el bien y el mal, entre la elección de uno mismo y la opción por Dios. Todas las tentaciones tienen como objetivo, en definitiva, romper la "comunión" con Dios. Para Lucas, Jesús es el nuevo Adán, como se expresa por su genealogía (Lc 3,1ss), por eso no tiene otro proyecto de vida que el vivir la comunión con Dios, que el primer Adán había perdido.
