Well ladies, we have
started off our new
year with a bang.! We
had a wonderful Wel-
come event with ap-
proximately 50 guests.
We gained 4 new mem-
bers and received 2
more applications that
need payment. I thank
all those who helped
put this together, those
providing food, set-up
and clean-up, and es-
pecially to Pat Webb
for the information and
set up of the event ta-
bles, Peggy Moulton
for organizing the folks
to be at the tables, and
Lindamarie Richard-
son for the lovely flow-
ers and all her help in
the set-up.
At our October meeting
you will have the op-
portunity to review the
budget presented by
our Budget Committee
which the Board ap-
proved. This is an ex-
cellent guideline of
how our income and
expense are expected
throughout the year
and gives us a good
idea of how much
money
we need
to raise
in order
to give
out dona-
tions to
various
groups. I
believe this budget will
also be in this newslet-
ter, so be prepared to
ask any questions you
may have at the Octo-
ber meeting.
In November, we have
scheduled our card
party, ―An Afternoon
Touring the USA.‖
There will be lots of
fun, food and prizes for
this event and hope-
fully you can bring your
family members and
friends to come and join
us. The date is Novem-
ber 6th and we look for-
ward to a large turnout.
The cost is $5.00 per
person which includes
lunch.
Our November meeting
is set for November 8th
and Joe Waters will be
our speaker. His topic
is ―The Blessed Virgin
Mary: Chosen Daugh-
ter of Israel.‖ This is
the title of one of the
Marian Masses desig-
nated for use during
the Advent season and
which will help us to
explore Mary’s obedi-
ence to the Law and the
will of God in expecta-
tion of the coming Mes-
siah. I am hopeful you
will enjoy his discus-
sion.
Don’t forget to go out to
the Abortion Clinic on
Grove Road and pray
for babies in the womb
and their mothers and
fathers. Our chosen
day of the week is
Tuesday from 10 AM-
11AM, but if you can’t
make it, then you can
sign up for any time. If
you can not get to the
clinic, say a special Ro-
sary for this purpose as
often as possible.
Thank you for all of
your support and hope-
fully this year will be
filled with good deeds,
fellowship and God’s
blessings.

Annual Welcome Event
Our Annual Welcome
Event/Membership Drive was
held on Sunday, 25 September,
in Gallivan Hall. Over 50 peo-
ple attended, 12 of which were
guests.
President
Susanne be-
gan the af-
ternoon’s
festivities
with a warm
welcome to
all. Pearlie
Harris led
us in the
Opening
Prayer. Af-
ter conducting some business,
a ―Get-to-Know-Our-Members‖
game sheet was distributed to
everyone. This required us to
ask questions of each other to
find the answers. We sure had
fun discovering more about one
another.
Volunteers supplied delicious
food for the luncheon, which we
all enjoyed!
Then it was time to visit the
Information Tables to learn
more about how we could help
in our church and community.
Experienced members were on
hand to answer questions and
provide information.
A board depicting photos of our
members in action was on dis-
play along with photos of recent
mem-
bers.
Member Sue Lathrop made and
donated a beautiful ―Madonna‖
quilt wall hanging to use for raf-
fle dona-
tions for a
Catholic
charity.
Door

Community Concerns News - Shelby Gaschler, Chair
RONALD MCDONALD
HOUSE CHARITIES OF
THE CAROLINAS
Please help support the Ronald
McDonald House Charities of
the Carolinas by collecting alu-
minum pull tabs. This is a pro-
ject we all can help with...just
collect those pull tabs!
Pop tabs? Yes, pop tabs. That
little insignificant tab you pull
to open your soft drink can
make a significant impact to
the Ronald McDonald House.
It is easily removed from the
can and takes up less space
before it is recycled. The
Ronald McDonald House of
Greenville, SC wants your pop
tabs!
JUST FOR FUN, HERE ARE
A FEW TAB-ULATIONS:
1 Tab = 1 Inch
36 Tabs = 1 Yard
63,360 Tabs = 1 Mile
1,000,000 Tabs = 16.7 Miles
1,267 Tabs = 1 Pound
2,534,000 Tabs = 1 Ton
The Ronald McDonald House
provides a ―home away from
home‖ for families of children
receiving treatment at the
Children’s Hospital and Shrin-
ers Hospital for Children as
well as various other hospitals
in the area. The money col-
lected from recycling helps
with the expenses of running
the Ronald McDonald House.
One hundred percent (100%) of
all money collected through this
project comes directly back to the
Greenville Ronald McDonald
House. The House saves the pop
tabs until they get a truckload,
then they are recycled. They are
not a United Way funded pro-
gram, so they depend upon the
community to donate money,
food and supplies to keep going.
People of all ages and walks of
life can feel that they have made
a significant contribution to help
families in need—and in an al-
most effortless way!
Look for the red
house at all of our
meetings!
Please support the
women of the Pied-
mont Deanery while they sup-
port the Ronald McDonald House
of the Carolinas!
PROJECT HOST
Every night hundreds, if not
thousands, of our neighbors go to
sleep hungry, with no idea where
their next meal is coming from, if
it’s coming at all.
Last year over 78,000 meals to
the needy were provided to many
who otherwise might be hungry
but aren’t thanks to Project
Host, a soup kitchen in down-
town Greenville.
Started in 1981 as an outreach
program of local churches, since
then, it has continued to grow to
accommodate the community’s
needs. It currently has a 185
seat dining hall and a fully
equipped commercial kitchen.
Every day of the year, from
11:00 am to noon, a home-
made soup, a sandwich, fruit,
and a beverage are offered to
those in our community who,
for one reason or another,
can’t quite make it on their
own right now. They don’t
ask why. And they do not
criticize, they simple feed peo-
ple.
There are a few ways we can
help.
1. Donate time at the soup
kitchen. There are dates
open for Tuesday, Wednes-
day and Fridays in No-
vember and December of
this year. Hours are from
9:00 am until 1:00 pm (but
usually finish by 12:30
pm). They need up to 5
persons each day. If we
want to do the Sunday hot
meal we would have to
wait until March or later
of 2012, as these dates are
already taken.
2. Donate can goods and
other items.
3. Donate money.

