WORKSHOP BRIEFS Seminar Session Times - Saturday 3rd August

Morning session: 9.00am – 12.00pm (approx.)

Afternoon session: 1.30pm – 4.30pm (approx.)

WORKSHOP ONE – Choreography and dancers with Emma Holloway (Morning)

This workshop is for dancers with experience and budding choreographers.

Emma will workshop how to prepare for a production as a choreographer and showcasing different dance

styles in Musical Theatre.

WORKSHOP TWO – Movers who want to be groovers with Emma Holloway (Afternoon)

This workshop is for the movers who would like to gain further skills with their dancing abilities.

Emma will workshop the use of simple but effective steps and moves that include all people in a cast, and

hints to help get through a dance audition.

WORKSHOP THREE – Vocal Technique Masterclass for performers with Arlie McCormick

(Afternoon)

In this workshop, Arlie will cover:

Audition tips

Performance techniques

Addressing vocal challenges

Safe belting

Authentic storytelling

IMPORTANT: If you wish to participate in this class, please submit sheet music for one song to

[email protected] by 19th July. Note – approx. 8-9 attendees will get to sing, others will

observe.

WORKSHOP FOUR – Taking the next step into Musical Directing with Arlie McCormick (Morning)

In this workshop, Arlie will cover:

Preparing to be a musical director

Warm up techniques

Vocal health – safe practices

Teaching harmonies – how to blend a group

A group song will be workshopped

WORKSHOP FIVE – Dramaturgy in Musical Theatre with Amanda Martin (Afternoon)

Participants are encouraged to bring in work or ideas for this session - as either musical theatre scriptwriters

OR directors. Amanda will be covering the following:

An introduction to dramaturgy in MT

An exploration of dramaturgical questions during the development of new musicals

Dramaturgy & directing

Workshopping

WORKSHOP SIX – Dramaturgy for Singers/Songwriters with Amanda Martin (Morning)

Participants should bring in a song to workshop (as singers OR songwriters). Amanda will workshop with

attendees and cover the following:

Basic song analysis; breaking down a song beat by beat to understand shifts

Workshopping

WORKSHOP SEVEN – Creating a character with Makeup – with Angela Pethig (Morning and

Afternoon – this is not a full day session. You can either attend AM or PM)

First half of the session (before smoko) will be a demo recreating the Elphaba makeup from Wicked

(including the quick change at half time when Elphaba turns from good to evil) and a demo of a witch type

character with brow block and basic aging.

The second half of the session (after smoko) will be a demonstration showing how to change facial structure

and creating character expression through makeup.

Techniques covered will include:

How to use grease paint/cream-based makeup for creating characters and the pros & cons

How to use aqua colour paints and the pros and cons

Contouring & highlighting

Applying eyeshadow easily and quickly and what brushes to use

Applying eyeliner and false lashes

Eyebrow blocking with glue

Basic ageing techniques

Changing facial structure, lip shape and brow shape for character expression

Other items that will be covered in the session:

Products used to create face charts and why it's helpful to make them

Different kinds of stage lighting and how it effects the makeup.

Differences of how to apply makeup for small, medium & large size theatre stages

The importance of hygiene and keeping your equipment & brushes clean

Looking after your skin during a show and how best to remove makeup

Why we should all be using biodegradable glitters

Meet the fabulous tutors!

Emma Holloway Emma hailed from Sydney where she had trained in ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary dance from a young age. She danced professionally for several years in Australia, India and Taiwan on numerous corporate and theme park contracts.

She moved to New Zealand in 2008 to teach at Bennet School of Ballet and Jazz, where she now teaches classes in musical theatre, jazz, ballet and tap. Emma also coaches students in presentation choreography and performance at the Dunedin ice Skating Club. Since moving to New Zealand she has danced with DKCM Ltd, Brophy Aerials, the Boom Boom Room and Otago Dancers. Emma has performed and Choreographed for various shows and sporting or corporate events in and around Dunedin. In 2014 she made her musical theatre debut with Taieri Musical and DKCM’s Mamma Mia and has been busy

since choreographing the following shows. East Otago Musical Theatre- Oklahoma, Anything Goes and

Celebration. Taieri Musical - Gourmet Broadway, Grease the Arena Spectacular Live, Mary Poppins and Ovation.

