1 Overview1.1 IntroductionNexentaEdgeisamulti-servicescale-outstoragesystemforObject,BlockandFilestorageservices,thatrunsonindustrystandardx86servers,scalesfromhundredsofterabytestopetabyteconfigurations,andincludesadvanceddatamanagementfunctionalitysuchascluster-wideinlinededuplicationandcompression.Itisideallysuitedfornextgenerationprivatecloudinfrastructure,container-convergedinfrastructureandpetabytescalecoldandactivearchivesrepositories.ThisdocumentisintendedforNexentaPartnersandNexentacustomer-facingorganizationslookingtodeployNexentaEdge2.0.ThelatestversionoftheNexentaEdge2.0ConfigurationGuidelinesispostedonPartnerPortal.

1.2 NexentaEdgeArchitectureNexentaEdgeisatrulydistributed,scale-outarchitecture,consistingoffourormorephysicalserversinterconnectedusingadedicated10GigabitEthernet(10GbE)networkforclustercommunication.Theconnectedserversformaclusterthatmaintainsredundancyandresilienceofdatathroughoutthesystemusingstrongcryptographicchecksumsfordataintegrity,andreplicationorerasurecodingtechnologytoensurehardware-levelredundancy.NexentaEdgeclusterscanbedeployedaseitherall-flash,hybrid,orall-diskconfigurations.All-diskclusterconfigurationsmayonlyprovideobjectservices.All-flashandhybridconfigurationscandeliverblock,fileandobjectservices.ANexentaEdgeclusterconsistsofthefollowingcomponents:• DatanodesthatprovideKey/Valuedatastorefordeduplicated,compresseduserdata• Networkinginfrastructure–NexentaEdgerequiresaminimumof10GbEandIPv6capablenetworking• Gatewayservicesdeployedascontainersontheunderlyinghardwareinfrastructure.Gatewayservices

connectthestoragesystemtothefront-endclientsandapplicationsthroughanyofthesupportedaccessprotocols:Block(iSCSIorNativeBlockDevices)orobject(S3andSwift)

PartnerslookingtoofferNexentaEdgestoragesolutionshavetheflexibilitytoutilizeawidevarietyofindustry-standardx86serverconfigurationsasserverplatforms.ThemainrequirementisforthehardwaretobefullysupportedbytheversionsoftheLinuxOperatingSystemsthatNexentaEdge2.0support,generallylaterversionsofRedHatLinux,CentOSorUbuntu.PleaseseetheReleaseNotesforNexentaEdge2.0foradditionaldetails.

1.2.1 DataNodesDatanodesareutilizedbyNexentaEdgetostoredataandmetadata.Theseserversarerequiredtobedirectlyconnectedtotheback-endNexentaEdgeReplicaststoragenetwork,butdonothavetobeconnectedtothefront-end(client)network.NexentaEdgerequireseachDatanodetohaveatleastfourdrives(harddrivesorsolidstatedrives),butanodecanhavemanymore.Note:ForanyNexentaEdgeconfigurationsthatpresentBlockorFilestoragetoclients,theDatanodesmusthaveatleastoneSSDthatcanbeusedforjournaling,cachingandmetadatastorage.Forobject-onlyconfigurationstheSSDisrecommendedforhighperformanceenvironment,butnotnecessaryforcoldstorageenvironment.

1.2.2 GatewayServicesTheGatewayservicesaretheconnectionpointbetweentheclientapplicationsandtheNexentaEdgecluster.TheseservicesruntheiSCSIblockservices,NFSservicesorobjectstorageAPIgateways,andareresponsiblefortranslatingto/fromthesestandardaccessprotocolsandstoringorretrievingthedatafromtheDatanodesinsidethecluster.GatewayservicesaregenerallydeployedasDockercontainerizedservicesonasubsetofthephysicalserversinthecluster.ThephysicalserversthatrunGatewayservicesaretheonlyserversthatneedtobeconnectedtoboththefront-end(client)networkaswellastheback-endNexentaEdgeReplicaststoragenetwork.TheseserversmayeitherbededicatedtorunningaparticularsetofGatewayservices,ortheycanalsoactasDatanodesintheNexentaEdgeclusterinwhatarecalledMixedModeorContainer-Convergeddeployments.

