Science andEngineering Challenge

Katherine High School had 20 students travel to Darwin this week to represent our school at The 2011 NT Schools Science and Engineering Challenge, held at Charles Darwin Univer-sity. The students competed in several activities and were well rewarded for their efforts. Kath-erine High School students won two individual firsts, seven sec-onds and we placed second overall. All students competed extremely well and represent-ed the school with pride, well done to the staff and students involved.

Outdoor Ed Update

Students in Outdoor Educa-tion have been participating in a number of team build-ing activities during the past few weeks. This has involved students working together to achieve a shared goal. Team-work is an important focus of the course and students are showing improvements in both teamwork and leadership. The group have constructed a pa-per bridge strong enough to hold a half-filled water bottle, students achieved some inter-esting results. We are looking forward to learning First Aid and other interesting topics in the coming weeks. Outdoor Education is being introduced back into the curriculum so the school can increasingly take advantage of the many won-derful bushwalks and camping opportunities around Kather-ine.

Arts ExtravaganzaArt is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colours flowers, so does art colour life.

An Arts Education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative op-portunities to reward the skills of children who learn different-ly. On Wednesday May 4 we celebrated the artistic skills of Katherine High School students, which was well attended by parents. The Art Exhibition was followed by a Performing Arts performance which gave stu-dents the opportunity to per-form and develop their confi-dence and skills to the delight of the crowd.

An Arts Education, be it in Visual Art, Music or Theatre, provides learners with new ways of think-ing, feeling and interacting. An Arts Education facilitates a passion for lifelong learning be-yond the classroom. For School Pride Week we cel-ebrated our school and the achievements of our students by presenting to the commu-nity the amazing Visual and Performing Art talents of our students and staff.

ANZAC DayA special Thankyou to our school capitans for represent-ing Katherine High School at this years ANZAC Day March. Special mention to Hollie and Helena Henderson for marching as well.

Keys To Drive. . . helping parents teach their Learner driver

As a parent you may be a good driver; but being able to teach your Learner is not an easy task.

A recent national survey of more than 1,250 parents of Learner drivers found that al-most half (45.5%) were nervous or apprehensive when they began teaching their teen how to drive.

keys2drive is a federally funded program that has been devel-oped by the Australian Auto-mobile Association which aims to take the drama out of learn-ing to drive. It helps parents to prepare for their role as a su-pervising driver and to ensure that any time spent in the car with their Learner is successful and effective.

keys2drive is a free lesson (in-volving theory and on-road) delivered by an accredited professional driving instructor to any Learner who is accom-panied by their supervising driver – most often a parent.

This program, the single largest Learner driver safety program undertaken in Australia, repre-sents a unique and valuable experience for parents and their Learner drivers.

Kormilda First VisitWords by Leith WaterburyPhotos by Ryan Woolfe

The newly formed Kormilda Academy made their fi rst trek south to visit the Katherine Academy in May. It started what we believe will be a great rivalry between the Academies due to its strong link between Academy and staff members who have represented both schools at different stages.

FOOTBALLKatherine Academy

Fri, May 5, 2011

The Kormilda boys headed by the former Katherine Academy Director Charlie Shannon rolled into town supported by Cam Illet and Brad Stephens.

The fi rst match against the visiting Kormilda side was eagerly anticipated by the Katherine Academy boys and the high energy match was played in good spirits.

It was a great game with both sides playing in the Clontarf spirit and enjoying the afternoon.

Best players for Kormilda were Dylan Cann and Dwayne Shadforth. For the Katherine team Loy Fordham and Lawrence Watego were the standouts.

We look forward to heading up the Highway and playing a return match in the future.

A game between the junior Karraks and Kormilda is already penciled in for later in the Term. I’m sure Charlie will be eager to get one on the board against his old side.