International News - Rita Brown, Chair
―Never doubt that
a small group of thoughtful,
committed citizens can
change the world; indeed, it's
the only thing that ever
does.‖
Last spring the South Carolina
Catholic Council of Catholic
Women donated $500 to the
Nazareth Children’s Home in
Nyendo, Uganda. I persuaded
my two daughters, who are on
the Student Council at Travelers
Rest High, to consider a cam-
paign for the orphanage as one
of their charities for Spirit
Week. The in-house student
fund raising totaled $10,800.
What a difference this has made
in the life at the orphanage!
My daughter, Kimberly, oversaw
the projects listed below when-
ever she visited this summer
while working at the Interna-
tional Law Institute – African
Centre of Legal Excellence, in
Kampala.
Boda Boda (small motor-
cycle) Business - The boda
business has been up and run-
ning all summer. This allows
transportation for the needs of
the home, which includes taking
the children to the hospital or
purchasing supplies for the
home.
Chicken Coop Project -
The most exciting project of all!
In July, 550 chicks were pur-
chased and are being raised for
economic purposes. Once the
chickens start producing eggs,
the eggs will be sold and will
generate a sizable and steady
income for the home.
Nazareth Craft Shop - The
craft shop is open for business!
All income generated will di-
rectly benefit the home.
New Stove - The new stove
has been completed and helps to
make life easier (and safer, as it
now expels smoke).
Revamped Nazareth Of-
fice – New cabinets were built
and now all children's files and
medicines are contained here.
New Signs for Main
Roads and Entrance - Con-
structed of metal to withstand
the weather in Uganda.
New Playground - It goes
without saying that this is a
HUGE hit with the kiddos!!
New Dining Table and
Study Desks - The kids can
now eat together at each meal.
New Clotheslines!
Pig Project - Repairs were
made to the pig pen and a few
new piglets were purchased.
This project will also help to gen-
erate income for the home.
New Water Tank and Wa-
ter Catchment Gutters - The
new tank will help to ensure wa-
ter supply at the home and for
the pig/chicken projects.
Garden Expansion - For
the reasons mentioned above,
until adequate fencing is
erected, the garden expansion
will remain a work in progress.
Solar Panels - Also this
summer, the Virginia Tech Engi-
neers Without Borders group, via
URF, completed the installation
of 7 solar panels and 8 batteries.
Skylight in the latrine
area - Was installed to provide
better lighting for the children.
Re-Stocking Supplies for
the Home - Recent funds helped
to buy a variety of food stock and
other supplies needed by the
home, including firewood.
Accounting System - Thor-
ough accounts of all projects
are now maintained.

God bless you all and thank you
for all you have helped with. I
truly believe we have made a sig-
nificant difference in these chil-
dren’s lives.

First Annual Retreat
SMWC presented their First
Annual Retreat on Saturday,
August 13, 2011 and it was
deemed to be a success. It was
held at the LaForesta Retreat
House at the Poor Clare Monas-
tery in Travelers Rest, SC.
This Retreat was open to all
women of St. Mary’s Parish and
we had 33 registered guests.
More than one half of these
guests were not members of
SMWC so we had an opportu-
nity to introduce our Club to
them as well.
The Retreat began at 10AM and
we were fortunate to have Dea-
con John Heuser present a
seminar titled ―Mary, Our Life,
Our Sweetness, and Our Hope‖.
Deacon John showed us how
important Mary is to all of us
and how she showed us how we
can live our lives for Jesus. She
is a wonderful example for all of
us. There was time for ques-
tions and additional discussion
after his presentation.
Lunch was catered by our own
Pearl Harris and she did an out-
standing job. The food was
plentiful and well appreciated.
Gelato was brought for all to
enjoy by Leslie Barhyte-
Moulton.
Our afternoon seminar was pre-
sented by Joe Waters, a member
of St. Mary’s, and his topic was
―The New Mass.‖ He gave us a
wealth of information about
why this change was needed
and how it all came about. This
―New Mass‖ is a revised transla-
tion into English from the or-
-iginal Latin and affects only
the English speaking parishes.
He then went over the changes
and gave us time to discuss
and ask questions. This was
very well received and most
informative.
Around 4 PM we all went over
to the Chapel at the Monastery
and Lindamarie Richardson,
Leslie Barhyte-Moulton, and
Pearlie Harris led us in
―Mary’s Rosary.‖ This was a
wonderful ending to a special
day.
I hope that at next year’s Re-
treat, we have many more par-
ticipants.
