From the desk of the CEO

Before we know it Christmas will be upon us a scary thought, I know! This edition is one of the last for 2013 with

just one more issue of Newsline to be distributed before the end of the year. Keep an eye out for our Christmas issue!

I have just returned from a wonderful ve week holiday in Europe where I spent my time enjoying the Netherlands, the

magnicent scenery of the Rhine and Moselle rivers and the history and architecture of Germany and France. The

Bavarian area of Germany is something else! Hope you enjoy the few photos (of the more than 1200 that I took!) thathave been included in this issue.

The team here did a magnicent job of keeping everything in perfect running order while I was away and I thank each

and every team member for their contribution. Plans are underway for our Management Team meeting to be held

mid-November this meeting will concentrate on our plans and targets for 2014 and beyond. Our internal audit will

    also occur early in November.

I was very excited to know that while I was away my footy team (AFL) got to the grand nal (yay!) a great result

for WA but unfortunately the Dockers could not kick enough winning goals on the day and had to concede the win

to the Hawksoh well, there is always next year! On a broader scale there was a change of Government a few

weeks ago which has resulted in some ministerial and department changes at the Federal level. Some of the key

changes include - the former Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary

Education (DIICCSRTE) has become the Department of Industry. The former Department of Education, Employment

and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) has been separated into two departments, the Department of Education and the

    Department of Employment.

The new Minister for Industry is the Hon Ian Macfarlane and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Minister for Industry

is the Hon Bob Baldwin. The Minister for Education and the Leader of the House is the Hon Christopher Pyne,

the Minister for Employment and Leader of the Government in the Senate is Senator the Hon Eric Abetz. It will be

interesting to see the developments in the VET sector over coming months as funding priorities wax and wane!

I will attend the Australian Council for Private Education and Training (ACPET) forum in Perth on October 18 to hear

from key speakers and provide input to the development of education and training policy in Western Australia as theVET market continues to change to reect the requirements of todays workplaces.

Client contact remains strong and it is very pleasing to see that the resources industry traineeship lead by BHP Billiton

and facilitated by Progressive Training (WA) Pty Ltd continues to gain momentum with the commencement of a fourth

intake, now bringing participant numbers to 32 trainees.

As you will see in the pages to follow, Progressive Trainings reputation of maintaining a varied schedule of activities

continues to keep us busy as we acknowledge further apprentice completions in the glass and glazing industry,

commence a new Federal Government Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) contract in partnership with

Kimberley Group Training, and commence delivery of training programs to key clients as a result of successfully

    gaining National Workforce Development Funding.

At the end of August we said goodbye to our Receptionist/Client Service Ofcer, Linda Chalwell and wish her well as

she begins a new career opportunity in Perth.

In terms of consolidating our business focus and operations we have taken the decision to close the Perth Ofce,

effective at the end of November. All services continue to be available from our Head Ofce located in Geraldton

and we welcome all enquiries relating to consultancy, training options and course delivery.

    Til next time

    Jenny Rolston

    Stafng Update

On Linda Chalwells last day here at Progressive Training (WA) Pty Ltdas our Client Services Ofcer, she ordered a

chocolate cake covered with Maltesers as she loves cake!

t is with sadness that we have had to say goodbye to one of our team

members and friend, as she started back in February of 2012 as an

Administration Trainee. As part of her Traineeship, Linda completed her

Certicate III in Business. It was most likely her lovely voice you would have

heard on the phone when you called us.

Linda was always ready to greet you with a beaming smile and willing to help

out at any time especially when it came to eating cake!

Not just content with completing a Certicate III in Business, Linda also

ecently completed her training as an Education Training Assistant. There

eally is no stopping Linda, and we know the choices she makes in her

career, and also life, will keep her in good stead and will lead her to great

    success.

Everyone here at Progressive Training (WA) Pty Ltd, and I am sure similar sentiments stem from everyone who met

Linda while working here, wish Linda all the very best for whatever she decides to do and we will miss her greatly.

    Glass Co Apprentices

Thursday 12th September 2013, marked an exciting day for both

Progressive Training and Glass Co, as a celebration took place

to congratulate Craig Phillips, Adam Pollard and Steele West on

completion of their apprenticeships. During the celebration, Craig,

Steele and Adam were presented with their Certicates to mark the

successful completion of their training. This is the second group of

apprentices to complete all training in Geraldton.

A partnership between Glass Co and Progressive Training (WA) Pty

Ltdwas formed about 3 years ago when Glass Co went looking for

an alternative to sending their apprenticeships to Perth for training.

Excellence in training is maintained with highly qualied local

personnel (Nancy Kirby and Dean West, as well as other senior

tradespeople at Glass Co). The partnership between Glass Co and

Progressive Training to achieve this outcome is indeed something of

    which to be proud.

    BHPBilliton Project Port Hedland

Over that past four months Ive been working on a number of projects at Port Hedland.

The majority of the projects are focused in the electrical technical training area in meeting BHP Billitons

requirements under the Mines Safety & Inspection Act.

