    PHIL COX DROPS MEDIA STUDIES;

    CLASS MATES STUNNED(Left): Phil

    three months

    ago on his

    way to prom

Phillip Cox shocked teachers and pupils at Fairfax School

this week when he dropped Media Studies shortly before

being due to give an address to the class on a film trailer.

On Friday October 8th Philip Cox,

seventeen year old student at Fairfax

Sixth Form went to see Mr Richard

Cornell, Head of the Sixth Form, to

With AS Levels now well underway the

Fairfax Media Studies class was set the

task of presenting back to the class

    about newspapers. Under the dubious

title of Papers and Purposes, one

    such student set to work.

Brandon Keane, a sixteen year old

student from Fairfax Sixth Form who was

voted Mad Scientist in 2009, set about

the task with dedication, and set about

    making a ridiculous newspaper-esque

    front page for his presentation.

I just wanted it to stand out a little bit,

him today, I mean, I quickly realised I had

some space to fill and so began to think to

myself; how can I get the names of other

people into my first slide? The obvious

one was Phil, as I had a prom photo of

him in the limo. The next was Oshinselection, so I put there too. I couldve

comb list), or Mr Lees countdown of the

actually said during the meeting remains

unknown and those present remain tight-

lipped about the entire affair, but what we

do know is that Phil has not been seen in

    What is a Newspaper

    Urm

Some paperWith news written on it?

More seriously, newspapers are a way of accessing information,

whether that information is hard news, stock information, celebritygossip, weather or horoscopes.

    Dictionary.com gives the definition as:

noun1. a publication issued at regular and usually close intervals, esp. daily or weekly, and

commonly containing news, comment, features, and advertising.

    2. a business organization publishing such a publication.

    3. a single issue or copy of such a publication.

    4. newsprint.

    Different Types of Newspaper

Within Britain we have two main types of newspaper: broadsheets

and tabloids. There are also mid market newspapers, which lie

    somewhere in the middle.

    Owners and Political Allegiances

All newspapers are owned by someone, be it an individual or a

group, and most have a prevalent political view. This is important to

remember as it will affect how and what a newspaper publishes.

For example, they are not likely to print a huge article on somethingtheir owner has done wrong, or if they support the Conservatives

they might put a negative slant on the Labour Party Conference.

    Broadsheets

    Summary

Also known as the quality press, broadsheets are less widely circulated than

tabloids, and are considered more intellectual.

    Demographic

Traditionally the broadsheet papers were aimed at managers and people with

professions (such as doctors, lawyers etc)

    Content

Matching this intellectual target demographic, the broadsheets present hard

news, focusing on the big stories with a mix of reporting, comment and opinion(although this opinion is unlikely to be anything but professional)

    Layout

Broadsheets are very much text orientated compared to tabloids and

    traditionally have fewer pictures.

    Broadsheets: The Modern World

    Changing Broadsheets

In recent years the introduction of things such as rolling news

television and internet news sites the circulation of newspapers hasdecreased, and newspapers have had to adapt to survive.

One change is that the broadsheets have begun to try and juggle

the hard news with reader entertainment in an attempt to hold

    readers.

    The Daily Telegraph

    Owned by the Barclay Brothers

    Had a circulation of 673 010 in 2010

Traditionally the paper is aligned to

the political centre-right and supportsthe Conservative Party

    Read traditionally by the middle

classes, the Daily Telegraph has, in the

past, had trouble with an ageingaudience that made it unpopular with

    advertisers

    Had a circulation of 502 436 in 2010

Traditionally the paper is aligned to

the political centre-right, although it(somewhat strenuously) supported

New Labour. As Milliband has said that

he wants to move away from New

Labour, it remains to be seen how this

    will affect the Times

    Once considered an elitist

newspaper, it is now seen as more

    down market and populist

    Tabloids

    Summary

Also known as the gutter press, tabloids have a much larger circulation than

the broadsheets, but are considered less intellectual.

    Demographic

Traditionally the tabloid papers are aimed at the working classes

    Content

Unlike broadsheets, tabloids focus more on sensationalist or celebrity news

and entertainment, as well as stories that focus on the darker side of humanity,

such as; sexual infidelity, corruption and homicide.

    Layout

Tabloids use a lot more pictures than broadsheets. They are also traditionally

of a physically smaller size, and many prefer to have very little actual text on

the front page in favour of more headlines and lures to draw us in to read it.

    Tabloids: Changing Terms
