NEXANS 2016 CANADIAN BUILDING WIRE CATALOGUE

INTRODUCTION

Nexans brings energy to life through an extensive range of cables and cabling solutions that deliver impeccable performance for our customers worldwide. With more than a century of experience in cable manufacturing, you can rely on the quality of Nexans’ products. Our teams are committed to a partnership approach that supports customers in four main business areas: Power transmission and distribution (Submarine and Land), Energy resources (Oil & Gas, Mining and Renewables), Transportation (Road, Rail, Air, Sea) and Building (Commercial, Residential, Industrial and Data Centres).

Nexans’ strategy is founded on continuous innovation in products, solutions and services, employee development, customer training and the introduction of safe, low-environmental-impact industrial processes. In 2013, Nexans became the first cable manufacturer to create a Foundation to introduce sustained initiatives for access to energy for disadvantaged communities worldwide.

This catalogue has been prepared for the convenience of those using electrical conductors in buildings of all classes. The information included in the many tabulations will be of particular value to the architect, engineer, electrician, and layperson alike. For your convenience, we have referenced applicable Articles and Tables from the NEC.

All the cables in this catalogue are LEAD FREE. This indicates that the Nexans cable components have less than 300 ppm of lead, which is well below the 1000 ppm level indicated in RoHS (restriction of hazardous substances) regulations and below the level requiring labeling by California Proposition #65.

NMD90 HEATEX® 300 Volts 90ºC

StandardsNational CSA C22.2 N° 48

Description

CSA File #LL23462 Class 5821 02

NMD90 (Red) HEATEX® is a variant of copper conductor NMD90 CANADEX®, with NO WHITE WIRE in the 2 conductor cable. This cable is designed for use on 240-volt systems where there is no NEUTRAL, therefore the cable has a black and a red conductor in addition to the bare bonding wire. To make identification easier it is usually supplied with a RED overall jacket. It should NOT be used on 120 volt systems as there is no neutral, and it is dangerous to use either the red or the black as a neutral. Large sizes are available for use with electric furnaces.

Application

For open or concealed wiring in dry or damp locations where not exposed to mechanical injury.

Minimum recommended handling temperature minus 25°C (with suitable handling procedures).

Maximum conductor temperature 90°C.

Specifically designed for 240 V heating circuits.

Interlock aluminum or galvanized steel armour with or without overall jacket.

Application

SECUREX® II is a 300V 105°C cable specifically designed for the interconnection of security system elements: including fire protective signaling devices such as smoke and fire detectors, fire alarms, and two-way emergency communication systems.

Code Requirements

Although SECUREX® II cable is fire rated to CSA FT4 requirements, Section 32 of the Canadian Electrical Code requires the use of mechanical protection for fire alarm cable installations in non-combustible buildings.

RULE 32-102

Subrule (1)

All conductors of a fire alarm system shall be:

installed in metal raceway of the totally enclosed type; orincorporated in cable having a metal armour or sheath; orinstalled in rigid non-metallic conduit where embedded in at least 50mm of masonry or poured concrete, or or installed underground; orinstalled in electrical non-metallic tubing where embedded in at least 50mm of masonry or poured concrete.

Subrule (2)

Notwithstanding Subrule (1), conductors installed in buildings of combustible construction in accordance with Rulesof Section 12 shall be permitted to be:

nonmetallic sheathed cable; orfire alarm and signal cable; orinstalled in a totally enclosed nonmetallic raceway.

As a cost-effective alternate to metal raceway, SECUREX® II is now available in popular sizes and conductor counts withaluminum interlock armour.

Selling informationCAUTION In case of fire, well-maintained early warning smoke detectors will give an alarm long before non-metallic coverings become combustible. However, in spite of the widespread and longstanding use of PVC in residential and commercial buildings, all purchasers of PVC insulated/jacketed products should be aware of the following:Non-metallic coverings of electrical cables can burn and may transmit fire when ignited. Burning non-metallic coverings may emit gases which are toxic and may generate dense smoke. Emission of acid gases may corrode metal in the vicinity; e.g., sensitive instruments and reinforcing rods in cement.