    These include:

HV Switching Operator Levels 1, 2 & 3. Substation Safety & Arc Flash

    Statutory requirements for Electrical Supervisors

    Electrical Welding

    Electrical Induction

    Electrical Safety Observer

    Low Voltage Safety Procedures

There are a number of other packages that relate to plant equipment or familiarisation. These include Electrical

Motors, Earth Continuity Relays and Motorised Circuit Breaker operations.

The purpose of the packages is to give continuity of the delivery of the training. This is done by producing an easy

to follow set of Powerpoint slides accompanied with a set of participant notes as well as Presenter notes and

    assessment tools.

The work, at times, has been challenging in that its been a while since Ive worked in an electrical section, but its

amazing how things come back to the old dog.

The majority of the projects are in the draft stage. The next step in this process is for Bill Belson to head off to

Port Hedland to provide support and mentoring to the site training whilst they deliver and review the content of the

    packages.

    VET and Compliance Update

As there are package and version changes occurring regularly, the Scope and Training Operations Department is

constantly kept busy checking, updating and modifying. It will always be a continuous circle of improvement.

Towards the end of this year and early in the New Year, it is likely there will be some big changes to some of the

packages we have on Scope. Just three of these packages that will be affected are:

TAE40110 Certicate IV in Training and Assessment

    RII09 Resource & Infrastructure, and BSB07 Business

These changes will be quite signicant and will require a great deal of time, energy and patience to implement.

So, be aware, they are coming!

Within the last issue of Newsline, we brought to your attention the important date of the 1st of July, 2013. This

being the deadline set by the National Skills Standards Council (NSSC) requiring trainers and assessors, who want

to remain qualied and continue to deliver Nationally Recognised Training, to upgrade their qualication to the new

    TAE40110.

Since then, we have had many requests to upgrade Trainers/Assessors from their older qualication to the new

TAE40110. There has been so much interest in this, one of our Senior Consultants/TAE expert and photographerextraordinaire, Bill Belson, has taken on the role of managing the upgrade process - and doing an excellent job in

    the process!

If you head to the new and improved Progressive Training (WA) Pty Ltd website you will nd some of Bills fabulous

photos. Josh has done an impressive job on the new site which is very user friendly and full of great information.

Another great addition to the site is the Partner Log In. If you are a current partner of Progressive Training

(WA) Pty Ltd you will have access to the latest version of resources/assessment tools, etc. available on

our system directly accessible by you whenever you require them. All you need is your password and

away you go. We will be contacting our Partners directly to ensure you have all of the information you

need on how to access this. Go and check it out!

Stacey has been very busy updating the resources and assessment tools of the Cert I, II and III in Business, as

well as developing PowerPoint presentations for a few of the RII units such as Excavator, Telescopic Handler and

Working at Heights. This has been an arduous task and she can usually be heard madly tapping away at her

keyboard. We are sure she must have worn out at least two keyboards!

If you require resources to be developed for your organisation, give us a call to see if we can help. We can develop

the resources that you need to take your organisation to the next level. We will work closely with you to understand

your needs and develop resources that are tailored to your unique situation and align with your policies and

procedures. Our resource development services include:

Mapping of resources and assessment tools

    PowerPoint presentations *

    Lesson Plans Assessment Tools

    Policies and Procedures

    Training Systems

    Induction Packages

    Operator Procedure Manuals

    And much more

    * Not just PowerPoint! Our staff are kept up-to-date with the latest tools available and are trained to use products

such as Prezi (a highly engaging, cloud based presentation software that opens up a new world between

whiteboards and slides) to give your presentations that Wow! factor.

For more information or to speak with one of our staff members, call us on (08) 9964 9497 or send us an email,[email protected].

Sue is doing a great job in Scope and has also recently taken on the role of ensuring the processes involving

trainees and apprentices are managed. Part of this is the monitoring of trainees and apprentices. Please take the

time to communicate with Sue when she contacts you if you are a trainee, apprentice or supervisor, as she is your

point of contact if you need help in any way.

The last few months for Josh have included lots of Workforce Development Centre (WDC) workshops, updates to

our website, continual resource development, Excel training and the unique opportunity of getting to ride a ship into

    port.

    Workforce Development Centre

Through Joblink Midwest and the Workforce Development Centre (WDC) we have been able to build employability

skills into a massive range of students in the Geraldton and surrounding areas. One of the highlights for Josh has

been the recently completed Future Moves project at Nagle Catholic College where Josh got to meet with all the

year 10 classes for 8 sessions and introduce them to a range of tools and information that will no doubt help them

in their process of working out what they want to do for a career and how to get there. Another of Joshs favourite

sessions is the Mock Interviews which we recently conducted at Geraldton Senior College. This is an opportunity

Josh wishes he had when he was in school where we ask the students what job they would like to apply for and

then interview them for that position. The feedback from these sessions is always very positive.

    Excel

Progressive Training now offers an Intermediate course in Microsoft Excel. The course is based on the 2010

version of the software but the skills can easily be transferred to 2007 & 2013 editions. Some of the topics covered

in the 4 hour session include: Text-to-columns

    Formulas & Functions

    Absolute & 3D Referencing

    The IF Function

    Conditional Formatting

    Data Validation

    Sorting & Filtering

    Pivot Tables

Contact us for more information about the Microsoft

    courses that we offer.

