Ron Parsons was our speaker in March Diablo View Orchid Societ

April 2012

Step right up ladies and gentlemen...don’t be afraid...you’re about to witness some of the great-est oddities of the orchid world. You are about to embark on a strange tour of the orchid carnival and sideshow.

Page 3: nex meeting , April. 12thdvos.org/NewsLetter/2012/April2012.pdfD & D Flowers Spring Open House Half Moon Bay (925) 969-1246 May 19 & 20, 2012 9:00 AM to 3 PM FREE admission and parking

Ron Parsons continued

Ron Parsons was our Ringmaster and took the DVOS crowd on a carnival tour of the Aus-tralian orchid world. These Australian oddities were viewed by Ron on a 2000 trip to the land down under.

First up, behind the curtain on your left, you will see the equivalent of the bearded lady - the orchid world’s own “bearded orchid”. Male or female? Always a tough one to call, and I’m not sure I want to know. As we tour further around the orchid carnival we see the creepy room full of “spider orchids”. Lots of ugh and yuck coming from the gathering outside of this room.

Like any good carnival most of the entertainment comes from watching the crowd. This Aus-tralian crowd of orchids does not disappoint. Most of the crowd is attended by the “hooded orchids”. These orchids of course were not showing much of their faces, but were flashing plenty of gang signs. The crowd also had a few odd balls, left overs, if you will, from the mid-evil theater next door. These are easily recognized as the “helmet” orchids. These orchids are obviously looking for constant attention.

The show was over after about 45 minutes. On your way out you may have noticed the flock of “bird” orchids with their prominent beak like appearance and the gaggle of “Flying Duck” orchids making their way north for the winter.

Thanks again, Ron. The only thing missing from this carnival was the cotton candy orchid and kettle corn orchid. Oh, and Dave Tomassini, no 6-inch hot dog on a stick orchids either.

D & D Orchids is located in Half Moon Bay 1/3 mile east of Main Street off Hwy 92. Just east of Spanish Town on Hwy. 92 there is a house and fi re-wood business. Turnonto the street between the house and fi rewoodbusiness and go over the bridge into the greenhousecomplex. D & D Flowers is the fi rst greenhouse on the right. If you go beyond the large dinosaur statues in front of the house and Spanish Town and you are at Main Street, you’ve gone too far.

Really good deals... priced to sell. There is no list of plants available and divisions are sold on fi rst come for serve. We will be having a $7.00 sale on many cattleya, oncidium and cymbidium seedlings and back bulbs. We accept cash or checks but no credit cards.

Help your local orchid society. For every $25 you spend, you may enter your local orchid society in a raffl e for their monthly opportunity table. 40 healthy plants (some in bloom) will be award to the winning society. Winning society will be picked at the end of Sunday. The society must redeem their prize to D & D Flowers by the next open house which will take place in October of 2011.

AOS Cor er By Lynn Fuller AOS Cor er By Lynn Fuller affi [email protected] that Summer is behind us, let’s hope the weather calms down so we can all enjoy the upcoming orchid show season. Some of you are starting to hold their meetings again aft er a summer hiatus. Th e AOS has had a busy summer as well. Th ere are new novice culture sheets for most of the more popular orchids. If you are a member of AOS and have not already registered for access to the new website Members’ Only, I hope you do it soon. One major diff erence in the new website is that it may be translated into a multitude of foreign languages. Th e translation is done with a drop down menu on the left hand top portion of the site. Also, the site is continually being populated with up-to-date orchid information. In addition, there is a new member’s profi le where you can renew your membership, change your mailing address or email information and man-age your AQ+ subscription. Plus, each month, Ron McHatton produces a fabulous electronic newsletter fi lled with all kinds of orchid culture information. If you are already an AOS member and not receiving no-tifi cations of these monthly newsletters, AOS does not have your email address. To be added to the distribu-tion list, send your email address along with your full name to Terri Rivera at [email protected]. Please note: if you are having diffi culties signing into the ‘Members Only’ section, it may be that your prior registration is no longer valid. With the new website, each member must renew their registration. Instructions for doing so are on the home page of AOS. You will also fi nd a tab on the home page about the Myrtle Head Savanna Conservation Committee project. It is up and running and donations are being made. You can read more about this joint project with Nature Conservancy in the August Orchids as well as the website. If you or your society has funds for conservation, please consider this worthwhile project. It certainly deserves all our support and it would be great if AOS could reach its monetary goal soon. If you are unable to make an online donation on the AOS webpage, you may send a contribution by check to AOS. Just make sure to note on the check that it is for the Myrtle Head Savanna Project so you receive proper recognition. All my arrangements for attending the AOS Fall Members’ meeting in San Antonio are made. Th e Alamo Orchid Society has put together a wonderful meeting and I look forward to being there. It runs from Oc-tober 25 – 30 and has a great line up of speakers and vendors. In addition to Trustee and Committee meet-ings, the traditional Affi liated Societies breakfast will be held and I hope to see some of you there. Check out the Alamo Orchid Society website at www.alamoorchidsociety.com for registration or more information.

One of the more interesting advantages of being the AOS Affi liated Societies Chair is that some of the societies send me their newsletters. I scan those that I directly get as well as on go to the AOS forum and read some of the news-letters that are posted there. By going through these newsletters, I realize how active, vibrant and healthy many of our affi liated societies are. Through their commitment and love of orchids, they manage to share their knowledge and passion with other like-minded individuals. Through the advancement of social media and computerized publishing programs, these newsletters are fi lled with great photographs of orchids of their shows and meeting show tables , more regional cultural information. Through these AOS Corners, I provide information for the societies to use in their newsletters about the American Orchid Society and its programs, activities and resources. I appreciate it when I see them posted in these newsletters. The Kansas Orchid Society will be hosting the AOS Annual Members meeting at its annual orchid show April 25 – 30, 2012 in Wichita. SWROGA and other alliances will be holding their meetings as part of this meeting. These na-tional and regional meetings provide the opportunity to shop, meet the vendors and others in the orchid world face to face, talk about what is new in the orchid world or have someone just listen to your own theories and tips. The speakers for the AOS Members Meeting and Kansas Orchid Society Show are diverse and defi nitely provide something for every-one. They are Dr. Leonid Averyanov, Keynote Speaker, Senior Researcher and Professor of the Herbarium of Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg, Russia), and Vice President of the All-Russian Botanical Society. He will be speaking on ‘Orchids of Vietnam: Ecology of Ornamental Species’. Dr. Raymond A. Cloyd, Professor and Extension Specialist in Ornamental Entomology/Integrated Pest Management, Department of Entomology, Kansas State University, who will be speaking on ‘Pests of Orchids’. Robert Fuchs, R.F. Orchids, who will be speaking on ‘Vandaceous Intergeneric Hybrids’. Patricia Harding, AOS judge and Author, speaking on Brazilian Oncidiums’. Norito Hasegawa, of Paphanatics, Unlimited and an ‘over extended hobbyiest presenting ‘What’s New in Paphs?’. Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids speaking about ‘Species Habitat and Hybrid Culture’ and Bryon Rinke, presenting a presentation on ‘Phalaenopsis lobbii and parishii, the species and hybrids’. There are many other regional orchid events going on and they are listed on the AOS website under Events.