Musical Theatre Oamaru - The Addams Family, Musical Theatre Dunedin- West End to Broadway, Priscilla Queen

of the Desert and Wicked, Invercargill Musical Theatre -Grease the Arena Spectacular Live and Wicked.

She won Best Choreographer at the Otago Southland Theatre Awards in 2015 Mamma Mia, 2017 for Grease -The

Arena Spectacular Live, 2018 for Mary Poppins and 2019 for Ovation.

Arlie McCormick Arlie McCormick is currently a Professional Practice Fellow in

Contemporary and Musical Theatre Voice at the University of

Otago. Originally from Brisbane, she studied at Griffith University’s

Queensland Conservatorium of Music and has a Bachelor of Music

in Jazz voice and a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy.

Since moving to Dunedin, Arlie has run the Performing Arts

Programme for ‘Hands on Otago’ in both 2017 and 2018, held vocal

workshops for the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand and

adjudicated for various competitions.

In addition to her work at the University, Arlie also has her own private

teaching studio called ‘Rising Star’ and travels extensively taking Master

Classes and Workshops throughout New Zealand sharing her passion and knowledge for vocal pedagogy.

An accomplished performer, Arlie performs regularly as a singer and pianist for high profile corporate events.

These include the 150th Anniversary Dinner for the University of Otago and the Fonterra National Conference but

her passion for musical theatre is also strong, and in 2018 Arlie won an OSTA for her portrayal of the Bird Woman

in Taieri Musicals Mary Poppins. This year Arlie was the Musical Director for East Otago Musical Theatres’

production of The Addams Family.

Amanda Faye Martin Amanda Faye Martin is an American theatre practitioner with a focus in dramaturgy and playwriting. As a dramaturg, recent projects include the new musical Waitress (American Repertory Theatre, Cambridge, MA) and Who Would Be King (Oberon, Cambridge, MA, and Ars Nova, New York, NY). Writing projects include Lessons from Lenny Bruce (Brandeis University, Waltham, MA), Chamber Play (Oberlin College, OH), Little Bits of Light (Hampstead Stage Company, Chicago, IL & touring), and Yellow Coal (University of Otago). She is also a co-founder of Wormwood Theatre in Denver, CO, and collaborated on the Tunes, Brews, and Wormwood play series, which involved pairing with a different local band and brewery each month to develop music, beer & site inspired works.

Amanda holds a BA from Kenyon College (Gambier, OH), and an MFA in Dramaturgy from the A.R.T./MXAT Institute for Advanced Theatre Training at Harvard University (Cambridge, MA). She is currently a William Evans Playwriting Fellow at the University of Otago.

Angela Pethig Angela is an award-winning hair stylist, makeup artist and

body painter who has been passionately working in the beauty

industry for 28 years.

She is currently Head of Makeup at Yoobee School of Design in

Christchurch, where she teaches hairstyling, makeup and basic

special effects.

After training as a makeup artist, beauty therapist and hairdresser,

she set up her own business as a freelance makeup artist which

has allowed her to be part of many facets of the beauty industry.

She has worked with many of New Zealand’s top photographers,

fashion designers, hairdressers and models, on runway fashion shows,

in film and TV – including the ever-popular NZ soap Shortland Street –

along with creating beautiful looks for many everyday clients.

Angela has also been lucky enough to work on many theatre productions in Auckland and Christchurch. Her recent

credits with Showbiz Christchurch include Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, We Will Rock You, makeup manager for

the NZ premiere of Wicked and makeup designer for Les Miserables. Angela also works with the Court Theatre,

training the actors to do their own makeup and most recently for Hedwig & the Angry Inch.
