ZOU ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: FORMER SECURITY GUARD NOW A TEACHER

Mr Palanjeta hopes his story will inspire others to thrive to live their dreams, knowing that someone like him was able to achieve something as wonderful as this.

Mr Joseph Palanjeta is a ZOU alumnus who graduated with a Diploma in Education in 2017. His educational story has been an inspiration to those who have met with him. The man has revealed the secret behind his success story. He attributes his success to the Zimbabwe Open University, empowerment through open and distance learning, that is “earning while you earn” thrust. He narrated how he faced many challenges along the way in fulfilling his dream. It was never easy especially that he couldn't get enough sleep as he juggled his work, his studies and family time, but he took everything one step at a time. “As a security guard I would take my module to my night shifts to study when there would be less traffic at work,” he narrates. “At one time as I was walking home I almost blacked out, for about five minutes I

couldn't see, so I had to sit beside the road for a while, afterwards I recovered and walked home.”

Mr Palanjeta said it has always been his dream to finish his studies and that he wanted to be a teacher because he has developed a special affection for children.

A man who started off as a security guard has turned his life around after taking a huge decision that saw him into a qualified teacher.

"Education is a good course to deal with students and you can really change their lives," he said.

“Age is not a hindrance, poverty is not a hindrance. Just pursue your dream with the formula: hard work plus determination plus prayer and you will reach your aspirations in life," Palanjeta said.

“Financial challenges were to take a toll later, especially having to make charts for teaching aids. I had to be innovative; I went to a local supermarket where I collected discarded boxes, mostly cerevita boxes, the staff there knew me because of my regular visits there to collect those boxes. They would even keep them for me and am grateful of that,” narrates Mr Palanjeta.

Well done Mr Joseph Palanjeta, NEZOU ZVINOITA!