1.2.3 MixedModeConfigurationNexentaEdgecanfunctioninsocalled,mixed-mode,wherebothGatewayandDataNodeservicesrunonthesamephysicalhardware.IntheseconfigurationsitisimportantthatthesystemisadequatelysizedforbothservicesForamixed-modeserver2x10GbEnetworkinterfacesareneededforReplicast(StorageBackend)andatleast1x10GbEnetworkinterfaceforpublic/clienttraffic,eachservermustthereforhaveatleast3physical10GbEinterfaces.InadditiontotheadditionalnetworkrequirementthememoryrequirementsoftheseserversalsoincreaseanditshouldbeconsideredtobethatofaindividuallysizedGatewayNode+thatofaDataNode.

1.2.4 NetworkEquipmentNexentaEdgerequiresadedicatednetworkforstoragecommunicationwithinthecluster.ThisnetworkcanbeeitherphysicaloradedicateduntaggedVLANanditmustfulfilltheserequirements:• 10GigabitEthernet• IPv6capable• Multicastsupport• ThenetworkmustsupportLayer2trafficbetweenallnodes• FlowControl(PauseFrames)turnedonforbothRx/Tx• JumboFramesupportToensurethatthenetworkingequipmentiscapableofsupportingahigh-performance,low-latencynetwork,Nexentaprovidesalistoftestednetworkingequipmentinsection2.1.1.

andprivatenetworks• TheContainerConvergedmodelallowsdeploymentutilizingDockercontainertechnologiestorunboth

1.3.1 AnexampleProofofConceptEnvironmentAtaminimum,aproofofconceptenvironmentmustconsistofatleastfourphysicalserversrunningNexentaEdge,andone10GigabitEthernetswitchutilizedforstoragenetworking.AtleastoneoftheserversmustbecapableofrunningbothGatewayandDataservicesinmixed-mode,orcontainerconvergedasdescribedinNexentaEdgeArchitecturesection.ThistypeofconfigurationshouldbeconsideredastheminimalbuildingblockforNexentaEdge,butanycomponentcanbescaledindependently.TheperformancecharacteristicoftheproofofconceptenvironmentisdirectlyrelatedtothenumberofharddrivesandSSD’sperserver.ToimprovetheperformancethenumberofharddrivesandSSD’sshouldbeincreasedtoatleast10+2perserverbeforeincreasingthenumberofdatanodes.

1.3.2 Anexamplemulti-rackProductiondeploymentWhenNexentaEdgeisdeployedinproduction,itisrecommendedtodistributetheserversacrossmultiplefailuredomains,acrossmultipleracks,toensurethatfailureofanygivencomponentcannotaffectavailabilityofdataorservices.Properlyconfigured,thistypeofconfigurationallowservicestosurvivemultiplecomponent,server,rack,andnetworkfailuresupuntilonlyasinglecopyofthedataremainsonline.Toconfigureafullyredundantsystem,eachserverrackshouldcontainasmanyDatanodeasrequiredtostoreonecopyofthedataandatleastoneGatewaynode,bothconnectedtoa10GigabitEthernettopofrackswitch.Forlargeenvironmentswhereacompletecopyofthedatacannotfitonthedatanodesinasinglerackadditionalconfigurationmayberequired,pleasecontactyourNexentaSalesEngineerforfurtherguidance.

