Newton’s Laws of Motion
A journey into inertia, net force, and
other topics….
![Page 2: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Force is central to understanding Newton’s Laws
A Force can be thought of as a
push, like a quarterback throwing a football.
![Page 3: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Force is central to understanding Newton’s Laws
A Force can also be
thought of as a pull, like a boat towing a skier.
![Page 4: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Another idea central to Newton’s Laws is MASS.
Anything which is made of matter, or atoms, has
mass. Anything you can touch or
see has mass, including
students at Central!!
![Page 5: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Along with the idea of
mass is Inertia.
![Page 6: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
More mass means more
Inertia.
![Page 7: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Less mass means less Inertia.
![Page 8: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Inertia is the tendency of an object to stay at rest or
move at a constant velocity
• What does that sound like?
![Page 9: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Newton’s 1st Law
• Objects tend to either remain at rest or move at constant velocity unless acted on by a Net Force.
• What is a Net Force?
![Page 10: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
When an object is at rest the forces are all equal or in
equilibrium.
Gravity pulls down on the
rock
But the rock is pushing up
with equal force!
![Page 11: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
When forces are equal there is NO Net Force!
![Page 12: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
What if the wind was pushing on the rock with greater force
than the rock could push back?
![Page 13: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
There would be a Net Force in the direction of the wind!
![Page 14: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
The rock would fall over in the direction of the Net
Force!
![Page 15: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
What is the Net Force in this picture?
Contact of the bat on the baseball!!
![Page 16: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
What other forces are in action in this picture?
Air Resistance
Gravity
![Page 17: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Initially the force of the ball coming off of the bat is
stronger!Air
Resistance
Gravity
It is the Net Force!!
![Page 18: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Acceleration can also be thought of as a signal that a
force has been applied!!Air
Resistance
Gravity
Even changing directions
requires force!!
![Page 19: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)

Net Force has direction. We call this a vector !
![Page 21: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
We have already talked about velocity, acceleration, and momentum, which have
direction and are also vectors !
![Page 22: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Force is measured in Newtons (N)
1 N =1 kg ∙ ms 2
![Page 23: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)

Air Resistance, a form of friction, pushes against the
truck.
![Page 26: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Free-Body Diagrams
There is also friction between the road and the
tires.

The desk pushes up
on the sewing
machine
The desk is exerting what is called Normal Force!
![Page 29: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Free-Body Diagrams
Is there a Net Force
in this case?
No! The forces are equal and the desk is not moving!
![Page 30: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Let’s Look at Types of Forces
• Gravity or Weight• Normal force• Friction• Tension• Thrust
![Page 31: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Gravity or Weight
• Can be as simple as an object sitting on a table.
• Formula for Weight is W=mg.
![Page 32: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
Thrust
• Forces that move
objects from
rockets to cars to people.
![Page 33: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Normal Force
• The force exerted by the surface the object is on.
• It is always perpendicular or at 90°.
![Page 34: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)

Tension
• Tension is force being applied to a rope or string.
• It applies when an object is hanging by a string or being pulled by a rope.
FT
![Page 37: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)

Newton’s Third Law
• Whenever one body exerts a
force on another body, the second body exerts an
oppositely directed force of equal magnitude on the first body.
![Page 40: Newton’s Laws of Motion A journey into inertia, net force, and other topics….](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051401/56649cb95503460f949807d1/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
Newton’s Third Law
You probably learned this as
“For every action there is an equal but
opposite reaction.”