    Ship into Port

As a benet of being a part of the team to develop

and deliver the general inductions for Geraldton Port

Authority, Bill Belson and Josh got the opportunity to

ride out on a pilot vessel, climb the side of a ship and

ride it back into port. It was an amazing experience and

you can see footage of it on Youtube by searching for

    Ship into Port Timelapse.

    Website

While not everyone may notice all the changes thathave recently gone into the Progressive Training

website, a lot of work has been going on behind the

scenes. Aside from general tidying up and re-organising

content, we have added a Partner Login portal where all

of our partners can download the assessment tools for

the courses they present. This was implemented as a

way to make sure only the most current documents are

being used and so that the trainers have access to them

from wherever they are, even on their mobile devices!

A change you may have noticed is the addition of

Consultancy to our menu. Pages have been added toprovide information on the consultancy services we offer

ncluding RTO Partnering, Resource Development and

Systems Auditing. Take a look at our website for all the

nformation, and as always, I welcome any feedback and/

Christmas Island is a natural wonder - a remote tropical island

famous for its unique red crabs, robber crabs and spectacular

bird life. It is an Australian Territory which lies way out in the

Indian Ocean 2,600 kilometers northwest of Perth and 500

kilometers south of Indonesia's capital Jakarta.

The Island is 135 square kilometers in area with 73 kilometers

of rugged limestone coastline fringed by a narrow coral reef that

drops away very steeply to the ocean depths. Two thirds of the

island is national park with majestic rain forests, bountiful marine

life and stunning land and seascapes.

Italo Amato from the Department willingly and very capably, showed off his tour guiding skills to Geoff, with trips around the

island and a running commentary of the history and special island

    wonders.

One of those wonders included an introduction to the

extraordinary robber crabs, the biggest land crustacean on

earth that live to be 50-70 years of age. Robber crabs have

exceptional climbing ability and will obsessively pick up and carryoff foreign items they may come across and are well known for

stealing shiny items such as pots and silver ware from camps and

    properties.

The eating, shopping and sunsets were some of the additional

highlights during this visit.....Oh!!!...did he mention

that he was there to work?

In August Geoff headed off to Christmas Island to conduct an audit for the Department of Training and Workforce

    Development.

Guess somebody has to do the tough jobs :-)

    October 2013 Volume 7 Number 3 t

    Italy for the third time.

Lyn and I have just returned from our third visit to Italy. There is something special about this country that we both

love. Maybe back in history a friendly Roman took a liking to a lovely welsh lass and that's where the love of Italy

started for the Davies, who knows.

Yet again Lyn turned her hand to travel consultancy and turned out a fantastic

    holiday for us both.

We began the Italian leg of the holiday in Turin. Arrived at around 11:00pm

then up and off at 7:00am the next morning (what jet lag?). Here we took

in a number of cathedrals, Egyptian museum (best outside of Cairo), Mole

Antonelliana and of course the Shroud of Turin (only the copy).

Accompanying photo is of some of the artefacts found in an Egyptian tomb.

    Yes it's a boomerang!

From Turin we travelled to Aosta and the start of our rst walk. This area of Italy

is next to the Swiss border. Food, language and buildings in this region are

different to the other areas where we have travelled in Italy such as Tuscany,

    Umbria and Amal.

We both found this walk challenging in that there were a number of steep

climbs and the travel notes left a bit to the imagination. All in all though we had

a great time and a number of stories that we love to tell others.

From Aosta we travelled by train to our next walk in Piemonte, known as little

Tuscany without the crowds. We began our adventure in Alba the Slow Food

Capital of Italy also where Ferrero Rocher and Nutella are made. The next

day we were driven to our start point for the walk. This was more like the

terrain we were both used to, walking through vineyards and hazelnut groves.

Food and wine in this region is second to none. Love to return there one day.

After our walks it was time to relax a bit so we left Piemonte and travelled

to Florence (one of my favourite cities). Yet again Lyn had excelled herself

in organising this section of the holiday. Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore

& Brunelleschi's Dome, trip on the Arno River at sunset, Tuscan meal in a

Florentine house, Ufzi Gallery & corridors and nally back to the Florence

Accademia to see Michelangelo's statue of David.

From Florence it was off to Rome for the nal leg of the journey. One thing

I have to say is that we could certainly learn a lot for the Italian Rail system.

Trains leave and arrive on time and the speed trains (300km/hr) that operate

between the cities take some beating.

One of the disappointments that we had on a previous tour was the number of

people within the Sistine Chapel when we visited. This time Lyn had booked

us on a small group tour (10 in all) that visited the Chapel after the crowds

had left. We had around 30 minutes where we could walk around the chapel

and take in the painting at our own pace. In addition to this we were taken into

areas of the Vatican that are closed off to the general public. Great experience.

Well that's a summary of the trip. Better start planning for the next one - back

    to Wales and Scotland.

    Cheers

    Paul and Lyn Davies