1.4 NexentaEdgeSolutions

1.4.1 ConfigurationGuidelinesAconfigurationfromtheNexentaEdgeConfigurationGuidelinescomprisesofspecificserversandstorageenclosureconfigurationsfromaspecificservervendor.Thereissomeflexibilityintailoringyourcomponentswithinreasonablelimitstomeetcapacityandperformancerequirements.TheconfigurationsinthisdocumentaretheminimumrecommendedconfigurationsbyNexentaanddesignedtooptimizecapacity,performanceandcost.Nexentaandhardwaretechnologypartners(suchasCisco,Dell,HPE,Lenovo,Micron,Supermicroandothers)collaboratetocertifyNexentaEdgesoftwareineachconfiguration.Insomecases,hardwaretechnologypartnersofferconsolidatedSKUsfortheseconfigurationstosimplifyorderingandsupportofNexentaEdgesolutions.LeveragingthesetestedconfigurationsprovidethefastestpathtomarketforNexentaPartners.

1.4.2 RecommendedHardwareNexentaEdgeprovidesalargeamountofflexibilityforbuildingthephysicalserverstomeetspecificneeds.Assuch,NexentaEdgecanbedeployedwithawidevarietyofmemory,disk,andcachingconfigurations,butcareshouldbetakentobalancethevariouscomponentsofthesystemforbestperformanceandcapacity.ThevariousconfigurationsbelowincludeflexibilitytochoosedifferentCPUs,memory,diskandsolid-statedevicesizesandratiosbasedonthespecificneed.EvenwiththisbuiltinflexibilityoftheNexentaEdgeplatform,notethesegeneralguidelines:• IftheGatewayandDatanodeservicesrunonthesamenode

• TheCPUmustbereplacedwithamorepowerfulversionandtheamountofRAMmustbeincreased• Additional10GbEnetworkportsmustbemadeavailable,atleast1xfrontend(publicnetwork)and2xbackend

(storagenetwork)• IftheclusterisutilizedforsmallerrandomI/O(typicalofblockservices)alldatanodesmusthaveatleastoneSSD

deviceassignedforjournalingandcache• AruleofthumbforsizingSSDs

• Maintainatleast5%ofthedatacapacityforjournalingandcaches• Maintainaratioof1xSSDperevery5HDDinthesystem

• Forcapacity-basedObjectstoragesolutions,usingSSDdevicesisgenerallynotnecessaryforacceleration• SSDsshouldbeintendedformixed-useorwrite-intensiveworkloadsandratedforatleast3-10DWPD.Smaller

SSD’smustbecapableofsustainingahighernumberofdailyoverwritestomaintainthesameperformanceovertime.

2 NetworkEquipment2.1 NetworkRequirementsNexentaEdgemakesextensiveuseofmodernnetworkingtechnologiessuchasIPv6andmulticasting.Asaresult,thenetworkingequipmentmustfulfilltherequirementslistedbelowforsuccessfuldeployments.Asageneralguideline,mostnamebrandenterpriseclass10GbEswitchesmeettherequirementsbelow,butcareshouldbetakentoconfiguretheswitchportsappropriately.• Bothswitchesandnetworkinterfacecardsmustsupport10GigabitEthernet(10GbE)orabove• ThenetworkinfrastructuremustsupportIPv6andIPv6multicasting• AllnetworkswitchesassignedtotheNexentaEdgestoragenetworkmustbenon-blockingenterpriseclassswitches• Eachnetworkport(switchandhost)configuredforNexentaEdgemusthave:

o Jumboframesupport(MaximumTransferUnitsizelargerthan9000)o FlowControl(PauseFrames)forbothReceiveandTransmitmustbeturnedon

IfthenetworkswitchsupportsadvancedcapabilitiessuchasMulticastListenerDiscovery(MLD)snooping,DataCenterBridging(DCB),PriorityFlowControl(PFC)andEnhancedTransmissionSelection(ETS),thesecapabilitiescanbeleveragedbyNexentaEdgetoimprovethenetworkingperformanceandreliability.PleasecontactNexentaSalesEngineeringforadditionalinformation.
